Pride & Penitence

Rate this book
When her daughter comes across a box of letters written by Georgiana’s long-lost love and resolves to reunite the tragic lovers, Georgie can either let her daughter stumble upon her secret past… or face it—and him—herself.

Georgiana Egerton had Malcolm MacKintosh shaking in his boots from the first moment he saw her. Just seventeen, but spirited and witty, she stole his heart right from the start. There was no use denying it. What he was willing to deny was the emotions that beset him when he sees her again twenty years later. His Georgie might be as bonny as the day they first met, but the heartache and betrayal that’d nearly been the death of him couldn’t be set aside simply because desire was still alive and well.

Twenty years ago, Georgiana was ready to face scandal and hardship to be with Mal. With that love denied to them both, she spent decades filled with guilt over the pain she’d caused him. Now, to satisfy her daughter’s unrelenting meddling, she’s forced to confront the past… and Mal again. There’s no point in hoping to revive their old affair. After all that’s happened, her logical mind knows it’s too late for the two of them to begin again.

Her heart, though… well, it’s not quite as convinced.

I usually don't enjoy second chance romances as they are not my favorite (personal reasons, and I will leave it at that), but I love Angeline Fortin's novels, so I had to read this one... And I was not disappointed. As a note.... this book is also titled "Once Again, My Laird" on other formats (it's the exact same book), so I wanted to point that out for clarity's sake.

Georgianna ("Georgie") is the daughter of a Duke who falls head over heels in insta-love with a lieutenant in Her Majesty's Scottish Army: Malcolm MacKintosh ("Mal"). Though she knows her father desires a more advantageous match for her as she is his only child, she fervently believes that once he realizes how much in love she is with Mal, he will give them his blessing. Mal puts on his best and most charming face in front of his love's father at every opportunity, but he will never be what the Duke wants: a titled gentleman, and Mal is the 3rd son in his family. Mal begs Georgie to run away with him, and she agrees, but she does not show up on the appointed time, nor does she show the following night, so Mal assumes the worst and throws himself into being a soldier, destined to never find love as he lost the only one he ever truly cared for.

Twenty years later, Georgie is a recently widowed duchess as her father arranged a marriage to his friend after Mal left her without any word. Though the Duke she wed was 20 years her senior, he treated her well, and they developed a loving friendship and were devoted to their 2 children. Now that her husband has passed, her daughter has married, and her son has reached age attainment (18 years old) to assume the duchy, Georgie feels it is time for her to move on. As she is packing, her daughter stumbles across love letters from Mal and decides that she must reunite her beloved mother with her true love. When the first Malcolm MacKintosh arrives on her doorstep (a 60-something paunchy man with gout), Georgie realizes two things: 1 - her daughter must think her WAY older than her 38 years; and 2 - said daughter won't stop until she finds the "right" Malcolm; thus, Georgie embarks on her own quest to find her Mal and try to set things right. But will he give the woman he thinks callously abandoned him another chance?

What I liked:
--- The love story unfolded as memories, but it felt like you were reading it as it was happening, so it wasn't told in a "flashback" way which made it feel more "real" (if that makes sense)
--- Oh the steamy goodness!
--- The main characters were flawed but likeable

What I didn't like as much:
--- I felt like Mal could have applied a little more benefit of the doubt than he did -- he also refused to listen to his friend who knew more about what happened which would have gone a long way to resolve things sooner
--- The "surprise" was not a surprise as it was pretty obvious --- still fun, though

Overall, another great story by Ms. Fortin --- I love a juicy historical, and that is what she consistently delivers! This was a quick read as it is more of a novella, so easily read in one sitting at the beach, by the lake, on the mountainside, or even in the living room on your summer vacation!

Plot --- 4/5
Main Characters --- 4/5
Supporting Cast --- 4/3
Steam Level* --- 3.5/5
Violence --- none (some post-battle descriptions, but nothing gory)
Language --- nothing egregious
POV --- 3rd

(*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild; 2/5 - sensual but nothing descriptive; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere; 4/5 - whoa!; 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all)

I love Angeline's books. Her time travel ones are the first I read and fell in love with them and I must say they are my favs. I love the full length books more than novellas. I need more time with my characters! This one moved a bit quick to fit it all in, but it was a cute story. I want more time with the love scenes. They are so precious with all these characters. Once again, Angeline does a wonderful job whisking me away with her stories!

Sweet and quick read. I’m new to Fortin (after finishing the five time travel stories). This story had me in tears in so many sections! (I hate read jerkers mind you). Such a compelling and lovable outcome as it should. I will continue to find all her novels and catch up.

Loved It

A wonderfully told story of a love so strong that it lasts through two decades. I loved the characters and the way they become intertwined with each other. Romance and mystery.
