Identity Matters: Discovering Who You Are in Christ

Rate this book
Experience the unshakeable certainty of your inheritance in Christ and the wonder of being a child of God. Our understanding of our identity matters. It is the foundation of well-being, self-esteem, and self worth, which directly influences our quest for purpose and significance in life. Unfortunately, we live in a society that insists on performance and people pleasing as the only acceptable pathways to security and acceptance. Many Christians are wearing themselves out on this treadmill of self-promotion and achievement, unaware that they are ultimately building their lives on shifting sand. True Christian identity rests upon the rock solid promise that we are the children of God. Discovering who we are in Christ unlocks an inheritance that is eternal, secure, and overflowing with transforming grace that changes our lives at the deepest level, unleashing amazing possibilities for life and ministry. God's promise brings the unshakable certainty that at the core of our lives, we are forever hidden in Christ.

Terry Wardle speaks on the love of God forming identity. If you're in the spiritual formation world but want a book to give to someone in your sphere that doesn't dive *too* deep into the mystics and monasticism but still communicates the heart of God's love in a transformative way, this is it!

Great message! We all need the reminder that our identity is in being a child of God and nothing else. I enjoyed how he has reflection questions at the end of every chapter. I think this would be a great book to go through with 1-2 friends. I didn’t relate to some of Wardle’s word pictures like the “small-ego” and being “Christ- possessed.” I also felt that some of his chapters had content that overlapped and themes that were repetitive. Would recommend this book to friends who, like myself, struggle with putting their identity in performance rather than what God says of them.

Terry Wardle has the voice of reason and the praxis of a soul prophet. Having lived through the journey of the false self towards the true self, and still exploring the depths of the difference between the two, Wardle is a guide to the beginner exploring such territory. An easy read, good reflection questions, great everyday stories and enough material to go back on for a second look.

This is one of those rare books that starts off solid, only to gain more and more momentum as it goes on. I do not find that to be common in the world of Christian literature. Dr. Wardle sets forth a compelling vision for why our identity is of the utmost importance, and then he gives us a pathway towards living into that identity.

Powerful book that explains how we find our identity in worldy things and provides guidance on how to firmly root our identity in Christ instead.

I thought this would be similar to other books I’ve read but it surprised me how helpful and practical it was. A book I’ll revisit!

We did it as a study at church and I got more out of the book in a group setting than I ever would have on my own. The premise that we are children of God is so basic and yet, we need the reminder.
