Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.

Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."

Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.

Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-one books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.

Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.

Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. "My life is very full," she reports, "but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams."

I liked the story.
I removed one star because the ex-husband did not have proper punishment. He remained free and living close to her family. He should have been destroyed.

Her child stood before her. One eye was closed shut, one cheek purplish, and her shoulder drooped as if it had been dislocated. “I would hug you, sweetheart, but it will hurt too much.”

“Of course you won’t. You will never go back to him! Never. This I promise you. I will protect you now.”

In the last two months since Callandra Gentileschi sought him out in D.C., he’d been unable to shake the notion that he could be with her now. But he’d said no. After what happened to him the first time she left, a reconciliation was too big a risk.

“A man who would beat his wife could do anything.”

“He raped you?” “It wasn’t rape in my country. An old law that still exists in the...

“Papá always protected me. Except from this. How could he not help?” “Because he’s a monster.” Connor’s face had flushed and his tone was angry. “As is Lorenzo.”

Calla sighed. “Whitney, this won’t reflect well on Papá.” “Be strong, Calla. He didn’t protect you, so you have to protect yourself.”

Calla’s hands trembled. Papá knew of abuse happening several other times? He did nothing to protect them, either?

“You could call her.” “No, I can’t. As I said, I’ve got to move on. Without her.”

Not for Me

I usually thoroughly enjoy Katharine Shay's books, this for me was the exception.
I just couldn't get into the story - too much flitting back in time and I really didn't connect to the main characters. All in all I thought it was a poor storyline.

Oh dear, I just didn't like this book. I didn't connect with the writing, the structure didn't work for me, and after chapter 1, I skipped to the end. Full disclosure, the very first Kathryn Shay book I read I absolutely adored. It was a wonderful story, well written with compelling characters. Since then however, I've not yet had the same experience with the many other books of hers I've read. I keep thinking I will, so I've kept trying. But more often than not, I've been disappointed. But that is my personal opinion only and I'm sure others would happily disagree with me.

No other Love by Kathryn Shay
“Love that crosses boarders, 5 stars”

Connor and Calla fell in love when they shouldn’t have. She has obligations to her country and he is not part of her father’s plan for her future. Blame it on the circumstances around them. Sometimes when surrounded with grief like they were while with Doctors Without Borders you find solace in each other. Only They fell in love and Calla left.
Connor hasn’t been the same since Calla left him in a war-torn country to marry the man her father had chosen. From his experience love beats all and if she loved him she wouldn’t have chosen her family duty over him. Now he’s back home in the States and with his family. Everyone and everything is changing around him and offers perfect distraction from his disaster of a love life. Until he sees Calla then his world shifts again leaving him off balance. Can Calla and Connor make it this time or is it destined for failure again?
Calla loves Connor but she was taught that the duty for her country comes first. She didn’t expect her marriage to go the way it did. Calla left home with two goals, leave her husband and get Connor back. Only sometimes life gives you more than you can handle. Will she get out of the abusive relationship back home and get the guy she has wanted since she met him? Or will life be unfair again?
Connor is probably my favorite Marino, he is so much more then what we have seen before. These two are forced together and must decide where their loyalties stand. Will Connor get his princess after all this time? No other Love is like a fact overload on how our government operates with abuse victims and seeking asylum. We were seeing a different side then we have before when reading the Serve and Protect series. Shay has one story left in the series then after that I hope she writes Calla’s sisters stories.
Plot- 5/5
Character- 5/5
Heat- 5/5
Writing style- 5/5
Overall- 5/5

A woman is subject to her husband. An antiquated law in Casarina, a sovereign state off the coast of Italy, but a law that is still enforced. And it is a law that has caused Calla Gentileschi, Princess of Casarina, untold horror. Following duty, she left Doctors Without Borders and returned home to marry a man of her father’s choosing so that Casarina could have an heir. The problem is that she also left the love of her life and entered a nightmare of degradation and pain. Fleeing Casarina is her only option, and maybe she can get her second chance with Connor is she is able.

Connor Marino didn’t follow the rest of his overachieving family into protection services, but he did help in saving people another way. Being a doctor has been his passion and saving people his purpose. But his past and what he has seen is getting to him. Losing the woman that he fell in love with devastated him, but it is time to move on with his life. But the past is not ready to allow him to move on when Calla comes back into his life asking for his help. Will Connor be to put aside his pain at her betrayal for his second chance, or will the danger stalking Calla aid in destroying any future they could have?

NO OTHER LOVE is a heart wrenching and tear jerking story. The pain that Calla goes through jumped off of the pages. Her character is such a strong character to be able to overcome what has happened to her, even if she doesn’t see it. And Connor is such a sweet and caring character, but so troubled and hurt by what has happened. These two characters are amazing together and had me rooting for them throughout the book. Even knowing it ends in an HEA doesn’t distract from the angst and situations that culminate to the ending of the book. Awesome book that I would definitely recommend!

This story is book four of Ms Shay’s series, To Serve and Protect. Stories about siblings who have dedicated their lives to serve and protect others, their country and those in need.
This story is Connor’s. Connor is a physician, who spent a year in Syria as part of the Doctors Without Borders program. There he meets Calla. She too is a physician and daughter of the king of a fictitious island off the coast of Italy. She has been promised to a wealthy man in her country but since life is unpredictable, Calla and Connor fall in love. She chooses to return home to fulfill her obligations unbeknown of the consequences she will endure.
She leaves her country and goes to the USA seeking asylum . Connor has been hurt but when she is in trouble he steps in to help.
Though the story wasn’t my favorite, it was interesting . The con for me was that I personally don’t like flashbacks and this one is filled with them. All that said, the message of the book was deep and thought provoking. First, we are reminded of the sacrifices and dedication of the physicians who give of their time to Doctors Without Borders. My hat goes off to them and a big thank you as well. The other point the author brings up is that there are still countries today where women have no rights, are promised to men who might end up abusing them while they have no rights or protection. That reminder was mind boggling and a situation that seems inconceivable. But the reality is that it is happening today.
Once again a reason to be thankful to live in a country where men and women have rights, a voice and support if needed. For that reminder, thank you , Ms Shay.
I was gifted this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Calla is a princess from Casinara who has been completing her education and training in the US to become a Doctor before she returns home to a marriage her father has arranged for her. While assisting with Doctors Without Borders she meets Connor and although she knows that she shouldn’t get involved they fall in love.

Connor knew that she had a marriage arranged back in her country but he believed that their love was stronger than any family obligation and he was devastated when she left him to return home.

Calla’s marriage was far from the fairytale that she was hoping for so she flees her country with her only aim being able to find Connor however he is not willing to take a chance that she will choose her country over him once again. Calla resumes her life without him as she believes she has hurt him enough but when the danger from her past finds her he will do anything to protect her and keep her safe but will he be willing to open up his heart to her again?

I loved both these characters as Connor was so protective despite the hurt that being with her causes and Calla’s original decision to return home was based on her love for her country and her family not because she didn’t love Connor. This is a great addition to the series and it was great to catch up with the characters from the previous books in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

No Other Love: To Serve and Protect Book 4 is by Kathryn Shay. This book is very easy to read and takes very little time. Kathryn Shay has written about the Marino family and those books are great. Now it is Connor’s turn.
Connor was a doctor and was working at Rockford Memorial Hospital with his brother Declan. Connor had just finished working for Doctors Without Borders and hadn’t figured out what he was going to do now. He was trying to figure out what to do with Callandra Gentileschi too. They had broken up and she had gone back home to a small country run by her Father. She had married a man her Father had chosen for her. She had left her husband after being beaten and had returned to the States. She had seen Connor and wanted to reconcile with him but Connor felt it was too big of a risk. She had walked off once for her family and he couldn’t be sure she wouldn’t do that again. It would be worse if they had children. He couldn’t risk that so needed to get over Calla.
Calla didn’t know what to do. She loved Connor but was married. To get an annulment, she had to return home. If she returned home, could she be sure her Father, The King, wouldn’t order her to return to her husband. She couldn’t go through that again. Somehow, she had to get asylum in the United States and then had to get free of her husband. Only then could she try again with Connor.
Who can she trust to help her?

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, secrets, suspense, and heartbreak.

If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
Above and Beyond (To Serve and Protect #1)
Say You'll Stay (To Serve and Protect #2)
Only With You (To Serve and Protect #3)

This is Calla and Connor’s story. Connor has always been a good-natured and great upstanding guy. Now that he is working with Doctors Without Borders he is able to help all over the world. Calla is a princess but was able to become a doctor and work with Doctors Without Borders. This is where these two meet. The fall hard and fast but Calla’s choices for the future are not her own. Her family makes choices about her future that customs of the royal family have her obeying no matter if it shatters her heart in the end. Will she be able to choose and fight for her love for Connor or will it be taking away and she be forced to be with another? Can Connor understand her struggle and help her figure things out or will he leave her before ever fighting for her?

I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I recommend this book.

No Other Love by Kathryn Shay is book 4 in the series To Serve And Protect and for me is without a doubt a five star read.

Absolutely excellent. Wow, what a book. I cried so hard with this one. What an incredible and inspirational story with all the emotions possible. This author is extremley talented and I cannot wait to read more of their work. An absolutely amazing book you will not regret picking up.

I particularly loved the style of the book and it made sure to grab me from the very beginning and hold my attention to the very end.

It's an extremely fast paced book with full of adventure. The characters were very inventive and they make sure to engage you from the start.

First time reading any of this authors work and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a well thought out and interesting story. I found myself looking forward in anticipation to the next scene. The story flowed very well and at the end I wanted more. There are many twists and turns. I did not want to put it down

This book can be enjoyed time and time again.I highly recommend it and I cannot wait to read more from this author.

Will definitely recommend to all friends and family

Connor Marino has always been the sensitive one of the family, and is a total upstanding doctor. As an adult, he joins Doctors Without Borders where he meets Calla Gentileschi, another doctor. They quickly fall in love, but she comes from a royal family, and is a princess, so her life isn't her own. She has to leave him to marry a man that her father has picked out for her. It broke both of their hearts, but she will do her duty to her family. So have the decisions that she's made destroyed both of them completely? This was an emotional read cover to cover, so I found my eyes leaking more than once. I LOVED Connor, like the rest of his family, but I wanted to shake him with all of his stubbornness more than once. And Calla, her duty to family & country, had me yelling out loud as well. The story line was fast paced, and had some serious intensity. Plus, the talented Kathryn Shay couldn't write a story about this family without some serious f-bomb dropping worthy twists & turns! I will NEVER EVER get enough of this amazing family, so I'll be impatiently waiting for more! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

No Other Love ( To Serve And Protect #4)
By: Kathryn Shay
No Other Love is book four in To Serve and Protect Series. Wow, What a story. I really did enjoy No Other Love, but I really felt sorry for Calla , The Princess of Casarina , and Connor. This is one book that I did not want to put down. Calla and Connor meet when both Doctors were working for Doctors Without Borders to help others. They fell for each other , but Calla’s life is not her own . Calla has to marry a man her father chooses for her. Connor hasn’t been the same since Call Left. Things don't go to good for the Princess. Is it to late for her and Connor? The ways of her world is different from his. You will meet back up with the Marion clan. The Marino’s stick together. When one is in trouble they are there to help out.
I was given a complimentary copy off this book , but was not told that I had to give a positive review.

I have loved every series that Kathryn Shay has witten and each book in those series, this series is no different. Each of the Marino siblings has had their own unique story and the remainder of the siblings have stood by their side and shown up in each book. Connor and Calla's story was a little slower I thought than some of the others but I did enjoy the international element - the flashbacks to when they were in Syria and the current story line in Calla's home country. Calla's fight with her father, the King of Casarina and his "old ways" where a husband owns a wife, broke my heart. I thought Calla was a much stronger heoine than Connor was a hero in this book. I really felt for her and her fight for independence at home and her love for Connor. I can't wait to read Declan's book next as I am sure the relationship between he and his ex-wife is very passionate in all their interactions!

Connor and Calla met while serving in Syria with Doctors Without Borders. The two fell in love but because of an archaic law in her home country, she made the painful decision to honor her duty and return home to an arranged marriage and hopefully produce an Heir for her father. Calla's decision proved to be more painful than she ever imagined and fled to the U.S. and back to her only love Connor. Can Connor and Calla find their way back to each other before it is too late?

Join Calla and Connor as they make this journey together, catch up with previous characters and meet a few new ones. I love to read Kathryn. Shay's books. She develops her characters and the storyline to keep you interested and immersed in the story. This is a wonderful story by a wonderful author. I cannot wait until the next book.

No Other Love is the fourth book in Kathryn Shay's To Serve and Protect series. I loved this book just as much as the other ones and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
Callandra and Connor met when they worked in Syria with Doctors Without Borders, but even though their love for one another was simple their lives were not. Callandra was a princess and her life had already been mapped out by her father so her wishes didn't matter when her obligations took precedent.
Connor accepted that Callandra had family and country obligations that she didn't think she could break, but coming to him for help after breaking his heart just seems cruel and opens his heart up again for love and heartache once again.

I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

NO OTHER LOVE. by Kathryn Shay. Book 4 "Protect and Serve"
Calla was a subject of abuse, husband wanted an heir, mainly a son. Her family raised her, that her country, was first. It caused a rift between her parents, until her mother decided to help her. She gave up all, her love for Conner. Now seeking asylum in the US, but Conner, won't see her. Too great of risk, she is still married, and if children were born, the king, might lure her back. A love that shouldn't of happened, Conner feels.
Choices come about, when Calla sister needs her. Then Conner feels that Calla needs him. A powerful story of commentments. To one's country, family, and even love. Readers will enjoy this in depth look, when love is not smooth sailing. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Loved this book. Once again we visit the Marino family, who's careers are to serve and protect. Connor has joined Doctors without Borders and is practicing in Syria when he meets fellow physician, Calla a real life princess. They fall in love, but Calla has an obligation to her country. She must marry whom her father picks. Connor returns home but is never the same since his time in Syria. Calla comes to the United States where there is a rediscovering of their love for each other, but will last this time.

This is fast paced story that I could not put down. Loved thee flash backs from Syria! Great characters with both showing such devotion to their families. Looking forward to reading the next Marino family story.

I love the Marino family books and this one is no different. This story is about Conner and a love from his past while he was working with Doctors Without Borders. Callandra Gentileschi is a Princess but also a doctor. She and Conner had a strong connection but when she had to go back to do her duty by marrying a man her father, the King, has chosen this almost destroys Conner. After abuse and escaping his man, Calla goes to DC where she asks Conner for a second chance.

Kathryn Shay writes stories that have pain, heartache and tears but she also throws in a big helping of loving families, love, laughter, strength and happy too. This is a great plot with wonderful characters. No Other Love is a great addition to the Marino family stories.

This is the 4th book in this amazing series and is Connor and Calla’s story. These two are both doctor’s for the “Doctors Without Borders” organization, and they fell in love with each other. Unfortunately they shouldn’t have, as Calla is a Princess, with obligations to her country and family. No spoilers; this is a must read in my opinion, you will not be disappointed!
This is an emotional and wonderful story written by this extremely talented author, and I was hooked from the very beginning. Kathryn is one of my favourite author’s, and I highly recommend her work for all romance readers.

Another wonderful story by Ms. Shay about the Marino family! In this book we learn the story of a brother who isn't in the FBI but is a Dr. and his relationship with Calla. I don't want to spoil the story for others but know that you will truly enjoy this story and love how the Marino's interact with each other and are always so supportive of each sibling. Ms. Shay's does a fantastic job with her characters and storylines, even those stories with delicate subjects. This is book 4 in the Series but can be read without reading the others. I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing and recommending.

How can a royal princess and an ordinary doctor get together

Kathryn Shay doesn’t write easy to read books, but she is always true to her characters, their personalities and their settings. Reading about spousal abuse and laws that protect the abuser was hard. I loved Connor and Calla. The love between them was tangible and real. The King and his independent wife were superbly portrayed as were the U.S. president and his family.

Another love story that depicted real people with real problems but whose love struggles to overcome the difficulties they each face in being a couple.

I’m not a big fan of royal characters, especially from made up countries. I didn’t give this book enough of a chance to actually rate it but I could tell pretty quickly that it was not for me.

Ironically, I’m fairly picky about book covers and I picked this book partly because I really liked the cover. I like books that involve doctors. I don’t know what it’s gonna take for me to stop judging books by their covers! It rarely works out for me.

Another great book in the To Serve and Protect Series.
Connor and Calla Gentileschi were the perfect couple for this book. They met during a stressful time in Syria. They fell hard for each other when they first met and
they tried not to but was more difficult than they expected. Life was not always as simple as they wanted, but sometimes things fall into place when they are least expected.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next one.

When you can’t get out of your own way

A wonderful telling of love and family. Two people who love but don’t understand each other quite yet. The story of how they come together, come apart, and finally find their way to happiness. Along the way lots of well imagined characters learn things about themselves and manage to grow in both wisdom and spirit. More than most modern romance novels this is a fairytale.

The angst in this story is palpable, Calla and Connor had practically a Love at First Sight beginning that was not to be, yet. Their journey to an HEA is fraught with emotional heartache but a good read.
