I'm going to be straightforward here...This story reads like a 3th grader's re-telling of whatever 3th graders read today, which is to say the writing style was so straight-to-the-point that it was dry as a desert air, and was as emotional as an auditor's report (i.e. not at all, in case some auditor who is really passionate about his job is reading this review). Any attempts at creating some kind of conflict fell flat and the same can be said for plot and character development. Really, there's not a single thing that redeems this book in my eyes. This was harsh, but it is what it is.

Can't recommend this.

I’ve never read a book by Perci T. Brooks and I feel so bad because I wanted so much to like this story. Sadly, it was not meant to be. This was a story that lacked passion and trying way too hard. It reads like "My first MM" and I just couldn’t lose myself in it. Not even a little. Prince Amory made his home a sanctuary for the LGBT people in his father’s Kingdom. He falls in love with a servant his father was abusing and after many confrontations with his father Amory loses everything. The setup of the story is essentially that of a series but I am not emotionally invested nor interested in the fate of any of these characters. Hopefully Brooks, will write a follow up and tie up the lose ends for those that have enjoyed the book. Hopefully the plot and character development will be stronger in the follow up.

I'm not generally a fan of the M/M genre but I am a fangirl of those few authors that specialize in this field and infuse their characters with undeniable depth and purpose that I can't help but dive in.

I've read Ms. Brooks' other two self published short stories, each a sweet read with their own magic. And honestly, I have to say her growth between both those tales and this one, is extraordinary. She's an apprentice in an art no one truly masters but gives her best, every time, and is committed to staying focused on what needs to be done to continue on in this biz.

I adored Amory and his Knight in Shining Armor personality. His rescue of Nestor, a mistreated slave purchased for the cruel enjoyment of the King (Amory's father) felt 'real' and gave the reader a glimpse of a man who is at peace with who he is and confident in his own abilities. I won't give it all away but lets just say that in Amory, Nestor finds the answers to questions he never even knew he had.

While I enjoyed their scenes and happily consumed the pages that led to their own ending, there is one more character I found myself attracted to. The Prince's bestie, Covyll. Hs is aide, mentor, best friend, companion and brother of the blood to Amory and his loyalty is unwavering. Also, he's got that dry humor and do NOT mess with me attitude I love. His protection of Amory is both believable and commendable.

I am eager to read more of Ms. Brooks' tales. She appears to be growing more confident in her chosen genre and it shows. The characters have soul and the plot is solid. She is showing definite improvement in her art and if she keeps on in the same vein, I have no doubt this lady writer will knock socks right off.

When I first read the premise of this story, I was intrigued. The story itself is interesting and engaging, but I had issues with the author's writing style. It seemed sterile and lacked feeling at times, and there were numerous short sentences that gave a staccato feel to the flow. I enjoyed all of the main characters, but wished I could have learned more about them. Readers received short spurts of exposition, but I was always left wanting more. While Amory and Néstor were the focus of the story, I yearned to know more about Covyll, Amory's right-hand man, confidant and occasional friend with benefits. The abrupt ending made me wonder if this is the first book in a series and created a lot of questions regarding the fate of the characters. I hope this does turn out to be a series because I would love to read more about Covyll and his potential love interest.

Royal Surrender provides an interesting premise. It is an easy, light read that makes it perfect for a cold evening by the fire. I perhaps would have liked to have seen it turned into a longer work, with greater build-up before the relationship and as a lead-in to the grand finale; however, as it stands it is a pleasant short read for those who like simple tales in the fantasy-historical genre.
