I am a primary school teacher living in Cardiff, Wales, UK. I live in a tiny house full of books, animals, rocks and fossils.

I love travelling by myself because you get to meet more local people that way. My favourite trips so far have been ice fishing in the arctic circle, the Canadian Rockies in winter and camping with my sister in Devon (Every bit as adventurous!)

I have been writing stories since I was a kid but have only recently taken the plunge into publishing. I've also recently started a science fiction review site http://www.starshipsandaliens.com which is nearly as much fun as writing.

The everyday story of space folks continues with the Heron acting as the diplomatic embassy while they try to get to know the Carrearranians.
The story was progressing quite nicely until about a third of the way through the book and the Solarans suddenly turned up and caused chaos, this was the real start of an interesting story.

The strength of the book is the interactions between the different characters. In each new book there are a few new additions and while others take more of a back seat. Silvie is still quite prominent, but it’s a pity the author seems to have fallen out with Shion, as she was one of my favourites.

MacDonald continues to astound me by writing good fiction without much of a plot.

This series has become a fascinating study in I guess what we could call anthopology, by presenting alien, almost-human cultures and the humans' reactions to it. It is well thought out (at least the social aspects of it), and I continue to be interested in it, even though there is little or no rising action and certainly no hair-raising climax.

MacDonald's trademark is the variety of human or almost-human cultures that somehow spawned from a single source thousands of years ago. As such, these aliens are genetically human (or almost human), not merely humanoid, like so many science fiction stories where the aliens aren't supposed to be humans but sure seem to be. Her universe is much better thought out than that.

The human characters in the novel continue to be interesting. (If they weren't, the cultural survey of the alien planets wouldn't be interesting enough.) What makes this more interesting is the interaction of several almost-human cultures, while the humans are watching and enabling. Hard to say much more without spoilers, but I can certainly say that there are many laugh-out-loud situations where different cultural expectations lead to humorous conflict.

I'm not sure I'm going to go back and read this again and again--the characters are maybe not that good--but it was certainly entertaining and almost impossible to put down. Hence the 4 star rating.

Yet another great read

I have enjoyed reading the least book of what is a great series of books. Captain Alex von Strada and the Fourth Fleet Irregulars, once again have to deal with a new planet and its people. As expected things go wrong due to other people's wish to rush forward too quickly. Alex has to use both of his hats, as Captain and Ambassador to sort out the issues. Looking forward to the next book.

What a disappointment! After entertaining and exciting books for the first five of this series, this one was a clunker.

There were still funny lines and funny situations and some action, but most of it was interacting personalities and how they were affected by the unique culture the protagonist, Alex von Strada, created on his frigate, Heron.

People who enjoy character development will love it, but there wasn't enough action for me.

Loved it!

I do enjoy this series. So glad another book came out. I hope there will be many more. Just don't take too long to get them out. I'm 70 now and want to learn much more about these characters and their universe. I hope we can look forward to many more adventures for Alex and his crew. Really just a very good job.

Little action but still a quality read.

Little action but a quality read. Good read as a filler piece and for the background it provides. Disappointed how light on action it really was.

Lovely science fiction

I don't know what it is about the fourth fleet but it just goes to shows you don't need lasers and missiles to make a fantastic book

LOVE THIS SERIES

It was so good to get a chance to read up on the Fourth Fleet Irregulars! I had kind of lost track of them after Book 4 and was delighted to stumble on Carrearranis. Dig in folks 😄.
