Captain Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington, knows finding a bride in London will not be easy—not since he has been notoriously dubbed as the "Pirate Earl". What he didn't expect was to get abducted—and to have his escape go horribly awry when an innocent lady gets caught in the crossfire.
Amateur physician Emma St. James is on her way to meet her betrothed when she is rescued by an injured gentleman. Despite her shock after discovering he is the Pirate Earl, Emma feels drawn to the man who saved her life. Duty forces them apart, but when they meet again on the high seas, Darington will risk all—his fortune, his name, and even his life to keep her safe.
Amanda Forester holds a PhD in clinical psychology and a Masters degree in theology. As a psychologist, she has worked as a clinical researcher and a university instructor (what they call you when they don’t want to give you tenure). None of which has anything to do with writing romance novels. After trying for many years to stop the internal storylines floating around her head, she finally gave up and wrote one down. Now when she is caught daydreaming and talking to herself she can just say, “I’m plotting a scene for my next novel,” which sounds so much better than, “I’m hallucinating and responding to internal stimuli.”
Amanda lives in the Pacific Northwest with her officer and a gentleman husband and their two remarkably active, naturally brilliant children. They share their home with two fiendishly destructive cats and one lazy dog.
The Highlander’s Series represents Amanda's first venture into writing historical fiction, so she would greatly enjoy hearing from readers.
Action packed sequel to If the Earl Only Knew. There were a few scenes that were duplicates from the 1st book because they kinda overlap in the timeline of events. I still enjoyed it immensely. Far more biblical quotes in this book than the previous, but I didn't mind since Emma was very strong in her faith.
Emma St. James
The one and only love scene faded to black but that didn't deter from the book at all. If I had teenage daughters, I would happily allow them to read this series.
I fell in love with this series from the first book. I adored the tough, smart, and loyal Lady Kate. Knowing what she and her twin brother, Robert, endured as children made me want to see them both find happiness. I was anxious for Robert’s story. Especially so because Robert was known as the Pirate Earl. Who doesn’t love a good pirate romance? All that danger, swashbuckling, and romancing on the high seas! And I was not disappointed. There are so many threads woven into this story creating an exciting tale of betrayal, revenge, and love. And there’s even a sunken treasure involved!
Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington and his twin sister, Lady Katherine, were essentially orphaned and briefly sent to debtor’s prison at age 12. An unknown enemy had stolen everything from them and so Robert, Dare, had taken to the high seas to restore the family coffers. He’d become a feared privateer. Somber and steady, and never failing to take his prize. He loved the sea. But it was time to find a wife. Dare found the high seas less treacherous than society but knew, as Earl of Darington, he had no choice. Emma St. James had enjoyed her life making rounds with and assisting her father, a doctor and surgeon. After his death, Emma lived with her step mother and step brother who served as trustees of her father’s, and now her, estate. Emma would soon come into her majority, inheriting everything. But it seemed her step mother and step brother had plans for her. Plans that involved Emma marrying her horrid step brother. Plans Emma wanted no part of. When Emma refused, her step brother began efforts to have her committed. Knowing women had no power in a man’s world, Emma planned to flee and marry a man she’d never met. And that’s where the adventure began. When Dare’s sister, Kate, was kidnapped, Dare chased after them. Circumstances threw Emma and Dare together and Dare, though injured, saved Emma’s life. But the danger only escalated. It seemed Dare and Emma were both being pursued by nefarious forces. So Dare and Emma find themselves traveling through England and onto the high seas. Trying to evade one danger while pursuing another. All the while their attraction to one another is growing. Neither knew what to call the strange sensations they felt around each other but they were willing to risk anything to explore it further. This story was a non-stop, action-packed adventure. I loved Dare and Emma. They were the perfect match for one another. Emma was tough, brave, and resourceful. She’d assisted her father growing up and was an excellent doctor. She was able to stay in control in situations that would cower most men. She was an innocent though. She’d been more or less isolated growing up since her step mother wanted to ensure she didn’t marry. Her attraction to and feelings for Dare confused her at times. I couldn’t help but chuckle at the thoughts that went through her head when she’d admire Dare’s physique. I loved her optimism too. She chose to see each obstacle as a chance for adventure. “Real life adventures were much more uncomfortable and messy than reading about them in books, but Emma was no less enthralled.” No matter the dangers ahead, Emma had faith they’d see it through. Through Emma, Dare found faith too. Dare was absolutely darling. He wasn’t comfortable making small talk with women and felt completely clueless when it came to wooing one. Yet with Emma, he was oddly content. Unless he fixated on her curves, then he became tongue tied again. He may not have been a master of conversation, but some of his proclamations to Emma were more romantic than any sonnet. It was obvious they cared for one another but Dare didn’t want the danger that was following them to touch Emma. And as the danger increased, the odds of surviving weren’t high. Dare was prepared to risk everything, even his life, to keep Emma safe. And Emma was determined to take that risk right alongside him. The characters of Dare and Emma are brilliantly crafted and will win your heart from the beginning. This was a grand tale I could not put down. A fascinating story with superb writing, intriguing plot, a strong but haunted hero, and a heroine with enough gumption and faith for both of them. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series! I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
. . I listened to this audible version via Hoopla, provided through my local public library. The narrator was very articulate and pleasant.
"I believe our hardships give us the fortitude to triumph over our challenges", remarked Emma . . . . "I do not care to glory in my tribulations and patience is an entirely overrated character trait", remarked Kate. . This was a historical romance novel that provided lots of entertainment. The background of the Darington siblings if chocked full of sadness, loss, despair, and finally, a renewed status in the elite tier, as they revel in the monies extracted from privateering. They use a great deal of their money to release those less fortunate, from debtors prison, a place they themselves were forced into without cause.
The entertainment includes nefarious attacks, including the kidnapping of the heroine. The constant twists and turns captivate the reader and compel them to continue on and on to discover what exciting events may occur. The chemistry between these two experience is described in a fashion free from the offensive treatment of sexual subjects and from the use of obscenity and is so much appreciated. There was an exemplary H.E.A.
Robert “Dare” Ashton, the Earl of Darington, is an English privateer for the Royal Navy. His latest score involves incredible wealth when he strips a France freighter of its cargo of gold, silver, and jewels. Now plump in pocket, Dare turns his attention to settling down and he begins to look for a wife. An impromptu trip with his sister to a wedding results in their attempted kidnapping and him getting shot. Lucky for him, help arrives to save the day and his life.
Emma St. James is on her way to the docks to board a ship for America to wed a sea captain sight unseen. Her stepmother and brother’s repeated attempts to marry her off and steal her inheritance take on a sinister tone when they threaten to have her declared insane if she doesn’t do as they say. With only a maid in tow, Emma runs away. A random chance of fate puts in her in the path of kidnappers and an injured man. Using her wits, Emma hides the injured man and then helps him to a local inn where they pretend to be man and wife while she tends to his injuries.
An investigation shows the man who destroyed Dare’s family and robbed them blind is the same man behind the kidnapping. He sends Emma away to keep her safe as but they soon meet up again when Emma is forced to hide from her stepbrother on his ship. Dare will do anything to keep Emma safe…and he may have to before it’s all done.
The second book in Amanda Forester’s The Daring Marriages series is Dare’s story. If you read book one, If the Earl Only Knew, you remember that Dare and his twin sister Kate suffered greatly after their father died and their estate was plundered. Sent to debtors prison as children, they escaped and preserved though they still bear the scars of their childhood. Kate’s story is told in book one. You do not have to read it in order to understand the long reaching arc, Forester does a mild recap, however, it is amusing and introduces the main characters, the world, and sets the stage for the finale.
Earl Interrupted is an action-packed, adventurous concoction of humor and charm that introduces, by chance, two people who are perfect for one another. The long reaching arc is elevated by various subplots sprinkled throughout though the overall tension and drama is pretty lowkey. A steady hand opens the story and sets the stage with two eye opening introduction scenes. We watch our hero pirate a ship for it’s bounty while learning our heroine is an amateur physician who is in the midst of trying to keep her fortune from being stolen. Using dual first-person narrative, Forester switches between our hero and heroine, building up the anticipation as they inch their way to one another. The real fun begins with they meet. I do want to add that if you are looking for a historically proper or correct romance, this isn’t it. Forester takes too many liberties but the story works regardless.
Heavily character driven, Emma and Dare are delightful characters whose personalities shine through. Their witty banter and sexy flirtations kept me smiling throughout. Emma is quite unique in that she trained as a physician’s assistant under her father and when he passed, he left most his fortune (homes, etc…) to her. Raised almost exclusively by her father; Emma is opinionated, forthright, loyal, and intelligent. She makes her own choices in life, not at all that concerned with the priorities imposed by society or her stepmother’s wishes.
Dare is admirable, honorable, loyal, and A PIRATE!! :) He was forced to take on an adult role as a child after his father’s death and the steward’s betrayal. Sent with his sister to debtor’s prison, he has since used his wits to not only raise them both but replenish what was stolen from them. Now he searches for the man who destroyed his family while plundering other ships for treasure. :) As the current Earl, Dare knows he must marry but is positively being dubbed “the pirate Earl” will not work to his advantage.
And it doesn’t. He is turned down twice.
The romance is fun to watch unfold. Their attraction is instant and the flirtation lively but this couple stays rather chaste and uses their time together to get to know one another. I enjoyed that Dare didn’t judge Emma on her actions-thinking her forward or trying to trap him as one of this era might think. He showed her respect and admiration which elevated him even more in my eyes. There are a few stolen kisses, some heady looks, and a few sexual innuendos made but that is about all you’re going to get till the end. Dare proposes to Emma but she has committed herself to marrying someone else and doesn’t want to be someone’s obligation. Dare wants Emma but in what way is something he still needs to figure out.
An energetic and varied cast of secondary characters infiltrates the storyline, adding humor and depth. Dare’s sister Kate is in attendance and still fighting her attraction to the Earl of Wynbrook but he isn’t giving up yet. I adored Dare’s ship crew and how they immediately draw Emma into their group. Her maid Sally is a plot device used to show just how unconventional Emma is. Emma’s stepmother and brother aren’t so much villainous as selfish and greedy. Emma manages to elude quite easily.
Forester wraps up the storyline back where it all began; on the sea. Dare enacts his revenge and Emma once again comes to the rescue and saves the day. Most of the loose ends are wrapped with viable explanations and expected results.
I did have some issues. I felt some of the explanations resolved a little too easily for the stated damage done. One issue I really fought hard against was Emma herself. I loved her independence and general joyful outlook but there was a sense of naiveness to her that seems out of sorts. She does things that had anyone but Dare been witness to it, she would have been ostracised immediately. Forester gets around it by keeping Emma mostly secluded but gossip was a form of currency back then and no one was immune. Especially when one has a maid who doesn’t like them. And while I had no issues with the fact she was religious and vocal about it (she says little prays and quotes scripture throughout, I did find it odd that it received such a strong position in the book when seemed to serve no real purpose.
Regardless, Earl Interrupted is an enjoyable lightweight historical romance filled with humor, romance, high sea adventure, and of course, a well earned happily ever after.
Series: The Daring Marriages #2 Publication Date: 1/2/18
This is a daring, fast-paced adventure with well-developed characters and a tight plot line. It sucked me in from the first word and held me captive through the last! While this is part of a series (two books I believe) you can read them in any order – even the author says so. If you are looking for steam, it isn’t in this book – but the story is wonderful, the characters relatable and the situations are exciting. There is never a dull or boring moment in this book!
Emma St. James is a beautiful, smart, and level-headed young woman and she’s in a boatload of trouble. She was the apple of her father’s eye and when he died he left the entire estate to her – except for a settlement for her step-mother. When she is just a couple of weeks away from obtaining her majority and thus her inheritance, her step-mother, and step-brother try to force her into marrying the step-brother – otherwise, they will have her declared insane and sent to Bedlam. She’s never been afraid of a challenge and decides to betroth herself to someone she has never met – in America. (Yeah, that part didn’t make sense to me either given that she is a smart girl). She takes off for Plymouth where she will be taking a ship across the waters to her betrothed, but along the way, her coach overturns and the drunken driver takes off with their horses. If it isn’t bad enough to be left stranded in the cold on the side of the road with a ruined carriage, another coach stops, but instead of offering assistance, they intend to rob (and worse) Emma and her maid.
Captain Lord Robert Ashton, second Earl of Darington, the 'Pirate Earl', Dare is absolutely tongue-tied around females. He sister has convinced him that he needs to find a wife and he’s tried but had no luck. Then, when he and his sister are returning from the wedding of his friend’s sister – Dare’s sister is kidnapped. Dare speeds out after the kidnappers and manages to rescue his sister. He does rescue her, but he gets shot and taken prisoner himself. He’s lying on the floor of the coach, bleeding out, when the coach suddenly stops and he hears the kidnappers raising their voices. They have stopped for a wrecked coach on the side of the road. Barely conscious, Dare realizes that the kidnappers are threatening a young woman.
Emma is trying to plot her escape and sees no way out – when – out of the blue comes a rescuer from inside the coach. As she realizes that her rescuer is wounded and evidently a prisoner as well, they manage to escape on foot. Thus begins a long journey with trouble dogging them at every step. They are pursued by the kidnappers as well as the wicked step-brother – and Emma even ends up on a ship full of smugglers who think she is a light-skirt. Wall-to-wall action and adventure await our intrepid hero and heroine around every corner.
Our heroine has a bright sunny disposition and a strong faith – and our hero has no faith. Emma and Dare each realize that they care for the other, but they doubt that the other cares for them. Each feels that they are lacking in some way, but they see and appreciate the strengths of the other.
I loved this read and was sad to see it end. Now, I think I’ll go back and read the first book in the series.
"I requested and received this e-book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher."
This is the second story in The Daring Marriages series and I must say that this one was as wonderful as the first story. The author continues to build the world around her characters as much as she builds them and this is what keeps drawing me into their stories.
This story is of Robert, Kate's twin brother [book 1] and I was looking forward to finding out who'll be the one to catch him. Truly, I was pleasantly surprised that the author has found a perfect match for him. He needed someone as smart and sassy as Emma.
This story is filled with adventure, humor and great characters. Highly recommending it to all but especially to those that love sea adventures.

When he comes to, he realizes the coach has stopped and when he gets out, he sees his abductors robbing a young woman. He is unable to walk away and leave her. Dare awakes and sees Emma, he knows they will have to marry and asks her why she was traveling alone, when she tells him she was on her way to meet her betrothed, Dare is not happy with the news. Emma and Dare get to know each other a bit better and he tells her she should leave, but she refuses. Thankfully, Kate and Wynbrook show up and are able to help them escape.

She hides in her room and hopes to talk to the woman after Eustace leaves, but she learns the woman left right away. She attempts to catch her, but soon learns the woman and ship she was supposed to take to America have both left without her and Eustace is hot on her heels. She manages to escape Eustace, but finds herself in a world of trouble.
Dare can't believe that the woman he loves is on a smuggler's ship and turns away from his own quest to save her. Emma is overjoyed to see Dare again and when he saves her and plans to lose his quarry to return her to England, she flat out refuse to let him.
These two are perfect for each other, Emma is a ray of sunshine and Dare is noble and steadfast. This story is a non-stop adventure from the first page until the very last word and I loved every minute of the ride! It is well written and fast paced with a lot of action, a couple of warm love scenes, pirates, treasure, revenge, greedy relatives and a very hard earned HEA.
This story is the second in the series, but it could easily be read as a stand alone title with no problems as it runs concurrently with the previous book.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*
Great Story! Excellent Narration by Carolyn Morris! (audible review).
This book was so much fun. I loved every minute of it! It had great characters, loved Emma and Dare. They were great together, had great chemistry. There is a lot of attraction and desire and the sex scene was extremely mild but very nicely written.
The story line and plot was great, lots of action, and things happening all the time. Carriage crashes, high seas adventures and just a lot of fun. There is so much great dialogue throughout the entire book. Loved it.
As for the narration, it was Carolyn Morris so YES it was amazing! Love listening to her narrations. She has such a wonderful voice to listen too. She does a great job on the men and everyone gets their own distinct voice. She reads with emotion as called for. She gets better and better every time I listen to her.
This was my first book by Amanda Forester, but I really enjoyed this pirate tale. Full of excitement and adventure, I was surprised by how it kept my attention throughout. It is perfect for someone looking for a fast-paced historical romance with less graphic sex scenes. The characters are well-developed and, even with the aforementioned "clean" nature of the book, there is still tons of sexual tension and chemistry. I also thought it had the perfect amount of time on the sea . Many books which proclaim to be about pirates have maybe one scene, but this one really let the piracy influence his character and the plot. Highly recommend!
Although this is being marketed as book number two in a series, you do not need to have read the first book in order for this one to make sense. I have't read the first, but from the synopsis I did read, it would appear that that story focuses on Dare's sister, while this book focuses on him.
Speaking just on this story, I feel it fell solidly in the middle of the road for me. It had its moments where I was utterly captivated by the events, and moments that I felt dragged on to the point it became tedious. I feel I must also point out because I know this is a fact that will turn some people off to this story, but there some slight religious overtones sprinkled throughout the story. Emma holds her faith very close, so there is some praying, and some scripture reciting. I personally wasn't bothered by this, I did feel as though it was a little odd given the way it was done, but I know there are some people out here who will not read anything even remotely religious.
The characters on the whole seemed to be well developed with interesting backstories, but when it came to them being together, it seemed as though there was some key element missing that I just couldn't put my finger on.
All things considered, I believe this story may still appeal to those who enjoy slightly historical romance novels with a bi of high sea adventures and intrigue thrown in. I would give this author another chance!
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
The dare is to not fall in love with not only the characters, but the author as well. Adventure on the high seas spills over to dry land with a Pirate Earl and an amateur physician. Earl Interrupted is an active look at a dangerous love affair that ignites the heart and inspires the soul. Any tale that inspires women to be courageous in not only matters of the heart, but following their dreams is A - okay with me. Robert and Emma steam up the pages of this action packed thrill ride.
Well... it had its moments. I did get my money's worth out of it I suppose, but I only paid $1.79 at Ollie's so...
The problems were the characters...and possibly the basic formula for one of them.
The H - not exactly talkative, son of an Earl who'd gotten his title as an award for service to the crown. Not sure how that worked, any more than I am about how he ended up with an entailed family pile. Also more than a bit baffled as to where the H's twin sister would go to school given the time period. His dad's service netted an enemy who poisoned dear old dad, robbed him blind in the process, and tossed the two kids in debtor's prison. They got out by virtue of a tutor and the courts. H has spent time in the Royal Navy. Did I mention he's an earl? Or that his father apparently continued service even though he had two small children (and their mom had died in childbirth)?
The h - basically a Cinderella of sorts in that her father married a woman to be a "mother" for her, only instead of a couple of ugly stepsisters, she got an ugly and ambitious stepbrother. Her pollyanaesque personality in regards to trusting the wrong people gave her a TSTL vibe. Didn't help that she'd try to wait things out until it was clear she had to do something.
She reluctantly takes off to the nearest port after finally coming to the realization that stepbrother was serious about having her committed if she didn't marry him. Takes Sullen Sally as a maid/chaperone, and of course, the coachman who got himself plastered and wrecked the carriage. The maid in question had ambitions of being a maid to a proper lady but her behavior just about guaranteed nobody would keep her in their employee for long, and the coachman abandoned them along the roadside.
The H rescued his twin and got shot/captured in the process. His kidnappers come across her and her maid. He manages to rescue her and they take off on foot, with the maid bringing her trunk. Not sure how she managed that. Anyway, much hiding, dodging, misunderstanding, and being oblivious later, they finally decide they really like each other, the bad guys are taken care of, and I can go read something else.
The events of this one take place somewhat concurrently with the ones from book one in the series (If the Earl Only Knew) but as each is focused on a different twin (Robert "Dare" in this one and Kate in the other) they could also work as standalones. To be honest, I've forgotten most of the details of the first book already, so it was pretty much as if I was starting here anyway--and I did just fine ;)
Emma and Dare's story is a sweet romance with more than a touch of danger thrown in. It was a bit frustrating at times--much of their issues could have been resolved with frank discussions--but overall it was a lot of fun to read, and the ending was more than satisfying. There is a touch of religion here that I wasn't quite expecting--Emma finds a lot of comfort in her faith and occasionally quotes scripture and prays--it's not overwhelming, but if that bothers you just be warned.
Can't wait to see where Ms. Forester will go next!
Rating: 4 stars / B+
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Quite an unexpected Regency romance with a pirate Lord and a young heiress fleeing a nasty step relatives. I quite enjoyed it even though it took me so long to read. Emma St. James is no shrinking violet and it seems her undeterred faith and her willingness to take action keeps her one step ahead of a nasty fate. Dare, Captain Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington, is a man used to action and mincing about drawing rooms looking for a suitable wife is some thing he's not suited to. Glowering and stoney silences are more his forté in these gruelling exercises. All of course add to his reputation as the Pirate Earl. 'As a child, Emma had dreamed of her wedding. What little girl did not?' Emma's prospects now seem so different as she sets forth to be a bride to an unknown grandson of a Lord in America. It's either this, marriage to her step brother, or an asylum. As fate would have it Emma's plans take a hiatus when she and Dare meet on a dark and stormy night (well not quite!), but Dare does rescue Emma from a carriage accident and capture by brigands. The latter it turns out are no accident! The adventures go on from here. Emma armed with her faith and resolve, Dare with his persistence and earned reputation. The dance between the two is excruciatingly sweet in a nice way. 'Earl Interrupted' is a fitting title. Because he is, constantly!
After their guardian betrayed them Lord Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington and his sister, Lady Kate were orphaned at a young age and were briefly thrown in debtor’s prison. Robert made his fortune as the “Pirate Earl” and now he’s decided it’s time he looked for a bride. Emma St. James has always enjoyed life helping her father, but since he died her step-mother has been after her to marry her horrid son to get their hands on her inheritance before Emma comes into her majority. Emma refuse and she over hears them declare he will put her in asylum declaring having gone mad after her father died. Robert and Kate are leaving a wedding reception when she’s kidnapped and he’s shot. Robert rides to the rescue and in the meantime he encounters another lady in need of rescuing too. Lady Emma is running away and her carriage wrecks and she’s set upon by thieves and robbers. Robert and Emma embark on a journey across the country side to rescue his sister and find themselves needing to be rescued. This is only the beginning of their intriguing adventure that’s filled with twists and turns. A great story with strong characters I know you’ll love!!! This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.
Earl Interrupted by Amanda Forester is book Two in "The Daring Marriages" series. This is the story of Captain Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington and Emma St. James. I have read (and loved the previous book 'If the Earl Only Knew' but feel this can be a standalone book. This book story line runs at the same time as the last book so there is not days or years past since the last book timeline. Dare and his twin sister have return after being on the run for so long to keep out of debtor's prison. Dare has enough money to return and pick up his life as a Earl along with finding a wife. But Dare soon learns that someone from his at sea days are after him. On one such attempt to take his sister he ends up saving and meeting Emma. Emma is trying to start her a new life away from her Step mother and Step brother. After Emma's refusal to sign papers to turn over her inheritance or marry her stepbrother has her in big trouble with them. But then she meets Dare and that takes her and him into a new chapter in them starting a new life....but they had to go through some hoops to get there. I had been waiting to see what Dare's story would be! It did not disappoint at all....loved it!
Lots of intrigue and adventure in this Pirate story. it was full of action but had a few slow place that dragged a little. If you are looking for steaminess this might not be the book for you. This one has religious overtones, they quote scripture and pray. It was fine with me and it fit the heroine's personality. Over all it was an enjoyable read.
Beautiful. Endearing. I loved Earl Interrupted. It's everything historical romance should strive to be and I cannot wait for more from Forester.
The Gist: Dare and Emma have both found themselves dealing with a similar issue-- the need to marry. Simple and straight forward. That is until an unknown danger crosses their paths and brings them into each others lives. With danger and chaos at every turn they may be one another's only chance at finding safety and answers. Eee!
I absolutely loved Dare and Emma. He's all sexy alpha ship captain who gets flustered and nervous with women. And Emma has such strength and character! Even if it comes with a bit of social awkwardness of her own. Dare was so dang adorkable and endearing and I just adored him as he stumbled his way through wooing Emma.
I enjoyed their romance so much. It's slow burning but it just everything. It had me smiling and warmed the heart. I loved watching them both stumble about. Not quite sure of what they were doing but yearning for more and figuring things out bit by bit. They're just so cute and sweet together. There's very little heat, though. Some kissing but nothing more until the very end. But it worked for them and was nice.
Earl Interrupted was just an entertaining jaunt. There's a bit of danger surrounding them. Near misses and curious connections. I enjoyed the backdrop to their romance as they tried to figure everything out-- both concerning the threat to their lives and where matters of the heart were concerned.
Forester has a lovely way of telling a story. It's so very easy to fall in love with her writing and the characters she brings to life on every page.
3.8 stars - This one was better than the first in the series. It starts off with a bang and the story just gets better from there. The plot continues from where they left of in the 1st book, namely that Dare is on the hunt for his father’s killer and Emma on the run from her step-mother & step-brother.
There were a few scenes that were duplicates of the previous book due to the fact that Dare & Emma’s story overlapped with John & Kate’s. I skipped those parts but wasn’t overly annoyed with the repetition. I actually liked seeing John and Kate from Dare & Emma’s POV. As I mentioned about the first book, I thought the POV of the villain was unnecessary so I skipped those parts too.
Just as it’s predecessor, there were some Christian elements. This one had a lot more Bible quotes and discussions about faith. For a book that was a little heavy on Christian elements I was shocked that the intimate scenes were so detailed. While there were no explicit sex scenes, at around 85% there was a moderately descriptive petting scene.
I enjoyed both Emma and Dare’s characters as well as the overall plot.
CONTENT Romance: Kissing, Moderately detailed intimacy (petting/wandering hands) no explicit sex scenes though. Language: None that I can remember Violence: Mild (a bit of swashbuckling)
I love pirates and I thoroughly enjoyed this book by a new to me author. The story and the characters grabbed me from the beginning. I will definitely be going back to read the first in the series.

I’m a true believer that books are brought to us when we need them the most, this treasure was given to me to review as I was embarking on a stressful journey and trying not to think about turbulence (actual turbulence from the plane)j. My grandma’s always stressed that the only way to fly is to do so with a good book, and I’m happy to say that this one did the trick for me, and it will do the trick for you!
I love the switch on this romance, its not the girl who gets kidnapped but the guy, and the entire time you see him fighting his growing attraction to a very wholesome wonderfully beautiful woman who says she’s to be engaged–making him feel like he’s truly living up to his name.
I loved the spirit behind Emma, her desire to help people even if it put her in a bad position was something that really made me as a reader like her even if she was a bit flighty and innocent at times, it’s believably done because she lived a very sheltered life, she’s often spouting Bible Verses in times of trouble and rather than coming off preachy you find that she has this deep rooted faith in herself, in God, and in the world around her that is inspiring not off putting. It’s not a christian romance and I don’t believe it reads like one since I read everything under the sun, I think I’d be a good judge of that particular genre.
The love story is slow building between the two but that doesn’t mean the tension isn’t there, they’re constantly fighting something that both of them see but neither want to admit, and in the end, when she’s suddenly seeking the Captains protection and he’s given the opportunity to show her his true colors and his true feelings–you almost breathe a sigh of relief that they are finally coming clean.
I love that she accepts Darlington where he’s at. And I love that she challenges him to be a better person. He’s a true hero in every sense of the word and I love the fact that he’s also considered a pirate even though you learn early on that he’s accepted by the crown and does things on the up and up.
All in all a great swashbuckling mystery romance that had me grinning from ear to ear and breathing a sigh of containment when finished, I give it five roses that rule!
Captain Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington, the 'Pirate Earl', has returned to London to find a bride. Unfortunately, Dare is more comfortable on the high seas than with mingling with the ton and is never more obvious when two young ladies refuse his marriage proposal. While out in his carriage with his sister, they are attacked by highwaymen. Dare manages to push Kate out of the carriage, but in the process, he is shot. When the carriage stops, he realizes that the same brutes are now harassing 2 young women stranded on the road.
Emma St. James and her maid are fleeing her vicious step-brother and were on their way to Portsmouth when their carriage overturns. Thinking their rescue is imminent, Emma is aghast to realize that these are not gentlemen who have stopped. Though wounded, Dare attacks the men and Emma, her maid and Dare escape into the woods and finally to an inn. Emma tends to the wounded Dare while he tries to puzzle out who attacked him. Emma reveals why she was running away and Dare finds himself drawn to the fiesty and brave Emma.
The storyline was good and the writing well-done, but I didn't quite believe the instant connection between Emma and Dare. Perhaps if more time had passed than just a few days, their attraction would not have felt so forced.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Dare is a very protective man, “the *******d!” Dare slammed down his cup. “I will take care of him. No need to go to America.” There are times Dare only has one thought in his mind, “don’t care.” He divested himself of his waistcoat and cravat. “May I help with the buttons?” I liked this book, I loved Dare.
On the cusp of her maturity, Emma St. James faces a problem. Namely her stepbrother who offers her two equally untenable choices: marry him or sign over her inheritance to him. Ugh! If she doesn't, her stepbrother will have her declared insane and committed to an asylum. Emma decides to take the third option, arrange a marriage with the American grandson of an earl. All she has to do is get to Portsmouth, which considering it's January is a bit of a problem.
Privateer, Captain Robert Ashton, the Earl of Darington, also known as "Dare" has just scored the prize of his life. Enough treasure to fully restore his plundered family wealth. Now that that hurdle has been overcome, he just needs to find an appropriate wife. Unfortunately, his reputation as the "Pirate Earl" means that protective mamas won't let their daughters marry him. Worse, it seems that someone is out to get him. First, kidnapping his sister. And then shooting him.
Thankfully, he runs into a stranded Emma who capably nurses him back to health. And he finds that he's not able to resist her. He wants Emma to be his wife. Too bad she's already made other arrangements.
I waffled for a long time on what to give this story. And this is one of those times where I wish the half star system existed on places like Amazon and Goodreads. But I liked the premise of this story, for the most part. I liked the action and the chase of our leads having to outrun both Emma's family and Dare's pursuers. I liked the characters sometimes.
What I didn't like was that this book seemed massively miscategorized and mislabeled. I expected to get a rip-roaring pirate/privateer romance a la Rebecca Brandewyne or Johanna Lindsay. The blurb seemed to imply that. The listed categories implied that. What I got was an inspirational Christian romance complete with Bible verses dropped into the middle of the prose wholesale without any seeming rhyme or reason. It was jarring.
Now I don't mind a good inspirational romance, if I know that's what I'm signing up for. Heck, I used to work as an editor for a Christian publishing house back in the day, and I still edit Christian romance regularly. But even the use of the Bible verses wasn't handled well. It was a fourth wall break. Additionally, many of the "steamy" scenes were too steamy for most of the Inspirational Christian Romance audience. It was incongruous.
I also didn't like the historical inaccuracies. I wish authors or more likely Editors would use sites like etymology online or Google's ngram viewer. Take the word "pants' for instance. It didn't enter the English language until around 1840. Short pants (meaning underwear) came later -- around 1860. Panties (as a derogatory for men's underwear) entered shortly after Pants did. I don't want read about "short pants" in Regencies. If it's one thing I've learned from being an editor don't mess up the following in historicals: food, clothing, where/how people use the bathroom, modes of address, and military/naval terminology. The author did all of that.
I also had trouble reading a lot of this because I couldn't connect with the characters and I found them boring. That and at about the 15% mark I started counting the Deus ex Machinas -- aka the coincidences. There's a lot. Enough that I noticed them and started to get annoyed at them by the 29% mark.
But I didn't hate this story. I probably would have rated it higher had it been categorized correctly. But as it stands I can only give this:
Captain Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington, has returned home at last. He has finally made his fortune and is ready to settle down. All Dare needs to do is find a bride which will be a challenge with all the rumors circulating about his being a pirate. Dare is on his way to a function with his sister, Kate, and his friend, Lord Wynbrook, when something most unexpected happens. His sister is abducted right in front of his eyes. Dare will not stand for it and rushes headlong into the situation without a care for his own well-being.
Emma St. James runs away from home when she learns that her stepbrother and stepmother are planning to have her committed to an asylum... all just to steal her inheritance. Emma plans to go to America and has even arranged a marriage with the aid of a friend. Emma seems to be going accordingly until her carriage overturns and Emma's driver leaves her and her maid all alone on the side of the road. Things only escalate from there when another carriage arrives full of criminals. Luckily, a man comes to her rescue and Emma is saved from a terrible fate. Unfortunately, he is injured, so Emma decides then and there to return the favor.
Dare and Emma hit it off well, but Emma stands by her decision to head to America when Dare is healed. Dare knows Emma is the one for him. Somehow, he must convince her to choose him. Things progress quickly between them until danger threatens. Dare sends Emma away only to realize it was a mistake. Fate causes them to cross paths again, and this time Dare is not willing to let her go. But will Emma feel the same?
I am quickly becoming a huge fan of author Amanda Forester. I recently discovered her work and am over the moon about it right now. EARL INTERRUPTED is everything... adventurous, thrilling, passion-filled, witty, you name it. I just could not put it down. Dare is not your typical hero. He is a little unsure of himself and doesn't know how to act around women, which is refreshing. Emma is just what he needs to bring him out of his comfort zone. Their story is charming!
I really enjoyed Earl Interrupted. This was my first read of Forester's but definitely will not be my last.
Emma St. James is living with her stepmother after the death of her father. Her father wrote in his will that Emma would inherit the family home when she comes of age. As she prepares to come of age and come into her inheritance, her greedy stepmother and stepbrother are coming up with plans to try and take it from her. Emma decides to head to America to marry for convenience to escape her home. As she is on her way with her maid, her carriage breaks down and they are almost kidnapped. Her life is saved by a wounded man who that bad guys had in their carriage. Emma discovers the wounded man has been shot. She has medical skills and she treats the man who saved her life. As Emma begins to talk with the wounded hero, she learns he is Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington, better known at the Pirate Earl.
Robert is a privateer that has earned the reputation as the Pirate Earl. In all actuality he was just trying to restore the wealth to his estate and to him that had been stolen from him. Robert saved his twin sister from being kidnapped and was shot in the process. As he is in the carriage with the kidnappers they came upon Emma and her maid. Robert is immediately captivated with Emma which says a lot because he is usually uncomfortable around ladies. Robert wants to propose to her until he learns she has a betrothed in the states. When the kidnappers and Emma's stepbrother find Robert and Emma, they flee to Robert's childhood home. The more time Robert and Emma spend together the more they like each other. When Robert learns the identity of the man who killed his father, he vows to get revenge. He leaves Emma to seek this revenge. Soon he discovers Emma's life is in danger but rescuing her might mean losing the vengeance he seeks. He has to decide which is more important to him.
The book is well written and the characters develop nicely as the book is read.
Captain Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington, knows finding a bride in London will not be easy—not since he has been notoriously dubbed as the "Pirate Earl". What he didn't expect was to get abducted, shot and to have his escape go horribly awry when an innocent lady gets caught in the crossfire. Amateur physician Emma St. James is on her way to America to meet her betrothed when she is rescued by an injured gentleman. Despite her shock after discovering he is the Pirate Earl, Emma is escaping her wicked stepmother & step brother who want her inheritance. This is the second book of the series & time wise runs parallel to Kate’s story, it could definitely be read as a stand alone, but these two books are so good that I’d read them in order, I started this book & was fascinated by Kate so went & read her story first – I do have a thing about reading a series in order though. The characters are well portrayed, I loved Dare who is so at home on a ship but awkward & gauche in society or around young women. The pace was good & there was adventure, a mystery to solve as well as two people falling in love
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Captain Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington, the 'Pirate Earl' needs a bride. His sister abducted and he is badly injured in the rescue attempt. In his escape attempt he manages to save Emma and her maid from attacking thieves and she returns the favor by nursing him and helping him elude the ones that kidnapped and injured him. Emma St. James trained by her father to be his assistant is fleeing a forced marriage to her step brother, so that he and her stepmother can take her inheritance, when she is rescued by an injured gentleman. Even knowing he is the Pirate Earl, Emma feels strongly drawn to him. Darington rescues her again when while escaping her stepbrother, she again winds up in danger. Desperate to capture the traitor who murdered his father he keeps her with him and the pair is captured. By their wits they manage to survive and escape to eventually marry, outwitting her step family. Colorful and fast moving with romance and Intrigue. I requested and received a copy from Netgalley to peruse to my delight.
I so love a pirate story and this was a PHENOMENAL one! I loved Robert Ashton Earl of Darington and Emma St.James their story is one non-stop action packed adventure. Emma was by no means a society belle she’d been isolated and was quite the innocent, but that didn’t mean that she was immune to Dare. Emma’s life has taken a downwards spiral after her father’s death he has left all his fortune to her and a small amount to her stepmother, whose not happy about that and plans to force her to marry her evil stepbrother. Emma decides to escape, on her journey her carriage is overturned while fleeing from her family. Dare has been shot and captured by the men he rescued his sister from and his captors come across Emma and there starts a journey of adventure, survival and love!
This was another great read full of surprises, adventure villains and breathtaking twists a must read!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest unbiased opinion.
This is the first time I have read a book by Amanda Forester and I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I will definitely be checking out more books by this author. The author caught my interest from the first chapter and held it through the epilogue. I liked the main characters of Emma and Dare along with the added intrigue of who was trying to cause Dare harm. This story is a great combination of romance, some mystery, regency history, with a little bit of Christian belief and the Bible thrown in. That seems like an odd combination but it works well. I do not like to retell a story that I have read or even give a synopsis of it as I feel that ruins it for others so my reviews are usually very brief. I would recommend this book and I do appreciate the opportunity to have read this book before release courtesy of NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
