Maywitch

Rate this book
When suspicious incidents begin rattling North America, it doesn't take long for the authorities to realize that something supernatural is happening. To solve the problem, though, they'll have to ask for help from Maywitch - the organization of mages tasked with keeping their peers in check.

Kay Adamis, a young witch struggling through college, doesn't complain too much when Maywitch drafts her. She's a decent firecaster who's better at magic than studying, and since her parents aren't around, she could use some help paying her bills.

But nobody warned her that the casualties were quietly mounting after months of magical unrest and resulting cover-ups. Demon-summoners and necromancers lurk in the shadows, and some of them seem to be banding together - with potentially dire consequences. With Maywitch's enemies growing stronger every day, Kay has to learn to trust her new companions and herself while rooting out the cause of the chaos unfolding around them.

Content Note: Recommended for ages 15+ due to violence and profanity.

Queer. Cat lady. Sci-fi. Currently focusing on getting good queer lady words into the hands of as many people as possible - especially young and marginalized folks.

I'm working on the third book of the Quicksand trilogy, which should be out in late February 2018.

Best way to describe this book would be urban fantasy. This story is about a group of magical mages, with different powers, working for an organization against demons and other evil. This book had some big issues for me. Luckily, it had a lot of action that kept me reading anyway. Overall, it ended up being just okay.

I’m not big on books were things happen to the main character when they don’t have any say in it. That was the main storyline, things just kept happening to Kay and she didn’t have much power to do anything about it. Kay is a college student and fire mage. She is given no choice but to join a magical organization. An organization which is a complete joke and constantly keeps getting Kay almost killed. I found myself frustrated with the circumstances and wishing Kay would do anything about it. I kept hoping Kay would find some backbone or super magical powers and sudden become a badass, but nope.

I found some small continuity issues. Either that or the book just confused the hell out of me. There were also some high action parts that I had trouble following. These parts needed better explanation to get the picture the author was trying to convey.

The last quarter of the book I started enjoying it a little more. While I was still frustrated I finally connected a little to Kay and some other characters. I could almost consider reading a sequel (if there is one) but I’m more than a little conflicted. If you are a Kindle Unlimited member and an urban fantasy fan, you might want to try this.

DNF Kindle Unlimited. Just not for me!

Others will absolutely enjoy this more, it very much reminded me of that TV Show Motherland: Fort Salem. (Which I also couldn't get into). So if you enjoyed that you will like this, it's very similar in story and themes. So I would definitely recommend it to those people.

Im just too old and jaded for very Americanized teen drama.

Very YA/NA, secrets and magics with very competent older teens and new adults saving the Americas from evil demonic forces, plus a missing mother trope. And some women loving women.

Absolutely recommend it to those who it would interest!

A fast-paced adventure about queer witch law enforcement agents and demon summoning. There were elements that didn't seem fully fleshed-out, most noticeably certain familial relationships, and the speed at which Kay adapts to her circumstances had me raising my eyebrows, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book and had difficulty putting it down. And if you have difficulty with gore or graphic violence, the author included warnings at the start of each chapter that contained it, making or easy to skip. All in all, a good popcorn book.
