This sports manga has a lot going for it. In this volume, our lead character, Sawamura, really starts to develop, both as a person and as a baseball player. He is learning to focus and discipline his raw talent. His never say die attitude and his willingness to work hard to overcome all obstacles makes him an engaging hero.
There is a great sequence in the book where the coach demonstrates a simple pitching exercise using a towel that can enable a pitcher to hide his pitches from the batter. In a few panels this pitching technique is beautifully illustrated. It condenses a lot of practical baseball lore into a short and very effective sequence. The book does a great job of exploring baseball fundamentals in an entertaining and not pedantic manner.
This is another fine installment in this series. If you love baseball, or if you have an interest in sports manga, Ace of the Diamond is a must read series.
