I can't stop crying. This story just breaks my heart. I hate that even today, in 2017, that people feel they have to hide who they love. Why does it matter who loves who??? It doesn't hurt you or me if Jill loves Jan instead of Jack, or if Jack loves John instead of Jill. IT SHOULDN'T MATTER who loves who!!! All that matters is that they love each other. I know this is a work of fiction, but you know things like this happened way too often back in the day, and it is sadly still happening- people hiding their true selves for fear of being hated and judged and demeaned because of who they love. It makes me so sad and angry that this is a reality for too many people. Why can't we all just live and let live?!? My heart hurts for Harry and Fred and all the many men and women like them. No one should have to live their life as a lie. When is society going to wake up?
Wow. I just finished, Sunlight by Seth Nicholas King... I'm motionless and raw. I don't know what I expecting going into it. But I don't think it was this heaviness and sense of duty... It's sad and poignant. It's a story that needed to be told. As you may know, I'm a huge M/m supporter. It's books like Sunlight make me proud. They are the reason why I push people to open their minds and hearts and read this genre... I stand on my soap box preaching, how it will change their perspective forever!! How love is love. The world needs more stories like this. To bring gay couples into the light. People need to see how far they have come, but also how far they still need to go when it comes to the LGBT community.
Sunlight is a short novella, but it packs a powerful punch. I read it in about an hour... Once I started I could not put it down. Get transporter to a time when being gay was basically a death sentence. Where living a lie was necessary and love did not conquer all....
My words can not do justice to the empowering, beautiful words written in this novella by Seth King. From the moment I started this novella I could not put it down and had to read in one sitting. This love story that passes through decades of the lives of Fred and Harry bring forth such strong emotions that will touch lives not just in the LGTBQ+ community, but in everyone that reads this story. This love story will leave the reader, like it did to me, feeling the story as well as these characters for a long time. All Seth King stories have always left a mark on my soul, but like Fred said "as long as the trees stood, so would their love", and it is true for how this story will stand strong in my heart. As Seth King states in this story "it hurt so beautifully ", this is how I felt from the devastatingly beautiful yet sad dedication to the last words of "some stories...we're lived to be told-others required moonlight". And Seth King does make one question how Fred and Harry would be, along with so many who are still afraid to express their love "if people had just let him step into the sunlight?" After reading the words of Seth King, and hoping so many others read these words, I'm hoping more are empowered to step into the sunlight. Thank you Seth for being brave enough to step in the sunlight for those who are not able to.
"what a luxury it must be, to fall in love with someone and actually get to love them." Seth- "Sunlight" had brought to surface all the emotions that I had hidden. Never have I wanted to break down and cry my eyes out. this was a story of fear and love. I truly wish that I could cry. The simple act of being able to release ones pent up emotions in a single drop would be a godsend. This is the story of a man who fell in love and allowed the fears of what society would think of him come in-between the man he loves and his future.
There are times when a story touches you in all the unexpected yet right places. I read that two of most favorite book people, Kindle Alexander and Eva LeNoir, said they loved it, you just one-click that story no questions asked. What I expected was a quiet evening read but what I got was something to think about a little harder than most.
Although this is the story of unrequited (not sure if that's the word I want but we'll go there) love between Harry and Fred, you can take any couple suffering hardships of prejudice and substitute in. Whether it is sexual identity, ethnicity or eye color, these two didn't want the 'risk' of being together. They held onto their friendship as best they thought possible. Mr King weaves his words masterfully so that the reader not only understands but feels the pull that he can't answer. Although it wasn't the ending I wanted, it was the best possible ending to have.
If you are looking for something that is about love and the possible impossibility of it, this is a brillant short read you are looking for. 5 heartfelt stars
This book has broken my heart. As a child of the forties, this is my story too! I have one special friend who I never admitted having feelings for. He haunts my dreams and now In our 70's and both married with wives and children and grand children I don't foresee ever changing our situation. But it still saddens me that he may have been going through the pain, agony and hurt that so many Free and Harry's faced.
Sunlight (2017) by Seth King is a brilliant short read.
The plot follows the secret love story of Fred Ecklund and Harry Faulkner. The couple fall in love in the 1960s and due to the discrimination against gay couples in society are forced to keep their feelings hidden. Set in the Deep South of America, the pair meet secretly in a park for three decades. In that time Harry marries a woman called Jody and they have a son and daughter together. In 2015, Fred witnesses Equal Marriage becoming legal. At this time, Harry is dead. He died from HIV/AIDs but it was covered up as a flu.
The chemistry between Fred and Harry is stunningly written. This is a short read as I said previously but so much is fitted in here by the author to show the deep depth of their feelings for each other. This is an absolutely gorgeous write. Heartbreaking and beautiful all rolled up in one. I think what hits the heart so much about a story like this is that this happened so many people through senseless bigotry and as the writer said at the end of this book, this bigotry is still present in the world. Thankfully not on the same scale but is still there. In the book, there is a lot of pain caused to people that never needed to be there. Pain especially to Fred and Harry but also to Jody and Harry’s and Jody’s daughter. The book also speaks about Conversion Therapy and how Jody was encouraging Harry to go. Reading that part was the part I went off Jody. The author really managed to blend the worlds of yesterday and today very well together and showed how society and religion often have a part to play in these situations.
The author wrote this book with honesty and passion. It is clearly written from the heart and I love writing like that. Because of that, this book leaves your heart raw with emotion and your energy refueled to not let discrimination slide under the radar and become somehow acceptable in any way in our world. Through the characters and the story, we are shown here that the consequences of allowing it to occur without challenge are too dangerous to peoples’ minds. Immensely thought-provoking. Excellent writing by an excellent author. This is the first book I have read by this writer but it certainly won’t be the last.
The book includes a lot about fear. I found that very interesting and important because fear is often what stops people from being happy. That fear instilled in someone by the world. Sometimes that fear is needed for safety, other times it can be all-consuming and more frightening than fighting through it and I think the author captured those different types of fear very well here. In addition, through the bigotry King also captures very well the fear of bigots from those different from themselves.
I adore this book. It is beautifully understated and shows the ordinariness of these two mens’ lives and yet the challenges they face in a world too scared or too hateful to understand. A must-read.
Step Into Sunshine I just read Sunlight by Seth Nicholas King and I feel the way I felt, years ago, when I watched the movie, Love Story, but worse, so much worse. This story, as shared by the author, is the true-to-life story of Fred and a million other men (and to a lesser extent women) of his time. It is a story that I know intimately although rarely discussed, rarely spoken. Initially I was overcome with a sense of hopelessness and overwhelming sorrow. I thought, ‘No you didn’t, Seth King. You didn’t rip open this wound.’ But he did. After I had a chance to recover a bit from the shock, I came to understand that Harry and Fred (from the book), and James, and Johnny and Danny (people from my life) have an important story to tell through the heart and soul of this author. After the tears, nasty gulping stuffy nose tears, I thought of my social media connections who live their truth and I know that it is possible, today. The cost was so damn high. The story begins on June 26, 2015 with the Supreme Court ruling that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. We join Fred at age 73 or so, as he reminisces about his ‘one’, “the boy with the midnight eyes”. The one he loved throughout his life from the time they met while Fred was in his final year of junior college, perhaps 20 years old. This is also a story of ‘different’ men, gay men, who disappeared or were found dead and it is the story of thousands of men who died, often with the stated cause never spoken or called ‘the flu’, cancer or some other disease without the stigma associated with AIDS. Fred fell in like with Henry during his final year of junior college and through a series of secretive meetings and walks in the woods and parks they both came to appreciate, understand that their attachment was much stronger than ‘like’. The danger of being identified as homosexual in the south was frightening and fear of what they knew could happen if they were discovered couldn’t be borne. Fred told himself that he was “content with aching for Harry..like the grass ached for the morning dew in the dawn.” Fred’s memories of his time with “his ONE” lived in his flesh and his bones. This is an epic LOVE STORY, not a romance novel and the HEA isn’t there, in the traditional, expected sense. Now that I can breathe again I choose to join Fred of this story and smile as he considered the effect of light and wondered “How different would his life have turned out if people had just let him step into the sunlight”. I will spend my afternoon watching videos of Yanis Marshall, Matthew Richardson Circus Arts, Fabrice Calmels and other talented, beautiful artists while I think of all of the wonderful men and women who I know are living in the sunshine!
Once again Seth King uses forbidden love and sheds light upon how society has driven people to hide their true selves and the consequences of doing so. Sunlight documents the relationship between Harry and Fred, two college students that meet during the turbulent 1960s. What begins as a friendship and shared walks in a local park becomes a romantic relationship that spans decades and forces the two of them to live their lives holding onto the secret of what they really mean to each other. Without being able to publicly display their affections both men end up leading lives that lack true fulfillment. The message that this book reveals to its readers is powerful and one that must be shared if there is to be any progress in the acceptance of love in its different forms. However, at the end of the book I still did not feel that I knew either of these characters very well. I felt in many places that more glimpses into the minds of these two tortured souls would have given their story greater depth. I simply found myself wanting more. The most emotional part of the book for me was at the very end when the only evidence of their love is discovered. Seth King is not afraid to take chances with his novels often bringing social issues, both past and present, to the forefront. This story turns a spotlight on how incapable society was of dealing with homosexuality and the stigma of AIDS. My heart definitely ached for Fred and Harry and for all those who still live with the fear of the consequences when their life choices don’t conform to what society considers "normal".
I don't know what to say. If you've read the reviews I've written for Seth King before, then you'd know that I love his words. That they touch me on a level that most don't. And it's taken a long time for me to figure out how to write words to help describe this book. And yet, I still can't. Sunlight is a story of love. Of love everyone wants, but so few get. That is really all I can say. Harry and Fred are in an impossible situation during a dangerous time, and it's a harsh reminder of what happens to people who aren't allowed to love. God, Seth King broke me. He owns my soul and with every word he writes he breaks me a little more. But at the same time, he fills me. Even when I have tears running down my face and my heart is in a million tiny pieces. I know how true, how relevant his words are, and I feel honored to be able to read them. Sunlight will take you through a dark time in the life of two people who just wanted to love each other. It will hurt. It will make you hate the world we live in. But at the same time you will love it because it is beautiful and honest. I can't wait for the next heartbreakingly beautiful book Seth has coming our way.
Sunlight by Seth King is a novella about the dark days in the South when being locked in the closet was the way to stay alive, period. Fred and Harry’s story takes place in the years before anyone much less two black men could be together. I was given this book and I am beyond effected by the story Seth tells. Seth King got me; Sobs & I had to find someone to tell about "Sunlight" even though they had not read it. I cried to the point I had to make myself stop reading and go blow my Nose. Oh, my goodness, to have lived through those times in the South; quiet and hiding and scared of the world & the "flu" (what HIV was referred to early on). The sunlight would have been amazing compared to the darkness of that time. This is heartbreaking and renewing in the sunlight You, Seth King, are amazing, I am so glad I found you. Again, we get to see the beauty in Seth King’s wordsmith tools about a period in time He never lived in (He is just 28 years old) -- you still touch my soul with your stories and Sunlight is no exception. Thanks Seth King & Good Writing
*****Five Stars are not enough***** Sunlight is about Fred and Harry who meet in the 1960’s in the Deep South of America, and they fall in love. A love they must keep secret from the world during a time where that love being discovered means risking their lives. Their love survives, in secret, over many decades. This, like most Seth King books, will bring you to tears. Once I finished reading it, I just sat, with tears streaming down my face, my heart breaking for these two men, and all those like them who have had to hide their truth from the world for too long. Once again Seth takes the reader on a discovery of LGBTQI issues in such a way that we don’t even realise it is a life lesson. Seth puts so much of himself into his stories, he has a beautiful soul and I am so thankful Seth shares his stories with us and that the LGBTQI community has such a remarkable advocate. Sunlight is devastatingly, heartbreakingly beautiful. Seth King’s brilliance as a wordsmith continues to shine with this book.
My heart. I think I've said that about every single book Seth King has written but there is just something so soul crushing about Sunlight. This book is so important and if I had a disposable income I would buy a copy for everyone I knew and a few people I don't. The subject matter, the guts of this gorgeous story, touched upon here is so relevant in today's world even with all the progress. Harry and Fred's story is profound and timeless and necessary.
GAH!!! Seth King I don't know if I want to hug you or shake you. Probably a bit of both. You just ripped my heart to bits and didn't put it back together again and, surprisingly, I'm ok with that. Because life is that way. It changes you. Much like Harry and Fred's love changed them. And you don't always recover from it's trials. They were never whole again either. . But the one thing time and life and society and circumstance could never take away was the love. And that is that.
This was such a bittersweet and so heartbreaking story. It was a bit short but the emotion in the few words it had was so strong that it was impossible to read it and not care about the main characters.
There was so much love and sorrow in it. I loved both main characters, even though I have a few issues with the decisions made by one of them, but I guess that was part of the charm, not having perfect characters, understanding that not every character in a book is going to be a perfect prince charming. I guess that’s one of the reason I liked the book, because those flaws each of them had made them perfect and made the story more realistic.
I have to warn anyone with the intention of reading it, prepare tissues because this is a beautiful story, but is also full of pain. Definitely recommend it to any reader.
Seth King proves once again, that he is one of the most talented authors of our time. It's the same with every book I read of his. I'm hooked from the first word until the very last word, he has me thinking about the subject for a long time afterwards and he has this knack of bringing out all the emotions in his books and Sunlight was just as spectacular as his other work. I devoured this book the minute it hit my kindle and these characters are still on my mind. What they went through, the love they had for each other and mostly, just how hard it was all those years ago. Sunlight is a must read for everyone. I promise, you won't be the same after reading this beautiful, yet sometimes, heartbreaking story. 5 wonderful stars!
After being surrounded by the same love stories, this book is just what I needed! With a captivating dialect, and flawed characters that you fall for with each turn of the page, is just the tip of the iceberg of what makes this story so moving. It's a love that should be written about more. It's real and it's raw and it hurts. Love comes in all shapes and sizes, and Seth King conveys that in the most beautiful and eloquent of ways.
"What a luxury it must be, to fall in love with someone and actually get to love them."
"Some stories, she knew, were lived to be told – but others required moonlight."
A beautifully written novella about a time when acceptance of homosexuality caused so many to fear for their lives. Having lived part of this time...and in fear myself...I can relate to Harry and Fred's story. It's sad that two human beings could not love each other openly and happily in a world that shouted...be happy. Seth's words evoke so many feelings and emotions for me at the loss of so many friends due to hate, fear, non-acceptance and eventually that flu...that evil disease that took so many beautiful people. I'm not sure if I should thank Seth or curse him for bringing me back there...but in the end...a gorgeous book that was truly about love!
What a beautifully written novella. This was a poignant, heart wrenching story that needed to be told and will stay with you a long time I have no doubt. It brings to the forefront man's inhumanity to man and quite frankly made me want to vomit. When will it ever be that live and let live is our motto instead of this blatant bigotry and discrimination. I read this non-stop from start to finish, I just couldn't put it down. Don't get fooled by the fact this is a novella. Every word counts in this very profound story and hopefully lessons will be learned. Huge kudos to this wonderful author.
This story was a wonderful, intense, sad poem. I cried my eyes out for Harry and Fred and their lives never being what they wanted because of society's narrow minded views.
King writing is filled with emotions and colours, even at the darkest moments in this story.
I've never, ever cried so hard before when reading a story and I think everyone should read this story because it is important to understand that we are all different and we should be able to accept the diversities in humans. But most important: LOVE IS LOVE ❤️ In any shape or form.
Touching little novella from Seth, which opens with the historic day in 2015 when the US Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage was legal.
Harry and Fred meet in the 1950's in Northern Florida, both deeply in the closet as an absolute necessity due to the possibility of being beaten up or worse. Harry gets on with his life and even makes the decision to marry to avoid further suspicion, Fred however can't do that - he loves Harry too much to even pretend to love a woman, so he's alone when Harry's not around...sooo alone, and has too much time on his hands to brood over what can never be. Enjoy!! 4 stars from me.
A passionately written piece that I could tell stemmed from a raw and sobering acceptance of Southern culture and the oppression that members of the LGBT community continue to face within it. As well, this is a beautiful celebration of the courage of those who are pursuant to connect with one another despite these fatal risks.
WOW! This story had a "Brokeback Mountain" feel to it with how Fred & Harry have to sneak about in order to spend time together. It was such a beautiful, amazing, heartbreaking story about how ignorant people were ( and still can be), where homosexuality is concerned. There was a lot of emotion in this story and I seriously could NOT stop reading. Absolutely fantastic!
You are such an amazing writer and your words are so real that I'm still sobbing. I hope that your messages of love and acceptance reach even just one person that didn't understand. Thank you for such an amazingly sad story of love.
Seth never ceases to amaze me! Again he has written an emotional thought provoking book. I finished reading and just felt sad. How many Fred and Harrys are out there? This might be fiction but the story is real. Sad but true story of the word we live in.
It's a world that so many don't know about...and it is so disheartening to know that human beings still live in fear just because of who they love. I'm so glad Seth put these words out for everyone to see. I loved this story so much.
What an amazing story. So sad and true. I wish we lived in a world where everyone could live freely and be who they want to be without being made to feel like it's wrong. Thank you for your beautiful words.
The love that is Harry and Fred is told so poignantly by Seth King. In 2017 we like to think that we are more tolerant and accepting of the LGBTQ community when we really have such a long way to go. Thank you for this incredible reminder Seth!
Seth King is a talented author and extremely skilled in tearing your heart out. Read the story of two people, very much in love, but were not allowed to be. Its 2019, and this still happens. This should not be. Save the world, people.
