A Different Hard Drive? breaks down ADHD in a relatable, empathetic way. It explains some of the things about the condition that are often hard for those with ADHD to put into words themselves. This book seeks to bridge the gap that can exist between those who have the condition and those who do not. By laying out a foundational framework from which one can understand ADHD, without stigma, the goal is for everyone to be able to see what's going on, to “See in ADHD,” because we are all in this together.
This is a fantastic and easy to understand book. Short and to the point and really made me think. This is not the type of book i usually read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read the whole book straight through in a single day
Discussed ADHD behaviour and mannerisms in an easy to digest way (for this non-ADHD reader!). I definitely recommend if you are new to ADHD behaviours and don't know where to start reading. No clinical language and no jargon. It's a short read and very informative.
I did not find this book particularly helpful in describing the overall experience of ADHD. To her credit Friedman does occasionally mention not every ADHD experience is the same, but she seems to have written this book assuming a more severe case. For example, I think it undermines the intelligence of a people with ADHD to say they cannot understand how time works beyond "now" and "not now". It's perhaps more accurate to say that people with ADHD are inclined to see the world in these shades, but not incapable of using the clock like their NT peers.
I also was unable to identify what Friedman's credentials are beyond having family members with ADHD. No educational history is given, she confirms she does not have ADHD, and ACG following her name has no clear significance after a rudimentary Google search. This doesn't disqualify her from writing this book, it just doesn't position her as clearly in the field as I would have hoped.
There is a lot of information in this book.. all helpful. I am ADHD and she is spot on... I am currently making my husband read this so he can understand me better.. I wish this was around when I was a kid for my parents to read.
"ADHD means the person has a brain that works differently than someone without it." This is a concise, easy to read overview of ADHD. Ms. Friedman gives a very complex subject an understandable new light. It has helped me "get" the behaviors and explains why the differences exist. An excellent book for understanding ADHD.
