Shivers and Sins #2

Doing It To Death

Rate this book
An alternate cover for ASIN B0719651CX can be found here.

I savor my life of blood and power and I’ve never wanted more.
Until the night a witch forced her pathetic human needs into my mind.
My prey made me want her, made me relish her pain, and ensnared me with pleasure. Made me want things I didn’t understand.
I couldn’t break her. I failed to kill her.
Now, I can't hunt, can't feed, and can't sleep for the bitch whispering in my head.
Did baby witch cast a spell on me? My stomach howls with the answer.
The only way to break this curse is to kill the witch who cast it.
I'm coming for you, baby.
This time, I'm gonna do you to death.

Author’s Note:

The light at the bottom of this rabbit hole is tinted obsidian, and I put the characters in this story through the ringer. Not for the faint-hearted, this read explores the dark side of obsession, in all its forms. Adults only from this point. Strap in and buckle up. Keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times. Because the teeth lurking ahead are razor sharp and the blood they seek might be yours. Please, do not attempt to exert your human morals on the fictional beasts you will meet. They'll just laugh while they rip you to shreds.

WTH happened to Jesse?! He was the ultimate predator, the most Alpha Alpha I'd read in a long time, and now he's a puppy dog. So the witch learned a trick, helping him feel emotions, but damn, did he have to lose all that made him Jesse in the process? I'm so utterly disappointed that I don't even know where to begin. He went from completely selfish to I just want to see her happy... It was barf-worthy. I also don't know what happened with the editing. There were some issues in the first book but nothing like this one. Things like "I got to me feet..." and "never be as cold I as I used to be." are all over this book. Also, commas are our friends, but only if they're put in the right place.
"Thick locs, threaded with the same silver as his beard and pubic hair fell over shoulders, reminding me of a vampire..." That's some super long pubes, dude...

Die By The Drop (Book 1) was just an appetizer. Doing It To Death (Book 2) is the sizzle and the steak! This story doesn't remotely resemble Twilight, at all. This is the dark and twisted story of Jesse and Evie and how they navigate their New World Order. This story takes the reader on a journey that reveals lies and truths and something in between. I need more time to think about this story before I post my review.

Longer review coming soon.

In the meantime, I'll leave you with a bit of humor ...

I kissed her throat and felt her swallow in response. “I can’t believe I died, got turned, and woke up, still stuck with a period. It’d be almost cruel if not for—”

Sick & Demented

This is such a repulsive series. Dark romances like this are all about exploitation. This series is so sick and twisted and not in a good way. I would have appreciated the author letting me know that the lead male character Jessie was bisexual as was Vaughn. This of course is not what ruined this series for me, what ruined it is today's authors taking rape and turning into something consensual.

What a journey. An absolutely gut-wrenching one. And so SO worth every minute of angst, every heart palpitation, every hiss of anger at my Kindle...
More to come when I've come down from the intense high of this story.
I can't even imagine what book three will bring.

Doing It To Death is told entirely from Jesse's POV, and even if you're not a fan of reading a romance entirely from the hero's POV, you will enjoy it if only because you get see more of the vampire universe, and the power players that pull the strings in that universe in a way that we probably couldn't have with Evie.

Doing It To Death is not a repeat of the mesmerizingly horrific vampire sex road trip from hell that Die By The Drop was. Doing It To Death is a lot more of a conventional romance than I was expecting because Jesse is pretty much biteless from the start. You can consider Doing It To Death Jesse's redemption song. I understand why the choice was made because Jesse and Evie don't really talk in the previous book, although there were symbols like the feather necklace and other moments that hinted at something deeper in their relationship, Jesse also did a lot of things to Evie that need to be addressed before they moved forward.

The universe building of Shivers and Sins reminded me, on the whole, of John Wick in how seamlessly and stylishly the vampire universe worked in plain sight to the human universe, for example the room service calls in the vampire motels was reminiscent to the cool professionalism of the Continental Hotel. I loved the way Kaia Bennett dropped clues to how the universe worked in Die By The Drop and really peeled back the curtain here in Doing It To Death. In expanding the universe to explore vampire, witch, and werewolf relations, Bennett also gives a satisfying explanation into their origin stories and what led them to treat each other like enemies today.

This ends on a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read Book 3 when it comes out!

I am in absolute shock! Here is where good girls, who were once in the clutches of monsters learn to fight back with their own teeth and claws. This book takes you deeper than the first, and truly immerses you into the tragic world of Jesse and Evie. Continuing on after Evie awakens from death, after Jesse accidentally turned her in a selfish bid to keep her. Learning that as he intended to kill her, Evie placed a curse on him, just as he unwittingly bonded them together as mates. They know that this accidental bond must be broken someway. As they are now the first vampire and witch to be bonded in more than 500 years. Told from Jesse's point of view, we learn about his past born of bloodshed passed down from his father and inhabited by all vampires.

Evie finally has some of the reigns of control with her new hybrid status as half witch half vampire. Rightfully denying Jesse what he used to take from her, as these two discover the hidden history of vampire witch relations. Evie struggles with the bond, and her hate and desire for the one who was not long ago her tormentor. But being an empathic witch makes her heart compassionately struggle against deserved hate.

And Jesse learns some hard lessons that bring him to the harsh realities revealed through his bond with her, making it known exactly the harm he's done to her. And he rightfully suffers at the hands of Cai, realizing that he'd rather die than let Evie suffer again. Being connected to each other brings glimpses of humanity to Jesse, teaching him that what he believes to be vampire nature doesn't have to be so. And he realizes his love for the soft hearted heroine whom he's done nothing but take from. There's still so much more and my heart bleeds for Evie as she tries to find stability on a path she never chose. But through the bitter sadness of heartache and pain, Jesse's determination to love and attempt at trying to heal her like she's done him, blossoms into hope.

I am astounded at yet again this book brought me to tears. It's so hard to allow yourself to shift the condemning light from Jesse and Vaughn (who needed to be chained up for the duration of this book!). Through Evie he is sometimes willingly and unwillingly unlearning callous and vicious behavior. He has learned the meaning of shame and regret that was once so foreign to him. He's taken a step back from his Alpha status as a born vampire, believing it was his right to subjugate all other beings, but the life of chasing down the bloodlust is no longer appealing. He can't turn back to an empty existence now that Evie has given him much more to live for. In order to save her, he had to become someone else, and look at their supernatural world with opened eyes. Now we have to wait and see what's in store for our tragic couple.

I honestly feel as if I should get some kind of endurance award for finishing this book. I can't even rate it, because I have no idea how I feel about it. About midway through, you start thinking you'll die yourself if you have to read one more graphic description of a person being literally fucked to death. Directly after that, rape and torture become almost pedestrian, because you're swimming in them. The author's talent with language keeps the over-the-top guts and gore from being ridiculous, but I'm not sure what I think of *myself* for voluntarily wading through this muck. What in the ever-loving F am I even reading? The last third of the book lets actual character development occur and stops me feeling that I need to bleach my brain. Now it's done and I do want to read book three, but I don't know why I want to put myself through it.

What the heck.

Paranormal meets romance meets horror. I DEFINITELY DO NOT recommend not reading the first in this series Die by the Drop. I miss the development of the relationship between ALL of the characters. I miss learning the intricacies of the relationships between Jesse, Vaugh, Liam and even Cai. I miss not knowing how Evie became their captive. With that being said, without having read Die by the Drop (Volume I) I found this story fairly easy to follow the next installment and get sucked in (no pun intended). The descriptions of previous events that took place in the previous book are graphic enough to allow a new reader to the Shivers & Sins series to play catch up...kind of. A much appreciated consideration by the author. However, not enough to not ask WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and WHY? Great job by Ms. Bennett for making me want to know and learn more about the characters. So definitely, definitely read the first book. I plan on purchasing it to get the full backstory....I need the FULL backstory.
Jesse and Evie's new found bond is HOT to say the least. However, something tells me this bond existed long before the attempted murder at the lake. The bond is depicted as purely carnal and physical but feelings, although physical responses (at first) seem to slowly creep in. Jesse feels things for Evie he continually attempts to deny. While Evie tries to deny her feelings as well. I absolutely loved the mental connection between the two. The way Jesse and Evie read one another's thoughts is humorous at times. The added protection of Stark is a plus to the story line; showing another dimension.
Hard to believe this is the same author of one of my favorite romantic three part series (#1 Crush, Closer & Mind Over Matter). It seems Kaia Bennett has found another niche...another genre of writing that seems to come second nature for her. Kaia's uncanny ability to describe emotions of a vampire, witch and their victims is amazing. She has the ability to take readers to the space and time of each and every event.

Great book

I finished this book last night and had to sleep on it before I wrote a review.

Good to know:

It continues right where book one ended with a seamless flow. It kept me engaged, I wanted to know what was going to happen, and how would it end? Yes, you are able to guess some of the out come but it felt more like the writer wanted you to figure it out instead of the other way around.

Kaia Bennett is a great writer, her character development is awesome. There was no wondering how things came to be, and you weren't left guessing.

The power struggle between Evie and Jesse could be felt and at times I despised and sympathized for both of them. Hell I felt that way for Vaughn as well. Which, truth be told can be a little unsettling when you think about all the disgusting things they did. This leads me back to Kaia being a great writer and her ability to round out her characters.

There are a few grammatical errors but nothing that really had me rolling my eyes or gritting my teeth. Additionally, just like book 1 this ends on a "cliff hanger".

I have read all previous works by Ms. Bennett and her journey into another genre has been nothing short of fantastic. This is an excellent follow-up to Die By the Drop. Readers should be aware that Ms. Bennett remains true to these fascinating characters that are intensely dark, sometimes stomach churning and highly erotic so read at your own risk. Ms. Bennett has fully committed to writing a tale that is so rich and engaging that at times readers may need a moment to digest the action, pause to fully accept her words or speed read to absorb her diabolical creations that are Evie and Jessie. There are many stunning surprises throughout this story and Ms. Bennett wraps book two up with some revelations and high anticipation of things to come in the final installment. This offering by Kaia Bennett is highly recommended and definitely worth keeping in the to be read again pile.

It seemed like it took a while for this book to get going, but then when you realize how much ground this book covers, it's understandable.

The first book in the story was dark. It was twisted. There was no light at the end of the tunnel or redeeming qualities for the men in that story.

The second book begins where the first one ended, and this time we get to see a more humanitarian Jesse, although it takes a long while to get there. I loved the strong witch that Evie became, and I loved watching her grow and become accepting of her nature. I think Jess was unsure of his feelings, and how to deal with the things he was going through. Cai is a wild card, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us in the next book. Vaughn was a not-so-pleasant surprise, but he was a fantastic secondary character that added so much to the story. I can't wait to read the next book!!

I LOVED LOVED LOVED book 2 of not more than book 1. Kaia it this book out of the park and not just the Wilderness Parks she mentions in the book. I'm so looking forward to book 3 especially after that explosive ending. This book will be my favorite of yours, I loved the mention of the many locales in Canada in this book, especially Alberta my province and the one mentioning of Edmonton my city which I was ecstatic over!!! But seriously the turn of events that take place in this book were mind blowing. I'm sooooo looking forward to seeing where you take this story and characters in book 3!!!

This is a fantastic read. Boundaries are pushed as Jesse and Evie's story evolves. There are many twists and of course it's Dark. It's easy to get sucked into the world of Vamps/Witches and Wolves and Ms Bennett writes it with perfection. The story flows and even Vaughn becomes just a bit more loveable, well for me that is. So do your self a favour grab book 1 Death By The Drop and then Book 2 Doing It To Death you won't be disappointed.

Whoa!!! Jesse and Evie's crazy journey continues and let me just say this book is not for the faint of heart. It pushes boundaries and is definitely dark.
I loved how Jesse and Evie evolve.
We get a deeper story and questions are answered but more pop up so I cannot wait for the next book!!
Shivers and Sins is so well written and Ms. Bennett writes with such vivid imagery I feel like I'm totally apart of this story watching it all unfold.
My one negative was at times it felt a bit repetitive.
I loved meeting different supernatural characters and learning the story behind their cultures. It was really very interesting.
If you like dark mindfk sexy supernatural stories this series is a must read!!

This is my review and how I see it. Doing It To Death, Shivers and Sin Volume II, is a must read. This book is not for the weak. Author, Kaia Bennett, in her second installment of Shivers and Sins Volume II: Doing It To Death explores the next chapter of Evie's and Jesse's story from Jesse's point of view. The author takes you back to the beginning just after Jessie has killed Evie and gives readers a view of what happen, while Evie was reborn as a vampire and escaped her watery grave, with Jesse and Vaughn. If Ms. Bennett's purpose was to keep me enthralled with this story she did her job, I could not put it down. This book is for anyone who likes dark erotic stories that don't turn out quite like they would expect them too. A reader would be very surprised at how this tale unfolds. If you do not like dark erotic stories deal in non-consent and death, this book is not for you.

As a reader, I was so happy to get the opportunity to read the second installment, and I will be checking my email looking out for Volume III. The author really took me on a thrill ride with Jesse, Evie, Vaughn, and Stark (Evie's werewolf guardian). What Ms. Bennett did with Jesse and Vaughn by the end of this book was WOW!!! As I read this story it was as if I were seeing things through the eyes of the characters, feeling what they felt (especially Jesse and Evie) as Jesse described the events has they happened. I still miss Liam as Jesse and Vaughn do, it would have been interesting to see how all of this played out if he were still alive (in a manner of speaking).

As much as Jesse and Evie wanted to break their bond it was like they were tethered together in an invisible force of nature they had no control over. The interaction between the main characters was so intense and the supporting characters were so will developed. This was more of the books that you just cannot put down. Author, Kaia Bennett, by the end of this book I was like "Wait...What! I was not ready for this at all! I was looking for my happy ending, dammit!"

I will be watching for the rest of the story.

I enjoyed this book. There are many things that I really like. One, the subject matter is taboo, so that’s fun. Two, the writer has no filter. She is not shy and she goes there. This IS adult erotic fiction. I respect and love that! Three, even though it’s dripping with smut the writer is actually very talented. The vivid description, imagery and story telling/weaving present in this book is impressive. Despite the disturbing themes and repetitive actions in book you are pulled in and pulled along the current of the story. Four, book two is a massive upgrade from the first book. Some of the complaints I had about book 1 were fixed in book 2. I like seeing the growth of an author and the story. Fifth, this book was nice and meaty. You can sink your teeth in.

Now, gushing aside, there are still too many sex scenes. They are well written and can give you a tingle but after reading the 10 one before 33% it becomes tedious and boring. They story and writing are good. The author doesn’t need so much sex in the book. I love good sex scenes but often sex is used as a crutch for weak stories. Bennett’s story is not weak, she can pull way back on the sex and give us more substance. I would really like that for book 3.

Also, as much as I appreciate a length, this book seemed to drag on. It took me quite some time to finish. I think because it was weighed down by the sex scenes.

It took a second before I could get in the groove of this installment. The first book is extremely dramatic extremely dark all around delicious! Jesse is THE man in book one and he never apologized for his alpha/caveman aura. The lag between the two installments contributed to my delayed reaction. After a quick briefing of book one, I could move forward with book two.

My biggest issue with Doing it to Death is the astronomical change in Jesse's personality. He seems more like an omega than an alpha in this story. At least in the beginning. I loved his obsession with the witch but in my personal opinion, he gave her way too much leeway in the beginning. As I continued in the story, things turned around quite a bit. The darkness came out out of no where and TKO'd me!

I can't wait until the next installment. I made notes and bookmarked the important stuff for a refresh before the next read! Until next time......

3.5 stars!

November 2, just came back to say how SAD I feel because I still don't have desire to finish this book. And I want to, I really do, just so I can know what will happen with Vaughn, but at the same time I can't.

I liked the first book so damn much I can't even believe I won't finish this one.

DNF.

OMG. Why is this book so long? And so boring. It's the freaking same, all the freaking time. They fight, they starve, they fight some more and then thet finally feed and have sex. REPEAT. I was enduring it not for Evelyn nor Jesse, but for Vaughn. He's the most interesting character in this story, but not even his savage nature and reckless behaviour can make me finish this drag of a book.

I'm so sad because I really liked the first one. I WANTED to like this one, too. It sounded promising. But all the bloodshed and the mistery became really old, real fast. Maybe I could finish it later. MAYBE.

This book is lengthy. This book takes place after Evie's transformation. If you read book one, it comes as no surprise that she is now a hybrid of sorts, witch and vampire. Evie and Jesse try to break their bond throughout the course of this book. There's too much bad blood between these two. Two stars because it quickly got boring. I won't be reading book 3.

YES GAWD! This follow up!

Character development for DAYS. So many unanswered questions were answered, and I loved that Kaia didn't take the easy route. I'm an instlove kinda girl, but it wouldn't have fit. Instalove would have weirdly glorified and justified the pain and torture Evie survived. Having Evie explore her pure rage was a brilliant call. Also, I loved how much I learned about Vaughn. This book is absolutely NOT a stand alone. Very well done Ms. Bennett.

"Doing It To Death: Shivers and Sins Volume 2" by Kaia Bennett

ARC Copy provided in exchange for an honest review

Yay, book 2 of the Shivers and Sins series is here! This book continues Jesse and Evie's story from book 1, "Die By The Drop". Jesse is still conflicted over what he did to Evie at the lake, and he wants to make it right. He doesn't know how to make it right or, where Evie is so he can make it right. He desperately wants to undo what he did to Evie at the lake.

Evie can't believe what happened to herself at the lake. She wished it never happened and is having a hard time adjusting to her new way of living. She hates Jesse and wants to run as far away from him as possible. With the help of a werewolf name Stark, Evie makes a plan to get herself and her family far away from Jesse. But things don't go according to plan. Jesse and Vaughn find Evie. Before Jesse and Vaughn can hurt Evie or, her family, Stark convinces Jesse that he knows someone who can help undo his mistake. The foursome begin their journey to find help, while trying to avoid other vampires, witches and werewolf's who want to see them dead.

This book is a great dark tale. It has all the darkness and suspense like in the previous book. This book is written from Jesse POV. I like that the reader gets his POV but, a part of me wishes there were a few alternating chapters with Evie's POV, especially in the beginning. I found I had a hard time getting into the Jesse/Evie relationship at the beginning of the book, because I felt their passionate connection was missing. The connection between the two at the beginning of the story felt detached. In the previous book there always seemed to be an element of passion between Jesse and Evie, whether they loved or, hated each other. However, in the beginning of this book I found that element missing in their relationship/connection with one another. The connection between the two characters felt like embers of a flame (but it doesn't last...thankfully), instead of a hot roaring fire. I also had a hard time with the chapters involving Masilda. I found these chapters a little boring. It felt like information overload with vampire, witch, and werewolf legend/mythology. I felt overwhelmed by this information and I really just wanted the story to keep moving with the chase and hunt, love and hate, and survive or die elements of the story. In later chapters I found the legend/mythology of vampire, witch and werewolf's were more evenly distributed with the other elements of the story. So I found I enjoyed the later chapters more.

I also found the violence and gore was tame in comparison to the first book. Which I much prefer. But, make no mistake there is still violence and gore. And there is suspense. A lot of it. The chase and hunt in this book had my adrenaline going. I was biting my nails and kicking my feet whenever a character was placed in a dangerous situation. I was crossing my fingers and toes hoping Jesse, Evie, Stark and even Vaughn would survive. I really enjoyed reading anything the foursome was involved in. They had a camaraderie that was infectious. But, my favourite parts of the book always involve Jesse and Evie. There are some really HOT, HOT, HOT scenes with these two...mmm.

The book does have a few predictable moments, but it also has many shocking twist and turns. There were many times my jaw fell to the floor when an unexpected surprise or revelation occur. I throughly enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend this book to other readers. Now, the wait for book 3...ugh...tick, tick, tick...
