Amelia has poured her heart and soul into her dream of becoming an actress. All her sacrifice is about to pay off when she’s offered her first leading role, but there’s one catch: it’s the lead in the lesbian romance movie Real Love. Amelia’s never so much as looked at another woman, and she can’t help but feel intimidated at the prospect of faking intimacy with a girl. Especially when she finds out who the other star is…
Heartthrob Jessica Black is known for her luscious curves, cheesy movies, and flings with actors—not for her acting talent. But the dates are all fake and sometimes she feels her entire life is just a publicity stunt. The only real relationship in her life is the one she has with Cleo—her rescued puppy. Jessica wants to create a film that will make the world a better place. But when she signs up to star in a lesbian romance movie to raise awareness for equality, she faces resistance from her publicist, her agent, and even her own family. And to top it off she seems destined to clash with her feisty, short haired, vintage suit wearing co-star Amelia. When the two decide to work out their scenes with some private rehearsals, their relationship only grows more complicated.
“The kiss was supposed to be practice, but it felt real.”
As friendship grows between them, it starts to seem like it could be something more. But with pressure from the public, and their own insecurities to work past, their relationship encounters one challenge after the next. Can Amelia and Jessica work through it all to create their own happily ever after?
*I received an ARC in exchange of an honest review.*
Wow! This was one amazing story. I loved the plot, I loved the characters (even though Justin made me roll my eyes sometimes), and I loved Cleo.
I laughed at all the funny bits, I cried with both Justin and Tom, and I was smiling while reading the epilogue. I am sooo happy to say that even though the book isn't too long, it gave more emphasis to the plot than intimacy scenes. Because too much sex and too less talk ruins the fun for me.
There was no hurrying along. The story moved at a steady, perfect pace. I liked the baseline of the story, that after pretending for a long while, it is hard to tell when someone is being real and genuine. Talking about the other side of the coin, one either gets tired of all the pretending or accepts it as their new lifestyle. We saw both cases in Justin and Lilly. So it was a great point for me, being able to see both sides of the coin.
I liked how their relationship developed. There was no insta-love, but there wasn't excess drawing-out either. Both of them were in a new place, and they were very mature about it, too.
Conclusively, if it wasn't for the typos, I would have given it 5 stars. But I had a fun time reading it. :) It was no cheesy romance, which I like to indulge in sometimes, but a proper, grown-up romance with grown-up issues.
There were a lot of things that annoyed me from beginning to end. And, while a tiny part of that is connected to this book morphing from M/M to F/F (gay fiction to lesbian fiction), most of it was due to other issues. And the 'tiny part' due to the modification is due to the relatively numerous occasions when the wrong pronoun was used. If you are going to go to the trouble of modifying a book, at least make sure the pronouns are correct at a bare minimum, okay?
Right, so. To be fair to the author, there were two large reasons that I disliked this book that are fair to be in a lesbian fiction book. They are just not things that I a) handle well; and/or b) have seen too often in my reading. And those two things are: miscommunication (loads in this book), and refusal to admit to being a lesbian for way too long, to the point where relationships suffer greatly.
In terms of sex - occurred. Graphically described. Which means a few words were used that were more graphic than just bluntly stating sex occurred. (words like 'clit' and 'nipples').
Would I read another book by this author? Sure, have to examine description, though, so I can better my chances of success. To see if miscommunication and/or other disliked plot choices play parts in the book.
"A way to show that you don't care. Displaying no or little interest." Example: person 1: Shelley called you a bitch the other day. person 2: Meh.
This is certainly a "meh" read. The story has been done time and time again so there is nothing new. Maybe I have outgrown the early 20's characters because I found these two not very likeable and immature. As other readers have mentioned, there's a great ball of miscommunication, another tired trope of lesfic. Add to that the many typos and overall it turned out to not be an enjoyable read, unfortunately.
Though, my favourite (definition) of Meh:
"Possibly the greatest response to any question ever. Also greatly executed with a shrug." Example: Guy 1: Dude, you just got run over by a semi, you okay? Guy 2: Meh.
My feelings on this book can be summed up with a song title: Hot & Cold by Katy Perry
Most of this book was one big misunderstanding mixed full of miscommunication. It did have some cute parts, and the ending goes a long way to make up for everything.
Edit: Harper Logan is a despicable type of book scammer. There’s a very good chance it’s more than one person using the same pen name. On top of that, all the stories are double published as f/f romances as HL Logan. names, pronouns, and sexual encounters are the only thing that differentiate between the two.
I loved the description, but the book itself didn’t meet my expectations, but it was still an okay read. I enjoyed reading about these characters and also their unnecessary drama 😂 it was a nice way to spend the afternoon.
Jessica is a big star. She's tagged as a player, gossip news always follows her. She's this diva for everyone but deep inside she's really nice and down to earth. Amelia on the other hand is a struggling actress. She doesn't have a stable job to pay her bills and she often got a series of bad luck. So, it all started with a "practice kiss" the only thing that doesn't settle on me is that they're both actresses and yet they are acting as if they're new to what they're doing especially Jessica. Well, I would get that with Amelia but really with Jessica? And other reason, isn't she the one who wants to do this movie? She even paid half of the production yet she acts like kissing a girl is hard to do. Like they have to practice outside set to do it? Sometimes, I feel like their connection is forced. I like cliche stories especially Hollywood but this one is not for me. The ending was cute but not enough to add one star on my rating.
Harper Logan writes a wonderful romance but this is one of the best. It's well written and easy to read. The two main characters, Tom and Justin are just so real that they grab you and you become entwined in their lives. You want to know what will happen. They meet on the set of a gay romance film and fall in love but it's never that easy. The plot keeps you turning the page again and again. I can honestly say if you love a romance this is a great place to start to get to know this author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
* Contains Spoilers* I really liked this story. It really showed Hollywood and fame can make a person lose themselves. Justice is a big time Hollywood actor whose reputation has him known as a ladies man. Truth be told he's not, its all just a publicity stunt by his agent who keeps a starlet on his arm. He hasn't been in a real relationship in years. Then he meets Tom a struggling actor and new co-star in a new gay(m/m) movie they're filming. Tom knows nothing about how the game is played and honestly believes Justin has been with all these women. Tom and Justin are attracted to each other and one thing leads to another. When Tom finds out the truth about Justin's so called 'girlfriends' he believes hthat hes just another publicity opportunity. Is what Tom and Justin have real or is it all a game. "Real Love" is emotional and intense. It really makes the aging ' its lonely at the top' hit home, 4.5 stars. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
The story is not one that has not beem told before but regardless was still a nice, light read. Jessica is a famous movie star who is not only hot but dates her hunky co-stars from every movie. Amelia is a struggling actress who has yet to land much and is looking for something, anything to get her going. They become co-stars in a lesbian movie and attraction flies. Overall the book was good. Its told from alternating POV of Jess and Amelia. You start to like them and root for them. Call them idiots and think they are sweet. I did feel it rushed things toward the end. I would have liked to have delved more into each character instead of the slight touching of certain things. Also, the ending (the end, end) seemed a bit out of character and rash but oh well. Regardless, quick, easy, and pretty carefree read. Free on kindleUnlimited and it made me smile a bit.
Tom is about to get his first role as an actor. Why is he concerned? Because he has to play the role of a gay man, and he never ever was attracted to a man, he fears he will not be good enough. When he is called back for the chemistry shot his car brakes down, he is sweaty from running because he is late and if that would be not enough he bumps into a white cat, oh did i mentioned that he is allergic to cat's? Turns out Marshmallow belongs to Justin Black, The Justin Black the famous star of rom-com's.
Justin grew up in Hollywood, and this movie Real Love is so close to his heart because of his best friend, who is gay and had a hard time growing up. So he wanna make a difference to show people that love between two mans is just as normal as it between a man and a woman. But he didn't expected Tom.
The story is sweet and i would so like to read a sequel to this book!
****I would like to thank the author for the privilege and opportunity of reading this ARC. My review is an honest opinion of the book****
This was a nicely written love story between Justin, a well known actor, and Tom, beginning his acting career. I loved the characters distinctive personalities, especially Justin because he was such a sweetheart. I really enjoyed the limousine part towards the end of the story. I found it to be hilarious, yet heartfelt and hot all at the same time. :) I didn't feel that Justin should have to give up his acting career (so he can remain honest and real) while Tom's career was still thriving, so the ending worked wonderfully for me. I thought the whole acting premise was different and engrossing. Oh, and I loved Cleo's (or marshmallow as Tom called the kitty) role in the story. She sounded so adorable.
Book is also pulling double duty as Starstruck, where chiseled abs become luscious curves, but otherwise, it looks like the same story, more double dipping.
It switches point of view each chapter, so naturally it's very focused on the two main characters.
There are a few other minor characters in the story as well, but given that the dog is proably the third most important character in the story, then it goes without saying that it's all about the two main characters.
Story-wise it sort of explores the whole topic of real love vs. pretending vs. acting. Plot-wise it's that simple tale of two people who fall in love with each other, then there's some conflict between them and they break up, and then who knows if they can work things out, get back together and have a happy ever after? Read to find out!
The ending seemed a bit over the top for me, but otherwise it was all pretty decent.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
I really enjoyed this story. Two straight actors have to play two gay men in a film. Through this book they come together as friends and then become more to each other. I love how Justin is so sweet and that Tom even though he is the unknown actor stands up to Justin throughout the book with his fiery personality which is a good contrast to his shy side. I like all the developments of trying to become a couple against the whole publicity from previous films for Justin. The book was well developed and the story well written. The characters were strong and well written and evolved throughout the book. A very enjoyable read.
There's a teeny bit of angst caused by poor communication but otherwise, this is just a sweet little story of two supposedly straight guys working on a Hollywood gay romance film and finding they might not be quite so straight after all.
Tom flew off the handle a bit much, Justin didn't say what he really felt a bit too much but the build up in their relationship was done well and there was enough world creation to add a bit of depth.
Eli and Taylor from one of Logan's other stories also make a brief cameo in this and there is, as usual, a cute cat thrown into the mix.
A 3.5 star...a sweet and fairly predictable story, but thats not the reason for the score; the plot was fine and the characters very likeable but there were grammatical errors and missed words, combined with some parts that lacked development. Overall I liked the book, but found it's lack of finesse diminished some of the enjoyment.
*~~*ARC kindly provided by the author to me in exchange for an honest review *~~*
So sweet and charming but also a bit dramatically at the end, I really loved this so much. :3
It was funny, it was a bit exaggerated but in a hilarious way and it contains a sweet cat. So many things you can like the book and the charming, hilarious character do its best. :)
It was hot and sexy in several parts without having to much focus on the erotic scenes, it was in my eyes well balanced.
Also the character development was shown, it is nice to see how Justin is reflecting his emotions and how they change him. I can tell without revealing to much this is a sweet gfy/ofy story and yes, maybe it is only fiction it fits perfect.
The bonus you can get at the end of the novel is a good round up of the whole story. Don’t miss it out. :)
5 out of 5 stars, also sweet to have a reappearance of the character of the other books by the author. It is now setting puzzle together, so you get a whole picture. :)
Harper Logan is definitely now on my favorite authors list. This is the second book I've had the opportunity to read in exchange for an honest review and I am so very glad for that opportunity because what a great gift to have come across another author to add to my arsenal of go to reads. Her MC's are so fun, sexy, lovable, heartwarming, honest (which is a big one for me), easy to read but not easy to put down. I liked how both Justin and Tom were pretty open with each other all throughout and yet despite that they still experienced misunderstandings because of personal insecurities. I hate when a book relies on lack of communication or purposeful misunderstanding to drive the plot. But this wasn't done that way at all. When asked they told. But sometimes when someone tells you how much they care it's hard to believe, especially when you're both dealing with feeling you've never experienced before. Both MC's identified as straight. What was also refreshing was that neither of them were "straightish" where they always thought they were into girls except for those few times.... No, they both were exclusively into women until they met. And I have no problem with the other scenario, I'm only saying it was refreshing to have an honest GFY from both perspectives. And they even discussed other possibilities besides just being Bi which was also a nice touch.
Harper Logan, for me, is now an author who I will immediately go to when I want to feel warm and squishy and just smile a whole lot. when I want an easy flowing story, with MC's I can love and laugh with. And to just feel good when all is said and done.
Harper Logan has done a brilliant job on this amazing story. I've never been disappointed in his works, but this is one of his best. The storyline was strong with a lot of twists and turns. The characters were well developed bringing you into their lives as actors and the relationship that grows whether it is real or fake. These two men, Tom and Justin, have never been with men romantically before, but hey they're actors. They decide to have private practice sessions with intimacy and sex to make it not so awkward on stage. But the lines of reality and fake begin to blur. Justin is used to faking everything in his life for publicity sake, but he never thought he could have feelings for a man. Tom thought the same and neither let the other know how they really felt. The sex becomes HOT and they fall deeper until it almost destroys their lives. Can these two men get beyond the acting and take on what they truly want...each other? This is a very emotional story that will tug at your heartstrings filling your heart at the same time. Loved the characters. A page turner as their story is told. Don't miss this one. Highly recommend this beautiful love story❤️❤️
I thoroughly enjoyed Real Love and I had a hard time putting it down. Great pacing made for an all too quick read and I would have loved for it to be a little longer. My first book by Harper Logan and definitely not my last!
Tom is a struggling actor who is auditioning for a breakout role in a film where two men fall in love. The lead in the film, Justin, is also funding it as it's a subject very close to his heart. Too bad Tom hates Justin at first sight and believes he's ruined any chance to star in it thanks to an altercation between the two, but amazingly, Justin wants him in the film. Only one catch, they are two straight guys who must act like they are in love. The solution: practice intimate scenes outside of rehearsal to make them not so uncomfortable. These two may get more than they bargained for when the rehearsal gets a bit too real.
Miscommunication, secrecy and a desire to avoid getting hurt is abundant in this quick read. I loved these two characters and an adorable cat never hurts!
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed Tom and Justin's story! Tom was a great character right from the start when he said "RIP my poor baby" about his car. He had me laughing out loud quite a bit while reading. Justin was such a sweetheart, you can't help but fall in love with him. It was hard to see how his life forced Justin into the situation he was in, and it is even harder to think about because it happens so much in real life. I think Harper Logan does a wonderful job portraying the struggle Justin went through with his public image, as well as the difficulty Tom had in trying to decipher Justin's feelings and if they were real. And Cleo, aka Marshmallow, stole the show during her scenes. Seriously, she is pretty great. I loved seeing Tom and Justin get their HEA. Highly recommend for a sweet and sexy romance.
This story has a great beginning. I was immediately drawn into the book of two straight guys playing love interests in a gay romance movie. They are both nervous & unsure. Together they decide that they need to practice being close to one another to avoid another bad day at rehearsal. They start to wonder if what they are feeling is real or just for the movie. They both have conflicting feelings, wondering what is real. It was fun watching them try to figure it out. A great story I happily recommend.
I really loved this couple. The plot was simple but cute and full of romance. I started thinking that maybe I would give 4.5 stars to it, but in the end there were some scenes that annoyed me a bit and gave 4.
Tom is 23 and his dream is to become a famous actor, he moved to L.A. for this reason and, there, he is doing all the worst payed jobs just to keep following his dreams. He is lonely and losing hope in his life. His gf left him after cheating on him and all seems going bad lately and the fact that finally he was able to enter a casting for a movie and his car decided to break down on his way there, well isn't helping his mood. He has to run to make it in time and almost gets killed falling om his arm,to avoid crushing a kitten on the street, this is the worst part of the day, or so he thinks... He finds out that he arrived just in time, sure he is sweating and he is dirty but he didn't lose the chance for the movie. He is starting to believe that maybe all is going to be finally ok, when he hears a man's voice. The guy doesn't want to start the casting until they find his cat and when he finds out who the other guy is, Tom is shocked. Justin Black has it all, the body, the face and the talent, and from his attitude he doesn't really need this movie or the money(he should be 23 too). Tom is pissed by this rich dude with no respect for other people's lives, but they need this damn cat and Tom is starting to believe that the kitten he saw only few minutes ago is the one. And he was right... They can finally start the audition, he and Justin are the MCs of the movie and a gay couple, both of them have never been with another guy or even kissed one, and they feel a bit awkward trying the kiss scene. They are almost kissing when Justin's phone rings and he leaves the room to answer the call. Tom can't believe that this jerk stopped the audition and with this any hope Tom had to be part of the movie, bcs he didn't turn off his cellphone... The film's producers thank him for coming and Tom is sure that this is it, he lost his chance and all for that jerk. Few days later he finds out that Justin was intrigued by his attitude and by the fact that he wasn't scared of telling what he thought and was an hothead, and had asked the producers to have him as his co-star. They will have a lot of scenes together and the intimacy btw 2 men is something new for them, so they agree on spending some time alone and practicing. Useless to say that this "practice" soon becomes something more, but both believe that the other doesn't feel anything and that this is just a pretend. Justin always had fake dates with his co-stars to boost a movie and also if he is tired of the lies he knows he needs this attention, if not for him, at least for the movie. Justin is making this movie for his best friend Simon, who is gay and was bullied when they were kids. Justin vowed that one day he would make a film to help other gay guys and girls and make their families and friends understand that love is the only important thing, not the genre. Real Love is that, and Justin will do all he can to make this film his best movie, also if this means keeping Tom away from his real feelings. But love has other ideas, and in the end , they pass from practicing kisses to making love. Tom can't believe the fact that another man is inside him, and that he is loving it, but at the same time he is sure that he is liking this, bcs the one with him is Justin. At start he thought that Justin was an arrogant and selfish guy, but he is much more. Justin is kind, sweet and lonely and Tom would do anything to make him happy, to see him smile. Tom is falling in love but he knows that Justin believes that a relationship btw co-stars would ruin the movie, still it hurts when he hears Justin tell his manager that they are not really dating, and most of all it hurts hearing him say this after their first time together.
There are some misunderstandings, Justin thinks that this was the thing Tom wanted to hear, that he didn't want to have another man tell him he had fallen in love with him, and Tom believes that Justin was really only pretending. They start spending time apart, and whe Tom sees Justin and his ex Lilly on some photos, he is convinced that the guy never wanted him but that he had some fun with him. He doesn't know that the photos are all a fake and that the only person Justin thinks about is Tom.
They are both jealous and without talking and clarifying what's really going on btw them, they start believing that the other is now with someone else. But thank the gods there is no cheating in this book and also if I wrote the tag "heterosexual-elements" nothing of that sort happens, since Justin and Lilly are only friends and we never see Tom ex-gf on page.
In the end, after some running and chasing and Tom almost getting arrested for stealing a limousine in the attempt to run from Justin and his heart pain, our guys finally have time to talk and understand that they were 2 idiots. They also have time to get dirty in the limousine and damn that scene was good..
In the last pages of the book we find out that Real Love was a big success, that now Justin is doing movies only with his boyfriend and that Tom finally become a famous actor. We also see Justin's mother finally understanding that her son is not only a source of money but someone to love.
In the epilogue or to better say, last chapter, we see Tom and Justin filming a wedding scene for their new movie, but the real surprise is when Justin, after the shooting, when he and Tom are alone, asks him to marry him. 1 year passed since the first time they met and both can't think about any other person they would be with more than the guy near them.
The book was cute, I liked our MCs interactions and how Tom was an hothead, sometimes the fact that they didn't talk and this created all these misunderstandings, annoyed me a bit, but in the end this book was romantic and the MCs relationship was credible.
I will read more books from this author.
