Eddie Vangh has kept a secret for seventy years--he’s a vampire. Converted as an American soldier in Germany in 1945, Eddie does not feed on human prey, he gets his blood from his own plasma firm. When Eddie meets Spartak, he soon discovers why this crime has not been reported to the blood and blood products were stolen. Spartak is also a vampire, and what has been taken from him is invaluable encapsulated blood from very old vampires. As it turns out, there are a number of vampires in Seattle, some far more dangerous than others. Finally, Eddie isn’t alone, he’s fallen in love and no longer feels completely isolated, but getting the stolen blood back could cost him everything, and failing to do so will prove fatal.
This book is very entertaining and lively to read over and over again. It talks about the life of Edward Chen, now Eddie Vangh .A private investigator, who for the past seventy years lived a secluded life and laid low and done low profile work not to attract attention. He was normal human being, but that fact got change when he received blood from Jurik, a german to be saved. After the blood the transfusion,Edward turned into a vampire without knowing who he really was until his blood donor Jurik, explained the transition he was going through. It all happened in World War II in Germany when Edward lost his unit on the battle field and found himself in a lone and forgotten home with a woman and a wounded daughter. He tried to help but was shot by Jurik, a german soldier and an enemy who thought Edward Chen was attacking his family. When Jurik realized that, Edward Chen was rather saving his daughter Darja, then he decided to give Edward a second Chance to live as a vampire as he is.When the war was over,Edward returned to Seattle, where he grew up and joined a secret investigative agent of the government and now retired. His colleagues are old and dead and gone, but still he looked like a twenty-year-old man due to his new nature as a vampire. He has constantly, changed his name every twenty years not to attract any foul play. And for the past seventy years as a vampie he had never come intact to anyone like him and thought he was the only special person in Seattle alone in America . All his loneliness and seek and hide life style abruptly came to a standstill, when he received a call from Mr.Spartak's daughter Karan and was contracted by Mr.Spartak(a fine rich and respected vampire) himself to look into a theft case of a stolen pint from his storage, of which he would be paid $1,500 per-day. That was when Eddie Vangh, realized that he was not the only vampire in Seattle ,but they were more. And even there is a secret community that exist, and has no knowledge of...
A Mystery Buried By Supernatural Exposition & Dialogue
I liked the mystery premise, so I really wanted to like this book. A vampire PI named Eddie Vangh has lived for sixty years in Seattle, thinking he was the only vampire there. That is, until a rich & powerful vampire needs a supernatural PI and hires Eddie, who is introduced to a vampire family and society. In about one day, PI Eddie becomes a top-tier member of the vampire hierarchy. He learns that his new boss and the Vampire Council of the northwestern U.S. knew about him and other vampires—leaving those vampires and rogues or evil vampires free to roam the northwestern U.S. So right outta the gate, this story read like a less than logical fantasy.
The early chapters are filled with exposition/data dumps about vampires, descriptions of vampire houses/buildings, demonstration of vampire knife-fighting, details about blades and non-bladed weaponry, plus details about vampires’ job descriptions.
As new characters are introduced, their descriptions read as though the author dragged and dropped whole sections from his character studies. At 85% a “new” character is suddenly introduced, quickly turns into a major player (like Eddie), and becomes the reason that drives the pre-denouement action.
Dialogue seems awkward, unnatural and stilted. I made up contractions and re-ordered sentences as I read.
The interesting “locked-room” mystery—of how precious and valuable blood products were stolen from a high security area—is buried amongst the long periods of dialogue and exposition. The mystery interested me, so I riffled through the book to excavate the mystery storyline to figure out whodunnit, why and how.
This book needs a copy editor with a sharp red pen.
When I first came across this book I was very intrigued. A vampire private investigator who doesn’t know he’s not the only vampire in Seattle? On top of that, he gets contacted by another vampire who has been robbed. It was definitely an interesting read! I like how the author jumped into Eddie’s life and pushed the plot forward in the first two chapters, then introduces the readers to Eddie’s past and how he became a vampire. It helps you understand why Eddie has been isolated ever since he’s been turned. I also love how because of his isolation, the reader accompanies Eddie on this discovery of being introduced into vampire society. He meets so many different vampires in such a short period of time while deciding whether or not he’ll take the case. It was a great way to keep the audience intrigued. There’s so many added elements to the story that are brought forth by the new characters he meets and it’s all craftily interwoven with the bigger storyline. It’s like putting a puzzle together; each piece makes the picture clearer. Apart from some spelling errors, great story! I would definitely read a sequel!
Eddie has been a top notch PI for quite some time. Much longer than the average person, in fact. When he goes to work on a case for the prestigious and secretive Newmark family he not only finds a challenging case, finally, he finds out that he is not alone.
I’m not up on all the vampire lore, but this book did pique my interest. I love history, and vampires are uniquely qualified to be involved in historical novels due to their lifespan. I genuinely enjoyed the character development and found myself interested in the vampire culture and rules. What I did not enjoy was the lack of editing. Mispelled words, improper punctuation, tense hopping and lots of redundancy plagued the manuscript, in addition to some flat dialogue for everyone except the main character. I would really like to see this developed into a series, but only if the editing is seriously addressed.
I wanted to read a scary vampire story. Instead I got a really good private detective story with a lot of vampires in it. I enjoyed the story and the characters very much. There are a lot of characters and I didn't get most of the people straightened out as to who was who until close to the end. These vampires are as different from Dracula as were the Twilight vampires. It made for an interesting story and all I wanted to do was read. I hope you'll like it too. Happy Reading.
My friends, who know the author personally, thought I might enjoy this book. ThAt was an understatement. I LOVED this book. I can.t say enough, or praise it enough. Please everyone who wants a different vampire story, read it. I guarantee you will.not be disappointed. Linda B.
For a vampire book it was a refreshing change,I have read a lot of them.I like the plot ,the humor and the strong women characters, this is no competing romance lol.
Purloined Pint is a fascinating story about a man who was turned into a vampire after receiving a blood transfusion during the WWII era. The part of this book that hooked me is the chain of events and how they were written so well. It is so easy to follow along with the novel.
Eddie lives under the radar for decades, working as a PI. He changes his name and moves on so no one suspects something odd from the vampire. He never came across any other vampires so he always assumed he was alone. He never accidentally ran into any or anything since he went home to Seattle after being turned. He gets a job offer from a well-respected vampire who is missing a pint from his storage. This completely flips Eddie's whole world as he discovers that there are more vampires out there, and there's even a community.
I personally enjoyed this book because I am a fan of paranormal and urban fantasy books. But I can also see if you were interested in books that are also mystery thrillers that this might work for you also. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in those genres.
