Dikeledi is a setswana novel that relates of the reality and plight of child headed households in Black communities. Set in Galishewe Kimberly. 14 year old Dikeledi, after the passing of both her parents , is tasked to parent her siblings Oratile, and Modisa, who are at creche and primary school respectively.
Will the children survive against vultures , predators, pedophiles and crooks amongst family and community. Will the assistance of the shopkeeper, ntate Shuping and neighbor Ma Selepe be sustainable and sufficient to see them through?
A beautiful piece of creative writing. As a reader I found myself alongside Dikeledi, felt her apprehension, sadness, hope, and gratefulness. Her commitment , courage, respect and love were palpable.
My favorite character was Maselepe, strong effective and instrumental in many ways. That larger than life character who simply takes over.
A book that reiterates the message that rape is an act of power, and that it's perpetrators are mainly known to their victims.
Sabata Mokae writes in English and setwana. His other setwana books are titled "Ha Ke Modisa"( 2012) , and it's sequel "Moletlo Wa Manou (2018)
Be a language activist. Join in reclaiming and repatriating our languages. Read setswana, Sesotho, Isizulu, isixhosa or any of our Black indeginous languages. Read you.
