A modern P and P. Darcy and Bingley are musicians trying to find material for their new album in a rural college town...where they meet the Bennet twins who are surviving college together. Lizzy's a photographer, and Jane's a med student.
This is an unpublished Pride and Prejudice variation from 2006. There's a whole lot to like here, though there are also excesses that seem to be part of most unpublished works in the form of unnecessary scenes and over-explanation, which a good editor would pull out if this were to be published. As a result, it's way too long.
We have a thoroughly modern Elizabeth Bennet who doesn't back down to anybody. I admit that I struggle to like her at times because she's so aggressive and quick to react. She lacks the diplomacy and understated wit of Jane Austen's character. However, she's a good match for Darcy, who often intimidates his two bandmates, Fitz (his cousin) and Charlie.
I do find the plot to work very well as a modern variation. There are plenty of similarities but also enough differences from the original to keep you wondering where the author is going to go. The writing style is quite good with the exception of an overuse of italics, which seems to increase as the story goes on.
The "Epilogue" is less a true epilogue than it is a short story based on the same characters a bit more than a year later. I think I enjoyed it more than the rest of the book because its plot is developed more purposefully. LOVE the interplay of the characters here now that they've all gotten to know each other fairly well with the exception of Georgiana's new boyfriend, Jimmy, who is a bit overwhelmed by the strange relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth, while everyone else is used to their spirited sparring.
Overall, I recommend this if you have the time to devote to reading it.
I was pleasantly surprised. For a fanfic, this was really good! There were some grammar issues (of course there were; it was on a fanfic website), and there was a LOT of swearing which I wasn’t a huge fan of, but I thought the modernization of Pride & Prejudice was quite well-done.
