An outstanding book that filled a much needed niche in the history genre --- the history of Ukraine.
For starters, the presentation of this book is pleasing. I really like the cover, it has many interesting illustrations and photos enhancing the history, and has a nice book mark ribbon.
More importantly, it goes from prehistory to date, go over the history of this region well enough. In so doing, it shows the genesis of Ukraine and its people as distinct from others in the region, most obviously Russia. Why is this important? Going by my own personal experiences in grade school and college, Russian history was covered as only one of many segments in the social studies curriculum -- almost as a matter of course, the stories of other peoples with the Russian Empire/ Soviet Union were lumped anonymously and casually in this -- peoples such as Ukrainians, Belorussians, etc. I am certain that I am not the only one in this regard --- since I have seen many Americans seeming to accept the Russian narrative that these are not legitimate groups in their own right, but more like "Little Russians", and the end result is a failure to understand why Ukrainians are now and have throughout history worked so hard to keep their own culture, language, and identity.
Being of Irish descent and familiary with Irish history, I found many aspects of Ukrainian history to be similar and parallel to Irish history. In both Irish and Ukrainian history, it is the story of a very independent and freedom loving people --- whose freedom and independence perhaps resulted in them not being unified enough to resist the encroachments and predations of their neighbors --- in Ireland's case, England -- in Ukraine's --- variously being caught between the rivalries of Russia, the Ottoman Empire, Poland, and Sweden. The result ultimately was the gradual subjugation by degrees of both by empires --- ironically at the same time in history, the 17th Century.
Interestingly, both nations also endured terrible famines at the behest of their conquerors-- Ireland in the Great Famine of the 1840s --- and Ukraine in the 1930s Holodomor, and then yet again in 1946-48.
Clearly, this book establishes the historical basis that Ukraine and Ukrainians are a distinct people, contrary to recent Russian arguments that they are not and never have been. I found the story of Ukraine a compelling read, learning much that I did not know about it.
Having said that, I do have some minor criticisms:
1. Perhaps because the author is sensitive to repeated Russian historical claims to be of the Kievan Rus, who were actually Ukrainian, he refers to the early Russian Empire as "Muscovy" and uses terms like "Muscovy Army" to refer to Russia and its Army. While I do understand that, I don't think it enhances clarity for the non-Ukrainian reader.
2. Curiously, in the discussion of post-Soviet Union Ukraine, no mention is made of the Budapest Memorandum. I think this should definitely have been in the history --- since in signing it, Ukraine is to this day -- and in the light of the recent attack upon it by Russia, probably will be forever -- the only nation having nuclear weapons that voluntarily gave them up to become non-nuclear. Ironically, the nation she gave them to is the one that is attacking her today, Russia.
Overall, however, an excellent book. I highly recommend this for anyone desiring to know more about Ukraine, its history, and its people.

Коротесенькі розділи, буквально по 2-4 сторінки на тему, тому не чекайте сильного занурення, але для поверхневого ознайомлення - прекрасно)
Також є англ.версія, раптом у вас є знайомі за кордоном, хто цікавиться нашою історією.

This book is a great starting point for someone who would like to get a better understanding about the country of Ukraine, its history, culture and traditions. Or in my case, it was a good refresher on the history of the country, after countless years have passed since my Ukrainian school education. I read it in parallel in both Ukrainian and in English, whereas the translated version unfortunately had countless shortcomings.
To start with the positive points - the book is highly illustrated, with images on every other page. This permits to dive deeper into the stories and get a better understanding of them. National clothing, old documents or paintings of old powerful rulers of nations - you will get to see all that and much more. An extremely detailed insight into every point of history is given, starting as far back as within the Prehistoric times. A really nuanced view is therefore created, comprehensively depicting how all the different nations of the world are intertwined.
For those who were always wondering about the Ukrainian language, how different it is from Russian and whether the "Russian Empire" was the base of everything "slavic" - you will have everything explained really clearly and will hopefully never have to ask that question again ;)
The Ukrainian language was for the first time recorded in Ruskaia Pravda, a collection of laws, and especially in household inscriptions and the charters of princes (the 10th until the 12th centuries). [...] In contrast, the Russian language was formed in the 12th to the 14th centuries [...]. p. 139, 141
Ukrainian was first recorded in print in 1490, soon after book printing was invented. In the first half of the 17th century hundreds of books were printed in Ukraine, while Muscovy had just a handful. p. 303
Nevertheless, the negative parts within the book took a bit of an upper hand for me unfortunately. The three main disappointing points for me were that:
- Too much focus was placed on the ancient times for my taste as I would have enjoyed reading more about the contemporary history of Ukraine. It's especially evident with the ending. The book was published in 2021 but the last chapters jump from Russia's attack on Crimea in 2014, to the presidential election in 2019, without providing any up-to-date details. Why not add on the latest state of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine?
- The editing of the translated English version was honestly... a disaster. So many mistakes and formatting errors have made it into print that it left me wondering what the editor was doing instead of taking care of the book? I have marked 17 instances where some kind of an error was made and it just didn't add to the professionalism of the publishing house. For the table of contents, a mistake was made with the page number of the third chapter, meaning that the rest of the page numbers were unusable and wrong for the next 210 pages of the book. My judgement goes so far that I would stay away from purchasing any translated work published by A-BA-BA-HA-LA-MA-HA. The Ukrainian version looked fine to me though, so these must be mistakes that have been brought in through the translation.
- Not too much of an effort was made with the style the book was written in. It unfortunately read like a school textbook, so that I literally had to force myself to read it until the very end. It was very dry and often felt like a listing of different dates and battles.
If you don't attribute too much importance to the points mentioned above, this book fulfills its purpose well in illustrating the spirit of the Ukrainian people. Their longing for justice, independence, human rights and the never ceasing pride in their nation. So regardless a couple of problems, it still stays a very educative book, that will leave you feeling more informed after its reading experience.

Автор особливо не заглиблюється в причини та наслідки, "Короткий курс.." - це більше збірка фактів, які треба знати про свою історію.
Книга хороша для тих, хто тільки починає ознайомлюватись з історією України. :)

One thing about Ukrainian history these days is that it is very controversial. There are a lot of disagreements on when Ukraine became a country, on whether Kyivskaya Rus' was Russia or Ukraine etc. So reading this book I was aware of the fact that this is one side. The author also likes to compare Ukraine and Russia through history and show inferiority of Russia (like for example that Stone Age in Russia ended 3000-5000 years after Ukraine, how Ukrainians started printing books a few centuries before Russia etc). It also always shows Ukraine as heroic and on the right side while Russia is always bad. For all I know this is the truth but this usually makes me careful on how much to believe due to author's bias. So I will read a few books before I decide on what is a fact or not.
At the same time this side makes more sense than the ridiculous arguments that Ukraine never existed before 1991. I also will agree that Kyivskaja Rus' was foremost Ukraine since the names of main figures were Ukrainian and most documents were printed in Ukrainian language.
Even with my concerns I really liked the book as it shows the history of Ukraine and what is now Ukrainian territory all the way from the Stone Age until Russia's attack on Crimea and causing the rebellion in Donbass (now this I know is true). It gives us a view on a very rich and eventful history and an outline of everything that went on. We also see the difficult history between Russian and Ukraine that gives an idea on today's events and how long ago this started. Of course it is all very short so if wanting to know more and have a better idea about any of the periods of time one should read more but it is a great starting point.

Як на мене, абсолютно не вичерпно подано основні події. Немає джерел інформації. Багато подій змальовано у чорно-білих тонах також без джерел та пояснення причин та аргументів різних сторін.
А ще скіфів та сарматів називають індоіранськими народами, які розмовляли індоіранськими мовами, хоча вони були іранські без жодного індо-. І ось цим «індоіранським» просякнуто багато всього.
Щоправда, про Євромайдан та війну з Росію написано хоч і небагато, але все ж без перегинів.
Читаю паралельно «Браму Європи» Плохія і там все значно виваженіше і справді виглядає професійно.

Доволі вичерпна історична хрестоматія для, наприклад, школярів. На кожному розвороті - зображення, розділи невеличкі. Не зважаючи на те, що опис подій викладено скорочено, можна сформувати доволі цілісне уявлення.

Так вийшло що я почала читати цю книгу за місяць до початку війни. Так як постійно відчувала прогалини в знаннях історії України. І насправді, мені максимально імпонувало те, що вона дуже русофобська, прям червоною ниткою по всій книзі. Короче, рекомендую.

Чудова книга. Гарно описано всі періоди історії України. Прекрасні ілюстрації, зручний формат. Дуже класний варіант на подарунок! Ця книга - основа з історії. Захотілось заглибитись ще ближче і вивчати більше нашу історію. Надихає.

Книга рівня дітей молодшого шкільного віку і це варто відобразити в назві. В тексті чимало помилок аж до переплутування портретів. Інформація подається в крайніх тонах.

Книга цікава по перше своїм оформленням, цікаві ілюстрації і короткі історичні відомості з найдавніших часів. Чудове видання АБАБАГАЛАМАГА, як і більшість кніжок. Але на цьому переваги якось і закінчуються. Та особливість з якою автор подає історію притримуючись україноцентричності доволі відштовхують від себе оповідання. Ніхто не заперечує що українці велика нація, але казати що з України пішло все розумне людство якось зухвало. Так і во всьому, автор намагається підвести історичні події в вигіднішому для українців боці. Скіфи, сармати на думку автора звичайно праслов’яни і т.ін.
Кілька тисячоліть української історія поданні «галопом по Європам», та подані у русі особливого місця української нації перед іншими слов’янськими народами. Багато з чим у висновках автора слід було б посперечатись, але все ж таки такий погляд трохи тішить. Не дивлячись на те що основні події української історії поданні здебільшого через кілька строк та абзаців, новітня історія України, події останніх років – Майдан та україно-російська війна подані доволі розгорнуто. Втішає ще велика кількість ілюстративного матеріалу.
Кілька тисячоліть української історія поданні «галопом по Європам», та подані у русі особливого місця української нації перед іншими слов’янськими народами. Багато з чим у висновках автора слід було б посперечатись, але все ж таки такий погляд трохи тішить. Не дивлячись на те що основні події української історії поданні здебільшого через кілька строк та абзаців, новітня історія України, події останніх років – Майдан та україно-російська війна подані доволі розгорнуто. Втішає ще велика кількість ілюстративного матеріалу.

Well I now know a lot more about Ukraine than I did before but that's not hard. I was particularly struck by how sophisticated the peoples of that area were in what for Western Europeans would have been pre-history. Many centuries BCE there were complex societies making intricate grave goods. The overriding theme of this book though is war after war after war, invasion after invasion. The author has a very clear intention which is to demonstrate that something one could call a Ukrainian state has existed for long before there was such a thing up north around Moscow and that barbaric people from everywhere else, but often Moscow, have tried to invade or otherwise destroy Ukraine. Confusingly the state based on Kyiv was called Rus' for centuries of the Middle Ages, while Muscovy was the name is the emerging entity further north. While there is no doubt this is a highly partisan account and that it improbably suggests that the Ukrainian origin state was freedom loving since deep history, it is a good primer for a Westerner who knew far too little about this region's history.

Чудова книга, для того щоб пройтися історією України, проте не заглиблюватись аж занадто сильно. Багато основних фактів, не дуже багато дат, розказані основні історичні події в максимально хронологічному порядку.
Великий плюс, що майже до кожного розділу є ілюстрації. Також сам формат книги дуже зручний, якщо ви раптом вирішите почитати історію в дорозі.
Єдине, що потрібно врахувати, книга видана в 2021 році і тому звичайно згадок про велику війну не буде, проте обов’язково буде про події 2014 року.
Читаємо історію і ловимо шалене Дежавю.

Щоб точно не ввести нікого в оману книгу можна назвати «Дуже короткий курс історії України». Тут не буде глибокого аналізу і посилань на джерела, але дивно цього очікувати від такого формату.
Дуже коротко і не нав'язливо від появи людини розумної на наших землях до початку російсько-української війни в 2014. Якщо щось цікавить глибше: потрібно звертатись до інших джерел самостійно.
Ідеально підійде для школярів та дорослих, які майже все забули чи багато чого не знали.

Ukraine's valiant, forever battle to be free and independent country should speak loud to anyone. It was a wonderful read, getting to know the vivid history of my wife's country. Many politicians and woke people speak righteous virtue of surviving and fighting for what is right, while people in Ukraine, from hundreds years ago - have been truly living it.

Мені сподобалося, як людині, котра тільки починає своє знайомство з історією України. Можна отримати базові знання та факти про історію, після чого заглиблюватися далі в теми, котрі зацікавили. Якщо ж ви вже маєте якийсь багаж знань — книга не для вас.

Назва книги говорить сама за себе — це справді короткий курс історії України. Розділи стислі, по 2–3 сторінки, з великою кількістю ілюстрацій. Історичні події подані дуже загально, згадано лише ключових діячів та основні дати. Це могло б здатись недоліком, але саме такий формат і заявлений — як стисла оглядова версія.
Я отримала від книги саме те, що шукала: короткий виклад головних подій і дат в історії України, що допоміг пригадати та систематизувати знання.

The title of Oleksandr Palii's book is A History of Ukraine: A Short Course, which indicates that it might be used in Ukraine as a school textbook. As is usual with histories written by Ukrainian writers, the author takes great pains to prove that Ukraine has been inhabited for millenia. This is to counter the Russian claim there was no independent Ukrainian civilization before Russia, and that Ukraine originated as a part of the Russian Empire. Therefore Russia is justified in using military force to re-incorporate its wayward province. If Ukraine existed before Russia, or its predecessor the Grand Duchy of Moscow, Russia's use of force to conquer Ukraine is an illegitimate aggression.
At 5" x 7" and 479 pages, A History of Ukraine is a conveniently sized book. Only half the pages are text. The other half are pictures or illustrations, but since the pages are so small the they are not reproduced well. The book is published and printed in Kyiv. It is a translation into English from the Ukrainian original. Unfortunately, there are many editing mistakes. For example, on page 34 the first sentence states, "...partofthem, theIndo-Iraniantribes remained in the steppes of southern Ukraine." Obviously, this should read, "...part of them, the Indo-Iranian tribes remained etc." This happens again on page 93: "...his description is anarche typical image of a Ukrainian Cossack...." which should be "an archetypical image...." The editor missed many mistakes like these, and it slows down the reader.

This is how far back the author goes to prove that Ukraine existed before Russia. Unfortunately, the rest of the presentation is flawed. Although each historical event or personage is presented in chronological order, they are presented as individual vignettes. The author does not show how one event or person influenced the next, or how one leader or king succeeded the other. Each event is presented in isolation. If one does not have a prior knowledge of Ukrainian history, this method of presentation is not very effective. Interested readers would be better served by reading The Gates of Europe: A History of Ukraine by Serhii Plokhy.
At 5" x 7" and 479 pages, A History of Ukraine is a conveniently sized book. Only half the pages are text. The other half are pictures or illustrations, but since the pages are so small the they are not reproduced well. The book is published and printed in Kyiv. It is a translation into English from the Ukrainian original. Unfortunately, there are many editing mistakes. For example, on page 34 the first sentence states, "...partofthem, theIndo-Iraniantribes remained in the steppes of southern Ukraine." Obviously, this should read, "...part of them, the Indo-Iranian tribes remained etc." This happens again on page 93: "...his description is anarche typical image of a Ukrainian Cossack...." which should be "an archetypical image...." The editor missed many mistakes like these, and it slows down the reader.

I was aware about certain aspects of Ukrainian history like the origins of Kiew-Rus, the Soviet induced famines that killed millions before and after WW2 ...
But learnt about aspects of how Russian empire, then Soviets and modern Russia has been systematically trying to eradicate Ukrainian culture and subjugate it's people was new to me.
Weird that I didn't come across this info via most of the modern history channels before.
Definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to properly understand the context to the modern Russian-Ukranian conflict.

Гарний посібник для тих хто погано вчився у школі, з чудовими картинками. Якщо у вас не має зайвого часу, щоб поцікавитись історією власної країни, то в самий раз. Можна після цього гуляти станцією метро Золоті Ворота і розповідати усім про князів на мозайках.
Наступний рівень розуміння - лекції Тімоті Снайдера, і ще більш занурення - історія України і кількох сусідніх держав трьома мовами на Вікіпедії.
Головний висновок - не народилось ще у світі 2 істориків, які б мали одну картину минулого. Однозначність є тільки в пропаганді (в школі).
