Through the Rivers

Rate this book
1963, Katherine “Kate” Tate is known for many things: her stunning singing voice, her exquisite taste in fashion, and her striking personality. But when God tells her to pack her bags and go back home, she wants to be only known for her faith in God.

The last thing Kate expects to do upon her return home is to solve a decades old mystery with the help of friends old-enter Reverend Jesse Waters- and new alike. The mystery isn’t supposed to have anything to do with Kate, so then why does every clue seem to lead right back to the doorsteps of the Tate family?

Can Kate do it all? Represent her new faith? Right the wrongs of her past? Fix her family’s problems? And figure out the curse?

I still remember the exact day I fell in love with reading. It was nighttime and raining. Mom and Dad had already sent me and my sister to bed. But I couldn't sleep. We didn't have cable (and I'm pretty sure the parents wouldn't allow it) and cartoons were over for the day. I remember turning on the light, looking across the room at my snoring sister and then at my bookcase filled with books. I wasn't a reader at the time, but my mother was. She was constantly buying me something. I walked over to the bookshelf and pulled my newest book off the shelf and just began to read. For the first time, I learned what it was to leave my room and go someplace else; to care about imaginary people so much, I had to turn the next page; to get so caught up in a story, hours flew by. And it is that exact feeling that I want so much to create in my readers. Enjoyment, entertainment, and feeling blessed.

Book two of the four-part ‘Tate Family’ series, Through the Rivers by Embassie Susberry is a marvelous story that emphasizes the significance of family, faith, and forgiveness. Written with superb character development as well as an engaging plot, Through the Rivers is an awesome story in a marvelous series.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV): Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Katherine ‘Kate’ Tate, the vivacious and witty protagonist of the story, is at a transitional point in her life. Set in the early 1960’s, the novel opens with Kate leaving the bustling city of Chicago, where she is departing a life as a successful sultry nightclub singer and returning to her small and drab hometown in Texas, as a saved Christian. When she arrives, she quickly discovers that not much has changed. Her family is still in shambles, and the town continues to operate with underhanded racism. However, Kate is on a mission. She believes that she was sent by God back to her hometown to restore peace and encourage emotional healing within her family. She hopes that her love and dedication to the Lord will inspire change within her family. Upon her return, she becomes involved in the local church she grew up in and is met with criticism and contempt from a few church members. Yet, she receives a warm welcome back from a few members, including her childhood friend, Jesse Waters, whom she is surprised to find is the incoming pastor of the church. Their reunion will forge an amicable reconciliation between them and uncover a newfound sense of love. When she is asked to assist in solving a decades-long mystery, it will expose hidden secrets and unleash a series of thrilling events.

"Things were not perfect in any way, but I knew that what God’s Word promised was true: when I went through the rivers, they would not overflow me (Kate, Through the Rivers).

Enthralling and inspiring, Through the Rivers, is an exceptional tale that engrosses the reader throughout the entire story. The novel is well written and magnificently paced, with an amusing plot. The story has an impactful message of faith, that emphasizes the redemptive love of Christ and the power of forgiveness. If you enjoy family sagas rooted in the Christian faith, with memorable characters, I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series.

Ms. Katie.

When I say her personality made me laugh out loud, I mean it. Sweet, bold, sassy and good hearted, that's what kept Jesse fascinated with her for all those years. Add her new love for God and a maturity that comes with life lessons, and he was as good as gone from the moment she came home. This was funny, and sweet with some sad, but unfortunately realistic drama. But, as usual, the suspense and clean love story makes it more than worth any moments of unease. Kitty Kat helped solve a mystery, started some family healing and got her man!

Embassie you are a great storyteller. This book was intriguing and emotional. I love the spiritual aspect of it. We don't have enough stories like these.. And I love the fact that it had a lot of debth. Please keep using this platform to get out some of the stories revealing the past journeys that people of color had to navigate. I
really got to be involved with the characters. Thank you so much please continue writing.

Very good read for mystery lovers.

This was a good book. I know it was more of a mystery than a romance, but it was sweet nonetheless. I only wish it were written to include Jesse's point of view as well. Katie was a great heroine.

This is the second book in this series and continues to show how the lives of blacks in the deep South hasn't changed much.

I had a hard time liking Kate but isn't THAT WHAT MAKES FICTION SO.GOOD? THE.CHARACTERS WERE VERY REAL AND RARE. FAMILY DYSFUNCTION IS ALSO A COMMON THEME.
