My favorite book of the NT, also the most outrageous except for Revelations. Transcendental thought mixed with gnostic hidden certainties.

Jesus tells Nicodemus unless he is baptized and believes he will be condemned. Then tells Nicodemus that is true for everyone. Darkness and condemnation for those who aren’t and for those who don’t believe appropriately, scary stuff appealing to one’s own terror of the unknown.

Jesus says ‘I and the Father are one,’ and ‘the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through me.’ Once again scary, if you don’t do it exactly right you are eternally ‘condemned’ for finite beliefs or actions.

He creates an imaginary problem (sin) and gives an imaginary solution (belief in Him and actions in the light) while promising a Comforter to come after He is dead. The Comforter is a feeling that will keep you comfortable and whole if you believe in the imaginary promises based on a threat of eternal condemnation for those who don’t follow what Jesus said to Nicodemus.

I like the Book of John because it integrates ideas with concepts and makes them abstract and ties them into other concepts through the mediation of an interpretation.

Our Truths are obtained by mythos, logos, and pathos, that is story, reason and feeling. John claims Jesus is logos while he has Him telling stories and threatening condemnation as a form of terror unless strict obedience is followed to believing in Him while incoherently claiming the unreasonable. Terror is a feeling not a thing and a promise that involves a threat of eternal condemnation for finite actions is never justified.

I was led to rereading this Gospel since it was featured prominently in the Fornari book ‘Dionysus, Christ, and the Death of God, Volume 2: Christianity and Modernity’, and I just started reading Origen’s Life and his works and that too prominently features the Book of John, and that led me to rereading my favorite book in the NT.

What a glorious book this is—with the Truth and the Light shining from every page. <3 Every time I see something new...

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness.” (1:1-5)
“That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (1:9-14)
“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” (1:17 )
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.” (3:16-21)
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” (3:30)
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (3:36)
“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” (4:23-2)
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” (5:24)
“And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.” (5:40)
“How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?” (5:44)
“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (6:35)
“Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” (7:24)
“Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” (8:5, 7, 11)
“I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (8:12
“And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.” (8:29)
“If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (8:31-32)
“If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.” (8:42, 44-47, 55)
“One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.” (9:25)
“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.” (10:10-11, 28-29)
“When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.” (11:4)
“Sir, we would see Jesus.” (12:21)
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. Father, glorify thy name.” (12:24-28)
“Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” (12:31-32)
“He that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.” (12:35)
“Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.” (12:42-43)
“I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.” (12:46)
“For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.” (12:49-50)
“If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.” (13:14-15‬)
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (13:34-35‬)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (14:6)
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (‭14:15‬)
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.” (14:16-19)
“If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.” (‭14:23-24)
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (‭14:27)
“These things I command you, that ye love one another. If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me. If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin. He that hateth me hateth my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” (15:17-26)
“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.” (16:8-11‬)
“Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (‭16:32-33‬)
“I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.” (‭‭17:9, 14-18)
“Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?” (18:1)
“Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above:” (‭19:10-11)
“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” (‭20:31)

To some degree how you approach a book is going to influence your opinion of said book. Those who come to the book of John open to its truth, the Truth, they will find it quite satisfying. This is not to say that some who come with a closed mind do not end up finding the truth, but it is much easier if you come saying, for example, "God, if there be any God, reveal yourself to me through this Gospel and I will accept what you have for me." This person will soon find a new life. If not the first time, read it through again with the same heart prayer, "Show me the truth and I will accept it." The songwriter wrote, "Though millions have come, there's still room for one, there's room at the cross for you."

This review encompasses all three books of John. My personal favorite is 1 John, because not only is this the longest book, but I feel gives a clear message to all readers as the second and third book testified as letters to churches repeating the message in the first. The entire message is to love one another, and how it's important to love our fellow brothers and sisters, because it represents Christ. Overall, these books are splendid for studying on how important it is to represent Christ's commandments in order for not only your salvation, but to show others.

I Am statements, Seven Signs, and familiar though still powerful and mysterious pericopes - such as the Vine Discourse leading into the High Priestly Prayer, which then immediately segues into the Crucifixion account. Beautiful and sorrowful.

A fantastic account of Christ that truly emphasises His Divinity and the need to believe in, and follow, Christ.
