Brilliant book! Explains thoroughly what the Bible is, how it got to its current format & how to approach it, as well as the historical & cultural context. Doesn't shy away from controversies or apparent contradictions, but is very even-hand/level-headed in its approach. Suitable for complete beginners & more experienced Bible students alike - "jargon" is explained but equally it doesn't "talk down" to the reader either. Useful whatever denomination you belong to, or whichever translation of the Bible you use. Plenty of maps, charts & diagrams plus beautiful illustrations & photos, so a real visual treat as well.

I have owned every previous edition of this handbook & whilst much of the material was therefore familiar, it has been brought up to date e.g. archaeological discoveries, findings from new scholarship/research. Maybe I'm just more aware of it, or it may actually be the case, but it also feels like this edition has got more to say about women & minorities and how they may see the Bible. Ditto re. people from other faiths.

Cannot recommend this highly enough!
