Polyamory: The New Relationship Norm?

Rate this book
Polyamory has been defined as being in a committed relationship with more than one person at the same time. And it is not just about sex. Polyamory is becoming more accepted and normalized today as we expand our vision of love, romance and personal fulfillment. It is possible to make a new lifestyle choice and live an exciting and passionate life of love, trust and integrity, with multiple partners.

People are polyamorous for many different reasons. Some reasons
•They want to have relationships with the people they love, even if they love more than one person.
•They value having their range of needs and desires met by more than one partner.
•They are involved in long-distance relationships and want intimacy while their partner is far away.
•They want the stability of long-term relationships as well as the excitement of new relationships.

Polyamory doesn’t mean an inability to commit. We are often taught to view commitment through the lens of sexual exclusivity, but a more nuanced view is commitment to building lasting relationships that meet the needs of the people involved. If those needs don’t include monogamy, then commitment doesn’t have to be tied to exclusivity.

Even if polyamory isn’t your thing, the mainstreaming of the poly community has started people talking about relationships, assumptions, and default expectations in ways that they haven’t before. Polyamory, like monogamy, isn’t for everyone; relationships don’t come in one-size-fits-all. The greatest value the discussion about polyamory has, is that it takes relationships away from default assumptions and into the realm of conscious choice
