Note: very short prequel novella (Leading into Feast: Harvest of Dreams)
Lily and Ash were Darklings that preyed upon dreams of humans, absorbing their energy as if it was food to survive. Though it was forbidden to prey upon any human under the age of 12, they were drawn to an eight-year-old boy and disguised themselves as fairies when they visited him. But they found themselves at odds, when Lily kept wanting to return to the boy while Ash found an intriguing dream mystery unfolding in the heads of several older women. Which meant Ash wasn’t by her side, when Lily found herself in distress.
This is a beautifully dark, gothic fantasy with strange creatures with touches of fairies and vampires, with a lavish old-fashioned Victorian setting. I knocked it down one point since I didn’t really sympathize with any of the characters (Lily seemed selfish and Ash seemed rather dismissive), though I still am tempted to pick up the series it introduces, just to see if maybe Ash will grow heart as a character over a longer story.
