Kathryn Shay

Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.

Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."

Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.

Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-one books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.

Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.

Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. "My life is very full," she reports, "but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams."

Man makes plans and God laughs.

“Gabe, you’re forty-five, you probably have about five more years in protective. So you’ll be fifty, and what do you end up with? By then, Macy will have found someone else.”

“And I end up alone. But I can’t give up my second chance to get the PPD.”

“I have a chance to restore my reputation in the department. It’s important to me. Besides, I miss the action.”

Kathryn Shay is an author I enjoy, although some of her books work better for me that others. While I liked the book overall, I did think the slow burn story for Gabe and Macy developed a little too slowly and I was not totally invested in them at the end of the book.

Kathryn Shay tells what seems to be a really authentic story about the life of a Secret Service agent, the choices they need to make, and the risks inherent in being in a relationship with someone who, by the nature of their job, risks their life on a daily basis.

All of this was great, and there were a few scenes (especially one in the hammock) that really were romantic and you believed in the relationship, there was just too much of the stay away part of the book for me to be really engaged with them as a couple.

This is a continuation of a series about a family of agents and while not necessary to have read the previous one, it does help as there is not a lot of Gabe's history in this book, but you do need to know it to understand his main conflict.

I do recommend the book, overall.

Kathryn Shay has a masterful way of weaving together amazing stories that will grip you from page one and not let go. Gabe Marino's Secret Service career took a deep dive after his team made a major mistake, moving him from Protection Detail to the Training Center, teaching incoming recruits for the Service. While he loves teaching, his heart has always been set on Protection. He is finally offered the opportunity after saving the Presidents sister but will it be everything that he wanted?
Macy Stevens is a single mom after her husband is killed working for the Secret Service. Her life now revolves around her son and their restaurant, something she is perfectly content with, or so she thinks. Living close to the training facility Gabe teaches at, he becomes a fixture in their lives and a friend that she has come to count on. When friendship turns to more, will she be able to open herself up to love again, especially with a man who has chosen the same profession that took her husband's life?
Kathryn Shay has been a long-time favorite author but it's been a while since I have read one of her books, something that I will never let happen again. From the depth of her characters to the fluidity of her writing, her books are always a pleasure to read. Say You'll Stay was no different. I love that Macy has a special needs son, not something you see often in books these days. I love that the relationship change from friends to lovers was not something that happened in a two pages, but that the sensuality was allowed to build until I thought my Kindle would smoke. For me, this book was a very quick read because I just did not want to put it down. I cannot wait to see where the series takes us next! While this is book 2 in the Protect and Serve series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone.

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, secrets, suspense, and heartbreak.

If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
Above and Beyond (To Serve and Protect #1)

This is Macy and Gabe’s story. When his team messed up a mission he became a disgraced Secret Service Agent. But after proving himself in solving a case for the president he might be able to get what he always wanted a spot protecting the president. But at what cost? He is falling for a woman who does not want to be with a man who might be taken from her. Can he give up the woman and her child for something he wanted all his life or really compared to her it is no longer a dream he wants? Or will he lose her before he ever gets a chance to make a choice?

I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I recommend this book.

I really enjoyed the secret service and Macy and Gabe’s story. I did not enjoy the graphic sex scenes or the language. The language was mostly used by her son who has oppositional defiance disorder, so that was a part of his disorder. I loved the way they worked with Simon. Rated R+

When it comes to the Marino clan, being an overachiever is nothing new. Danger is part of their lives, and being a hero is second nature. But for Gabe Marino, his achievements are tinged in bitterness and disgrace. One mistake cost him his career, and stuck him as the Director of the Secret Service Training Center. Aiding his brother and helping to take down a bunch of rogue cops has given him the path back that he always wanted to walk. Being part of the Presidential Protection Detail, or PPD, is the top job that any Secret Service Agent could obtain and now it is being handed to him.

Macy knows the dangers that are involved with loving someone who is part of the PPD. They are gone constantly and there is the very real fact that they may not come home at all. And that is a hell that she has already lived through. Even though she doesn’t want to go back into a situation in which she will be left alone again, she can’t help but fall for Gabe. He is very loving and strong. He treats her and her son well and he does everything he can to make sure that he is a rock she can count on. But will he still be a rock when he is whisked around the world with the President?

The one thing that is tinging Gabe’s world with remorse is that if he follows his dream he could lose Macy and Simon. Macy has had enough heartache in losing her husband and dealing with the pain and anger issues that Simon is going through. Training recruits for the Secret Service is a challenge on its own, but it is fulfilling. However, it is nothing like the rush of protecting the President or Vice President. Gabe has never had a harder decision placed in his path, follow his dream or create a new one with Macy and Simon?

SAY YOU’LL STAY was scrumptious! I was so drawn to Gabe in ABOVE AND BEYOND. He was dealt a bad hand for something others did, but he assumed the responsibility for it and lost a part of himself. But he never gave up and he continued to try to obtain his redemption, which he totally deserved. His character is a deep one and once you are within the realm of his heart, you will be hooked! And Macy is such a strong female character. She handled the hurdles thrown at her and continued to fight for her future. SAY YOU’LL STAY did not have the same thread of danger as ABOVE AND BEYOND, but it is a love story through and through. I laughed at times, and I shed a tear or two. Wonderfully emotional and well written. Kathryn Shay has another winner!

Gabe Marino has been living as a disgraced Secret Service Agent since his elite team messed up, and all he wants to do is get out from under the shame, so when he helps the POTUS solve a case involving the beloved sister, he's about to be vindicated, as he's offered a spot on POTUS' Protection Detail. While he's been teaching at the training center in the meantime, he's gotten to know Macy Stevens and her son, while growing quite close to them. And as just as he's about to leave for the White House, the simmering sparks decide to light up the sky between the two of them. Now he's conflicted, as he has strong feelings for her, but he refuses to give up the opportunity to restore his reputation, even if that means he loses her, and she won't marry another agent who is on the front lines of the kill zone. I'm a relatively new fan girl of Kathryn Shay, as I discovered her when I read Above and Beyond, and I instantly fell in love with her brilliant writing style. So I was super excited for the next book in the To Serve and Protect series, and she didn't let me down at all! Say You'll Stay is another masterpiece that I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough, while my heart raced cover to cover. Gabe is just as drool worthy as his brother, and I fell in instant love/lust. And I loved Macy and her high maintenance son, (who had my eyes leak more than once), although, I did want to shake them more than once for the stubbornness on both of their parts. However, together they were smokin' when the sparks finally caught fire. And I don't want to forget the well placed humor that kept me laughing throughout. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE of this story, but I cannot lie, I NEED the next story ASAP, as I'm trippin' with the hints I got. Bottom line is that I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Review for Say You'll Stay ( To Serve and Protect ) by Kathryn Shay

####4####

This story will take the reader into the lives of Gabe, Macy and Simon. Gabe has been Macy's rock since her husband was killed in the line of duty. Gabe has fought his way back from the incident that left him with guilt and blame. Gabe has faced his demons but now he must make a choice, one that he never saw coming.
Macy has endured the grief of losing her husband, but has relied on Gabe and his friendship to help Simon, her son. With Simon's difficulty with controlling his emotions, Gabe has a way with Simon that calms him.
When Macy and Gabe give in to their feelings for one another, Simon doesn't take it well, but actually implodes when Gabe tells Macy what his new assignment is. Macy seems lost, she can't loose anyone else and gives Gabe his space to come to a decision about where he wants to be.

The emotional pull of love, loss and hope will keep you turning each page. Reliving Macy's loss of her husband, their relationship that left her somewhat empty, to the wanting to live again that Gabe brings forth. Simon's ability to overcome his obstacles and the earning of trust and to
Gabe's final decision concerning his future, with or without Macy and Simon.

Very intriguing, full of love and support. This book left me smiling and waiting for the next one.

Say You'll Stay by Kathryn Shay
"Love underfoot, 4 stars"

I started crushing on Gabe in Above and Beyond (for the record you do not need to read Above and Beyond before Say You'll Stay, but I recommend it). He was the misunderstood, serious older brother. He got the short end of the stick and wears other peoples mistakes. He takes blame where he shouldn't and is more giving then most. Finally his time on the Secret Service black list is coming to an end and he can make his name "clean" again by protecting the President. But its not so cut and dry. Will he get his dream job or will he find that he's clearly meant to be elsewhere?
Macy lost her husband thanks to his job as a Secret Service agent. She has a son who has behavior issues and life is just hectic. Her one bright spot is her friend Gabe. Everything is easier when hes around, shes been in love with him for years. But she can't lose another love to the Secret Service, leaving her holding back.
When Gabe and Macy get it together and get together they fall hard and fast. They transition from friends to lovers flawlessly. Although the relationship isn't without its problems. Can they handle it?I enjoyed Say You'll Stay and can't wait for the next book in the series.

Gabe Marino lost the job he really loved as a Secret Service Agent after a foul up in South America. After helping his brother, Nick, solve a case regarding the President of the USA’s sister, Gabe is offered whatever job he wants. He wants back in the Secret Service.

Macy Stevens and her son, Simon, have been friends with Gabe for years and when they finally admit they want more than friendship from each other this puts a kink in Gabe’s plans for his new job.

Kathyrn Shay writes wonderful stories about family, everyday life, heartache, healing and starting over. She throws in a wonderful love story for good measure. I really loved Gabe’s character right from the start. He was a strong man with an amazing character, strong sense of family and friends. I also liked Macy’s character right from the start although I did get frustrated with her pulling away from Gabe after she agreed to the relationship. Simon was a great addition to the story. He was a child with issues who connected with Gabe. The relationship between Simon and Gabe added so much to the story. The inside look at the Secret Service was an interesting addition to the story line. This was such a wonderful love story that I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait for the other Marino family stories.

I received an ARC for an honest review.

I just love anything Ms Shay writes and this one proves to be another winner.
This series centers around the Marino clan, all are in professions in which they dedicate their lives to serving and protecting.
In this story, we have Gabe and Macy. Gabe is currently the director and an instructor of the Secret Service Training Center a position he was thrown into, after he lost is post in the protective detail of the president. Macy is the widow of a man that was in the Protective Detail and died in the line of duty. Their relationship develops but not without obstacles and angst.
Their story is complex and that is what I love about this talented author’s books. She emphasizes the importance of family, loyalty, service and respect. Her characters , and these are no exception, are flawed but with big hearts. They are loyal, yet stubborn and all are honorable men and women. Life is not black and white but different shades of gray and that also makes this book “real”. You can tell Ms Shay has researched the life and ins and outs of the Secret Service to the point that your perception of these dedicated men and women might change. You will want to thank them and their families for their service and sacrifices.
As far as I am concerned, another winning story worth your time.
I was gifted this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own

Gabe, oldest of the Marino brothers, was removed from his protection detail responsibilities after a scandal at the Secret Service. He has worked at the Training Facility since that embarrassment, bringing new agents along.

He has the opportunity to move back to Protection when his brother Nick opts to be closer to his family. Nick is asked to form a new task force on police training. He asks for, and receives, permission to co-head the TF with Gabe. Meanwhile, Gabe has realized that he is in love with the widow of another agent, who is wary of him. First, she struggles with her son who is emotionally fragile. Also, her husband was killed while on protection detail and she doesn't ever want to go through that pain again.

Gabe is very good with Simon and he cares for the fragile child a lot. Some of you familiar with Shay's work can probably figure what could go wrong here, but I'll let you figure it out. There is an HEA and a lot of things have to happen in order to make it come true. I like the way that the author brings the Marino parents into these books, and shows the toll the dangerous work takes on the parents, as well as the children.

Some old friends also make an appearance at the Secret Service Training Facility, and it's good to hear from them. Well done second entry to the series.

Say You'll Stay is the second book in a series of standalones. The first book ( Above and Beyond )does not need to be read to understand and enjoy Say You'll Stay, but I would recommend it as Gabe is introduced in that book.

Gabe is a brooding hero. He absorbs blame, even when he shouldn't. He's carried things on his shoulders that no one should. He has a connection with Macy's son that is beautiful, as beautiful as it can be with a moody ten year old involved. Macy is tough. She's an entrepreneur. She's an amazing single mother, doing it on her own, with a high needs child.

I loved these two together. The spirit and chemistry between them was so much fun to read. Their relationship evolved in a realistic way. Say You'll Stay is well written and keeps you hooked from the first page.

Say You’ll Stay ( To Serve and Protect #2 )
By: Kathryn Shay
Say You’ll Stay is book two in To Serve and Protect series. Shay has a way of drawing you in right at the start and you are hooked. Shay weaves a story that will have you on the edge of your seat trying to read faster to see what is going to happen next. Gabe Marino has messed up and has been a disgraced to the Secret Service Agent. He did help out in solving the case where the President’s sister was involved and got him back on track again. Macy’s husband worked in the Secret Service Agent and was killed. She is trying to raise her son, Simon , who has a behavior problem. Gabe has know them for a long time and feels like it is his problem to help watch out for them. This is another fast Paced emotional story. There are sparks that fly between Macy and Gabe. He is after building his reputation back up ,and she cannot get involved with another Secret Service Agent. What will they do?
I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but was not told that I had to give a positive review.

Gabe’s last mission with Secret Service did not end well but his assistance in the helping the US President and his sister has helped rebuild his reputation and he has been offered a position on his staff however it will require a move to Washington.

Macy is a single mother to a challenging son and she is also a widow who lost her husband while he was in the Secret Service.

While Gabe was teaching at the training center they have become friends and it is developing into something more but she is not prepared to lose another man to the Service and his goal of joining the President’s staff is within reach so where do they go from here?

Both Gabe and Macy are strong and independent but the connection, chemistry and humor in their interactions jump off the page. I look forward to the next installment in the Marino family. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Gabe is trying to overcome a past where he lost his dream job, respect and confidence. He became close to a widow and her son (Macy and Simon) whose husband was an agent killed on duty. His family includes several secret service agents that worked together to bring down a corrupt police ring which gets him attention to get the assignment he really wants, protecting the President. Several obstacles delay his new job and in the meantime he and Macy admit their feelings for each other. She is scared to love him because of his new job because she lost one husband but doesn't want to ask him to decline the offer because he's worked so hard to be offered the position. This is the 2nd book in the series and although it isn't necessary to read them in order, it does help to better understand the dynamics and history of the Marino family. Awesome series, definitely recommend! I voluntarily read a complimentary ecopy from the author for an honest review.

SAY YOU'LL STAY by Kathryn Shay "To Serve and Protect" book 2
Gabe asking for protective detail assignment again. With all the changes he always enjoyed being with Macy, after she closed the restaurant she owned. Spending time with her son Simon, whose having a hard time dealing with life without a father, and emotional issues in general. A meeting with the teachers at Simon school, and a teacher flirting with Gabe. Opens the boxes, both hadn't wanted to open. She didn't want another agent for a husband. He was attracted to Macy, career and marriage didn't work, tried that once. This story gives you the inside life of being an agent, as well as the choices being made to be part of this elite group . The emotions of family can they deal with the separations. Very well done by Kathryn Shay. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

I'm loving this series by Kathryn Shay! Say You'll Stay is the second book in the To Serve and Protect series and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books in the series.
Gabe Marino's plan was to get back to PPD after being removed five years ago after his team messed up badly under his supervision, but unexpected issues have come up at the training center and leaving Macy and Simon Stevens behind is becoming more difficult.
Macy Stevens and her son Simon have grown to rely on Gabe ever since he stepped up to help after his friend and her husband was killed on PPD. What started out as friendship has now become something more and they are all having a difficult time with him changing his detail with the Secret Service.

I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Say You'll Stay is full of strong characters that are truly nice people as they interact with each other. Gabe is an instructor at the Secret Service Training Facility for new agents after taking the blame for a detail that went bad, that wasn't his fault. Macy is a survivor with a special needs son, Simon. Her late husband was killed in the line of duty as a Secret Service agent.

Simon is full of surprises, learning to control his impulses and growing toward becoming a nice young man with the help of Gabe. The three main characters love each other and are working toward becoming a family within the framework of the Secret Service and the duty the job requires. It was a great book.

Can a family be more important than a job?

Kathryn Shay has produced another winner. Her hero and heroine are real people who have to deal with the fears and problems that I found understandable. I sympathized with coping with a child who has behavioral problems, and respected the way those were dealt with. I understand being torn between a job you think is vital and for which you have trained for years. Most of all, I enjoyed all the secondary people who populate this book. Every one had my respect and admiration as they worked on their problems with honor and joy. An exceptional book that was a pleasure to read, as a standalone story and as part of a series.

I received a free copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

Ms. Shay does it again. This is a thoroughly captivating book. Once you start, you will not be able to stop. Gabe is faced with a choice: family or his dream job. The choice is a heavy one. Macy has already lost one husband to the job, is she strong enough to possibly lose another? The feelings that these two go through is so accurately and thought provoking, I felt like I was right there. The reader becomes one with the scene like going to the movies. I loved the dual POVs, the plot, the addition of the Marino family. This was HIGHLY enjoyable.

I highly recommend this book to anyone!!!

This is the 2nd book in this amazing series, and is Gabe and Macy’s story. Gabe is a disgraced secret service agent, and Macy was married to an agent, and the last thing she wants to do is get involved with another one. The chemistry between these two is instant and steamy. No spoiler give this one a go for yourself, you will not be disappointed!
This is a well written storyline which flows seamlessly, and I was hooked and intrigued throughout. Another brilliant story from an extremely talented author!

I had previously read book 1, ABOVE AND BEYOND of the Serve and Protect series by author Kathryn Shay. Because of the exciting Secret Service intrigue and story around new found lovers, I was looking forward to another Secret Service based story that obviously would include a love story. While I enjoyed the romance between Gabe and Macy, and Gabe’s relationship with Macy’s son Simon (dealing with mental challenges). I was looking towards a story with of Secret Service intrigue, which didn’t happen. Maybe that will come back in book 3, SAY YOU’LL STAY.

We don't ball realize what agents give up on their personal lives to do the job they do. But Gabe was on VPPD when some agents went and he got blamed. Now he has been Director of the training facility for agents for 5 years and has gotten close to Macey & her son Simon. Her husband died 5 years ago. Now they finally admitting feelings he has been offered a position with PPD and he has to decide.

Gabe, is a Secret Service agent, and Macy is the widow of a fellow officer. No way do they want to let the attraction they have for each other surface. Kathryn Shay write a romance novel with enough realism in the lives of her characters that you will not be able to put the book down! It's heartwarming to have Gabe and Macy's young son find a connection in the midst of Macy and Gabe's evolving relationship. I recommend this book for those interested in strong male and female characters

What do we really know about the Secret Service

Kathryn Shay's books are always interesting and riveting. Gabe is running the training center for Secret Service agents, trying to make up for something on his watch as Special Agent in Charge. Macy's husband was killed in the line of duty. Several years have passed and she doesn't want to be involved with someone who could die in the line of fire. Lots aspects public doesn't know about training agents to protect.

This book reads like a Danielle Steele novel, easy and interesting. Except this series is about the protective service. And, unlike D.S. Just deals with a circumstance, not a whole lifetime of a family.

I have it a 4 because the story was a bit confusing with all the family members. They are on the serious side not like Lisa Scottolines Italian families where there always joking and it makes you laugh.

I’m going to read more of the continuum series.

Gabe Marino has been friends with Macy since her husband was killed in the line of service. Over the years their friendship has grown into more but are they ready to take their relationship to the next level? Will Macy's son accept Gabe as his friend and father? Catch up with the rest of the Marino clan and enjoy Gabe and Macy's story.

Good story

I love Kathryn What's books. They always provide good entertainment. This one is no different. Gabe Marino is in the Secret Service at the training center after messing up on a protection detail. All he wants is to get back. Meanwhile he excels at the training center and befriends a young boy who is traumatized after his father is killed while in the Secret Service.
