How do you catch a killer who never leaves a clue?
Bridgette Casseldhorf is a rookie detective working her first murder case. The circumstances surrounding the murder of a young woman lead Bridgette to believe it’s the work of a serial killer, but nobody is listening. Convinced the killer will strike again shortly, can Bridgette find enough evidence to convince her team before another young woman is murdered?

Bridgette Cash is a rookie detective, being trained by Detective Lance Hoffman, who's set for retirement in 3 months. What Bridgette is finding out is that Hoffman doesn't particularly like women, he's rude and overbearing and opinionated.
The finding of a woman's body is Bridgette's first murder case. She believes this is the work of a serial killer. She only has to convince Hoffman and their supervisor. But no one seems to be listening. Feeling that this killer is not done, she's digging deep to find the evidence she needs to prevent another murder.
No one has ever run up against a killer like this one. He plans and plans and rehearses... he never leaves a clue ... and he never takes anything with him he won't use. It takes the rookie cop to put together a profile and find something that everyone else has missed.
It becomes very personal when the killer turns his attention to Bridgette....
Bridgette's father was a Homicide Detective. Twenty years ago, her father murdered her mother and then disappeared ... at least that is what is believed. Bridgette wants the truth about what happened .. only the police file is missing. Can Hoffman be trusted? He was friends with her father ... but does he know what really happened? and where her father went?
The two story lines blend well together, but be forewarned. One of them reaches a semi-conclusion and the other is a cliff hanger. Books 2 and 3 are available now with more to come to the series. I like knowing I can continue without waiting for the next book to be published.
This is action-packed with great characters. I like the interaction between Cash and Hoffman and how they slowly come together to work as a team.
Many thanks to the author / Booksirens for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I feel a series binge read coming on...I picked this little gem up as a freebie and didn't know what I was getting into - went in totally blind. Kicka$$ h with a traumatic past - orphaned at 7 when her cop dad was presumed to have murdered her mother, raised by a kind aunt, Mensa, college grad, honorable discharge (although I glad she kicked the COs a$$ - literally), becomes a rookie cop in her dad's old precinct (for a reason), crooked cops... Oh My! I couldn't put this down.
I liked Bridgette and how she dealt with things - a loner mostly because of her past, she doesn't trust easily. This one had some sad moments - to be expected - and some very intense suspense - now I want to read the next one immediately.
This book has actually three mysteries. The first involves a rookie detective's conviction a serial killer is at work. Paired with a gruff detective nearing retirement she struggles with credibility. The second involves her father, a former policeman who disappeared after being accused of murdering her mother and corruption. The third is why this mystery was placed in the US. Candidates for police officer generally must attend police academy. They don't start out in homicide as a detective no matter how brilliant they may be. They work their way up starting with patrol duties. Bridgette is not a lateral transfer from a police agency. Secondly, one of the victims is supposed eighteen and a law student. At eighteen she might be a college student, freshman year but certainly not a law student. Law school comes after four years of college so the victim is unlikely to be eighteen. small point but one that irks. The book is filled with non-American vernacular. for instance, the parking lot/garage is described as a "car park".
This is n't a bad book; the pace is good and the writing is decent. However, it is very unlikely that Brigette would receive the accolades she did and be appreciated as being just so brilliant. Frankly, her initial observations were things that should have been picked up by the experienced forensic team. All the storylines are not resolved although the major one is. It's okay but sloppy research is unacceptable.
This was an absolutely riveting book. Bridgette Cash is a young probationary Detective who is working on two crimes, the first, a woman who was found murdered in a shallow grave off a hiking trail and the second, her father’s alleged involvement in her mother’s murder twenty years earlier. It is basically a procedural up to and including unlikeable Assistant Commanders, gruff senior partners and a mentoring Chief of Detectives. This novel was written as the first of a series and does everything the reader would hope for in the characters and plot development, particularly Bridgette. Thanks to Book Sirens and the Author for an e-Galley for an honest review.
"She shared Hoffman's concern about catching the killer, but right now she was far more concerned about stopping the next killing. As the ambulance's engine started, she began to formulate a plan.".......
Detective Bridgette Casseldhorf is new to the force. Paired with a detective on the edge of retirement, Bridgette will have to stand her ground with him. Taking in clues at a murder scene, Bridgette thinks it may be the work of a serial killer. Her more experienced partner, Detective Lance Hoffman, is dismissive of her ideas. It might be a long 3 months until his retirement.
As the clues unfold will Hoffman realize Bridgette might actually have something to contribute to this case? Will there be more murders? Is there a serial killer on the loose in Hartbourne? Can these Hartbourne Metropolitan Police detectives find a way to work together peacefully, and solve a horrific crime?
Just a few chapters in, and I was hooked. There are a few surprises you won't expect that involve Bridgette. I liked getting to know her. The characters had layers added to them smoothly, as the story carried on. A possible serial killer won't be the only danger Bridgette faces, old family secrets will add to the story line. She also comes to the attention of a couple people she'd be better off not ever meeting.
What a enthralling crime story. I look forward to seeing Bridgette evolve as a detective, and if she will find her foothold among the men in the squad. I've been reading crime novels for at least 35 years. It's not often I can find a story that is unpredictable and captivating.
I am obviously in a different world than other readers who reviewed this book/series. The highly repetitive nature of the author (the heroine is brilliant, highly intelligent, exceedingly smart, could do anything, has done grand things, is amazingly capable, was tops at this, that, this and that, and did you catch that she is brilliant? Oh, and don’t forget her name... Bridgette...) was mind numbing. The book became a dragging Lifetime episode about her feelings -the name is Bridgette, don’t you forget it- her bosses feelings, her partners feelings, her bosses boss’ feelings... heck... let’s just make it a round table therapy session. Yes, there is a serial killer around, but they’ll get to that after all these feelings, and who is senior than who, and I-don’t-believe-you-because-you’re-young-smart-and-pretty nonsense gets sorted out first. Slow paced, unbelievably insecure and non-authentic characters, no actual mystery or thriller, no cat-and-mouse, a boring and anonymous villain who we’re introduced to briefly towards the end, which adds fuel to the anti climatic conclusion. Definitely not a worthwhile read for myself, and certainly not worth following the series.
This is my first book by Trevor Douglas, and free, which is why I thought I would give it a go. I am often wary of crime novels because all too often they are unnecessarily gruesome and although this does centre on the ever popular vivtimisation of women by misogynistic men, it focuses on the investigation rather than salacious details. The plot is decent, the characters developed and the pace appropriate. All in all a good read and I am sure this will not be my last by this author.
Exhilarating, titillating, gripping and riveting storyline!!! The characters are multifaceted with human emotions and flaws which are effectual plus forceful experiences. This has defined their perceptions and personalities for either being the good or sinister characters in the story. This is a stunning and emotional read that presents suspense, tension, drama with plenty of thrills, chills, twists and turns. Intrigue is heightened to mountainous proportions as the author puts the reader into the middle of the story with the detailed descriptions. Come along with a grumpy, seasoned detective, the new rookie, the chief who is getting ready to retire, the obnoxious Assistant Commissioner, the carefully, strategically serial killer plus an myriad of supporting characters. I volunteered to read Cold Comfort which is book # 1 in the Bridgette Cash Mystery Thriller series. Thanks to the author via Book Sirens for the opportunity. My opinion is my own. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received the ARC from the author through Booksirens and leaving this review freely. This book is part of Bridgette Cash Mystery series Bridgette a new detective on probation is paired with a crusty about to be retired detective to learn the ropes. Soon they find themselves in midst of a serial killer's search who has been killing for past 3 years. Soon Bridgette finds herself becoming the target of not only the killer but also of unknown assailants who want to prevent her from investigating her mother's murder as well as save herself from office politics. The characters are not superhuman but with flaws and past traumas and also very humane in emotions. All in all is a great detective story and looking forward to more in the series The only flaw is the side story is described in detail does not end in this book and requires to read the subsequent books
Superb thriller. Great characters, plenty of action & an electric ending. Easy to read. Easy to see why it's so highly rated. The sub-plot concerning Bridgette's mother's murder was the icing on the cake. You're duty bound to read the next book in the series now. If not sooner.
Newly minted detective, Bridgette Cash, thinks there’s a serial killer operating in Vancouver. With an intense investigation underway, more questions around her mother’s murder and father’s disappearance, come to the surface. Interesting start to a new series with lots going on. The plot lines crossover and interlock well with plenty of action. Hopefully, more to come in the series.
I rarely give four stars. If it’s good it gets three stars. If both the story and characters were great it gets four stars. This one certainly qualifies for the four stars. Loved it.
A great murder thriller. Loved the characters Bridgette, Delray and Hoffman and their interrelationships. Lots of tense action and a hopeful ending Will read more in this series in the future.
A murder mystery within another, the subsidiary one solved but the main one still waiting for more covert investigation. The tone of the story was good but I found myself anticipating the direction it would progress, although I could not have guessed the identity of the murderer as the clues on this got blurred within the other storyline. I liked Bridgette and those trustworthy colleagues she worked with; however I found the internal politics and the nastiness of senior members of the cop shop she was assigned to very irritating.
I guess I have my own ideas about who killed her mother so many years previously, and prompted her innocent father to go into hiding, and why they don't want Bridgette to work out their motives and expose them after so long. The series currently runs with another three books.
I may read the next book in the series at some point, but for now I'm satisfied with things as they stand.
Each main character offers different stages in their life and different ways of life. It makes story attractive and motivational. As other reviewers have pointed out, editors could do a better jobs, to many grammar and syntax errors. Besides, the author is better not to fall into the FBI bashing trap. The sign starts to show.
I couldn’t read this, the writing was fine but from the first few pages, once again the rookie on the job (3 weeks in) notices things the years in dectective doesn’t. This old detective has solved record murders but does not notice the basics. Disappointing.
Cold Comfort, the first book in the Bridgette Cash Mystery Series, features Bridgette Casseldhorf; she's a rookie detective on her first murder investigation. No one believes Bridgette when she is sure they have a serial killer at large; least of all her crusty opinionated partner. As a result, will she convince the powers in charge or will they ignore the rookie detective as a killer plies his trade? My book reviews follow.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
Cold Comfort is a fast-paced, nonstop thriller. The author grabbed me immediately and did not let go until the final page. He held me in the palm of his hand with descriptive writing, many twists and turns, multi-plotting, and the vividly choreographed scenes.
Each character is fully developed; from the self-serving Assistant Commissioner to the savvy, intelligent serial killer. Trevor Douglas' writing is fluid and flows smoothly. His portrayal of the crusty, socially clueless, seasoned detective, Lance Hoffman, is excellent. With retirement in less than three months, Hoffman has little time for social niceties. Watching Hoffman and Casseldhorf warm up to each other is a thing to behold. Including the compassionate, understanding, seasoned Chief Inspector, Felix Delray balanced the scales of tension between Hoffman and Casseldhorf. Then, the author added a self-serving obnoxious Assistant Commissioner of the Hartbourne Metropolitan Police, Leo Cunningham. What a stroke of genius; this added another layer of controversy and departmental jealousy to the storyline.
Trevor Douglas gave Bridgette a background of a family torn apart by murder and accusation. He then added in a police conspiracy, which ramped up the plot. As she slowly learns more and more including the involvement of the police force, she is also on the trail of an intelligent, savvy, and prolific serial killer. For good measure, he threw in a jurisdictional take over by the FBI. However, Bridgette and the team are one step ahead of the Feds. I had a good laugh when Chief Delray -------, no that would be a spoiler. You can only get the scoop by reading Cold Comfort.
MY OPINION:
A multi-plotted intense and spine-tingling police procedural raised the hairs on my arms and chills ran down my spine. I found myself on the edge of my seat many times. Cold Comfort is one of the best procedurals I have read in some time. With a rich storyline and a variety of well-developed characters, I became involved in the story. Author Trevor Douglas evolved his characters and storyline with skill and finesse. He included an action-packed, dramatic ending; which left me craving the next book in this series. This series is addictive, and like most addictive things you can't stop with one. Move over police procedural authors; there's a new sheriff in town.
The scenes are vivid and realistic; I could see each twist and turn, each character's conversation, and the working of Bridgette's genius, in my mind's eye. The scenes transition smoothly, and the writing is clear, easy to follow, and flows well. Exploring the mind and profiling a serial killer is fascinating, Trevor Douglas skillfully achieved both in this story. I found Bridgette's profiling of the motives and next move of the killer masterfully written. The intellect of the serial killer gave me chills.
Trevor Douglas held the suspense and mystery at high peak throughout the story. Including the conspiracy of her mother's murder, the ongoing cover-up, and her father's disappearance, added another layer to this twisting tale. What did he know that someone in the Police Department did not want to be told? Douglas held and continued to hold this mystery close to his chest. I am incredibly impatient for the unraveling of this conspiracy.
COLD COMFORT RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4
You will not be disappointed in Cold Comfort. It will grab you from the first pages with action, suspense, mystery, and finely tuned plotting. You will find it hard to put this novel down. I would not hesitate to buy this novel for myself or friend; it is suitable anyone who likes a story with twists and turns, action, and believable characters.
ALSO PLEASE NOTE:
I purchased this novel when it was free on Amazon and chose to review the novel with honest police procedural book reviews voluntarily. Reviews of any novel are dependent on the review author’s opinion. Consequently, all book reviews online and on my blog, are my opinions.
This book grabbed my attention from the first sentence as rookie Detective Bridgette Casseldhorf and her seasoned partner, Detective Lance Hoffman are at a crime scene where the medical examiner is exhuming a rancid, decaying corpse of a young woman from a shallow grave. Detective Hoffman is a crusty “old-school” cop who is three months from retirement.
Several observations by Bridgette lead her to suggest that this killing may be the work of a serial killer. Hoffman immediately dismisses this notion as the fantasies of a young and naïve rookie. But, as Bridgette investigates several similar unsolved cases, she uncovers several links that were common to these unsolved cases. Hoffman and their boss, Chief Inspector Felix Delaney, come around to her way of thinking.
As this plot unfolds, another piece of tragic history is revealed and soon tied to the current investigations. Bridgette’s father was a homicide detective in the same police station 20+ years ago. When Bridgette was 4-years old, her mother was murdered as Bridgette was secluded in a closet in their home. Her father was the prime suspect and, since he fled, assumed to be guilty. As the plot unfolds, it is revealed that Hoffman and Bridgette’s father were close friends, as was Inspector Delaney who was also a detective at the time. Additional links are revealed that I won’t address so as to not provide any spoilers.
As they investigate the serial killings, Bridgette and Hoffman come to realize that they have never seen such a careful killer who is highly skilled at planning and rehearsal of his kidnappings and murders. He has a long string of successful killings and has evaded detection and identification because of the planning, rehearsal and careful execution of his plans. The killer has actually been looking forward to the mental challenge of a highly skilled victim who doesn’t just submit to him without a serious challenge. So, while Bridgette and other policemen lure him into a position to capture him, he likewise lures Bridgette into a trap that threatens to be terminal for her as a victim. There are a lot of emotional roller-coaster rides in this book. There are unexpected twists and turns, some enjoyable and some not. This is true both in regard to the serial killer and the case of her Bridgette’s murdered mother and missing father. Some aspects of these mysteries are resolved. Other await resolution in the second and/or third books in this new Bridgette Cash Series of which this was book 1. (Bridgette found out that her dad had been using the surname Cash and she decided to change hers.)
The plot is complex and multi-faceted and there is a fairly large cast of characters. Some plot twists were predictable, others not so much. I thought that there were a few things that were not logical but consider them to be fairly minor flaws for a work of fiction. It certainly held my attention from the first page to the last. I highly recommend it and look forward to continuing with the series.
I received an ARC through Book Sirens. My review is provided voluntarily.
There were 8 police officials at the crime scene 2 tech, a photographer, & Dr. Ray Warner (55+, ME). Seymour (Vietnam vet) & his dog had come across the decomposed corpse of Monica Travers (19) who had disappeared. South-Central Precinct building. Chief Inspector Felix Delray (55+, boss) wanted to hear what Detective Hoffman & Detective Casseldhorf found at the crime scene. Asst. Commissioner Leo Cunningham wants briefed & then plans on holding a press conference. Charlie Bates (25+) was assigned to help unravel the murder case. Don Raisin (archives # B2) was helping also.
Will the murder case be resolved & someone brought to justice?
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.
A very awesome book cover, & proper great font & writing style. A very well written whodunnit murder mystery book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a large set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great murder mystery movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Rookie Bridgette explodes into her role as a detective by uncovering a serial killer who has been killing for the last 5 years. She is strong, driven and very smart much to the disgust of her new partner, veteran detective Hoffman, who is very abrupt, crusty and dislikes women on the force which causes disagreements, frustration and butting of heads. After a few tension heavy days they come to a wary understanding and begin to work together more effectively but even with the support of Chief Delray this may not be enough. Can they collect enough pieces to put the puzzle together before another woman is abducted and murdered? As the pressure increases, so does the danger and it appears Cash has a target on her back, in a race against time who will claim the victory? I really enjoyed this book and will be downloading the second in the series, I have given it four stars rather then five because whilst the main plot with the serial killer was brought to a close, the secondary plot (I don't want to give any spoilers) was not, we are left with a cliff hanger which is a little frustrating. I would have bought the second book anyway because I enjoyed the first but I don't like having to buy the second book to get closure on part of the plot from the first, call me stubborn but it tends to have the opposite effect. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is my first book by Trevor Douglas and it was a freebee. It won't be the last! Bridgette Cash is a young Detective on probation who has been assigned to be the partner of Lance Hoffman, a man who is not particularly fond of women. Lance will be retiring in three months but the Chief believes he can teach Bridgette much about police work, if she can stand to work with him.
Her first case is the murder of a young woman buried in a shallow grave. Bridgette thinks the murder is the work of a serial killer but has trouble getting Lance nor the Chief to listen to her. She is stubborn and refuses to stop digging for answers. Eventually Bridgette finds clues that change their opinion of her.
There is another murder that Bridgette is interested in learning more about; the murder of her mother by her father when she was a small child - twenty years ago. She tries to get the records of the murder only to learn that all the records have disappeared. Someone does not want her to know what really happened. But who? And who can she trust?
This book has several great characters and constant movement. I loved it and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Cold Comfort holds all the qualities of a hard-hitting, mysterious police thriller. Extraordinarily intellectual and instinctive rookie homicide detective, a past shrouded in moral uncertainty, and a perplexing incognito antagonist. Bridgette Casseldhorf is an endearing relatable heroine with a healthy conscience and inspiring initiative. She is on a personal journey of self-reflection as well as a professional trek towards becoming a respected woman in a male-dominated field.
The book has enough action to keep the reader engaged while also catering to a mysterious side-story that fails to gain much traction or establish a resolution just yet. The characters are well fleshed-out and each have their idiosyncrasies that make them unique and multi-dimensional. There is a bit of cliché politicking throughout the story but it’s to be expected with a police tale.
All in all this was a satisfying read with a thrilling final act. It wasn’t as predictable as some of the genre’s offerings which was quite refreshing. I can see myself reading more of this series as time goes on but there’s a glaring lack of dynamic prose that may leave me likely to take a break first before continuing to follow Bridgette in her future endeavors.
Cold Comfort is Book one in the Bridgette Cash mystery thriller series. It really lives up to its thriller classification. Bridgette is a great character. I loved her story arc and the backstory and mystery about her father. This ends up being the sideline story alongside the actual murders of present day.
Bridgette's partner Detective Hoffman knew her father, does her know more than he lets on? Also how can she convince him she's right and there really is a serial killer on the loose? Hoffman and Cash have an interesting relationship, he's so close to retirement and she questions his motives.
Being the first in the series you get left without everything being solved. To find the answers you'll just have to read the next book. It's a good thing that it is already published, I don't like waiting. ;-)
Cold Comfort has everything you're looking for, compelling story line, captivating characters and the edge of your set, can't put it down, action you crave.
I received a free copy of this story through BookSirens and am leaving a voluntary honest review.
It started with finding the body of a young woman who went missing 2 weeks ago. Bridgette is working her first case with seasoned, gruff, soon to be retiring Detective Hoffman. He doesn't like college educated detectives, and he's not going to make it easy for Bridgette. Given enough time, he comes to see her as more than a pain in his side. He finds that she's intelligent, intuitive, capable, and she understands what motivates this killer. He also knows that she has some baggage that is in no way her fault. Her father, who was also a detective, was accused of murder and there are people in her department who would like to get rid of her because of that. She doesn't know if it's because of her father's guilt or if they are trying to keep her from finding out that he was innocent. This was an interesting book. No big romances (very happy about that), never a dull moment, kept me interested all the way through. A real page turner. I will read the next book.
I loved this book. It never stopped in the action.
Bridgette Casseldhorf, is a new police officer..She know karate, has a high IQ and always wanted to be in police work. She is a rookie and her partner is ready to retire, Detective Lance Hoffman. She is sent with him on a murder investigation of a young girl. Bridgette thinks it might be a serial killer that is doing this, but she has to prove herself.
All the time, Bridgette has also fought a lot of demons in her life, when at age 7, her Mother was murdered and they blame her father. He did escape and Bridgette hasn't seen him in over 20 years. She wants to find out if her father really did kill her mother and could her father still be alive. He was a police officer and knowing this, some of the higher level police want her gone from the force. But, Bridgette just keeps proving to them how valuable she really is.
I can't wait to read the 2nd in this series! Just a non-stop read!
Overall, I enjoyed this new mystery detective series starter. The main character is smart and a quick learner, and her retiring partner provides insight into more than one case. The relationship between Detective Bridgette and her boss, Chief Inspector Delray, is immediately close, which is a little odd. They don’t seem to have a whole lot in common, but then again we don’t get much backstory about Delray apart from his history with Assistant Commissioner Cunningham, who is clearly being set up as an evil social climber and a tumor on the police department. The series as a whole will likely be focused not only on solving the cases of the detective’s parents’ murders, but also on getting rid of the AC. A few word choices struck me as odd, but otherwise I enjoyed the writing style and will keep an eye out for more installments in the series.
