Jude Gallagher thought she was crazy. It all started when the boy next door made her hear music—inside her head. All the time. It was torture. She didn’t think things could get worse. But then one hot summer, her best friend Kane O’Reilly decides to tell her how he really feels about her. Music inside her head? That’s nothing compared what happens next. Things only turn stranger when she and her lab partner Frankie Melmack begin a project to prove the existence of the Vatra u Krvi—a race of people tied to the mythical Phoenix. Add in a neglectful mother and a magic ring, and the insanity that defines Jude’s life is pretty well complete. Heat surges across the Nevada desert, and the best and worst parts of Jude Gallagher’s life collide as myth meets reality. In the middle of the chaos, she begins to hear more than just music. And she has to wonder… Maybe... just maybe… she really is crazy after all.

Actual Rating: 4.5
Thank you Casey Hays for the opportunity to read your book. This was a fantastic read. I loved this story and it was innovative. The characters draw you into the story immediately. I really liked the relationship between Jude and Kane. It was slow burning and tender. I love these types of romances. I also loved the friendship between Jude and her friends. They are awesome. The friendship is the essence of this story as the characters make the story more believable. I can't wait to more from Casey Hays. Overall, an amazing read.
Well....to start with, this book was so wonderfully cute and i desperately need the sequel right now !!
Firebloods is a distinct new idea which was perfectly executed and is filled with a romance to die for and characters so beloved you can only wish to be a part of their group. Our main character, Jude, is so loveable and down to earth you can't help but connect with her and find comfort in her strength, even when she feels like she herself is failing. All the romances in this book are perfectly shippable and there is enough mystery to get you hooked and keep you reading. The plot was nicely paced for a starter in a series and the magic elements of this story were perfectly woven throughout. It was nice to uncover the secrets of this world alongside Jude and there was great representation of platonic relationships, with all the secondary characters being likable as well. Casey Hays also did a wonderful job of portraying both the sadness and light in the world and how everyone reacts differently to conflicts put before them.
I was instantly intrigued with the concept of this book and in reading i can see that this brand new world is only just opening open but that I am already invested in protecting its characters and cannot wait to read more. Thank you Casey Hays for giving me this chance to read your book.
Firebloods is a unique fantasy about phoenixes. I enjoyed the adventure, but what bothered me was the mind of the main character. She was constantly fixed on either dating or not dating a boy. Her group of friends were also a bit annoying at times.
To be honest... this wasn't a bad first book, but it could have been better.
(Please note: I received a review copy of this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review. A huge thanks to Casey Hays (the author) for giving me the opportunity to read this, and to the YA Buddy Readers' Corner Group on Goodreads for advertising the opportunity).
This book was absolutely beautiful and well written from the get-go. The prologue set up the story really well with the . It was a beautiful, poignant and genuine opening to the novel that I really enjoyed despite the sadder aspects of it.
The romance portion of the novel was beautifully written, and I was really voting for the main guy as Jude's love interest from the get-go; he was a super sweet character that just grew better and better the further along that you read. I was a little worried that there may end up being a love triangle but at this stage I'm happy to say that my fears seem to have been unfounded, yay! The relationships (both romantic and platonic) portrayed throughout the novel were well written and I enjoyed the diverse range of characters.
Overall, I had a lot of fun reading this novel! It was innovative and engaging and it was great to have a focus on the less-well-adapted mythological creature of the Phoenix (rather than the usual norm that is vampires and werewolves). I look forward to seeing where Casey Hays goes from here with this world she's created and can't wait to read what happens next!
* I have been asked to give a honest review... I felt sorry for Jude as she lost her father at an early age. she has known Kane all her life but doesn't find his secret out till much later... that he is a Fireblood. only it isn't over there... I would recommend reading Firebloods especially if you want to find out what happens lol 😉
I received a free copy of Firebloods by Casey Hays in exchange for an honest review.
Firebloods was a slow read. It took half the book for things to start happening, and I don’t think the action picked up for real until about 80 percent. The first half was relationship angst. Jude was incredibly wishy-washy: her eternal question was ‘Should I be with Kane or not?’ It got very tiring, and I wanted to yell at her by the end of it. Jude’s whinyness and wishy-washiness aside, once the action started happening (i.e. the mystery of the Firebloods was unfolding more, and we knew more about Jude and Kane and all) the book became much more engaging.
I think that if Jude’s relationship angst had been only the first 25 or 30 percent, it would have really improved the book and made it more enjoyable. It got to a point where I would have stopped reading had it not been a r2r. I think the ‘interludes’ every few chapters helped make the book more bearable at first: we got to know Jude’s character more, and learn about her past. It was a nice break from the main story.
Overall? I want to read the next one. That last twenty percent or so really saved the book for me, and I am curious to know what happens next. 3.5 stars.
Firebloods is a unique and beautifully crafted fantasy world! I have always loved the legend of the Phoenix Casey Hays has given us a fresh take on it that is amazing! Full of Mythology, mystery, romance and adventure this is a must read! 5 Stars All The Way!
Ok so I was given this book in exchange for an honest review :)
I'm glad I was chosen to read this book because actually it was a lot of things I normally don't read, there was fantasy and adventure and I usually avoid those because I find the, rather predictable and a little tedious to read as there doesn't seem such a strong plot. I was entirely wrong in this books case, this did have fantasy and adventure in but it also had romance and paranormal throughout and I loved every single page of it.
I enjoyed how each of the characters were gradually introduced like we were meeting them as a friend rather than the reader we weren't told about their personalities rather shown through their actions and experiences within and it made it easy as a reader to fall in love with each character and want everything to work out for them. I enjoyed how the scenes were described in detail and in the descriptions I very much was made to feel I was there experiencing it.
Rylin, well what can I say about him. Throughout the book he was a little bit odd, freaky a bit creepy really I wasn't sure if I should be liking him or hating him he was a mystery from the beginning and it made you second guess when he was in a scene.
Jude, well being that she was the main character we found out what kind of character she was by the kind of life she had to live after her father died, her mum swallowed in her grief not noticing her daughter who was struggling to find her own way through grief and keep swimming and the strength she drew from her strong friendship group I loved that it was shown through flashbacks the closeness and special scenes and not just introduced as they were best friends and that was it.
Kane, well he was sickenly sweet and very flirty towards Jude yet she was rather oblivious to his advances until she really couldn't deny it anymore.
Overall I really did enjoy reading this book, it had a great romance involved, teenage angst, strong friendships, grief, uncertainty and courage throughout. The intense scenes and situation really drew the reader in deeper and made me not want to put the book down, I can't say this was an easy read because of the information I don't think it is but that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable because all the background information seems just as important and the main. I will happily read more books from this author and hope for a sequel for this one :)
Firebloods sounded like a really good book to read; however, it took me forever to finish it. I kept getting distracted by other things or other books. On the plus side, Jude was a pretty interesting character. If there is a second book, I would probably re-read this one. Who knows? I could end up a different perspective the second time around.
This is an enjoyable, unusual and innovative story. The descendants of an engineered race live hidden in plain sight. Their fire and abilities masked by their self control, but when love enters the picture, risks are taken, problems occur and secrets are revealed. I really liked the evolution of Jude and Zane's romance, it was slow and tender but at the same time you still had the sense that something more lingered under the surface. Jude's eclectic set of friends are a great mix, each totally different and yet they meld together well. The author takes the time to form depth to the characters and you easily become invested in there lives. This story has romance, surprises, excitement and has laid down the treads of problems to come. I will look forward to reading the next in the series.
I received a free copy of the book from the author in order to review the book. This in no way effects the integrity of my review. Thanks to Casey Hays for the opportunity to read and review the book :)
Just want to state from the outset that this is a negative review, don't hate on me.
The premise of the Firebloods is great. Firebloods are magical beings linked to the Phoenix who hold immense power and are somehow linked to Jude. The idea in itself is unique and intriguing.
If only there weren't so many problems: 1. The main character 2. The Interludes 3. The pace of the book
The book's problems begin with the main character herself. At first Jude seems ok. She's a logical character who is still grieving for her dad who died mysteriously 6 years earlier. Couple of chapters in and this is where we learn that logical and clever are mutually exclusive. Jude's long-time best friend, Kane, has had a crush on Jude since forever and Jude likes Kane too. Yet the pair spend at least 6 chapters arguing about getting together! Jude becomes her own obstacle and bored me to death as she constantly gives us a rundown of her inner conflict on the topic of her relationship with Kane. She even says at one point "Funny thing, nobody had a problem with it [dating Kane] but me" which made me internally scream "JUST GET TOGETHER THEN". The plot is sidelined by the cliche best friend-becomes-lover thing and then dawdles around for a while in order to elongate the book because there is not enough action.
Don't get me wrong I liked Jude a bit but she was so dumb about being in a relationship with Kane to the point that it became stupid to continue talking about her relationship with him. Case in point: "He likes me; I like him back. It's so... surreal". No, Jude, no it's not surreal, don't you know how relationships work?!?
The second problem of the book was the interludes. Every couple of chapters the author stuck an interlude in there; once again making it seem like she's just trying to reach the word count. I partially get that they were there for backstory and that's an integral part of any character arc, but the interludes took away from what were a couple of great chapters. The chapters successfully increased tension and my intrigue and the interludes successfully broke it all down so that reading just became pointless and tedious. It ruined the flow and it's not a writing or reading format I would recommend.
Finally, the pace of the book. The book is sooooo slow. It was like trudging through mud. For pretty much 15 chapters the author is making Kane all mysterious and it's obvious he isn't human. Well, obvious to the reader but of course Jude is extremely dumb so it's not obvious to her. I'm sitting there thinking "Kane is a Fireblood, oh, how very un-surprising" and really just wishing that the book would move faster and finally make the revelation to Jude.
Not gonna lie this book was just SO SLOW I COULD NOT ENJOY IT. I like fast-paced novels or even medium-paced novels but this book was like walking up a mountain with the promise of gold at the top only to find that the gold's been stolen. Disappointing and a waste of time. Would not recommend. Not even to my worst enemy.

What a story! I was so excited for this book, but was not prepared for the amazing story I fell head first into! Deep and unique, with characters that you get an instant attachment to. Book 1 is just the appetizer for a story I can't wait for more of! This type of book is so hard to write a review for because I don't want to give anything away! Everything is given to you in such a wonderful and perfect timeline as to unfold the story just the way it should be. The characters and friendships are really the backbone of this story. Without an amazing cast, even the most wonderful story will fall flat. But this amazing story has characters that take this book to new levels! Hopefully we won't have to wait long for book 2 because I am suffering from one heck of a book hangover! I need more!
I just finished with yelling out "OH YOU C**T!!!" at my Kindle... because it ended. Didn't want it to end. Casey has done it again!!! This book was amazing. Besides a few formatting issues (I'm looking at you, KDP) I have no complaints.
This book was fantastic!! I loved it from the get go. It's one of the most unique takes on a paranormal angel story that I've read. And I loved the originality. The mysteries were so fun to figure out. And the romantic elements were so fun to experience. Casey is such a good writer overall. But she does such a good job at creating believable teenagers as well as creating believable relationships. Jude's and Kane's friendship was sooooo fun to watch develop into something more. I loved it. And all of the magical elements were so well plotted and totally magical. I can genuinely say I can't wait for the next book in this series.
I have to say the first half or so of this book personally annoyed me. It felt too drawn out and long. I am not sure if Casey was trying to lay the groundwork for the rest of the story but I wanted something more to happen. Jude was spending so much effort fighting against taking a step towards being more than friends with Kane. The next half of the book is intriguing and gets into a new paranormal idea of Firebloods. This is where your interest is grabbed tight and won't let go. I will enthusiastically be waiting for the next book.
Jude plans to have a nice relaxing summer, but fate has other plans for her. Instead, she gets to deal with the affections of her best friend, a return of a neighbor that Jude is strangely pulled to and a crazy science project that is more paranormal than science. Life has gotten to be almost too much, but little does Jude know is that this is just the beginning.
I thought that the author used a really interesting writing style with the story, having breaks between some of the chapters to give back story. The Interludes were inserted between every few chapters to help fill in the relationship between the characters. Each Interlude was a flashback to an important occurrence between Jude and another character so help create the relationship dynamic, or just a memory from Jude that helped to explain her as a person. I think this is the first time I have seen something like this used in a book before, but I did find it to be a nice tool to ease the reader into the complexities of the characters.
I found the first half of the book to be a little slow as well as pretty sad. For the most part, we see Jude dealing with the grief of her father passing, both from 5 years in the past in memories as well as her continued sorrow now in the present. Also, we deal with a lot of angst from Jude over the decision to date one of her best friends. She has strong feelings for her friend Kane but doesn't want to ruin the friendship which is very important to her, so a majority of the first half off the story is her stewing over it as well as talking about it with her other friends- until her slightly abrasive friend Frankie told her if she needed affirmation about it from others it was probably not worth it (words of wisdom, sister!).
The second half of the story was where my attention was 100% captured and I could not put the book down, right from the moment Jude woke up and her entire world was turned on its head. There were so many secrets whispered and hinted at, I had no idea how it would all go down. The author was able to create an entirely new kind of supernatural in this world based with the concept of Phoenixes, the birds that can be reborn from their own ashes. Also, the story was incredibly romantic, something I was not really expecting at all even though the synopsis hinted at it. Kane was really dreamy, I liked him and his persistence and patience as soon as I met him- but once I heard the story of the returned shoe, I loved him, regardless of Jude's feelings. Also, the friends group was great and I don't think Jude could have asked for a better group of people.
Firebloods is the first in a series and I look forward to seeing what will come next for Jude with all the truths that she had thrust at her. I can't image this being an easy journey and I am excited to continue.
I am voluntarily reviewing an advance, complimentary copy of this book.
I have loved every book that I have read by Ms. Hays and this one does not disappoint!
Jude Gallagher's father died under mysterious circumstances and her mother is basically MIA in her grief. The only thing that keeps Jude going are her friends, especially Kane. When her friend, Frankie, suggests that she and Jude do a project on the mysterious Firebloods, Jude is skeptical. Little does she know how this whole project will affect her life.
Great characters and great story with lots of unexpected twists. The idea of the Phoenix and Firebloods is an intriguing one and I plan to read more about the whole mythos. I look forward to reading the next book in the series because this one ended on a hugely unexpected note!
Firebloods gripped me after the first couple of pages, I could not put it down. The storyline is yet another prime example of a great fantasy written well. Reading this book is truly a treat. Go ahead and get the book for yourself, you will see what I mean.
When Jude Gallagher finally breaks down and starts to date one of her best friends, Kane O'Reilly, her life takes some interesting turns. Take a wild ride with Jude, Kane, Jonas, Devan, and Frankie as they relive their childhood together and experience their last summer as children ( the summer after senior year of high school) together. Can you fall in love with your best friend? Will it ruin your friendship?
When Frankie and Jude do a scholarship project based on the Phoenix the girls have to prove a race known as the Firebloods walk the earth. How can you prove the Firebloods exists while keeping the secret of someone you love? Jude is put in a horrible delima.
This is an outstanding reading with likable characters. You'll find yourself cheering for Jude and Kane.
( I received an ARC copy of this directly from the author )
My review in short, before I go into detail for those of you who don't spend time reading long reviews. ;) Magical, captivating and OMG what an ending! Slow to begin with but excellent read and I can't wait for the release of Scorch Song in 2018! Well worth reading if you like you Paranormal wit a good dose of a stunning romance.
I found Firebloods a completely captivating read. Full of magic and a romance to die for. I do have slightly mixed feelings but as a whole, I loved the book. I adored the story and I have everything crossed we will be seeing more of all those beautiful characters in the second book Scorch Song Book #2.
Let me explain my mixed feelings a little, I felt that maybe it is lacking in a bit of action, doesn't have to be kick ass... But I felt that we kept going over the same things. Like how Jude feels for kane and the will she won't she. I felt there was a lot of repeat scenes... and again this kept happening with the scenes about how she felt towards losing her father. However saying that; this is what makes the story; is the raw emotions of all these things I just stated before. It's a really difficult one to get right to put that emotion across to readers but not to make it too repetitive. I did want maybe to see a little more about the fireBloods and what this had to do with Jude earlier on in the story maybe to spice things up a little. You have to get quite away through the book before we get things happening. But it really does pick up big time and leaves you wanting more! Saying all of this tho, I still loved the story. I found it highly addictive, I kept going back to it through out the day. For me, I Just try and read at night, but with this one, I just kept going back every free minute I had desperate to find out what happens next.
Loved all the characters each one soon became a book friend and I enjoyed being apart of their world for a few days. I adored the good natured relationship between Jude, Jonas Devan & Frankie. I loved the romance side of things between Jude and Kane. Rylin gave an air of mystery, who is he, How is he connected, and we don't find that bit out until near the end of the story.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this and can not wait for Scorch Song in 2018!
Absolutely love Firebloods!!!!! Such and intense story! It's so captivating. I never got bored and was constantly trying to find the angle.
Jude has always felt a little off. A little crazy, but she has dealt with it. She is living and doing it the best she knows how. She has four best friends, two of which are guys. She has been best friends with the guys since they were very small. She has an undeniable attraction to Kane, and he with her, but she is adamant about it not going any further than friends as she does not want to ruin her friendship. Jude is working on a science project with her other friend, Frankie. The girls are looking into the existence of Firebloods. This is a race of people that have been injected with the blood of the mythical Phoenix. As the project continues and more secrets are uncovered she finds that a lot of things aren't always as they seem. One secret is uncovered but more questions keep arising.
These characters are awesome! They are normal, everyday teenagers who are always into shenanigans. They are super easy to relate to and I see a little of myself in all of them. Firebloods is a completely different story than anything I have read before. I love this spin on the mythical story of the Phoenix. This is the "keep you on the edge of your seat" type of story. The story is full of twists and turns, trust and secrets, love and lies. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL!
I was blessed with a free copy of this book, and have chosen of my own volition to share this review with you!
Wow, blown away by the story line of this tale. Summer break secrets, which are revealed prior to one girl's senior year of high school, changes the rest of her life. Firebloods, a mythical being related to the Phoenix, is the topic of a research paper the main character and one of her friends chose to delve into. Little does the main character know how much knowledge of these creatures will change her life. This whole story takes place within the first two weeks of summer break, with a few flashbacks to situate various "facts".
The characters are well developed. There are numerous twists in this plot. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series!
Jude Gallagher has been teetering on the edge of sanity for years. She was convinced in third grade that the new neighbor boy could make her hear music in her head all the time. The torture continued for four long years until the day he moved away taking the music with him, but not the memory -- or the feeling of being crazy. Now seventeen, Jude is talked in to doing a science project on Vatru u Kvri, or Firebloods -- a mythical race of winged people whom have been injected with the blood of the rare Phoenix. Her friend and science partner, Frankie, is convinced through research that they can prove the Firebloods existence. But as the summer continues, her only solid proof may be that she's crazy afterall. With a unique twist on mythical lore, Casey Hays breathes refreshing new life into the paranormal world. Written with immense descriptive detail and a mesmerizing storyline, FIREBLOODS is a suspenseful supernatural that will leave young adult fans begging for more!
When you finish the story you begin to understand that not all things are what they seem. How can one school project change a person's life? It makes you never want to do another one I can tell you that.
This story tells you how one summer with your friends can change your life for ever. Will it be a good change or bad one? My guess it will vee for the reader to decided.
I truly enjoy the flow of this story and it keeps you entranced from the beginning. I know I had a hard time putting the book down because I just had to know what was next. For a few pages I was even yelling at Kane along with Jude.
To me this is a prefect love story and I hope we will get to follow further into their story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book to read. In the world we live in, many people do not believe in the supernatural. In the world that Jude lives in, all things are possible. Mythical creatures lurk, and to find out about the legend of the phoenix, this is a really well written book and you really need to love reading about the supernatural to have a better taste of this book :-) Happy Reading, I know I enjoyed it.
i received a arc copy for a honest review and im glad i did because i love this book. love the way the author writes. love the fact it pulls you in barely slept last night and was able to finish this morning.to me its out of this world and kinda werid but most of all its beautiful well writen actually thought i was in the book
Firebloods is a fresh, fantastical YA adventure. The blood of the mythical Pheonix.... Really?! Casey Hays how do you come up with this stuff?! Seriously, I couldn't put it down. It's a young romance taken to new heights with several twists and intrigue. My two descriptive words would be suspenseful and satisfying. The author gives you a little taste, allows you to savour the flavor and then gives you a whole bite. (I don't know where that came from but it just works for me). Anywho, job well done, Casey, on a new adventure! I can't wait to see what happens next.
A sweet paranormal young-adult romance, “Firebloods” is the first in its series and involves the best of teen romance without the love triangle or insta-love, a new paranormal race, and a teen’s journey of self-discovery.
