My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.
I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.
I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.
Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.
Take a look around my website and check out some of the books I write, and their lovely covers. www.calliehutton.com
Simple tale and not entirely convincing. Hero was completely clueless to the harm he had done to the heroine by abandoning her without much communications soon after they became intimate. He treated her resentment of him more like an amusement or challenge to win back her esteem rather than feeling guilt and remorse for not trying harder to get in touch with her even after his return to England. She gave in to him too easily again despite her token protestations. Then there are other inconsistencies that did not add up like the fact that the hero did not immediately deem it necessary to visit the Duke after his stroke, despite considering the latter like a father figure. The 'simple' (developmentally delayed) but lovely Lady Amy was thought incapable of looking after her child yet had impeccable manners and spoke eloquently of her love for her child and its father. In addition, the hero and the Duke were supposedly the only people who did not regard Amy as a child, but they deemed her incapable of being a mother and took away her child as well as her voice to speak up for her beliefs. Unsatisfactory but rounded up to 3 stars on the basis of it being a novella hence by nature lacking in the details I normally enjoy in a full length novel.

For the Love of the Marquess is the second book in Callie Hutton's The Noble Hearts Series. In the first book we read the story of Elise and now we read about her younger sister, Juliet.
Although she was a bit angsty and prone to wallowing, I really felt for Juliet. With the timing of everything and the lack of contact, I understood where she was coming from. I would have come to the same conclusion that she did. I sympathized with both her sense of hurt and betrayal and also with her reluctance to trust him again.
I liked Graham, but I wish I had been able to like him more than I did. He was just so clueless as to how much hurt he had caused Juliet with his actions. Sure, he had a legitimate reason for going and for staying away as long as he did. Yes, he attempted to send her letters. But he can't truly be surprised by her hurt and anger after 8 months away when he didn't wait tell her he was leaving in person nor give her an idea of when to expecthis return. His attention, seemed to me, to be more focused on winning her back than on address how hurt and betrayed she was feeling.
What happened to those letters though? I can understand one going missing, maybe two. But more than that sounds like a certain gent must have been lying. And I appreciated that he was keeping his promise to not say say anything about what business he had been called away on, but truly this was the woman he was marrying, so much angst and suffering could have been avoided had he just told her.
Elise and Juliet's stories both followed a pretty similar track. And so I'm really hoping going forward that Marigold's will be unique from theirs.
I am very much enjoying this series and I look forward to reading about how things will turn out for Marigold. I recommed this series to fans of historical romance. Plus they're really short, less than 200 pages. Perfect for if you're looking for something quick to read. There are intimate scenes in these books, but there are only one or two which are fairly short. Therefore you could easily skip over them if they are not your cup of tea. ______
I read this book with my Kindle Unlimited membership.
Funny! I loved the characters and storyline so much. Juliet and Graham finally had their wedding. I really enjoyed this book. On to Marigold and her Season. Just love these stories. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜
One line sums it up: "He would have to earn her trust back inch by inch." And everyone of those inches was fraught with repetitive thoughts, especially from heroine, Juliet.
Summary- Graham and Juliet fell in love, planned marriage. Juliet asked Graham to wait till after sister's wedding to speak to her father. After they had first sexual encounter, he has secret family responsibility that forces him to leave for eight months. He leaves her very short note. Wrote letters while away, but she only received one.
From Chapter one to halfway through, the story revolves around Juliet's angst- again and again- and his determination to win her back.
Despite Graham telling her, as soon as he returned, that he still wants to marry her, Juliet still believes otherwise. He begins to woo her for second time to win her back. And again.... "No, he most likely thought she was a woman of easy virtue who would engage in affair with him."
3 stars because story might have gotten better late in the book. Unfortunately I had no interest in finding out.
I did like this book although as others have said, it was a bit repetitive and I got tired of it after awhile. This is probably my least favorite romance trope-like a 3's Company episode-misunderstandings.
I liked the heroine but liked the hero more. I understand his word is his honor and he wanted to keep the Duke's secret, but I felt the whole thing could have been avoided if he could tell the one person in the world who should know-his almost-fiance!
I think the author is a great writer so I'm off to read the first book in the series. There are also typos in this book that need to be fixed.
Juliet Bishop is already so sure that she would be married right after her older sister's wedding. But she got her heart broken when her intended, Graham, the Marquess of Hertford, leaving London so suddenly leaving only notes to her about his business that he need to attend. Graham actually didn't want to leave Juliet's side, he had intended to speak to her father soon about their marriage after they spent one night of passion together. But Graham had to attend to the urgent business the Duke needed him to do. When Graham back eight months later trying to mend his relationship with Juliet, the Lady want nothing to do with him and Graham had to do everything he could to win Juliet back
When I first read the summary, I already hate Graham. I thought that he didn't tell his reasons, or at least leave a note, to Juliet. So when I actually read the book I'm surprised that Graham DID leave notes, many notes in fact, that Juliet ignored. Graham had stated that he needed to attend an urgent business but couldn't speak of it, therefore Juliet should have understand that it's a matter of secrecy. I was frustrated by her attitude, when she demanded Graham to tell her about his secret business. When it's labelled as "secret", means it couldn't be told to anyone. I guess Juliet didn't know the meaning of the word "secret", and the sincerity in Graham's words when he said "It's never about us." I mean, he left her notes!
I usually dislike stupid heroine in historical romance, and Juliet is included in this category. I was so delighted with Elise (and a little bit irritated at her toward the end, but find her very fun since the beginning of the book) so I was a little bit disappointed that Juliet didn't give me the same feeling. Lord Pomeroy also did almost nothing in this book when he played such a big part in the first book
Other than Juliet, I actually like their chaperone that Lord Pomeroy asked to accompany them. Seems like there will be something between Lord Pomeroy and the Lady in the future. Perhaps a story of their own?
Overall ratings: 3.5 stars (when will we get the half star rating system?)
Lady Juliet will never trust a man ever again......never will she grant her heart and have it broken! Graham the Marquees of Hertford has crushed her heart and left after sharing the most memorable night with her, now he's left without a word, and he probably has her as a woman of easy virtue! After months of trying to get over him he shows up and expects to carry on as if nothing happened. Juliet doesn't know what to think, her treacherous heart betrays her every time he's near and her mind says she needs to make a match without love. How can she find happiness when Graham thwarts her every chance? Circumstances have Graham being secretive about his absence. But now he's back and he's not going to leave Lady Juliet get away. The time spent away strengthened his love for her, he means to make her his wife. Now all he needs is to convince her....and that's not going to be easy!
An enjoyable heartwarming read with a few misunderstandings that could have easily been resolved. Loved the fact that Graham wasn't the type to give up easily, he knew what he wanted and made sure he got it. He also understood that for a man keeping his word defined him as an honourable person. Juliet is driven by emotion but gave him the benefit of doubt and gave in. I have to say that my favourite person is the Earl of Pomeroy their father, he's a wonderful father with a quirky sense of humour I can't wait to see what's in store for him.
I was gifted a copy for my honest unbiased opinion.
Lady Juliet, Lord Pomeroy’s second daughter, and Graham the Marquess of Hertford are in love and wish to marry. Graham agrees to wait until Lady Elise, Juliet’s sister, and Lord St. George are married to ask her father for permission to marry. Before he can meet with her father, Graham leaves for France with no more than a note to Juliet. Juliet is crushed, heartbroken. He returns eight months later and declares that he still loves her and wants to marry her. Since he is being secretive about his absence, Juliet does not trust him. He fights hard to win her back. Just as he has accomplished his goal and the wedding is being planned, a bit of gossip about his trip to France threatens to cost him Juliet’s love again. What kind of gossip could tear them apart? Will Graham lose her again? Is there a way to let her know the truth without breaking a promise he made to the man who raised him? It will take an unlikely conspiracy to help solve the problem, if it works.
The second story in the Noble Hearts Series is just as happy and heartwarming as the first. For the Love of the Marquess is a story of love gone awry due to a lack of communication and a misunderstanding between the hero and the heroine. The likeable and engaging characters in this story are familiar, with a couple of new additions. The plot is well written, simple, but with a few twists and turns. The humor and family love found in the first book are here as well. Another lovely story from Callie Hutton. I look forward to the next book.
This was a short sweet read. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline that was given to the characters. I loved how the readers got to see what happened to the mid youngest sister of Lady Elise. We got to know Juliet much more, as well as her father “The Earl of Pomeroy.” From book one, we got to read about Lady Elise who refused to get married, and now her sister is in a different situation. Lady Juliet has been in love with her prince charming “Graham, the Marquess of Hertford.” Graham was very much handsome, charming and very determined to have Juliet marry him. I loved his flirtatious comments that he would give our Lady Juliet. He actually made me swoon throughout the entire book. When Juliet kept refusing him, for reasons you will find out soon. I was like, I would so have you! If you were real! LOL! Seriously, ladies, he was that well of a sweet talker. I loved his persistence and dedication to Juliet. Like all couples, they have to find a way to forgive and communicate with one another. We all make mistakes, and in this story, you will find yourself cheering for our leading couple. I recommend this book and book one, from this series of (The Noble Hearts) where you will meet Juliet’s sister, Elise. Happy reads! Enjoy!
What a wonderful series of a proud papa who has raised his daughters on his own and now would like to see them married so he can enjoy his days in peace and contentment. Juliet is the second daughter. She was certain that she had found the man of her dreams to be her happily after ever. Until.... he disappears for eight months without explanation. Sadly, correspondence with explanations are at first only a few written lines then none at all. When Graham returns to claim his beloved Juliet, he is met with resistance and frustration. He realizes that he must recapture Juliet's heart and she is not going to make it easy. It truly is a game of cat and mouse and a match of words and wits. Along the way, we meet the heartwarming Lady Ann, the well meaning Lady Crampton, Mr. Boyle and others. They all have a role to play in Juliet and Graham's story. There were twists, turns and misunderstandings along the path of happiness. Thankfully, Graham is steadfast in his love for Juliet. I look forward to seeing what Ms. Hutton has planned for Marigold. Could Lady Crampton and papa find some happiness of their own? I look forward to finding out.
I really loved this second book in Callie's series. She has a way of writing that gets your attention and keeps it. This is the story of Lady Juliet and Graham, Marquess of Hertford. They want to marry, but her father has decreed that his daughters marry in the order of their age. Juliet is the second daughter, and Elise, the oldest daughter, is to marry soon. Graham, who was raised by the Duke of Reading, receives a message from the Duke that is urgent. The Duke's daughter, Amy, is unmarried and pregnant, and the Duke wants Graham to take her to his sister, who lives in France to have her baby, and not to mention it to anyone. Graham takes her, leaving a note for Juliet that he would be gone for a while, but would write to her. He returns 8 months later to a Juliet who has turned into a brittle stranger, and he is unable to tell her where he has been and why he was gone so long. Will he be able to convince Juliet to forgive him and give them a second chance at love?
I was given an advanced reading copy by the publisher in exchange for an honest review, and was not compensated in any way. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
My only gripe was: Graham was going to.... his plan was to speak with.... when he came back.... ah cripe man just do it!!! There were multiple opportunities and a multitude number of ways to let the woman, he loved more than life itself, know he was attending to a serious family obligation. You big dummy, you could have just taken her with you. Since it was so easy to get to the estate, take her and the freaking army or whomever you needed at the end but I guess that would have shortened the story BUT there was still the secondary story of what the other couple was doing while he was convincing the h of his sincere and unending, (throw up) love for her. As always, the story was well written, I just was not feeling the H. He appeared to be a strong man when it came to everyone and everything except communicating with his “one true love”. I completed it because it was next in the series and I am somewhat OCD about reading in order. If you do not suffer from that particular disorder, life will go on if you skip this one. IJS.
For the Love of the Marquess by Callie Hutton is a fairly short historical romance, a perfect choice for those with limited time for reading. Don't let the size of this book fool you though. Ms Hutton has packed this book with amazing, lovable characters. Graham and Juliet's story is well-written and loaded with drama, bits of humor and spice. This book grabbed my attention and kept me anchored to my kindle until the last page. I enjoyed reading For the Love of the Marquess and look forward to reading more from Callie Hutton in the future. For the Love of the Marquess is book 2 of The Noble Hearts Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I found this book discounted on Amazon via BookBub; this is my honest review. -I have read three books of the series so far and this is the one I liked least. -Too much angst, too much drama, too much selfishness and lack of trust, for too long, up until about 78% of the book. -Then everything starts again later because they (parent and chaperone) only checked the rumors later when the wrong was already done. -It wasn't funny at all; it was sad and got me angry many times. When I was finished reading I was relieved that I didn't need to go back to it. -There was no chemistry between Graham and Juliet; only lust on both part. -Editing needs another pass; it was distracting to no end.
For the Love of the Marquess is a delightful, fast, easy read. It’s the ever present story of men having no clue as to what a woman’s thinking and how their thoughts can so easily make a complete tangle of the reality of the situation. The woman falls in love, blows a situation totally out of perspective by listening to her insecurities. True, it looked bad. But men being men, he naturally has no clue as to how to clear up the misinterpretation. Gossip, as always, leads to pain and disaster, but eventually everyone begins to understand that. 😊
I laughed and got mad at this characters more so than with the other books in the series. Juliet and Graham were kept apart from each other for 8 months. Graham was helping his guardian and Juliet was heartbroken. Soon Graham returns and a series of event ensures they spend time together again and resume their courtship. What either of them knew was that Grahmns time away was going to come back and bite him in the arse.
So this short book is about Juliet and Graham, it's too short that the story is running around! Once you connect and then it's gone! Though the humour in the book is appreciative!
But rest all is little predictable and there is direct comparison between this book and For the love of Viscount! So the Viscount stands better then this...
Though I am going to read other two books also! You can read it once....
For those looking for a short, easy-to-follow historical romance with shallow but realistic enough characters...
In this book, everything seems to be against the hero, who keeps his honor and his love until the end! It's a novella; I truly can't ask for much more than this...
Of note is the way this family somehow captivates us to read the rest of the series; for example, it is obvious that Papa Henry will eventually fall in love with his daughter's chaperone 🤭
After her father's that his three daughters should marry in the order of their births, it is Juliet's Turn to wed. Graham and Juliet have fallen in love when he is suddenly faced with an unusual request that could change everything. Callow Hutton brings us a truly romantic tale of a broken heart and the need to rebuild a trust lost.
Graham knows he loves lady Juliet and will stop at nothing to win her back after he vanishes for a year to unforeseen circumstances he promisedc not to talk about. This was a great 2nd chance rromance. Will Lady Juliet forgive him for disapeering or will she become a spinster. This was a great standalone romance with a HEA.
Graham and Juliet swept me away along with their romance in this tale of courting in the tin in London. The author took me back in time and I felt a part of the past and the story. It was great to revisit the characters of the series. Incorporating a special needs character was genius. It's so easy to get attached to an innocent heart. Great read! Book gifted to me.
2.5 rounded up. This story was better than first book in the series. Both Graham and Juliet were likable characters, that didn't communicate. It would have been a short story if they had. Treatment of Graham's sister brought me to tears. Steamy with a result of babies. Lots of 'typos' in the print copy. I won't be continuing with the series or this author.
This is the second book in the noble hearts series. Juliet and Graham's story. She thought they were in love, then he disappeared. Now he,s back after months of being gone. Now he must fight for their love and future. But once trust is lost their future is uncertain. Thank you ❤️
I adore this couple. Following in her sister's footsteps, the romantic escapade of this couple is delightful. The road to their HEA isn't smooth but it shows that truth will always lead to happiness.
The story picks up shortly after Elise's wedding. Lady Juliet, Elise's younger sister has doubts about Grahm, the Marquess of Hertford who has disappeared for eight months without explanation. It's up to Grahm to warm up the relationship once he returns.
This review is based solely on my personal opinion of the story. It was horrible. I hate books where the heroine doesn’t trust their hero after saying they love them. How can you have love with out trust?
For the Love of the Marquess by Callie Hutton is a wonderful, entertaining story. The ending could have been a little better, my opinion. I did enjoy reading this story. Thanks
