A scrapbooking best seller! You know that "graphic designer style" you didn't think you could pull off without going to design school? Now you can scrapbook like a graphic designer. With her signature style, Cathy Zielske shares expert ideas on design, photography, journaling and typography in Clean and Simple Scrapbooking.
This book was a total disappointment. This author's idea of clean and simple is black and white photos and computer generated text. So, only make albums in 8-1/2" x 11" because it will fit in your average ink jet printer (page 26). And print only black and white photos so you will not have to worry about clashing or coordinating your papers, text colors or embellishments with your photos.
Another annoying reflection in this book is that a large number of the photos are of the same faces over and over throughout the book. I felt like I was looking at the author's personal album, not an example of techniques. Obviously, this was not a collaborative effort using a variety of talent to appeal to the variety of scrapbookers. I concluded that the author just got you to pay for looking at her personal album. I recommend you spend your money on a book that has something for more styles and tastes, rather than this narrowly focused book.
Cathy is super talented and very down to earth. Her style is fun, fresh, and realistic. She has excellent suggestions and enables you to feel free to break out of the box - especially if you're in the scrapping every single picture chronologically and sticking to events rather than moments. I've been very inspired to try new things.
Cathy Zielske is a very funny lady! She writes easily and accesible and makes beautifully simple pages, one-photo layouts, often black and white photos, 8,5x11. Some of the main focuses in the book is typography and finally, I got around to try her theory about leading, and must say, I loved the result!
Every scrapbooker should read this! Cathy is an amazing designer, and she uses the design principles in her scrapbooking. After you read this book, you'll know how to use those principles in your own layouts, making them better (and really, you can keep your own style, though I must say I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cathy's style).
Although some of the materials and products and styles are a little outdated, Cathy Zielske's simple designs are CLASSIC, beautiful and so inspirational. The information in the book is timeless as well and nicely detailed. The bad thing - now I miss Simple Scrapbooks Magazine even more! Off to get volume 2...
With all the trends in scrapbooking, it's wonderful to see someone with a style that won't take hours and tons of $ to imitate. Cathy Z. offers the basics in scrapbooking, and everyone from the novice to the expert can benefit from her guidance.
This book is so helpful. It's full of color pictures of layouts that use a more minimalist approach (not a lot of crazy doodads all over the place). I really like her approach of using fewer, larger photos with a lot of journaling.
Cathy Zielske is, in a word, amazing. Her wit and wisdom is awesome. I love her layouts and enjoyed learning about her creative process. I have Clean and Simple: the Sequel and can't wait to start reading.
