When the Union navy fires on Charleston, Emily must flee to Ella Wood—and to a father who has never forgiven her for attending the Maryland Institute against his will. There, she grapples with Jack’s secret plans for the plantation and his final admonition that she carry them to fruition. But as a woman under the authority of her father, evoking even the slightest change may prove too much to hope for.
In the meantime, old jealousies place Emily’s life in danger, and her desperate hopes for Jovie’s safe return begin to fade. As the war rumbles to its conclusion, she must draw upon every ounce of courage in a final bid for love and freedom.

Ebb Tide brings Michelle Isenhoff’s Ella Wood trilogy to a powerful conclusion. It is an emotional YA novel with secrets and many unexpected outcomes. The prose is beautiful, the language is rich and the dialogue lively. The trilogy has been an ambitious undertaking for the author and fans will be deeply satisfied with her third novel.
As Emily faces the destruction of Charleston, the uncertainty for Ella Wood, the loss of loved ones and shattered dreams. The rich cast of characters are tender and lovable, while others are abusive and gritty. And Isenhoff doesn’t let you rest until all of their fates are known. Readers will be satisfied.
The plot is riveting, dangerous and deliberately paced with nonstop adventures. There are tragic incidents at Ella Wood. Emily’s responsibilities increase as the Union Army presence threatens livelihood at Ella Wood. Finishing her art studies at the Baltimore Institute seems out of reach. And Jovie is missing in action.
Ebb Tide is well-researched and offers readers a penetrating look into the emotional landscape of the south, its role in the civil war, customs, culture, the suppression of women’s rights, the searing treatment of slaves and freedom for other slaves.
I will not summarize this story because it is already given in the description of this book. The purpose of this review is to give potential readers information to make an informed decision about reading this book.
What I liked:
*The setting, which took place in Charleston and Baltimore. *The interesting historical facts about photography. *All of the books characters were well defined and interesting. They brought to life the story. *Emily's independence and her desire to be trained as an artist. Sometimes I wanted to shake Emily for her stubborn single mindedness. *Emily's selfless concern for her family and the slaves. *The love story between Emily and Jovie. *The vivid pictures that the artist painted with her words. *The editing was well done, especially hard for an indy author. *This was a clean read, which I really appreciated. *A lot of historical background is given, which seamlessly blends in.
I highly recommend this book to historical fiction readers.
What can I say? I loved this series. Michelle brings characters to life. Each side of the Civil War was brought to life in this moving account; as well as, all of the character that makes up humanity. Some good & some bad apples, prejudices, and long standing traditions tinge this book with frank authenticity. You get a sense of the struggle of everyday living for all socioeconomic classes. Yet though the struggle is there, Michelle weaves an endearing story line with such colorful characters that leave you turning page after page in a hurry to find out what will become of them. The despicable prove to be very despicable, the honorable prove themselves human, and the redeemable are there as well. What a great series. I am sad to see it end, but I also need some sleep now, lol. Thank you Michelle! You have been blessed with great talent!
This is the continuing story of Emily, a young, independent woman during the time of the Civil War. She has put her dreams and schooling on hold due to all the turmoil and returns home to her father's plantation. She has been estranged from him but when tragedy strikes she has to take on a much more active role running the plantation. Emily is determined to one day be able to free the slaves. At the same time, she is trying to locate her lost love, Jovie, who has gone missing in action. I just adore this series. This book is very well-written and hard to put down.
This chapter begins with Emily on her way back to her home at Elle Wood. Charleston is under constant attack. Will her father welcome her home? What about her education in Baltimore? Will that continue? How will the civil war and changing mindsets on slavery all play into events? What about her changing thoughts about Jovie? The author, Michelle Isenhoff, once again creates a very engaging story that is so well thought out and intriguing that it is very hard to stop reading. There is so much story to enjoy.
This was a bit choppier than the first two books, with a few awkward time gaps between chapters, but it was equally addicting and turned out to be the perfect ending to this series.
I love the development of Emily throughout these books, from a naive 16-year-old to a significantly more mature young adult. In Ebb Tide, she struggles not only with her own future but also with how to make a difference on a larger scale.
If you're a fan of historical fiction, I highly recommend Ella Wood!
*I received a free ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Starting book 3 today. Book 2 was REALLY Great. I couldn't put it down. Looking forward to starting this book in a few minutes. Done! I liked it a lot. One character was truly a total pain in the ass. . .through all three books. I'll you figure it out who. Another quick read. Truly liked the series about the Civil War and about Great forward thinking women. I truly liked books 2 and 3 much better than book 1. All the struggles of the Civil War is really something else. So many died and suffered. Emily is amazing in this book and I loved her character so much. I loved her she taught everyone to read and write and let them go free against her parent's wishes. She was amazing.
I read all three of the books. I enjoyed each and every one. I highly recommend them all. And if I paid for these books you know they are good!!!!!!!! 😁😁😁😁😁😁
This is the conclusion to the Ella Wood series and I am sad it is over. I have enjoyed following Ellie as she has grown into her own and fought her battles during the Civil War that devastated her home and family. She has struggled with her own traditions versus her conscience and has gone against her father to the point of being thrown out of her own home. This book shows both sides and brings actual history into the story. It is well written and kept my attention from book one until the end of this one. I am sad the story is over as I would enjoy more. There are mysteries, tragedies, danger, and hope for love. I enjoyed it and highly recommend this series.
