I was born and raised in the beautiful historic market town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, where I live still with my kid, one crazy cat and a succession of even crazier lodgers. I'm a multi-genre author which basically means I write whatever story floats into my head and worry about what genre it fits into afterwards. So far, I have written in contemporary fiction, romantic suspense, YA fantasy, folklore fantasy, sci-fi, short stories, poetry, and even a fabulous steampunk retelling of the Snow White story.
I have been writing stories and poems since I could first pick up a pen, and I promise there are many more books in the pipeline. I write the kind of books that I like to read myself. Books I can escape into and that make me laugh, cry and really connect with the characters. I also like my books to have a very satisfying ending, where all is explained and no string is left untied, well, not unless I'm planning a sequel that is.

Becoming Lili, a contemporary coming-of-age story, cleverly growing into a contemporary romance. It is wonderfully set against a backdrop of the 1990s, set in a rural Suffolk market town. The author has the perfect ability to keep the characters modern and current but at the same time true to their era, it certainly doesn't feel dated.
Phyllis, a downtrodden, bullied child, with equally neglected home life. Her only solace comes in the form of her grandmother and namesake. As her pitiful life goes from bad to even worse, Phyllis is faced with an alternate life ahead of her, one she could only dream of, and one that will lead her to becoming Lili.
The author presents us with a myriad of characters to love as well as some you just love to loathe. Becoming Lili is brimming with friendship, love, money, lavish parties, and some fabulous sexy bits - tastefully and tactfully written - all adding to its multifaceted plot.
As the book brings us through the decade, Lili is faced with the choice of fulfilling her own needs and desires or saving others from her own fate and pitiful childhood.
Beautiful written, Becoming Lili is a great wedge of a book, giving us chapter after chapter of delight, but never weighing us down, a true blessing for those who love to delve deep barely coming up for air! And a mark of a truly talented writer of contemporary fiction.
Of all my books, Becoming Lili - book one of The Perennial Trilogy - is the one most personal to me. A shy and sensitive child, I had a difficult time at school. For four, very long, years, I was the victim of severe bullying. Unless you've experienced it yourself, you cannot know what this does to a child, how it undermines everything you are and warps the person you become.
Lili, or rather Phyllis - as she is at the beginning of the novel - is to some extent, me. Lonely and severely bullied, Phyllis longs for escape from the awfulness of her life. Her dream of being at the centre of a circle of loving friends, a seemingly impossible wish.
Then Phyllis is given an amazing opportunity, a chance to change, to become Lili, to have everything she's ever dreamed of, to be the person she most admires. If only she has the courage to grasp life by the throat and make it hers.
Becoming Lili is a big book, 500 pages, but I've been told it's a quick and easy read, rather in the style of Jilly Cooper. Starting out as a coming of age, ugly duckling, tale it matures - as does Lili - into a touching love story and friendship novel, as Lili gathers other lame ducks around her, the whole becoming so much more than the sum of their parts. Packed full of amazing characters, it's a multi-stranded novel, with sub-plots and backstories twisting and twining through the main narrative, each character standing out in their own right.
There's Jake. Gorgeous, rugged and strong, he's everything Lili's ever dreamed of, the only drawback is he's married - to Vivienne. A bitchy Hollywood film star, she is vain, shallow and selfish, and she'll do anything to make sure Jake stays her property.
Greg - a handsome, talented, young artist, he'd like nothing better than to make Lili his muse - permanently.
Lindy - tough, feisty and outspoken, she is desperate to kick off the chains of her upbringing. Hiding scars of her own, she'll do whatever it takes to keep the bright light that is Lili in her life.
And of course, there's Conrad, an outrageously gay, acclaimed interior designer, his kindness and vision make him the perfect choice to be Phyllis's Pygmalion, guiding her on her path to Becoming Lili.
All these characters and many more, make up the landscape of the novel. I love them. Each and every single one. Well, maybe not Vivienne ... oh, who am I kidding, I love her best of all, she's so unashamedly nasty.
The book is based in the 1990s, a vibrant and energetic era when Britpop ruled the world, and it was a great time to be young and beautiful.
For those of you who've already read The Book of Eve, look out when reading Lili, I may have left a couple of easter eggs in there for you to find. I really hope you enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it, and fall in love with the characters the way I did - Conrad rocks - and I would love your comments and thoughts.
Unloved and unwanted by her own parents and bullied mercilessly at school, Phyllis' only real comfort is her grandma. When her grandma passes away, she has no one left to love her. You'd have to be a cold monster not to feel at least a little protective of her! I just wanted to give her all of the hugs and make her all of the hot chocolate <3 I found it easy to connect with her, and was absolutely thrilled when she met Amy and prayed that their friendship would last!
Her transformation from Phyllis into Lili was inspiring and wonderful to follow. I didn't expect it to happen so soon, but I loved seeing how she influenced her new friends in much the same way that one pretty mystery lady influenced her one fateful day in the supermarket. Seeing Lili have such a positive affect on her own friends was fantastic to see, and when Lindy reflected on that it felt like Lili's story had come full circle. In fact, my favourite scene is at the end when Lili is in the supermarket and feels overcome by a deja vu she can't explain. It was such an important moment in her life, and that Blake included it was a genius move!
"Boris is another one of Lili's lame ducks," continued Kevin.
"Lame ducks?" Martin frowned.
"Lili collects strays," explained Kevin. "Boris, Lindy, You, Amy and myself, we're all strays, misfits, broken biscuits in some way. Lili unites us all into something much more."
Lili has suffered, and knows how horrible human beings can be to each other. Because of this she is the most caring and understanding girl who surrounds herself with others who need the same love she craved before she moved out from her parents' home (who neither noticed nor cared, by the way).
Lili comes across as incredible believable, and her pain made it easy to root for her. While I questioned her judgement several times, like how quickly she trusted Conrad, I know it's only because she desperately needed a friend to accept her for who she was, even when she didn't know herself. The message is clear - it doesn't matter where you come from or the circumstances under which you were raised; if you want to be a better person, it's in your own power to turn yourself into anything you want. It might not be easy, but it'll be so worthwhile! Oddly enough, it also made me want to get a make-over - make-up, hair, clothes, the whole lot. I'm not a girly girl, so when I say that's odd... It's odd, friends.
One thing that caught me off guard were the erotic scenes near the end. I wasn't expecting that kind of plot, which makes this book unsuitable for younger audiences - which is a shame because I think it could have been really empowering to young girls struggling with their own confidence.
The one thing I struggled with was the omniscient POV. Narrators who know everything and switch easily between characters mid-paragraph confuse me too much, and it didn't work for me here. I'm all for multiple POVs, but not several in one chapter, please.
If you're looking for a book that'll make you feel like you can do anything if you just set your mind to it no matter you're background, I urge you to read this one!
This is a book that delivers. It delivers hope, that you can survive hardship and find freedom, happiness, joy. That you can transform yourself and become who and what you long to be, despite what the world tells you is your place. It is a book that shows how it is possible, to open your heart, trust again, welcome people in, even after you've been put through so much, such hardship, at a tender, formative age. It is a book that screams with the belief there's a chance to keep your faith in humanity, at all times, even through severe heartache. And it's a book that speaks of how one true, pure, candid heart can touch the lives of others and inspire them to become the better version of themselves, achieve the spark that was always inside them, but that they hid under the covers of fear and resignation. Let that jeart touch yours, too.
This wonderful novel is a must read! Julia Blake has crafted a story, not only rich in details, but equally rich in the characters you wish were your friends. The story begins as a coming of age story of a lonely young girl neglected by her self-obsessed parents, and who suffered unimaginable bullying at school. The one constant good thing in the girl’s life was her grandmother who gave her the love she so desperately needed. When her grandmother dies, she bequeaths her considerable fortune and her beautiful old home to her granddaughter. This is the catalyst that jump starts the girl on her road to transformation.
However, it would take more than money for this lonely girl to begin to believe in herself. It was a vision, a moment out of time, that Phyllis glimpsed what her future self could be. From that moment on, she steadfastly went about changing herself into the vision she’d glimpsed. And that future girl’s name was Lili. Lili was elegant, self-assured and surrounded by dear friends.
Her own lonely, beleaguered past filled the new Lili with insight into others’ desires and loneliness. Like a magnet, Lili drew these disparate people to her. Their problems, loves and trials became hers. And they became devoted to her. They became the family she never had.
One night, at an engagement party for a friend, Lili meets a man who she instantly feels is the love of her life. She is crushed to find him already married. Lili has never had a boyfriend, never been in love, yet she loves this man with a woman’s heart. She tried to forget him, though time and circumstance brought them together again and again. Their mutual attraction binds them, yet Lili refuses to be the catalyst that destroys a marriage, even a marriage that is hollow and full of lies.
This is a remarkable story of love and sacrifice; a story of friends who become a family; a story of love lost and found again. This is the kind of story that resonates long after the last word is read. I totally fell in love with this wonderful novel. It's the kind of novel you will read again and again.
Phyllis endures the worst of childhoods. Unwanted by her parents, bullied, insulted and floundering, her only light is her grandmother, whose early death plunges her back into the nightmare.
Coming into an inheritance that gives her the escape she longs for, she finds herself still held prisoner by the past and raw self doubt, until a chance encounter changes everything.
Reinventing herself as Lili, she gathers around her an eclectic band of misfits, forming the family she's always longed for. And then there's romance...
Becoming Lili begins by thrusting the suffering Phyllis straight into the heart of the reader, forming a connection that lasts until the perfectly circular ending. The band of misfits are cleverly drawn and entertainingly written to make us care about them all and the poisonous Vivienne is great fun.
There are sexy elements that are not out of place, but set the novel as adult romance.
Fun, engaging and moving. A modern style Cinderella, Ugly Duckling. A sequel, Chaining Daisy, is to follow.
Poor Phyllis Goodwin is an only child of unloving, neglectful parents who deem her ugly and unintelligent. She’s bullied at school. A near-fatal circumstance, a tragedy, and a chance encounter with a complete stranger at a deli profoundly affect her life in this coming-of-age, metamorphosis where an ugly duckling transforms into a graceful swan—becoming Lili.
This most becoming story becomes so due to the author’s storytelling prowess in creating a cast of fully-fleshed characters, all of whom serve a higher purpose in the novel. The dialog between them is refreshingly witty and realistic. Ms. Blake also interweaves intricate plot threads which are integral to the entire story. There were many heart-stopping moments along this literary journey as the author toyed with the reader.
A most becoming story for many reasons, I highly recommend such a thoroughly engaging book.
Heartbreak, friendship, love and redemption -- As a teacher, I’m very sensitive to the needs of children and reading the story of Phyllis, I couldn’t help but cringe. Her mother and father belie her existence. I wanted to jump into the novel and wring their necks; seriously. As a reader, mother and teacher, I felt the sincerest sympathy for Phyllis, just because her parents refused to show her any ounce of love or defend her when she was bullied at school. The author does an outstanding job on character development and when I found out this was actually a true story, I teared up. Our world is full of school’s where kids are bullied, but through teachers and other staff, as well as parents, kids usually seek solace and and end somewhere. But not for poor Phyllis. It’s not until there’s a tragic accident and she moves in with her grandmother that she’s able to heal and grow.
Throughout the rest of the story, we meet Amy and other characters that support Phyllis’s transformation into Lili! She truly finds friendship, love and develops into a wonderful young woman. She finds love, ventures off through life, attending lavish parties and finds her sensuality. Julia Blake tastefully allows Phyllis to explore her sexuality and invites the reader through her descriptions. I must say I blushed several times. Oh Lili.
Lili finds love, but it’s an unexpected love, she’s not sure she deserves, but in the end she confronts her demons-- her parents and realizes she’s been dead to them this whole time.
The storyline, characters and plot unfold quickly, you’ll need some tissues and get ready for your emotions to ride the rollercoaster, as Lily embraces herself, determined to be the best mother and young woman a girl can be.
Becoming Lili is an addictive read. I had to keep going until the end. The author Blake has mastered the art of creating such wonderful, believable characters and I will certainly move straight on to the next book.
Phyliss is a desperately lonely and unloved, unwanted child. Her parents only have eyes for each other and she remains in the background, shut out and unobserved. Things don't get any better for her at school, bullied and ridiculed constantly for her looks, demeanor, appearance. Life sucks for Phyliss in every way possible. When she stumbles across her parents making love on the sofa, unaware their daughter has been snowed off from school, everything changes.
The young girl hears things no child should hear from her mother's mouth as soon as her parents have finished having sex. Realising exactly how much she is despised, she pulls her coat and shoes back on and walks miles in the snow to her grandmother's house. The only person in the world who shows her love and affection.
Fast forwarding a few years and not spoiling the story, something happens to Phyliss one day, while out grocery shopping she sees the woman she wants to be. A beautiful vision who is everything Phyliss isn't, talking on her phone. The woman's name is Lili and from that moment on her future and that of everyone she meets and befriends will all change.
A totally addictive story-line from start to finish. Becoming Lili is a must read and I have found myself a bunch of new imaginary friends whose lives I simply must follow! Some adult content.
From the start, I was completely sucked in by Lili’s story. At various times throughout the novel, I wanted to shield her from the realities of her life, applaud her for her triumphs, and all around be her friend.
This is a testament to Blake’s ability to create multifaceted characters that feel real. Ones you grow to care about, grieve with, laugh with and just wish really existed in this world. Through the story, I found I had been forming my own alliances, whether I realized it or not. And the ending! It was completely unexpected yet fitting. A moment that brought the story full circle in a quiet, unassuming way that left me with all the feels.
I am so looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series and discovering what happens to the characters I’ve already grown to adore.
I loved Becoming Lili, the story of a young girl unloved and neglected by her parents and bullied by her schoolmates—a young girl who chooses to reinvent herself and travel the long and brave journey alone towards realizing a better future for herself. Becoming Lili is an epic tale of an ugly duckling who ultimately lives out her wildest wishes and her most secret of dreams come true.
Julia Blake's writing is beautiful and thoughtful, not only in the way she crafts the details but also in how she weaves the reader through the characters' lives, colorful characters she brings to life on the page. I found myself falling in love with and rooting for them throughout each of their life struggles. And I adored how despite Lili's challenging and sorrowful past, she brought people of all walks of life together, nurtured them with kindness and empathy, opened their eyes to their heart’s desires, and helped light the way towards them living out their destiny. I particularly enjoyed how Blake connected the ending to the beginning, with a poignant deja vu, bringing Lili full circle showing how far she'd come and how with hope, love, and kindness, happiness will prevail.
I look forward to reading Blake’s second book in the Perennials Trilogy, Chaining Daisy, to learn what happens to Lili and her friends, characters whose lives I've become fully immersed in—I can't wait to see where they all end up! Becoming Lili is a beautiful story of hope, self-discovery, love, sacrifice, friendship, and family—an inspirational tale that will touch your heart. Unputdownable!
Becoming Lili is a realistic glimpse into the long-lasting effects of bullying and one brave young woman's journey to finding herself and breaking free of the chains that bound her. Blake, with her penchant for stringing words together in an elegant and beautiful manner, had me laughing out loud in one moment and shedding tears in the next. The characters are realistic and well-developed, to the point you can't help buy love them or loathe them. It's an epic tale that leads you through twists and turns to a wonderfully surprising ending. It's a long read, but I absolutely loved it. Now I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series - Chaining Daisy.
I was quickly drawn into Phyllis’ world within the first three paragraphs. I was captured by the end of the first chapter. Phyllis was an unwanted and unloved child except by one, her grandmother. That, unexpectedly ends much too soon. It’s no wonder Phyllis wanted to be someone else. All of this in the first chapter.
Phyllis’ journey of self discovery, growth and acceptance begins years later with a chance meeting at a grocery mart...or was it more than just mere chance? I read as Phyllis opened her eyes and brain to the possibilities of something more and Lili was born. I followed Lili through her journey of becoming... becoming the woman she never hoped to be but only dreamt to be. This journey of hers is jam packed full of everything; friendship, fear, uncertainty, dismay, disappointment, acceptance, growth, trust and love.
The characters are introduced one at a time and each are developed gradually, much like real life. All of these secondary characters are rich, colorful and memorable but one stands out. I love Conrad Stevens! What a whirlwind and a breath of fresh air at the same time! I know that appears to be a bit of a contradiction but wait till you meet him! “He’d opened a window...had let the sunlight of possibilities flood in.” I felt it... so did Lili. Each character has their own story. Every single character added another layer to the story which sent my brain and my heart racing.
Becoming Lili is a phenomenal book with layers upon layers. Authors spend a lot of time and effort writing and honing their book; but when they include artistic details, well...its these details which really set the book apart from the pack of other books, adding to the enjoyment of the reader. That is the icing on the cake. THIS is one of those books.
Becoming Lili, by Julia Blake, is not just another “coming of age” tale. It is a story about transformation. Lili wasn’t always Lili. She started out as Phyllis. What a childhood this child had. Your heart will break. Her childhood was one of lovelessness and neglect, but not in the usual way. She was not beaten, not starved, but her parents wronged her terribly in an altogether different way. The story of her childhood will engage you immediately. You have never seen parents quite like this. It is a truly mind-blowing psychological portrait of a family that sets this story in motion. You will fall in love with child Phyllis, teenage Phyllis and then you will watch her, feel her, root for her to become Lili! This is such an uplifting book. There is still plenty of obstacles and this is not a story of one happy event after another as she achieves her admirable adulthood. There is more loss to come, hearts are broken, dear friends are made, each with their own troubles and heartaches, much is learned and much is accomplished. But Lili is center stage in this first book in the author’s Perennials Trilogy. Phyllis becoming Lili: I believe Lili will go down as one of the best loved female characters in modern literature. You will find joy in watching her blossom and care for her deeply. Many of the other characters in this book become stories in and of themselves and you will want to know more about all of them too. Daisy is one of them. She is barely out of her teens and marries the love of her life, an older man; but there is a sense that not all is right. So here comes book two: Chaining Daisy. I am reading that now and enjoying it every bit as much as the first. These books are so enjoyable; like soap opera becoming literature! They have the drama, but it is so classy, you will drink in every word. The characters, learn, grow, hurt, heal and feel real. Don’t miss either of these books.
Who doesn’t love an ugly duckling turned beautiful swan tale? From the first pages of Becoming Lili, I ached for the transformation of downtrodden and abused Phyllis who suffers deeply at the hands of her parents and classmates. From the very start it appears the universe is not on her side, with any glimmer of hope quickly snatched away, leaving her entire situation appearing beyond help. Phyllis’s metamorphosis does eventually come however, and from here, her life gradually reforms as she becomes Lili.
Julia Blake is a master in the art of creating characters with depth, and Lili and her friends are no exception. Becoming Lili is tale that extols the power of hope and friendship, with a collection of characters I’d wish to know in real life. Spanning time, we watch Lili and her friends mature as they negotiate their way through relationships, jobs, heartache and adulthood. It’s impossible to pick favourites, but the brooding Jake trapped in a loveless marriage, the flamboyant and endearing Conrad and Lili herself of course, stuck out for me. I found this a hard book to put down. Although it moves at an easy pace, the lives of the characters sucked me right in and with the theme of transformation, I wanted them all to find their happy ending. Spanning the 90’s, Becoming Lili unfolds gently with no sense of urgency in telling Lili’s tale. Instead, Blake wants us to get to know each character, and ensures this happens which meant I reached the closing chapter with reluctance to say goodbye. The good news is that the sequel, Chaining Daisy is now released, so farewells were short lived.
Anyone who has read Blake’s work will know she is a talented author, but if this is your first introduction to her books, you won’t be disappointed.
Becoming Lili is an entertaining and heartwarming story of a lonely and plain girl who grows into her beauty and charm with the help of a very special friend, and the friends she makes along the way. A chance encounter in a store sets everything in motion. You can't help but love Lili, and her journey of self-discovery is beautifully written by Blake. The characters come alive and become your friends along with Lili. Conrad is one of the most delightful characters I've ever met in a book and his positive influence on Lili is a joy to experience. Blake writes excellent dialogue, and it feels as though you're listening in on exchanges between the group of friends that Lili has taken under her wing. I love this book. It made me smile so often while reading it, and for me, that's a wonderful thing. I highly recommend this one and look forward to the sequel.
Becoming Lili was everything I never knew I needed. At the beginning of a new year after surviving a literal pandemic, I needed hope. I needed proof that we could all reinvent ourselves no matter the circumstances. This is where Lili comes in.
The story opens with Phyllis. A bullied ugly duckling who was unloved by her parents and classmates. The only person who truly carried about her was her grandmother. When her grandmother passes away she leaves behind a great fortune that will help Phyllis reinvent herself. But first, she has to survive high school.
Five stars aren't enough. I was captivated by Lili's journey and metamorphosis. I fell in love with each friend, felt every heartache, and had goosebumps for days after reading the last pages. Beautiful story!
Becoming Lili is a well woven tale. It begins with a girl who lives in an unloving home. At school she is bullied. Everywhere she goes she experiences cruelty. Then a turn of events gives her the opportunity to change her life. It takes a while for her to transform. Eventually she succeeds and becomes a beautiful young woman inside and out. She gets what she’s always dreamed of friends, love, and happiness. There are some interesting twists and turns along the way and a surprising gesture of love at the end.
I truly loved the story. Julia Blake is very talented at building the characters and their surroundings giving the story much depth.
After a lifetime of being neglected and rejected by her parents, eighteen year old Lili remakes herself, adopting an eclectic group of friends to become the family she craves. Reading Becoming Lili, I felt like I was one of them - living the young, single life (with all the ups and downs that entails) while in the process of self discovery. Blake seamlessly weaves heartbreak and triumph into an engaging tale.
The first part of Julia Blake's Perennials Trilogy tells the story of Lili and how she transforms from a bullied, unloved child into a woman in control of her own life. A great read for lovers of stories featuring strong female characters and especially if you were around in the nineties. This book provides a great trip down memory lane, showing how the fashions, music and popular culture of the time act as a backdrop to Lili's journey.
I loved this story. It draws you in and is so easy to read. You can't help but root for Lili and all her friends to succeed. I loved the 90's setting, all the small details, which took me back to my teenage years. In the end this is a fairytale coming of age and then romance, with a little bit of steam near the end!
It's a heart warming book and I would recommend it absolutely!
Some books are so rich and decadent they demand to be savored—and boy, did I savor this book! I took longer to read this book than any book I’ve ever read… a year and a half! Yes, it’s a thick book, approaching 500 pages, but the story is so compelling and the pacing so swift, you could easily devour it in a few days. But I wanted to climb inside this story and stay for a while, so I took my time. So much time, that the worn cover bears the teeth marks of my beloved kitty Maeby, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge almost ten months ago. This book came with me on seven trips to Colorado, saw me through the loss of my mom, and was a constant reminder that despite the sometimes ugliness of life, beauty always prevails.
And that’s what this book was at its heart, not just an Ugly Duckling tale, but a modern Austen-esque exploration of life and the dichotomy between ugliness and beauty. More importantly, it examines what it means to be ugly and beautiful, illustrating just how deceptive either one can be, hiding the truth of what’s inside. Beautiful people can have ugly souls, people who aren’t conventionally beautiful can possess dazzling hearts, and loveliness can be found in even the bleakest of situations.
I loved this book and for months have feared reaching its inevitable end, but what an ending it was, full of unexpected twists and stirring moments that will stay with you long after you close the book. And the best part is, this fabulous world continues in its sequel, Chaining Daisy. I can’t wait to fall into it for many, many months!
Becoming Lili is a beautifully written coming-of-age novel that most of us can relate to. The key elements of a fairytale weave their way through the prose, which successfully mix the heady whirl of hope and pleasure with strong moral undercurrents.
We begin by following Phyllis through her torturous teen years, unloved and alone, through to a chance encounter that provides her with a glimpse of what life could be. The author cleverly positions us so that we feel the intensity of every knock and set back; within a couple of chapters you are firmly routing for this girl to find the sense of belonging that she so keenly craves.
At a time of uncertainty, a chance encounter provides a glimpse of what her life could be. All through the novel she is faced with choices and although a plethora of engaging characters assist her along the way, it is Lili’s strength of character and self-determination that keep her on the right path. The poignant twist at the end will have you flipping back to the first chapters, pleased that this has been remembered and tied up.
It’s an epic book that’s length may be a little daunting, but the author possesses the rare skill of being able to write about anything in an engaging and entertaining way. I would happily follow her describing a queue at the post office because she does so in a manner that will make you wonder where the time went.
This is must-read tale of friendship, love and reinvention by a talented author who is one to follow.
Beautifully written, heartwarming, soul-stirring, uplifting and inspiring.
Becoming Lili is a beautiful story about love, about friendship and loyalty, and about hope. It’s a story about finding the courage to take control of your life and to change it into what you want it to be.
Lili grew up unloved by her own parents and bullied at school. The beginning of the story made me cry. My heart was aching for the poor girl, and I constantly felt like hugging my kids and telling them a million times how much I love them. I wished I could hug Lili too.
As if she wasn’t suffering enough, she then lost the only person who loved her, and whom she saw as her only chance to be happy.
After Lili turns 18, we follow her amazing story of complete transformation. Changing herself, her identity, her name, her life. Learning, making mistakes, stumbling, getting up, learning again. And now, with eyes full of happy tears, we witness her successes, small and big, and watch her find friends— mostly people who were, just like her, lonely and broken. She brings them together, and basking in the love and warmth of her big heart, their lives change too.
Life is not all sunshine and rainbows, though. Lili is faced with a new challenge. When she finds the man she falls head over heels in love with, it turns out, she can’t be with him. I’ll say no more, you have to read and find out what happens.
I can’t wait to dive into the next book in the trilogy!
It took me only two days to finish this book - which with autism and ADHD is at supersonic speed! I couldn't stop reading!
It took me, however, fortnight to submit the review. I have been starting many times and I realised whatever I'd written would not reflect how good this book is.
Even if it is not your genre - as it wasn't mine - you should read it. It will take you on vicarious adventure you won't regret.
Book reads so well, thanks to the fantastic writing style but that's not all.
The story itself made me laugh, anticipate, cry, and blush couple of times.
I lived through Lily's story and it had a cathartic effect on me.
I meant to write a synopsis but I won't! I am not going to spoil this wonderful adventure - see, and well, read for yourself!
I can only tell you that you will not regret it! That you will feel the protagonist's pain, her strength against all odds, her resilience and tenacity that comes from good heart not revenge.
You will vicariously live through her life and the end... The end scene gave me goosebumps and made me cry - not out of sorrow nor pain. It was cathartic cry.
I loved this story with all my heart and you will too.
P.S. There are so many things I'd with to tell you about this book, but this story is too beautiful for spoilers!
@juliablakeauthor thank you for writing this book!
Having read Julia Blakes's other books, I was ookig for a story to sit down, relax and enjoy. This was it.
Phyllis becomes Lili - clever title. The lonely, ugly ducking grows up to be a swan and makes a group of eclectic friends; people who become very loyal to her because of her good heart. I enjoyed reading their stories, too.
A lot happened at once as we reached the end of the end of the story. A few years were all crammed into a few pages as everything was rounded up. It was obvious there really needed to be a follow up, and I'm so glad there is!
Be prepared for a big, sweeping, dramatic, epic saga that has everything from cruelty, heartache, angst, soaring joys, happiness and accomplishments. It's also a big book, but don't let that deter you as you get caught up in the multicast of characters, who each have their moment to shine. Ms Blake has an adept talent of getting into a person's psyche, pushing their buttons and making them react like real, relatable, normal people. I'm eager to read the sequel, Chaining Daisy, and expect nothing less from the talented Julia Blake as she conjures up a smorgasbord of plots and twists and various levels of emotions to put her poor characters through.
An extraordinary story of moving into self love . Phyllis is the child of self absorbed lovers and a narcissistic mother who destroy her confidence and self esteem. She is rescued by her dear and loving grandmother in several ways. A chance encounter in a supermarket lights the way to a new life and we meet an amazing cast of mentors, both reliable and unreliable as Phyllis becomes Lili Expect to laugh, cry and fall in love with Lili and her friends as the pages just turn themselves. A wonderful five stars from me.
With a dash of the Ugly Duckling, a pinch of Pygmalion and a smidgen of Cinderella's fairy godmother, Becoming Lili is the story of a bullied, unloved little girl who transforms herself into Lili with the help of her grandmother and a new-found friend. Remembering her own mistreatment at the hands of others, Lili becomes a loyal friend eventually gathering a gang of friends (hurt by life circumstances) who enjoy spending time together at her renovated house, going clubbing and touring on their days off from work.. But when 19-year-old Lili falls in love, will she find only heartbreak as her love-interest remains out of reach still when she's 21? Forced to make a heart-rending choice, Lili prepares herself for a life other than what she's imagined. A heartwarming read of found family set in 1990s London and the surrounding countryside that becomes very spicy about seventy-five percent into the story. The first in the perennials trilogy.
