I picked this book because I absolutely loved what turned out to be the first book in this series. Caught Up In Raine was a terrific younger man/older woman romance, and if you like that trope I recommend it highly.

Although that book was Jillian and Raine’s story, the author decided to continue to follow the women in Jill’s family after Jill found her HEA. Shelter My Heart is her niece Jenny’s story, and the third book in the series will hopefully answer all the questions about whatever happened between Jenny’s mother Kitty (Jill’s sister) and family friend John Henshaw. We’ll see in a couple of weeks, as I’m scheduled to review that book, Surrender My Heart: A Second Chance Romance, in a couple of weeks.

But Shelter My Heart is Jenny and Devon’s story, and it’s a doozy.

As this story begins, Jenny is trying to rush all the way across the country to be there for Jillian when she has her baby. And things keep getting in her way. Not just the fight she has with her fiance on her way out the door, but even her airline connections are against her.

Jillian’s been rushed to the hospital, and Jenny is stuck in the middle of nowhere because her incoming flight and her outbound flight missed each other. It happens. But there are no coach seats on any of the remaining flights outbound, and tomorrow might be too late. Jillian’s is a high-risk pregnancy, and there are complications. Jenny needs to be there.

A knight in bespoke suit armor comes to her rescue, paying for her first-class ticket home. And, as it turns out, the seat right beside him. And that’s where our story really begins, with Devon Soames and Jenny Lynch on a plane together, discovering that they each have the ability to take the other one out of themselves, in spite of everything that is going wrong in their lives.

Jenny’s problems, in spite of the current scare over Jillian and her baby, are mostly either of her own making or completely beyond her control. She knows her engagement should be over, she’s just having a difficult time formalizing the ending, both to her family and to the douchebag in question.

She’s also lived through a lot of death. Four people close to her have died in the past few years, one every other year. And even though none of those deaths are remotely her fault, the events that surround the first one have made her feel cosmically responsible for the others.

Devon, on the other hand, is pretty much in the middle of a crap sandwich that isn’t his fault. But that white-knight syndrome of his won’t let him do anything but sacrifice himself and all he has in the hope of making things better for his sister and his invalid mother, if not for himself.

Jenny has the feeling that death is following her around. Devon, on the other hand, is very definitely dying. He survived cancer, but the chemotherapy he needed did a permanent number on his kidneys, and they’re failing fast. He needs a transplant to survive.

The problem is that pretending that he is completely healthy is absolutely required to keep his repulsive half-brother from taking over his late father’s company. And taking over that company is the only way to provide enough money to give his mother the care that she will need for the rest of her life.

Devon feels as if he has no future. And he might not. But meeting Jenny makes him dream about happy endings again – no matter how much he tries to convince himself that they are not for him.

Until they very nearly aren’t. The end. Almost.

Escape Rating B+: This is the kind of melodramatic, soap-opera-ish, angsty romance that you just want to eat up with a spoon. And I very nearly did – I finished in a day. As crazy as some of the situations are, there is a lot of heart in this story and I just could not stop reading until the end.

This is a story where pretty much everything piles on. There are so many points where it is angsty well past the point of melodrama, because just so much happens, and it is all a bit over the top.

And most of it happens to poor Devon.

Jenny did have a tragedy in her past, but it looms bigger in her memory than she is actually responsible for. And while her about-to-be-ex-fiance is a douche, but there’s absolutely nothing stopping Jenny from kicking him to the curb, with or without Devon in the mix.

Devon, on the other hand, seems to have drawn most of the rotten cards out of the deck. He is rich, and that’s the one thing that falls mostly right for him, except his wealth is threatened and may even be temporary.

Devon’s Dad was a real, honest-to-goodness (or make that honest-to-badness) douchecanoe of epic proportions, and it’s those proportions that Devon is dealing with, in addition to caring for his invalid mother, imminent kidney failure, and staving off a corporate takeover.

When Devon, who is not yet 25, was undergoing cancer treatment, douchecanoe daddy changed his will to leave the family corporation to Devon if and only if Devon was pronounced healthy and able to provide an heir to the family on his 25th birthday. If he dies, can’t pass a physical or doesn’t have a sperm count (Devon had testicular cancer, so this is more relevant than it seems), the company will go to his half-brother, who is an even bigger asshat than dear old dad. Which is saying something since said half-brother is the product of daddy’s adulterous affair, not a previous or subsequent marriage.

And oh by the way, this “boys club” arrangement completely disregards the existence of Devon’s twin sister, who is an absolute shark as far as executive material is concerned. She is a better CEO for the company than either Devon or the bastard, a fact which Devon fully acknowledges but that dear old dad refused to admit on account of her gender. Like I said, Daddy was a douche.

There also turns out to be enough corporate skulduggery going on to fill an entire season of a soap opera like Dallas or Dynasty, but it does mostly take a back seat to the romance between Jenny and Devon – even though he refuses to open up about all the shit that’s going down in his life until generally the last possible moments. Over and over again.

In the end, it’s the love story that carries this tale. The reader is caught up in the two of them, as they fall in love, and its the real deal, in spite of how brief a time they’ve known each other and all the crap that they are forced to wade through. You want them to find their HEA, even though Devon is frequently too boneheaded to let Jenny in.

His sister Lettie blames that on a combination of white-knight syndrome and testosterone poisoning, with an emphasis on the testosterone poisoning. She is often the person pushing them together, and definitely the one pushing Devon to reveal all before it’s too late.

Lettie really deserves her own happy ending. She’s earned it. And I hope the series extends long enough for her to get one. But wrap Shelter My Love and it’s story up in a very pretty, neatly tied bow. In spite of the long arm of coincidence, and the octopus tentacles of family greed and corporate shenanigans, this one is like dark chocolate, yummy and gooey with just that touch of bitter to make the sweet really pop!

Readers’ Comments
‘Romance is not so much my thing, but this was pretty good. The characters are flawed so they are interesting to follow. Also there’s a plot there that adds very much to this novel. Well-written and satisfying.’ Male reader, aged 61
‘You can’t beat a bit of romance, particularly when the author knows what she’s doing.’ Female reader, aged 34
‘Made me feel all warm and fuzzy.’ Female reader, aged 38
‘The thriller element to this romance is very good and could even be developed. I liked the premise, and the two central characters work well together. Pacey where it needs to be, romantic too, but not sickeningly so. Yes, all in all, I was pleasantly surprised.’ Male reader, aged 49

To Sum It Up:
‘A very enjoyable romantic tale populated with well-developed characters. A FINALIST and highly recommended.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

A very moving tale of two people - Devon (a young CEO) and Jenny (who makes an appearance in the first book, Jillian’s niece). After reading the story of Raine and Jillian in Caught Up in Raine, first book in the series Caught Up in Love by L.G. O'Connor, it was a given I wanted to read the second book in the series Shelter My Heart.

The story of Devon and Jenny was an emotional rollercoaster along with elements of suspense and drama. Devon is an artist, who loves to paint, but is forced to take over as the CEO of the family business to ensure his sister and mother are taken care of.

Devon’s mother is ailing and the cost of her care is what made Devon give up his dreams and take over as the CEO. Now, Jenny is in a relationship, albeit a pathetic one but doesn’t realize it until she meets Devon.

The way they meet is cool and their segue into the relationship is fairly seamless. However, things aren’t that simple, since Devon is ailing and his days are numbered unless something changes. When these two young souls meet, they have very little going in their favour but is their love strong enough to beat the odds? Will there be a ray of hope in Devon’s life? And as for the element of suspense and drama, it has a lot to do with greed and manipulation by vested interests to seize power - will Devon be able to stop all that and figure out who’s the culprit?

Read Shelter my Heart to know the answers and participate in the journey of Jenny and Devon, while getting a glimpse into the life of Raine and Jillian yet again!

"Love Gives All"

This is a very moving story about how much love can be given and received. Young Devon is ailing and is about to become CEO of the company he inherited from his father. As long as he's healthy, he will be voted in by the board of directors. One day, he helps Jenny, an engaged young woman, get her airline seat upgraded in order to hurry home to New Jersey as her aunt is about to deliver her first child. She's very thankful to Devon and so he eventually asks her for a favor ... he needs now her help to convince the board that he is healthy for his CEO position. This novel is a heartfelt romance, plus deception, greed, and manipulation. It quickly turns into cataclysmic events for both Devon and Jenny. An exceptional novel, thought provoking, excellently written, and totally absorbing. Enjoy the events told in first person by Jenny and Devon. Very highly recommend.

Love & Corporate Family Espionage

Corporate espionage, family politics worthy of Agatha Christie, and a romance complete with a diabolical twin sister (only in the good sense) behind the scenes - this story has it all! There are cameos from the characters in the previous book and short stories, and plenty of hints for the novel following this one.

Sweet and I’m glad I bought them!

Shelter My Heart

This story deserves all of the five stars that I gave it. While it is part of a series, this standalone book has it all. Mystery, love, loss, rediscovery, murder, to name only a few of the elements in the storyline. The story really flows, with the character development a major element in the development of the storyline.
Jenny meets Devon under special circumstances, as she is trying to get home for a family emergency. Devon helps her and so it began. I was entranced by the way the drama built up with some surprises along the way. Read it and you will see.

Loved the romance and suspense

I really loved reading Devon and Jenny’s story. I had not read the first book in the series but this book could be read by itself. Devon is a kind-hearted man getting set to take over his father’s company but medical issues could stand in his way thanks to a stipulation made before his father’s death. Jenny is a sweet girl who is stuck with a wrong guy and feels like death surrounds her. A chance meeting in an airport sets in motion a flurry of adventure. Great read!

This was a sweet romance with a likable hero and heroine that I was really rooting for. Jenny and Devon meet at an airport. She's rushing to get home to be with her aunt (Jillian from Caught Up In Raine). When she can't get a seat on the flight without paying an up-charge for First Class, Devon comes to her rescue and buys her ticket. They end up sitting together on the plane and discover they are roughly the same age and are from the same town, but they never met in school because she's middle class while he went to boarding school in England. Devon is the CEO of a private corporation but he has serious health problems. If they were discovered, because of the terms of his father's will, he would be stripped of his position and he, his twin sister and his disabled mom would lose their house, as well as their support from the company, so Devon is fighting to appear normal and healthy long enough to be confirmed as the CEO. He had planned to be an artist, but gave that up when his father died.

Devon is immediately captivated by Jenny and she is also very attracted to him. When she calls him to pay back the ticket he bought, he asks her to be his date for an important gala that his family is hosting in two weeks and they start going out with the understanding that it will all end once the gala is over with. There are some twists and turns in the plot due to an attempt to force Devon out, as well as various health issues that crop up. They both have a lot of personal and professional issues to fight through in order to get their happy ending. Even though they are relatively young, I loved that they were both pretty mature in dealing with various difficult issues. I would definitely recommend this book.

I loved this romance with its wonderful characters. Devon and Jenny met in an unusual way when he did her a favor by upgrading her ticket when she was flying home because her aunt was about to give birth to her first child. Jenny returned the favor by agreeing to be his date for his family's gala, acting like they are in a relationship. Devon is very ill but he needs to convince the board that he is healthy in order to get the CEO position. Devon needs the position so that he can care for his ailing mother whose medical costs are huge. Even though he wants to be an artist and paint, he has put his dreams aside to become CEO of the family business and take care of his mother and sister. Jenny's life was a bit of a mess at this time. She quit her job just before leaving for her "vacation" and, soon after, found out her fiance was cheating on her. When a picture of him with another woman is posted on Facebook, it's pretty obvious their engagement is over.

While this story is quite a romance, there is a lot of drama and suspense to it, too. It's amazing what some people will do to gain control of a company or for money. While Devon is trying to hide how ill he is, he also tries to figure out who is trying to take over the company and trying to kill him. His twin sister, Lettie, has a hand in figuring all that out.

Not only does this emotional, well-written story have lots of twists and turns, it has terrific characters. They were great and I just wanted to hug them.

I was happy to have received a copy of this book through Kindle Scout and highly recommend this book to romantic suspense lovers.

The story begins with a frantic Jenny, who is dealing with a ticketing agent at the airline counter when an emergency has prompted her to fly home. When Devon overhears that she can't afford the only seat left (in first class) he offers to pay her way. When she hunts him down back in New Jersey to pay him back for his kindness, the love story begins. Devon is the secretly ailing heir to multi-million-dollar company who stands to lose his inheritance to his jerk of a bastard brother if his illness is discovered. Under pressure to seem stable for the scrutizing Board of Directors, he enlists Jenny to repay his gesture by serving as his date to a critical professional function.

When Jenny discovers the forces working against Devon, she is motivated to help him during the two weeks the emergency will have her back home. She has a lot to sort out--she's left her job and is less than thrilled at the idea of returning home to face her loveless relationship with her fiance. And she is more than a little tempted by sexy, sweet Devon.

As usual, L.G. O'Connor mixes romance and suspense, placing a well-written love story against the backdrop of intriguing family drama that holds a big twist and dovetails nicely with the other books in this wonderful series!

Captivating and a Fast Read

Drawing you in from the first chapter, the characters feel real and the story twists and turns keeping you glued to the pages to see what will happen next. Steamy, yet sweet, with enough heartache, loyalty, betrayal, love and evil to mix things up and keep you guessing. A quick read that will have you yearning to read all the other books in the series.

The Two Sentence Description: Jenny is summoned home to New Jersey for a family emergency, and it’s a good thing she was—she needs space from the fiancé back in San Francisco who she’s just lukewarm about. A chance encounter with Devon, a millionaire businessman who does Jenny a kindness, spurs her to help him keep his business safe from forces trying to take his company—all she has to do is pretend to be his girlfriend for two weeks.

Series? Standalone in a Serial Universe

What Makes it Stand Out: This book serves up surprise after surprise on top of the fake romance that is introduced at the beginning, showing the reader that there is much more at stake than was originally believed. Early on, it seems like a relationship of convenience—one in which Jenny is enlisted merely to prove to Devon’s Board of Directors that he is leading a normal life of stability. Yet, as the real story unfolds, there are a number of heart-pounding moments.

What You’ll Love About It: “Shelter My Heart” shows characters who act out of love for one another without fail, even before fully understanding, let alone admitting, their feelings for one another. It avoids the common trap of rash, selfish characters who work themselves into dilemmas of their own creation. The beauty of this book is Jenny’s and Devon’s respective maneuvering to each work the other out of sticky situations.

Truisms, Complexities, and Other Themes: As mentioned in my review of “Caught up in Raine”, core themes seen within all of L.G. O’Connor’s “Caught Up in Love” series seem to be settling vs. living your best life, sacrificing for others, and female self-empowerment. “Shelter My Heart” adds on themes that relate to money—Jenny is wary of Devon’s rich lifestyle, but Devon also feels suffocated by his responsibilities. This results in an in an exploration of the true consequences of money and what really matters in life. Ostensibly, Devon has everything, but with money comes specific problems. Skillfully woven in are universal problems—specifically, an illness—that doesn’t discriminate based on wealth.

The Standout Side Character: Devon’s twin sister is a great asset to the book, from both a plot and a character perspective. In an ironic twist of fate, she never stood to inherit the company Devon is trying to save because it was willed to him, the eldest male heir. The interplay between she (the shrewd businesswoman and the real force to be reckoned with) and Devon (the reluctant heir who wishes he were doing something else with his life) is brilliant. She is arguably, the cleverest and definitely the most dynamic character in the book, a powerhouse who is a lot of fun to read.

Our Prediction: This book just released to a ton of great reviews, and the next book in the series, “Surrender My Heart” is coming soon. The first book in the series, “Caught Up in Raine”, won an IPPY. We predict that O’Connor will become more recognized for her uncommon talent for writing vivid standalones in universes that feel connected and cohesive without diverting from the critical path of each individual book.
