An ex-government insider goes deep into darkest Hollywood, chasing a story. What starts as the search for yet more page-turning gossip, turns into a gonzo quest up a dark tributary along the river of fame, fortune, and the occult. Is the Fresh Prince of Bel Air really about a dead kid from the projects? Did Walt Disney really make a cartoon that offers an insanity-inspiring glimpse of Hell? And did a future TV Idol sacrifice his rival for glittering stardom? Doc Midnite is on assignment and no one, including his allies, are safe.
Nick Cole is a working actor living in Southern California. When he is not auditioning for commercials, going out for sitcoms or being shot, kicked, stabbed or beaten by the students of various film schools for their projects, he can often be found as a guard for King Phillip the Second of Spain in the Opera Don Carlo at Los Angeles Opera or some similar role. Nick Cole has been writing for most of his life and acting in Hollywood after serving in the U.S. Army.
Fear of the Unknown and Self-Loathing in Hollywood is a novella or maybe a short story by one of my favorite post apocalyptic genre authors. I normally don't get into short stories or novellas but I liked this one. It had a much different feel and style compared to Cole's what we see in his full length novels. I liked this about it.
Nick Cole has an interesting style and flair to how he writes. His thoughts and sentences are often short, punctuated, and twisted. This makes some of his writing a bit difficult or the characters a bit unreliable, either way; it fits in perfectly with his end of days worlds.
