Dr. Charlene "Charlie" Stone, a local psychologist, begins her profiling career by assisting the Huntsville Police in the pursuit of a serial killer. Men are seduced in local night clubs and lured back to their homes, where they are beaten and mutilated. The gruesome murders haunt Charlie's dreams and trigger sleepwalking episodes. With three victims already brutally slaughtered, the killer is still on the prowl. Due to building circumstantial evidence, Charlie finds she is a suspect and banned from the case. She begins her unsanctioned search for the killer to clear her name and to stop the bloodshed.
This is a very well written, well-plotted book that is hard to put down. Charlie Stone is a psychologist who works with people with addiction. She also wants to become a profiler with the Huntsville, Alabama, Police Department. This is her first case. A man has been murdered, tortured, and sexually mutilated. Detective Ryan Roberts guides her through her first crime scene. Soon there is a second victim and a third. Charlie finds herself attracted to Ryan as they work together but is leary of getting involved with a co-worker. She is also recently divorced and still dealing with the trauma that entailed. Charlie has to deal with sexism and skepticism from the police department and increasing emotional demands on her from her patients and her new relationship with Ryan.
