Six years of working for Project Zed showed MSgt Cutler Morrison all he thought he needed to know about the shifter world. He’d pledged his life to fight back the evil savagery of the wild creatures threatening to kill all humankind… until he realized that the heroes he was fighting with weren’t much in the way of heroes and the ones they were fighting against didn’t seem so hellbent on world domination, after all. Disillusioned, a fateful plane crash brought him down in the middle of shifter territory, and there he saw another side to the beasts he thought were evil.
On Cutler’s first mission with the shifters, they take down one of the weaponized creatures the project imprisoned and bring him to safety. He’s always had an odd connection to Subject Z-620. Cutler’s like a moth to the monster’s flame.
As more secrets about Project Zed come to light, they both have to come to terms with who they were, what they’ve done, and where the road leads…
International bestselling MM romance author Kelex lives in Hampton Roads, Virginia with her twenty-something slacker kidult and two senior grandpups.
When not being a pain in her daughter’s ass or writing under various pen names, she also loves to create stained glass, paint, crochet, bake gorgeous breads, and host game night with all her kiddos, be they born or adopted.
I loved Savage by Kelex. This is the second book in the Project Zeb series which is a spinoff of the Bear Mountain series. You don’t have to read the Bear Mountain series to read the Project Zeb series. Project Zeb series is set in the Bear Mountain world but mostly focuses on the Indian land owned by Sebastian that is next to Bear Mountain.
We met Sebastian and his mate, Cal, from the first book in the series, Beast. We get to see more of their relationship in the second book also, with Cal having nightmares and finally giving into going and seeing a therapist. We are also introduced to a new character Dario, who is a fire elemental. He didn’t realize that he was anything but human until he was attacked and his new powers protected him. Since then he has been compelled to travel to Bear Mountain. He’s taken in by Sebastian who is going to help him with his powers since he’s an elemental also.
This book mostly focuses on Staff Sargent Culter Morrison and Subject Z-620, otherwise known as Cyprian. Culter was recruited by Colonel Lore to help with Project Zeb. While moving up through the various jobs that he was given over the six years he was there, he had always had a connection and fascination to Subject Z-620 and wanted to help free him. But it wasn’t until he went down in a plane crash over Bear Mountain that he realized that shifters weren’t the monsters he was lead to believe. As a result, he has joined the team of shifters who have made it their mission to bring down Project Zeb one beast at a time and help put them back together again.
During Cutler’s first mission with the shifters, they bring down one of the weaponized creatures the project had imprisoned and brought him to safety. Using a serum that their two shifter healers have perfected to help control and calm all of the shifter voices fighting for control, they are able to help Subject Z-620 reclaim his life and reunite him with Culter. Culter has always felt a connection to Cyprian (Z-620), but he doesn’t know why but with Deacon’s help, he’s able to unlock some of the memories that were hidden from him. Lots of twist with Culter that I didn’t see coming.
I really enjoyed the chemistry between Cyprian and Culter and Sebastian and Cal. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book in the series. The author has hinted that it might be about Dario and his mate Arnaud and I can’t wait to read it.
***The ARC was provided by Twisted E Publishing. My review is an honest opinion of the book ***
That's all I can think after finishing this story. You definitely want to read the first book in this series, Beast, as this one picks up from that. Not only do we get Cutler's story, we get more with Sam and Cal, plenty of appearances from Declan, Bull, Killian and Finn, much more insight to Project Zed and the horrible people behind it, as well as new characters and a whole new plot with Elementals.
The storytelling in this is wonderful, it's probably my favorite thing this author has done, as there is so much overlapping and things building to what I expect will be a big finale between the shifters and the Project Zed men.
I can't wait to get the next story and also more of Bear Mountain. Plenty of questions with the elementals, will Gator and Dario get mates (well, we know 1 for Dario, so is his story next?), what will happen more with Cutler and Cyprian, is Bull's father still around? SO MANY QUESTIONS. Highly, highly recommend this series especially if you've already been reading Bear Mountain.
Kelex continued with same writing style as the first book. The story was dependent upon that book plus the Bear Mountain series. Some of the story was told through flashbacks, which were very well done. There was a surprising twist at the end. The undying steadfast love between Cutler and Cyprian was awesome. There were several plot arcs created, ready for the next installment.
This is not a stand alone as you'll be lost if you haven't at least read Project Zed: Beast, but better if you have read Bear Mountain. Totally loved the pairing of Cutter & Cyprian. So many question and yet so many new paths to explore.
Savage by Kelex is the second book in the Project Zed series. This series has to be read in order. There is tons we learn about the characters from the first book that flows over into this book, and new material added. Tons of stuff, though Kelex made it pretty easy to follow. The first pages of this book we get little reminders of what you might have missed and who's who that type of thing. Still it is far better if you have actually read the first book. This story has a ton going for it. I am going to stick to the main love story for this review. However there is tons going on besides what I will mention. Cutler is a staff sergeant. He gets to see how the paranormals are being experimented on, and caged up. It makes him sick. He really wants to help free them. He is told the shifters are dangerous but he feels deep down they are misunderstood and need to be free. He begins to work on freeing those captive and stopping project Zed. He took many risks to his own life to help. Cutler is caring, smart, and crafty. I liked him a lot. At first he is kinda stuffy but once we really get to know him, he is a man you want on your side in a fight. He would be your best friend till the end. Z-620 or Cyprian he had been captured, controlled, and caged. He wants revenge. He has been tested on, given pain, did I mention caged. Well with all that, he is still a fighter. He is strong. His psychological scars are there but he tries very hard not to let them control him. I really admired this character he has come very far in a short period of time, and he has come out the other side okay. Over all this is a great second addition to this already amazing series. There is a ton politically and emotionally going on. I feel all of those who escaped are now ready to band together and fight, they are laying a great foundation for that. Warning: there is graphic violence in this book. I found it added to the emotional connection I had to this story. Brutal as it is, it made these men the men they are today. When you want action, adventure, and lots of emotional angst this is the book to pick up.
5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow- Away-book like ‘Jesse's Smile' or ‚Joey’ from Angelique Jurd, ‘Save the at he kids' series from EM Leya, ‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or 'Liberty' from Seth King), it's like an A+
4* - very good and will be often reread and is a WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises (like most of Andrew Grey’s books) it's like an A
3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few times a year (most romances where you can enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in hospitals). I can recommend them definitively! It's like an B+
3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader, maybe 2-3 times a year. It’s like a B
2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time- reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but it was ok). It's like a C-, D
1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole line, dismissed, repeat the class
There was nothing new that wasn't already told through the two main characters of the previous book. Same ol' same ol', with new characters and a pinch of mystery, which wasn't as compelling as the author meant it to be.
Another excellent addition to this series and the one connected to it. I so enjoy meeting the Beasts and watching them heal and find their mates. The evil that was done to them by Fore, hopefully will be revenged soon. Love Curtis and Cyprian together. Their chemistry is off the charts as is their devotion to each other. Love visiting with characters from past books. Looking forward to Dario, Arnaud and whoever their mate may be, soon.
