Fleeing from the witch trials in Salem, Terra Rowan finds herself in modern day Asheville, North Carolina. A dark spirit from the past hunts the last witch of Salem. With the help of the ladies of the Biltmore Society, Asheville aristocrats with untapped powers and a crooked-legged fat orange cat named Pixel, Terra must discover the secret within the forest to preserve the bloodline. Terra Rowan is a witch trapped between worlds and lost in time. "Best Cozy Mystery I have read this year". Karen Owen Mystery BloggerAuthor "Vicki Vass takes me back to the first mysteries I ever read…Nancy Drew." By Lisa Ks Book Reviews "There were so many twists and turns that I was not able to figure out who did it until the end of the book. I like that because it makes me want to read faster to see what happens next" Griperang's Bookmarks A cross genre mix of historical fiction and paranormal mystery, Bloodline by Vicki Vass is the first book in her A Witch Cat Mystery series. Set in two different locations; Salem, Massachusetts during the witch trials of the early 1690; s and contemporary Ashville, North Carolina, Ms. Vass uses the local folklore of both locations to build her story. Well-developed characters, two interesting mysteries and a solid pace kept me turning the pages from start to finish. While there are two separate mysteries, only one will be resolved by the end of the story. The secondary mystery will undoubtedly be something that is carried as an ongoing thread throughout the series. Ms. Vass does a good job dropping clues for the reader to gather and the story takes plenty of twists and turns. The story’s pace is fairly quick and Ms. Vass’s voice as an author is well established and easy to read. Queen of All She Reads
With a passion for shopping and antiques, Vicki Vass turned in her reporter's notebook to chronicle the adventures of Anne and CC, two antique hunters who use their skills to solve a murder case.
Vicki has written more than 1,400 stories for the Chicago Tribune as well as other commercial publications including Home & Away, the Lutheran and Woman's World. Her science fiction novel, The Lexicon, draws on her experience in Sudan while writing about the ongoing civil war for World Relief.
She lives in the Chicago area with her husband, writer and musician Brian Tedeschi, son Tony, Australian shepherd Bandit, kittens Terra and Pixel, seven koi and Gary the turtle.
What if there really were witches in Salem? And what if witches were something far different from the creatures of traditional legend? Vicki Vass’s Bloodline combines elements from different faiths and cultures to create a new witchly mythology, where good powers protect and evil resurges into the modern day, and where a sweet group of tea-drinking old ladies might be so much more than they seem. Also, there’s a cat.
Identities are slowly revealed throughout this tale, and the balance of power between witches, familiars and guardians is delightfully portrayed. Point of view is convincing and intriguing, leaving readers to ponder the different wonders of feline, human, mystical, and canine life. The magic, from Appalachian herbs and crystals to spell books, sacred trees and wands, leads to scary revelations and a powerfully haunting conclusion. Neat lessons weave depth of character and plot, and the book is a fast, un-put-downable read with lots of excitement and intrigue. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Disclosure: I won a copy and I offer my honest review.
BLOODLINE is one of the most fanciful, delightful tales I have read for some time.
Anyone who reads my reviews know I 99.9% only read and review cozy mysteries. But every once in a while, a book will find me (They seem to have a way of doing that) and plead with me to read it. BLOODLINE is such a book.
Falling into many different genres . . . mystery, cozy mystery/para-cozy, paranormal, fantasy . . . This story has something for just about everyone. Not only that, this book will appeal to a wide range of ages. Any reader from teens through triple digits will truly be swept away in the magic that takes place between its covers.
Having read almost every book written by author Vicki Vass, I know what an amazing writer she is. But nothing prepared me for how captivated I would become with this book. Told from the point of view of a most unusual, yet captivating protagonist, BLOODLINE was fascinating from the first page to the last. Fast paced and spellbinding, with enchantment in every sentence, I read this story in record time. Really. I couldn’t put it down for a second!
Once in a while I read a book and think how I’d love to see it as a movie. I can totally see BLOODLINE being made into a feature film.
I really enjoyed this book! I haven't read any of the author's books. I am curious about them now. I definitely want to read more Witch Cat Mysteries so I hope this series continues. The narrator is a cat. That was something unexpected but thoroughly enjoyable. I am looking forward to more adventures with Terra, the witch cat narrator. I absolutely adore her. I love the way the author mixed in bits of historical elements with spells and lore to create a genuinely fun fantasy tale. I loved reading about the Vanderbilts ties to Asheville. I really enjoy reading about people in history, events that happened and the history of buildings and towns. This book contains all of that in an interesting mystery. For those who read cozy mysteries and prefer them to be about Christianity, you may want to select a different book. However if you don't mind reading about witches and spells this is definitely a book you don't want to miss. Time flew by every time I picked it up to read. I had a most enjoyable time with this book and intend to read it again, most likely in the fall.
Bloodline by Vicki Vass is the newest paranormal cozy series and is one that gets my vote for best new paranormal cozy mystery of the year. I read this book with wide excited eyes and wonderment. This book felt so real to me. Saying "I loved it" is an understatement. This book is written in a very unique way, offers the reader the chance to escape, it has the magic to transport the reader and not make you want to find your way back to reality. I could not put it down and I read it all in one night. This is a book I want everyone I know to read. As a lifelong lover of stories of Witches, Witchcraft and Magic, this story was so different and it transported me to a place I could never have imagined and yet felt completely at home in. With the "wide-eyed" excitement, heart quickening action and all the feels a cozy can have, this book has so much to offer. If I could buy the cozy world a book this would be the book I buy them!
Chased through the woods outside Salem by angry witch hunters with hounds, Terra Rowan follows the river to the ocean. Hiding in a cave fingering the potion in her pocket, she decides she has no choice…she drinks it. Darkness! Terra has morphed into a cat, and for the next 325 years she lives as a cat unable to find the potion or spell that would return her to her human form. Presently, Terra becomes friends with 'Abigail girl,' who has been struggling with hearing voices…including Terra the cat. Complicating Terra and Abigail’s connection is the murder of a close friend, coming across possible Wiccans, opening bloodlines, uncovering disturbing memories, sensing a tracker, and discovering something evil lurking nearby…
I was extremely entertained by this first book in Vicki Vass’s new series a Witch Cat Mystery. The premise is exciting and seemingly unique; it is not childish hocus-pocus, but an engaging paranormal mystery. Although the outright revelation that Terra Rowan had morphed into a feline was suggested…ok, the title should have been a clue, but somehow I missed it. The actual knowledge isn’t disclosed until a few chapters in. The mystery intricately weaves together contemporary events with Terra’s memories of the fateful events surrounding her life in Salem during the witch trials. That part of the story is just as compelling and important to the events surrounding Abigail in the present. I enjoyed the growing BFF connection between Terra and Abigail along with the exploration of herbs and potions and knowledge of Wiccan folklore. Vicki has created several intriguing characters (favorites are Terra, Abigail, Bryson, and Mrs. Twiggs) who develop well throughout the story, but I love Pixel. If I were a cat, that would be me…eat and sleep all day long.
Meet Terra! She has escaped certain death during the infamous Salem Witch Trials in 1692. With the help of her friend and coven leader, Elizabeth, she has survived and is now living in today's world in Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville is home to the famous Biltmore Estate. When her friend Lionel is killed, Terra realizes that evil has been unleashed and is building towards a confrontation that will change life as we know. With the help of Mrs. Twiggs, a retired librarian from William and Mary College and their new friend, Abigail who has just arrived in town, Terra prepares to do battle with an ancient and malignant evil that is trying to destroy the bloodlines of the last witches remaining in today's world. We get to meet some wonderful human and animal characters in this enthralling story. This is a fantastic new paranormal series & I can't wait to read more of it. Meet Pixel, the always hungry cat familiar and Tracker, the ungainly puppy who is really a guardian. Twists and turns in the plot leave you totally surprised at the end
Kindle Unlimited, which is how I got it because amazon keeps having boggles with my account so the gift card wouldn't go through right that got from the writer. Usually wait until the boggles are solved so went ahead and read this, and making use of that 6 month ku bought.
This was one of the 4 1/2 books to me, where I have to figure out which way it goes, more toward the 4 or the 5. There were places where there were minor confusions in continuity or names and the flips from past from or to present sometimes confused me, but overall did like it, and there is a #2 coming out soonish so will probably check that one out, too. I did like the Biltmore background plus several other things being woven in to the story, so did like it, just a few minor ? moments but that happens for various reasons. Since have not read the next one, not even synopsis, not sure if the follow up with be in the same area or not {Asheville, North Carolina}. There is definitely a theme of supernatural elements, myths, etcetera running through this story, so if you are one of the ones that have written reviews before about the 'ungodly' books talking about witchcraft and all that even though they were cozies and such, pass this one on by. Otherwise, it is worth a read.
The book starts out like a nice comfy story--doesn't last long. Someone you think is a person turns out to be an animal. Why? Set in NC a group of ladies gets together to gossip and have a wonderful friendship and then a young girl arrives in town. Lionel a friendly old homeless man is killed. Abigail is scared after spending the night in jail with evil creatures and wants to leave town but Terra convinces her to stay. I don't want to give the story away--suffice it to say it gets better and better with each paragraph. I don't know if there is a follow on story but if so I need it now!! I highly recommend this book.
BLOODLINE by Vicki Vass The First Witch Cat Mystery
In the year 1692 Terra Rowan was a 17 year old girl running for her life. With the screams of her mentor in her ears and not knowing the fate of her friends, Terra took the only chance she had, a chance of a new life, and drank the potion. The potion saved her life, but transformed her. Now Terra lives on the streets in modern day Asheville, North Carolina. The same day her good friend is murdered, a young woman comes to town, playing a song from Terra's past. Unsure if she can be trusted, Terra nonetheless befriends the girl, but both seem to be hunted by a malevolent force. Is this the evil that killed her friend? Will the ladies of the Biltmore Society be able to help, or are they part of the danger?
With rich detail about herbs and crystals, as well as the Biltmore Estate, Vicki Vass initiates readers into a new world, new, yet ever so old. While I had difficulty warming up to some of the characters, I absolutely fell in love with Pixel. His sweet innocence, bravery, and love of food, make him an endearing and immensely lovable character. He also reminds me of my ginger cat, Mariusz!
My enjoyment was profoundly marred, however, by the poor editing. I would be engrossed in the story, then abruptly pushed out of the fictional world by issues with grammar and typos.
BLOODLINE has an absolutely fascinating storyline. I hope that future books in the series develop and expand on the wonderful ideas present here.
FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me a copy of this book in the hopes I would review it.
For years I have been tracing our Family Tree, little knowing that it was an actual tree that I was looking for! Doctors want to know your medical history, and Wiccans need to know their spirit tree. Terra, Pixel, and Tracker need to help. There is a lot of history, especially of Biltmore and the Ashville area, in this story. I had to keep reading in order to find out who the bad guy, I mean girl, was.
This is my first book by Vicki Vass and it gave me chills, thrills, joy and tears, I couldn't put it down. Her characters Terra, Pixal, Mrs. Twiggs, Abigail and Tracker became beloved friends. Her storyline so descriptive yet mysterious and humorous all at the same time. I can't wait to read more.
A cute cozy mystery. I loved that most of the book is narrated from the point of view of a witch that's been turned into a cat. My favorite characters were the cats, especially Pixel <3 He's such a sweetie. I hope the author writes a sequel, I will definitely read it!
I was pleasantly surprised with the concept of Bloodline, I found the book very refreshing, definitely interesting and totally enjoyable. Thank you Vicki Vass for not delivering a "run of the mill " witch story
This is the first book I have read by this author. I like the style of which she writes her story and I am lately getting "into" the paranormal type stories. I also like that a cat narrates the story.
Witches, cats and a mystery. What is not to love. The storyline keeps you reading late into the night. Love that it takes place in Asheville NC. I have family there and enjoyed hearing about some of the familiar places. Looking forward to reading more books in this series.
An absolutely breathtaking, riveting book. I read it in one sitting as I could not put it down. The story connects with modern day and the Salem Witch Trials. Friendships, family, twists and turns. Buckle up and enjoy the journey!
This book is Bloodline: A Witch Cat Mystery, book one of the series, written by Vicki Vass. I enjoyed this story. Very well thought out, great characters and very tricky....some may even say WITCHY plot! (Sorry folks, I couldn't help myself) I like the depths that Ms Vass went to so as to describe each person and where their strengths had been inherited from. My only issue with this book is that it has a non-ending, also known as a cliffhanger. If you have read any of my reviews, you already know that I feel that cliffhangers are the devil. Wait until all of the books are out to read, but be sure to read it. It's a don't miss! I received a complimentary advance readers copy and voluntarily chose to leave this review.
Terra Rowan was chased away from Salem during the witch trials and subsequent hangings. She isn’t sure what happened to her life. The events were so long ago that she has given up any hope of getting back her old life, in fact, it could be murder.
Now living in Asheville, North Carolina she finds that strange things, magical things are happening, and she fears for those she has come to like, even love. It isn’t long before one of them is murdered and she must find out who the killer is before someone else dies.
-- Series: A Witch Cat Cozy Mystery - Book 1 Author: Vicki Vass Publisher: Independent Publisher Genre: Witch Cozy
“Bloodline” is the first book in a new series by author Vicki Vass. The tale is interesting and unique with great characters. The use of the Baltimore Estate and forest is a beautiful setting for a series, and the reader will be drawn to the book for this reason alone.
Ms. Vass writes a crafted story of mystery, intrigue and genuine emotion. The characters are likable, even lovable in some instances, and are diverse enough to be memorable. The animals in this book are loyal, determined and adorable. The use of cats is not unusual in Witch based books but how the cats are used is distinctively attractive.
When Terra’s companion is murdered, and a young girl stands accused, she is suspicious. Before long she understands that not only is Abigail innocent, she has hidden powers that an ancient evil entity is trying to prevent her from using. Terra brings together nine witches to form a coven to stop the evil from taking over and killing others in Asheville and beyond.
Although this story in and of itself is not new to the reader, the perspective it is written from is pleasurable without being the same old song and dance. “Bloodline” is a well written, fast-paced, exciting and entertaining book. Readers will enjoy the interaction between the characters and their environment almost as much as they enjoy the characters themselves.
If there is anything some readers may object too, it is the definition of Wiccan vs. Witchcraft. Many readers who enjoy this type of cozy will argue the distinction between the two descriptions. The description of Wiccan vs. Druid or other types of belief, as well as evil are not the accepted norm in today’s world. However, this does not detract from the books overall enjoyment value.
This book is highly recommended to readers who enjoy witch or paranormal stories with a historical bent. It is hoped that the series will continue and that the reader will enjoy the characters as they evolve.
I was surprised when I started reading the first book in the Bloodline series by Vicki Vass. The quality of her writing is excellent and the presentation of information regarding Wiccans and white magic is beyond what I expected. I usually look at the length of a book before I buy or read because I prefer longer books (at least 300 pages) that allow more involvement in a story. For some reason I didn't check the length of this book. I had no idea it was only 218 pages because I was totally involved with the story. . The book opens in Salem in 1692. Angry mobs are chasing any woman even suspected of being a witch so they can be burned to death. Terra is only 17 and running for her life. Elizabeth gives her a vial and tells her it will save her from the mob and a certain death. Terra drinks the potion not knowing what will happen.
The story picks up in Asheville S.C.,present day at the Leaf and Page. The shop is owned by Mrs. Twiggs who is cooking bacon and scones for those lined up outside waiting for the shop to open. The story is told from these two points of view. Salem at the time of the Witch Trials and present day Asheville where something evil is trying to creep in. Is the new coven strong enough to win the battle against the encroaching evil?
As I mentioned before, the writing is excellent, the pacing kept me interested and the characters are well developed. There are several surprises that I didn't see coming. I read the bio on Ms Vass and discovered she has written over 1,400 articles for the Chicago Tribune. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in this series to find out what happens in Asheville.
I was blown away about the uniqueness of this witch cozy!
I have always been a fan of anything written about the Salem Witch Trials and it is so Obvious that the author is too! Her research and historical knowledge was obvious throughout this book. This is the fist book in the Witch Cat Mystery series and the very title make me curious enough to check it out. Wow, from the opening until the end, I was carried away. I had to finish the book in one sitting because I could not put it down! The fact that I began the book and got totally thrown by the narrator and heroine, Terra was a cat. The way the author wove in the back story (history) of how Terra was changed into a cat during the Salem Witch Hunts was interesting and so well woven into the storyline. I totally loved how the new characters, human and animal entered the story, totally unknowing what fate has in store for them and how their fate is discovered! I loved their unique personalites, each character being totally different, whether animal or human! I loved how Terra was able to help the characters find their true importance which would help her maintain the Bloodline. I can't wait for the second book in this series and will devour it with as much enthusiasm as this first book. A must read if you like the paranormal and witch cozies.
I will admit I was a bit confused at first as to what the character was, then it all clicked. I was so intrigued that I didn't put the book down. And am mourning finishing it. So my question is what is next? I am beyond the excited point for the next book!
As a huge nerd about the Salem Witch Trials, this reader was eager to read this book. It held such a gripping first chapter that I was holding my breath. What would happen? Where were we? Yes, I get the answers to this question but I do enjoy the unknown factor that I was dealt. I really love that this was a new place for mystic and mystery ideas. It was unique to the idea that it was Salem or New Orleans as many usually are. It was an entirely different area. That was fantastic. And let me just say there is the sweetest tubby cat in this book, he really got me. I felt like he was a mix between Garfield and my own cat. In fact, he is the best side kick feline all year.
Vicki is amazing in her details, and she has a stand out small character, that I was thrilled to read. It was neat to know precisely who she was writing about. I know that she gave this character a lot of love. This book was a top spell in a new series, if I could I would gladly give it beyond five stars. I am eager to read the next book if there is one, and would love to have a few of those characters stop by!
Seventeen year old Terra Rowan is fleeing from the Salem Witch Hunters in 1692. She finds herself hiding in a small cave by the ocean. She can still hear them coming for her. In her pocket she has a potion her dear friend and mentor Elizabeth has given her. She takes the potion.
Now three centuries later Terra is in Asheville North Carolina living the contented life as the cat she was turned into when she drank the potion. That is until one day her friend Lionel a human is murdered. Terra has learned much over her 300 plus year life, everything except how to turn herself back into a human. She also has a hard time with communicating with humans until she meets Abigale. Abigale is a young homeless girl who has just gotten to Ashville. Abigale has had problems with hearing voices, including Terra's. Terra convinces her the voice is real and she needs Abigale's help. They also convince the ladies of the Biltmore Society to help Terra.
This book is filled with history, cute cats, I just love Pixel. It also has a lot about herbs, spells, and mystery. I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for book 2.
Here we have A Compleat Guide to Witchcraft with especial attention to the Salem years but delving internationally across the millenia to create a unified view of white and black magic. Set in Asheville, NC, its star attraction, Biltmore, becomes one of the characters as events spanning centuries come into focus in the figure of a runaway from Chicago, Abigail Pierce. She, however, is NOT the main character. That would be Terra Rowan who is central to all the action and can claim Druid ancestory.
Asheville itself proclaims: "Asheville was a primitive outpost in 1797. Frontiersmen such as Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett traveled through in the early days. Asheville was little more than a crossroads of Indian trails on a plateau surrounded by mountains and rivers on all sides." (https://www.exploreasheville.com)
Now note that word CROSSROADS as it becomes key to much of the action in the book--which is about as much of a spoiler as you are going to get from me other than to know that animals, vegetables and minerals ALL play their parts in this fascinating tale. (And, yes, I DO want to visit!)
Bloodline is the first book in the Witch Cat Mystery series and if Vicki Vass continues writing as she did in Bloodline, it will be a series that will be very enjoyable. What kept me reading and wanting more was the story for the point of Terra Rowan. Terra lived in Salem during the witch trials and escaped by drinking a potion. The story takes place in present day Asheville, NC and Terra has been draw to the city and the Bitmore Forest. She is attracted to the Leaf and Page owned by Beatrice Twiggs. Mrs. Twiggs is a member of the Ladies of the Bitmore Society that preserves the magic of the Bitmore Forest. What I really enjoyed was the fact that I would forget that Terra is a cat until she goes hunting or plays with Pixel. Pixel is my favorite character in the book. When he announced he was Terra's familiar I just knew that the book and series are going to keep my attention and leave me wanting more, which I enjoy. I loved the detail Vicki gives to the story. Not only is the story about magic and spells, but has a mystery which keeps you guessing.
Can you imagine trying to discover a killer being a cat? This is the story of Terra (Earth in English), a human witch that was transformed to a cat a hundred years ago, and that doesn't know how to return to her human body! The story is told between the modern day Asheville and the past within the Salem witch hunt, this mixture makes the book complete and mysterious at the same time. Terra wants to discover who killed her human friend Lionel, and will have the help of the young Abigail, who "listens to animal voices", the hungry cat, Pixel, and the ladies of the Biltmore Society (quite "charming" women if you ask me!). This is a book full of magic, potions, herbs and enchantments, perfect for Wicca lovers! I liked this book, but it was too much magic for my taste, I really don't know anything about the Wicca religion, so for me is something completely unknown and total fantasy... I prefer something more real, but this doesn't mean the book wasn't interesting or well written! Just for fantasy lovers! Ready to meet Terra?
Ms. Vass has written an attention-grabbing book with historical fiction along with paranormal activity too. Centering around the Witch Trials in Salem Massachusetts of the early 1690’s, we are introduced to the main character Terra Rowen, a novice witch who was part of a coven of young witches. When Terra and her fellow coven members are hunted down, Terra hides away in a cave. When she fears she is going to be found Terra drinks a special potion that was given to her by her friend Elizabeth when faced with danger of being found out. Terra resurfaces approximately 325 years later in the town of Asheville, North Carolina. This town has the beautiful Biltmore Plantation Estate located there. The town in prior times was homes to those who worked for the Plantation. You will be drawn to the many characters and their parts in this book as well as Terra who has now taken on the form of a cat. If any future books are as captivating as this book was, I will be first in line to get the next one.
This book really takes you back to a time that's old. The Salem witch trials, where we meet Terra and her sister witches before they were betrayed by the very people they helped. Leader Elizabeth knew the darkness was there and needed to save her most trusted apprentice to bring forth to the future to save quite possibly the world. Terra never understood why Elizabeth turned her into a cat but finally figured it kept her concealed from the darkness. When young Abigail comes into her life she knows what she must do before the darkness destroys them all. This was really an awesome book, full of history and excitement. It had a lot of edge of your seat action. I can't wait for book two. I voluntarily agreed to review this book. My review is my own honest opinion.
This review is from: Bloodline: A Witch Cat Cozy Mystery Book One (Witch Cat Mystery 1) (Kindle Edition) I really enjoyed this new cozy witch mystery book. It is told from Terra Bowen's point of view, who happens to be a Salem witch, transformed into a cat. Loved the twist! We are in modern day Asheville, North Carolina, where circles are becoming complete, when all the right people are in the right place, for mysteries to be answered. I enjoyed this journey and cannot wait for the next! I loved the characters and especially the environment! I love Pixel!!!! Very little violence and clean! I was impressed, with the level of knowledge of Wiccan and the Goddesses. I learned a lot. Thank you for the wonderful journey!!
