Nick Spencer is a comic book writer known for his creator-owned titles at Image Comics (Existence 2.0/3.0, Forgetless, Shuddertown, Morning Glories), his work at DC Comics (Action Comics, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents), and for his current work at Marvel Comics (Iron Man 2.0, Ultimate Comics: X-Men).
Secret Empire #1 focuses on the two sides of the story: the ruling Hydra empire and the interplay between their "high council", and the superheroes in hiding, just beyond the reach of Hydra with the sole purpose (for now) to survive and help others survive.
While the whole reading experience so far with Secret Empire is just okay, this series feels like it is treading very generic and familiar grounds. It is too obvious to deny that the general beats in this issue feels like a Star Wars story on Earth.
Now that Marvel is pleading to its readers to wait until the series ends, well okay, give us a great story then.
I initially had high hopes for Nick Spencer's take on Captain America; a reversal of everything what the character symbolized; and a brave statement on the direction of American politics and of some of its citizens. In short time, Hydra Cap or Neo-nazi Cap became infamous because it hit on everything that was wrong with the perception of the country at that moment. This was a story I was interested in seeing it play out and this series was the climax. Then event fatigue became real.
Marvel Comics had a ton of event stories this year, and with it came extra-sized books at an extra price. I live in a country that exports this books and extra dollar that came with these books and the premium I had pay to read them as it happened was just too much. Coupled with event fatigue and the fact that there was a zero issue before the number one issue was enough for this reader to just give up and take a break from comics. The controversy behind this story arc was enough to distance myself from Marvel comics. A break was needed, and it had to be clean one and go cold turkey.
It was several weeks until I went back and tried the few new books Marvel offered for free. Secret Empire #1 was one of them and I have say while McNiven's illustrations was certainly enough to merit this book four stars, I just didn't care about the Nazi Cap story anymore.
I'm still not positive where this falls in any timeline, since only a few of the comics out there seem to actually be crossing over with this one, but it's a good read anyway.
Really fun stuff to read and I don't give a shit if people didn't like it. (well, I really haven't read anything to avoid spoilers and such all this time until SE ended, but c'mon... come on... you know what's what. Every time there's a comic book event everyone is hating'.. so... yeah..) I may be some of them haters sometimes but I'm special and I know my shit and they don't so shutup.
BUT.
I like it.
SO interesting and since it's making me readreadreadread and wanna read more thats' a plus. I just read Secret Warriors #1 to try a 3rd tie-in to the event but nope, it almost ruined my excitement cuz it wasn't good. Boring stuff. So I'm not continuing Secret Warriors right now and I'll just keep reading my SE and Cap's books and them Uprising brave new world stuff.
Anyway, Cap is HYDRA. Kills bunch of people and friends and whatnot, there's a resistance group, half of them want to kill Cap / the other half want to somehow save him from this whole thing and the games begin \o/
I see this series has gotten allot of slack....I dig it! I might change and become one of the haters as I continue the series. But So far I like this allot. Just Looking at this as a story on it’s own this is fine. So far....
A phenomenal comic, even for someone incredibly new to comics it was an enjoyable and fun read. "Secret Empire" plays on the concept of Captain America being a sleeper agent for Hydra and destroying the Marvel heroes from within. The heroes that survived are forced into hiding and have to live in a world governed and ruled by Hydra. Even though the surviving heroes try to resist Hydra, they're efforts make little to no impact.
I bought the second issue and I can't wait to dive into it. Being so new to comics it is hard for me to fallow the eminence backstory of every single character in the Marvel universe so wiki has been by best friend for sure. After its all said and done I would recommended this to anyone interested in comics, old or new to the super hero world.
On top of all the heroes present, all kinds of changes as well. The first sentence of the comic's introduction says "what if your greatest ally was secretly your greatest enemy" and from there we learn Captain America believes in the ideals of Hydra! If I was a history teacher I'd recommend my students read this during a unit on totalitarian societies; whether we're studying Mussolini's fascism or secret police like the Stasi of East Germany or KGB of the Soviet Union.
Amazing, i love how they show this captain america emotional side, like he really care about whats going on and what he did. Stark, the character that is always leading and trying to find new ways to help people and fix stuff, he already lost hope, which makes you realize how serious the situation really is. Very good comic.
That zero issue made me feel like I might be able to enjoy this series. This one had it's moments, but I'm just not sure I'm going to like where this is going. Not very much was explained this issue, but I expected as much. I liked everything going on with the resistance.
Like with # 0, the story was good but I'm not confident enough in Marvel to make this something that actually means anything. Also the list of crossover titles in the back of the issue was staggering.
This series has been OK so far, but I have really had to suspend disbelief to get into the story. It is trending downward for me but still good enough to keep going.
