In many ways this book begins where another book I just finished, "Once There Was Fire: A Novel of Old Hawaii" by Stephen Shender, ended. Mr. Shender produced an epic telling of the history of the Hawaiian islands and more particularly of Kamehameha, ending with an island paradise fully under the control of the haoles. In a well-plotted adventure combining our fascination with shipwrecks and the forces of nature, the historic groundwork for Mr. Becker's tale begins with a newspaper article written about events concurrent with the westernization aforementioned and a volcanic eruption which changed the seascape of the area. Very cleverly dovetailed with Hawaii's various indigenous movements (including the Japanese who at one time outnumbered the Hawaiians), the overlapping factions' interplay intersects separate missions undertaken by Storm per et fils.

Confused yet? Don't be! The action is cleanly laid out (why, yes, it would make a GREAT screenplay) and twists and turns can be followed with glee and anticipation regardless of whether you've encountered any of the characters in other novels. Now I must admit to being very glad to have the modern convenience of Google available as I eread and stumbled upon a repeated reference to Captain Ron. The cognoscenti are snickering up their sleeves at my ignorance but I invite the rest of you to expand your knowledge base and take advantage of tools at hand. It always helps to know the inside jokes.

A HURRICANE, A VOLCANO, AND PIRATES, OH MY, May 11, 2017


I was given an advance copy of this book in exchange for a honest review. Steven Becker writes thrilling adventure stories that have amazing characters and exotic locales. This book is no exception.
The Storms, father and son, are both former CIA operatives who are in constant competition with each other. The edginess caused by their competitive egos keeps the reader dynamically involved and routing for positive and successful outcomes. This book has the protagonists searching for lost treasure from the time when the USA and Japan were each claiming proprietorship of the Hawaiian Islands. If a self-proclaimed modern day Japanese Shogun finds and retrieves the vast treasure, he coud conceivably start a third World War. The other rival for the treasure is a group of Hawaiians looking to encourage Hawaiian independence. Add in a very active volcano that over the years has added to the real estate footprint over where the ill-fated "pirate" ship was sunk in a cataclysmic combination of a severe hurricane and violent eruption of the volcano and you have an exciting, breath taking Hawaiian adventure.

An SB. Spy Adventure based on a Japanese Business Man Who Wants to be Shogun

SB. has. penned the second spy novel of the Storm Force series. The Team is hired for a specific mission, which is to determine what a Japanese businessman has in store for the Hawaiian Islands. The team determined the man wants to be the next Shogan. The man travels to Hawaii from Japan to determine where he is in the Line of session. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

This is a great series and the settings are in and around the Keys in Florida.  If you like a well written mystery where the good guys chase the bad ones, then you will love this book.I am surprised by how well it was written.  Steve Becker is a darn good writer.  Storm Force is based around an ultra expensive painting and from one setting to another including the Vatican this book tells a great story of stolen paintings and leaves the ending set up for another book.

Another fast paced adventure

Father and Son are at it again. Will the sons indulgence in women and booze get them both killed. Lots of action and mayhem and a fantastic story make it a good read.

incompetence of Protagonists is Endless & Annoying

Uninspiring at best. These guys are supposed to be professionals & they screw up & get bested at every turn. Totally annoying. Not a good read at all.

Lava Ship

Storm and son are together again looking for a ship filled with treasures buried in a lava flow. It was a hard to put it down. I’m sure you will enjoy it.
