Jack Raus is a blacksmith and Guardian of the fortified city of Revdagrad, the only place of safety for humankind in a world surrounded of chaos and endless night. An ancient deity threatens to destroy the very foundation of what Jack has sworn to protect, so he must embrace the legacy of his ancestors and become a Knight of the Light.
But power always comes with a price, and Jack must serve Zephyr, an elemental deity, mystical, secretive, and bent on retribution at any cost.
is there anything worse than writing a 3 star review
this was an enjoyable little novella, but there wasn't anything particularly interesting or new going on, or any particularly good plot twists, so i didn't really feel it merited 4 stars. i still liked it, though.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
This book stared out really great, but then I felt like the later half just skimmed over a lot of plot explanation and character development and it really would have benefited from an extra 25 pages. But it was still a really great concept and I liked the characters from what we saw of them. It's a fun short read but it definitely could use some fleshing out.
This was unusual for me. Normally I can fight my way to the end of a novella because of how short it is, but I struggled with this one. When I had to put it down for a short break, I had absolutely no desire to pick it up again. Several days on, I’m finally admitting defeat. I simply have no interest in finishing this book.
I don’t know if it was because I was tired, but I couldn’t connect with this one. There are some interesting ideas here – Jack’s guardianship of the city and his connection to it, the old gods, the sky metal, the elementals – but none of it is explained particularly well. The story almost takes it for granted that you’ll just follow along, content to have things just be, rather than trying to build the world for you. But I want this world built for me, because it sounded interesting.
I’m also not a fan of capturing something against it’s will and somehow turning that into a romance, especially in a restricted novella form. Because this is short, a lot of things get jumped over, especially when Zephyr first appears. Jack’s supposed to be the one serving, yet Zephyr is the one chained to a body? We didn’t really get much getting to know you time, the plot just glossed over their early days together, and there’s some sort of hint towards reincarnation, at least that’s what it felt like with Zephyr talking about remembering and Jack having these strange old dreams. Which was where I left it and decided I didn’t really want to know how it ended.
