നോവലിസ്റ്റ്, ചെറുകഥാകൃത്ത്, കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റ്, രാഷ്ട്രീയ ചിന്തകന്‍, പത്രപ്രവര്‍ത്തകന്‍. 1930 ജൂലൈ 2-ന് പാലക്കാട് വിളയന്‍ചാത്തനൂരില്‍ ജനിച്ചു. ചെന്നൈ പ്രസിഡന്‍സി കോളജില്‍നിന്ന് ഇംഗ്ലിഷ് എം.എ. കുറച്ചുകാലം കോളജില്‍ അദ്ധ്യാപകന്‍. പിന്നീട് ശങ്കേഴ്‌സ് വീക്ക്‌ലി, പെട്രിയറ്റ്, ദ സ്റ്റേറ്റ്‌സ്മാന്‍ എന്നീ ആനുകാലികങ്ങളില്‍ പത്രപ്രവര്‍ത്തകന്‍. നോവല്‍, കഥ, ലേഖനം, കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ വിഭാഗങ്ങളിലായി 30 കൃതികള്‍. 1990-ല്‍ കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ്; സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ്, 1991-ല്‍ വയലാര്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (ഗുരുസാഗരം), 1992-ല്‍ മുട്ടത്തു വര്‍ക്കി അവാര്‍ഡ് (ഖസാക്കിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസം), 1999-ല്‍ എം.പി. പോള്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (തലമുറകള്‍) എന്നീ പുരസ്‌കാരങ്ങള്‍. 2001-ല്‍ കേരള ഗവണ്മെന്റിന്റെ എഴുത്തച്ഛന്‍ പുരസ്‌കാരം. 2003-ല്‍ പത്മഭൂഷണ്‍ ലഭിച്ചു. 2005 മാര്‍ച്ച് 30-ന് അന്തരിച്ചു.


O. V. Vijayan was born in Palakkad on July 2, 1930. His father O. Velukkutty was an officer in Malabar Special Police of the erstwhile Madras Province in British India.Formal schooling began at the age of twelve, when he joined Raja’s High School, Kottakkal in Malabar, directly in to sixth grade. The following year, Velukkutty was transferred and Vijayan joined the school at Koduvayur in Palakkad. He graduated from Victoria College in Palakkad and obtained a masters degree in English literature from Presidency College.
While he lived outside Kerala for most of his adult life, spending time in Delhi and in Hyderabad (where his wife Teresa was from), he never forgot his beloved Palakkad, where the 'wind whistles through the passes and the clattering black palms'. He created a magical Malabar in his works, one where the mundane and the inspired lived side-by-side. His Vijayan-land, a state of mind, is portrayed vividly in his work.

Vijayan was unlucky not to win India's principal literary prize, the Jnanpith, possibly because he did not endear himself to the political powers-that-be through his trenchant cartoons (Shankar's Weekly, The Far Eastern Economic Review, The Hindu, The Statesman). However, in 2003, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award.

A must-read.The stories in this book range from creepy to highly emotional to comic.Some of the stories nearly brought tears to my eyes."Brunam " had me slightly creeped out,whereas the truly comic "Kaalankozhi" had me in splits.There was yet another story called "Snehathinde Shraadham" that brought tears to my eyes.

കാറ്റു പറഞ്ഞ കഥയിൽ കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നത് ജ്യേഷ്ഠൻ മരിച്ചതുകൊണ്ട് നാട്ടിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചുവന്ന പ്രവാസി പഴയകാല ഓർമ്മകൾ അയവിറക്കുന്നതാണ്. ഗഹനമായ വായനയാണ് ഓരോ കഥകളും അർഹിക്കുന്നത് അല്ലാത്തപക്ഷം ഗ്രഹിക്കാൻ അല്പം പ്രയാസമായിരിക്കും.
