"The Helicopter Heist" is billed as a fast paced, race against time thriller and it was definitely that! The amount of tension building up to the heist and then the actually robbery itself was so suspenseful I couldn't put the book down until I knew whether or not it was executed successfully and whether the robbers got away or were caught. I wasn't aware myself of this crime in real life but I was intrigued enough to research it and was stunned by just how cunning and well planned this heist actually was. Knowing then that this story was based on incredible true events and created into a fabulous thriller made it all the more entertaining and in my opinion the author has done an excellent job in doing so, to a point the reader doesn't know what parts are fact and which are fiction. It's obvious a huge amount of research has been carried out to write this book and I can see it's a crime that the author has really taken a huge personal interest in.
Set in Vastberga, Sweden in 2009, I did struggle a little with place names and locations but it didn't detract from the enjoyment of the story and was an interesting setting for an extraordinary crime.
What I particularly liked about how the author wrote this book is how we were introduced to each character in the book no matter how small their part was, giving us their background, current situations and ambitions to a point you really did get a clear picture of each person and their role in the story. I liked all of the four main characters especially Sami and although they were planning an unbelievable helicopter heist that could result in the theft of millions of kroner you couldn't help but root for the plan to succeed. The fabulous twist at the end was very unsuspecting and I loved how it fit in so well with the plot.
The author Jonas Bonnier was once the CEO and president of the publishing company Bonnier Group and to have a book published by the company must be both very exciting and fulfilling for him. Full of drama, tension and a really compelling plot this is a truly riveting read that will go down well with non fiction and fiction readers alike. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book over a weekend and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

Have I got a summer read for you! This fictional Scandinavian thriller is based on true events, which makes it even more ravishing. I can’t wait for you to read it.

All you who love the TV series, movies, mysteries and thrillers to come out of Scandinavia, to say nothing of Karl Ove Knausgård’s bestselling fictional autobiography, are going to be reminded why you love those stories so much. This book has the daily life detail of Sweden that makes the journey so different from ordinary American novels.

To make it even more interesting, we are privy to the intimate thoughts and intentions of recent and not-so-recent migrants to Sweden, two of the main characters hail from Lebanon and Iran, respectively. Already we are interested. Add to that these folks struggled in their first years and turned to what appeared to be easier: theft and sometimes intricately designed robberies. Several of the characters met in jail.

Throw in some gorgeous Swedish blondes, female, at least one on the side of the law, the other working for the largest cash depot in Västberga, not too far from Stockholm, except there is water in between.

The beautiful blonde probably should have been harder to get, but one of the unattached, recently released, always-looking-for-an-angle young men is pointed towards her by a legendary thief, a thief whose ‘retirement’ in a remote cottage filled with eight big labradors, and a stash of cash moldering in a root cellar.

The young man discovers the blonde is a talker, and she likes to talk about work, and that is the cash depot.

The absurdity of the plan to rob the depot is so far out that we can’t imagine these guys, who have already been to jail once and are so obviously outsiders in every way, can manage to pull it off without serious damage to their lives, if not their reputations. But still they persist. So many things go wrong: they lose key personnel regularly and must replace them with someone less knowledgeable or less skilled. The plan is wildly oversized in every way.

Then the police find out. They know what will happen, where and when. They prepare for weeks in advance. They contact the National Guard and SWAT. They have the judiciary involved and have bugged a key member of the team ten different ways.

The robbers are screwed.

That’s all I’m telling you, but believe me, this is about as stressful a situation as I can imagine. Each member of the team doesn’t know the other members well. It’s a total crapshoot. Wait until you see what happens. What struck me as most bizarre and yet so ridiculously true, is the media reaction. When the absurd robbery was underway, the entire world became riveted at this audacious plan.

This is a translated novel. There are some moments when one is completely aware one is not reading an ordinary American thriller of the more usual kind. This, my friends, is something completely different. If you did not get that Scandinavian vacation this year, never fear. You will be in Sweden for the two or three days it takes you to read this one.

And you will spend a lot less money.

This terrific novel has been optioned to be made into a Netflix film original starring and produced by Jake Gyllenhaal. Do not wait! Read the book first, if you have time in your book-reading schedule. I will make an admission: for almost a year now it has been very difficult for me to read fiction when our daily nonfictional lives are so eventful. Somehow this fiction of nonfiction is the perfect fit.

Enjoy!

I have to admit, my first thought when I saw the author's name was whether Jonas Bonnier was in some way related to the company who have published his book. Being me, I decided to look it up and I was correct in my assertion, Jonas Bonnier is the former CEO and president of the Bonnier Group. It makes sense for his book to be published under their guidance.

"The Helicopter Heist" is what I would call a non-fiction thriller. based on a true story it lacks none of the drama present in a fiction thriller. After all, the truth is stranger than fiction! The rights to it have already been purchased in 18 territories. The heist is not something I had any previous knowledge of, probably as it happened in Sweden.

At the beginning, the pace is pretty slow, it does soon pick up to a much quicker pace and becomes more enjoyable, as a result. What is unusual about this book is that it is based around the four Swedish men who masterminded the crime, rather than from the perspectives of the investigating detectives. I imagine this took a great deal of detailed research, moreso than may have been required had it been told from the opposite angle.

The theft takes place at the most secure cash depot in Stockholm on 23rd September 2009 and is known as the Västberga helicopter robbery. The four men involved each have a different motive for taking part - Sami, after a business deal goes sideways wonders how he is going to provide for his newborn daughter, Michel, who grew up surrounded by criminals and poverty can't seem to escape his past, Niklas, who craves excitement and the rush of adrenaline, and Zoran, wants to get rich by any means necessary. The men behind the daring robbery are now behind bars, but the $6.5 million they stole has never been recovered.

Genuinely, one of the most engaging non-fiction outing i've experienced in recent times. Highly recommended to crime fiction/thriller fans and true crime fans alike. A riveting read!

Many thanks to Bonnier Zaffre for an ARC. I was not required to post a review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Jau kurį laiką ši knyga užsigulėjo mano namų lentynoje. Nusprendžiau, jog dabar metas jai. Tikrai nei kiek nenusivyliau,o ir susimąsčiau kodėl gi anksčiau jos neperskaičiau..?

Keturi vyrai nusprendžia imtis įspūdingo plano.. Jie ketina apiplėšti Vestbergoje (Švedijoje) esančią grynųjų pinigų saugyklą. Planas atrodo tobulas, viskas yra apgalvota iki menkiausių smulkmenų. Viso to kaina yra tiesiog įspūdinga..

Knygoje visko labai daug. Tačiau pradėsiu nuo to, jog autorius šį trilerį rašė remdamasis tikru nusikaltimu, įvykdytu Švedijoje. Man labai patiko. Kieta knyga.

Interesting to learn a bit more of what 'actually' happened (or not), but... this was also a liiittle bit boring. And that is a feat, since it's about one of the most movie-esque crimes in Swedish history.

You can tell that the author was slightly impressed by these guys while writing this, and that he let it color the story, since the majority of the book is painting portraits of the men behind the crime rather than talking about the crime itself.

While most of it, in the author's own words, is a mix of truth and fiction, let me hazard a wild guess that the ending is pure fiction. Because, come on.

I did find it fascinating, but in a way this book also contains so much wasted potential. Let's hope Netflix works some magic with the script.

I had a really hard time getting into this one, which surprised me a bit since I generally enjoy fictionalized history and semi-factual historical fiction. However, it was just slow. I had to drag myself through the first two thirds of the book before I felt like I had some momentum, then it was good for a bit before, all of a sudden, rushing to finish.

Without the otherworldly, stranger than fiction, story, I would have tanked the rating on this book. BUT, the story is so cool in and of itself that it carries the sub-par packaging into an ok read that I'm still happy I finished.

Well, as a true story about a heist to rob a cash counting house in Sweden, what an interesting plot involving some very ambitious thieves. The book leaves you guessing to the end if they make it out with the money. A great story, 4/5 stars.

This is definitively one of the best books I have ever read. It’s based on the true helicopter robbery that happened in Västberga, Sweden in 2009. I researched more about the real robbery and it is fascinating! The people behind the planning are real-life evil geniuses and reading about them and their strategy is just amazing. The book is impossible to be put down for the latter half as you get completely engrossed in the story.

Sami and Michel are ex-criminals and the story starts when they meet up with an informer. He tells them about a huge amount of money that is kept on the top floor of a company called G4S. He found out one of the women that works at the cash deposit is on a dating app and it would be the perfect opportunity to get information.

Sami is now a family man and is trying to leave his criminal days behind. But it seems that having a regular low-paying job is not for him.

Michel is single and attractive so he contacts the employee at G4s, Alexandra, and starts dating her. She’s very talkative and likes attention so it isn’t hard for Michel to get the information they need.

Zoran Petrovic is a very wealthy man who is “financing” the robbery. Together, they start planning and building their team. One early obstacle is the fact that there is a police station just a block away from the building. There’s no way they can just break into the building, go upstairs, and come back downstairs before the police arrive. They decide the best course of action is to get a helicopter and go through the roof.

Now all they need is a helicopter and a reliable pilot to complete their mission; but another problem arises. One of them is a fraud and gave information about the robbery to the Swedish police. The police now know exactly when and how they’re planning to pull it off.

They still manage to complete their plan and when the author describes the night of the robbery – minute by minute – your heart starts pounding and it’s impossible to stop reading! Only a few books have made me feel this way and the final plot twist is just unbelievable.

The whole robbery was so spectacular it's hard to imagine a bad book written about it. This is fiction, and I don't know how much of it is made up, but I think the ending was definitely made up and also probably the weakest part of the book. The characters are very well thought-out and sort of carricatures, but helps the reader land their sympathy with the criminals. Maloofs "Absolut, absolut... Nej" is a fun quirk for example, and the police who doesn't even have a bed in her apartment because she doesn't sleep? Comedic gold.

All in all, a quite fun action comedy.

Tip: anyone that says this is fast-paced is lying, they haven't read it.

The dialogue was shit. The moron saying 'Right, right' to just about everything was tedious.

The predictable twist at the end was a fizzle.

Awfully boring. Skip this. Hopefully the author doesn't get another book deal.

Men men.

They say never judge a book by the cover. However, this is called 'The Helicopter Heist' for a reason and is all about a real life robbery that occurred in Sweden back in 2009.

The start of the book is sedate and at times left me wondering when we would be getting to the heist action. It is like the start of a river that slowly meanders towards the final destination. There is enough here to keep the reader interested, setting the scene, and the first 100 pages or so can be summed up by one of the characters explaining

"What your saying is....that we need to find a helicopter. And a pilot. Then we're going to blow our way in through the roof and climb down a ladder to grab the money....."

The second part of the book moves onto the planning stage and there is a lightness of touch by the author that gives the characters depth and some funny moments ensue. There is also attention to detail and a pleasant non-sensationalist tone that gives the story a realistic feel. At this stage the river is moving faster and the end destination is over the top of a large waterfall.

The last part of the book deals with the heist itself and moves along at a cracking pace like the river cascading down the waterfall. This part is superb.

There is a surprise at the end that I did not see coming.

A book that is worth persevering with at the start that rewards the reader with a great story and a sense of satisfaction.

I found this a particularly intriguing story with a plot containing more threads than a sewing box. The characters and plot are well laid out and the story evolves at an ever increasing pace. The culmination is one that I am sure many readers will think as did I "Damn, I should have seen that" but it is well hidden within the pages. Entertaining and eminently readable it is a book everyone should read.

I just found out that the original book was written in Swedish and that explains a lot about the parts I didn't like. For starters, the tons of Swedish places & names that were hard to keep track of and kept tripping me up.
There were so many characters, some that you weren't sure how they fit into the story, until it got to the actual heist. Which was actually fast-paced and interesting, with a great plot twist at the end which I liked. 3 stars
