NOTE: One of the authors graciously gave me a copy of this book and asked me to write a review.

Bryan Cohen and Casey Lane continue their YA Viral Superhero saga documenting the adventures of average teenager turned superhero Ted Finley in the fourth installment, Enemy Territory. And, while this book does answer a number of questions regarding the series' overall backstory, the more we learn about how Ted came to be, the less interesting and well written these books become.

To sum up the Viral Superhero backstory in a nutshell, two groups of aliens, dubbed the light souls and dark souls, have been doing battle for control of the universe for centuries. The dark souls inhabit and reanimate dead bodies, who then do their bidding, while the light souls instead imbue great powers on a selected few, including high school student Ted Finley, who is now in his fourth book of fighting off the bad guys. He has some of his high school friends to help him in these battles as sort of a Scooby Squad, and one individual light soul, a "protector" who has taken the shape of a former classmate of Ted's named Erica, who serves as Ted's mentor.

Enemy Territory gets off to a running start as it resolves a cliffhanger ending from the last volume in the series. Ted and one of his friends wind up on the home planet of the light and dark souls, where he (and readers) learn a lot more about them, specifically that the relationship between the warring groups is a lot more complicated than depicted in the first three books in the series. In the meantime, back on earth, Ted's remaining friends do battle with another superpowered villain, a Senator who is now the leading contender for the United States Presidency.

Enemy Territory and the other books in this series are actually the authors’ second go-around with this material. They originally wrote this series and published it on Amazon a few years back as “Ted Saves the World.” I read both versions of the first two books in the series but I’ve only read the current version of Enemy Territory. However, from what I can tell, the books have been streamlined somewhat from their original versions and the content is now more geared towards a YA audience. For an adult reader who really enjoyed the first set of characters, that’s not a good development. Further, much of the streamlining seems to be cutting out of bridge material in which the authors explain enough about the previous books so that readers who aren't intimately familiar with them aren't lost. Even though I had read the three earlier books in the last few months, I got confused several times when long lost characters from earlier volumes seemed to pop up again in Enemy Territory and I kept trying to figure out who they were.

The strength of these books has been the supporting cast that help Ted along, consisting of various high school friends who are still high school students with their own romantic problems and internal joshing and bickering. Now, however, the depth of characterization has been stripped away and what remains are a couple of stock character traits and lots of mediocre puns and jokes they crack, generally at extremely inopportune moments. Almost none of the jokes are funny (though they are what high schoolers might say). Beyond the jokes, the book has a lot of repetitive and sometimes confusing action scenes, and the gaps in between these scenes seem to exist solely to give the authors a chance to throw a couple more bad puns out there. Further, although the jams that the main characters are in seem hopeless in some instances, they all manage to resolve themselves far too easily (sometimes without much explanation).

I realize these books are YA books, and I don’t expect the same depth of characterization I would find in adult science fiction. But while I felt the characters were real and three dimensional in the first book in the series, with each succeeding volume both they and the backstory become less and less appealing, so that now the series seems more gauged towards middle schoolers who will enjoy the non-stop fighting and bad puns. As with most of the volumes in this series, Enemy Territory ends on a somewhat inconclusive note (albeit not a true cliffhanger as did the last volume). Here’s hoping the series gets back into better written territory as soon as possible.

Once again Bryan Cohen and Casey Lane do a great job combining paranormal sci-fi (of the super-hero variety) with a dash of combat, some romance (of the YA variety), a goodly dose of humor and a touch (for flavoring) of horror. If you've read and enjoyed the prior books in the series you will enjoy this one too. If you haven't read any of them then start with the first one, "The Dark Souls". It's free on Kindle but be warned: even though it doesn't end in a cliff-hanger you'll likely get hooked into buying the rest of the books in the series (which is exactly what happened to me).

Kindle Unlimited, which is probably a good thing if you like this type of book and then realize it's going to be The Viral Superhero Series (5 Book collection total} by Bryan Cohen and Casey Lane that will include 1 The Dark Souls 2 The Telepath 3 The Candidate 4 Enemy Territory 5 The Devil Within. {I haven't gotten my review copy yet but since read the other 3 wanted to read this one so pulled it on ku} oooh superheroes *POW*....

1 The Dark Souls 2 The Telepath 3 The Candidate 4 Enemy Territory 5 The Devil Within
* Books edited and revamped new editiond -- Dark Souls previously published as Ted Saves the World, The Telepath as Mind Over Easy, The Candidate as Portal Combat, Enemy Territory as The Light, the Dark, and the Ugly and The Devil Within as Veil to the Chief

In this week's thrilling episode {yeah should stop saying that, not gonna but should} After passing through the portal to another realm, superhero Ted Finley must put his trust in unlikely allies to survive. The Realm of Souls is a war zone, Ted and Natalie are behind enemy lines, badly injured and powerless, a mysterious woman and her village may hold their only hope of making it home. Erica LaPlante is down to her second-to-last option and only a coordinated effort from Jennifer, Dhiraj, and the rest of the gang will keep Erica from her last resort: death and regeneration, but fugitives at large can’t hide forever, and some of them won’t live long enough to clear their names.

Almost gave this one a 4 because couldn't give it a 4 1/2; no spoilers, but I saw the ending coming, almost totally exactly, but then again there were hints and things that others in the story should have caught, and the ending didn't really totally make sense on a few things/in a few ways. Hoping or assuming #5 will clear it all up or whatever.

The Viral Superhero Series
The Chosen One/Ted Saves the World {prequel/0.5}
The Dark Souls 1
The Telepath 2
The Candidate 3
Enemy Territory 4
The Devil Within 5
**THERE ARE NOW &7 BOOKS NOT 5 in series, ADD The Rebellion (The Viral Superhero Series Book 6) and The Final Battle (The Viral Superhero Series Book 7)

Ted is MY Super Hero!

WOW! I am very much addicted to Ted!!! I have no idea how Bryan has master planned such a phenomenal story like he has with the Ted series, but ITS UTTERLY MARVELLOUS! And with each book it just keeps getting better and better and I find myself more spellbound with each book, heck even with each chapter! I love how “larger-than-life” this series feels. One of my favorite things about these books is that it is all story. Each book just carries off from where the last one left off, there isn’t any “refresher” or doubling back, every book leaves off on a cliff-hanger which may or may not be answered in the next book. I can’t wait until this series is complete, with all books published because I can see myself reading through each book in order, one after the other and it will read like one big million page fantastically epic story!!! (Yes, I am exaggerating on the pages, but you get my point.) This is also a series that you can read many times over and still be able to pick up on new things, finally see through the illusion of that one character, or be able to read it with all of the secrets known and then every single part will become clear, you will understand just why so & so did this or didn’t, etc. I cannot believe how many twists & turns this story has taken! It not only has done so but it has still managed to keep a hold on the overall feel of the story, no matter how “light” or “dark” or “ugly” the story gets. I am in awe of Bryan’s massive amount of talent for story telling! This story encompasses so many different people across time & space & worlds, sometimes with the same people who become or were other people, and even though that should sound confusing, complicated, tough to keep track of everyone & everything, it isn’t! This is where Bryan’s own exceptional super-hero abilities come in. He has this gift to take all of the storyline, characters, worlds, past lives, etc. and weave it all together into one incredibly wonderful series that actually is a great “lighter” read! Meaning you don’t need to take a million notes, make flowcharts or any other such tools to be able to read & enjoy each book as it comes out. Yes this series did initially start off more “light & pretty” – it is about a geeky teenager for goodness sakes! – and yes it has gotten “darker & ugly”, but while Bryan has stayed true to every character’s personality, and as you would expect in any book and/or series, they have also grown as well. Saving the world will have that effect on you! And while their characters grow, they are STILL teenagers with the same dorky traits and humor. Sometimes I get so absorbed in the story that when one of them makes a “stupid” or immature remark or ill-timed joke, I start to get disgusted with them or the timing…and then I remember - THEY ARE IMMATURE since they are all around the tender age of 17. *snicker* Then it all becomes funny again! Which is why, in my opinion, this series keeps on working so well! So don’t be alarmed or turned off from the fact that this says it is a YA read – it is a series for anyone who likes to read a great story that has no predictability, is clean but doesn’t shy away from the darker side, has a deeper underlying story that will entrance you and is stuffed full of awesomeness!!

Bryan Cohen has created a marvelous series in Ted! Each book takes us further in the life of a group of teenagers who are discovering who they are, while trying to save the world and stay alive. In so many series, by book four, you are seldom surprised by anything as it’s formula written. Not with Ted’s book 4! Every page seems to be a twist, a new reason to turn the next page, or a new character to get to know. I simply love this series. Ted and friends never stop, and can navigate the evil characters faster than I can say READ THIS BOOK. Mr. Cohen does not lightly draw the reader in – he grabs you and doesn’t let you go. You end up caring about the characters, laugh at their exploits, feel sadness when death or destruction occur, and get mad when evil triumphs. The author handles sensitive issues like death in a very caring, way – unless you need to be jolted by cold, uncaring evil as the story develops. I enjoy having my emotions drug along through page after page. This series delivers so much, a little romance (afterall superheroes need loved), a little lightness and joy, a lot of second guessing and flying by the seat of their pants, and of course, a little evil to keep us all in line. And if you think you know the ending on the second to last page…..you are WRONG. LOVE it! Every word, every gasp, sob, and held breath. Book Five cannot come quick enough. This is not a heavy or light read – it’s a rollercoaster that you do not want to stop. READ this book! READ this series!

Bryan Cohen has created a brilliant, captivating series in Ted! Each book takes us further in the life of a group of teenagers who are discovering who they are, while trying to save the world and stay alive. Many series start to become boring by the third or fourth book, but Ted just keeps getting better! The pages turn themselves, the suspense builds and the characters come to life. There is so much to learn about each of them, and this is done throughout the series, but by tantalizingly bit. Sweet agony! I simply love this series, even though I am no YA. Ted and friends never stop, and Mr. Cohen grabs you and doesn’t let you go. You develop a love for each character, laugh, cry an love with them. Sensitive issues are dealt with in a sensitive manner, and I am happy to allow my teenagers to read these books because of these points. However, don't try to predict the ending. You are bound to be wrong!!! The author enjoys throwing a curve ball! Book Five cannot come quick enough. I am addicted to Ted!

And here begins the next instalment of Ted saves the world. You’d tend to think by now that Cohen has strung out this series too much, however you are completely wrong. This series just keeps getting better with the more of the story told. In this book we follow both stories either side of the portal. On the one side we’ve got Ted and Natalie who are trapped in a world where there enemies are trying to kill them, then however they turn into allies; and on the other side of the portal we’ve got Erica, Jennifer, Dhiraj and Travis battling enemies from the previous instalments as they try to figure out a way to get to there friends home safe. This instalment introduces us to the dark souls who have featured previously throughout via backstories and Erica. Thank you to the author, Bryan Cohen, for providing me with an eBook of 'Ted Saves the World' for the purposes of writing an honest review, it was a pleasure to read once again.

Another great read in this 4th installment in the Ted Saves the World series. I've been a fan since book one and have enjoyed reading and watching how the characters have grown and evolved. Bryan Cohen does an excellent job and describing scenes and events yet leaves enough unsaid to let the readers imagination take hold. If you have not yet read the first 3 books, READ THEM FIRST. Not because you will be lost in this book if you don't, but because you will have lost out on 3 great books!

The series keeps rolling along. Some characters from the back story are coming to the foreground and we get to meet "dark souls" who are pretty decent people. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I don't like waiting for the next one. I'm impatient that way. Worth a reading. Make sure to read the previous volumes.
