I received this story as part of a promotional give away in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is a hard on for me to review. I've never been much of a horror fan, though due to my love of The Walking Dead, and my continuing quest to start reading outside my comfort level, I gave The Last Crawl a chance (after first reading Necroville, the prequel short story). For much of the story, I was pulling for our heroes, but when the end came about, I felt unsatisfied. Unless there were hints that it was coming sprinkled throughout the story, it came from nowhere. I don't like to add spoilers to my reviews, so I won't ruin it for anyone. Suffice it to say, it wasn't any kind of ending I was expecting. The humor was liberally spread through every page, though sometimes it felt a bit forced. Overall, it lived up to its promise. I got a fair number of chuckles, guffaws and one or two genuine LOLs. Being an American, there were aspects of British culture that went past me, but it didn't seem to hurt the story. Perhaps it helped that I am a fan of many BBC series.
I will continue on with the series, if for no other reason than to understand what the hell happened at the end of this story. Give it a go and read Necroville and The Last Crawl. Your experience may well be different than mine, and if so, I'd love to hear your take on the ending.
Should have title something like Necroville Novelette, not that I personally mind but most people don't read the page count, which I didn't because got a free copy from one of my sites so really what did that matter. Interesting little story nonetheless. Pretend Zombies and not so pretend zombies and a whole lot of trouble.
Got an ARC which is free book and they send it to you early and really hope you like it or even don't like it but get time to review it for this one. No you don't have to read the first one first, but this one has a bit about what happened before. It's sort of like college kids mixed with shaun of the dead but not exactly, but if you are looking for offbeat even for zombie type book, this would be it. {Personally wavered a bit with the 4 1/2 type thing which there isn't one, but thought it could have been tightened up just a bit, but overall it was more on the 5 side than the 4}.
'“It’s barely dark. A little early for a nightclub, don’t you think? We’ll be dead before twelve if we start there."' If only they knew..... Fresher's week at a university somewhere in England starts off with drunken antics and ends with a fight for life, as a bunch of students discover that the zombie apocalypse has come to their campus. Typical students abound, as does stupidity. I really had fun reading this book, spotting clues to what was really going on, though the end was still a surprise. Madcap, insane, funny, a read you won't regret. I'm not sure whether Necroville needs to be read beforehand, I don't think it's vital.
I have read a great deal of zombie books and this one is my favourite so far. I enjoyed the book before this "the dead woods" though I couldn't imagine myself in that one and it was short. I really loved this book. it's something I have often thought about. I like to think I have a plan for the apocalypse but I would probably be like these people running scared. it was very realistic. the people were relatable and the way they change is very realistic. there was a nice twist at the end so hopefully there is a sequel. I stayed up all night reading now I need to sleep and hopefully not have zombie dreams.
I really could not finish this book. About a quarter of the way through it's pretty much two-dimensional college kid stereotypes making weird decisions and really bad jokes about drinking, with zombies thrown in.
I think the story's supposed to take place in England, but it's hard to tell. The only reliably "English" character is the guy who's supposed to be rich and snobby, which says a lot. I really couldn't suspend my disbelief because any and all plausibility is sacrificed for tired memes about how college students don't care about anything but alcohol.
I was expecting Animal House meets Shaun of the Dead, but what I got was a hot mess.
What an epic book! The concept of having to get the right level of drunk to survive a zombie apocalypse intrigued me and the storyline more than satisfied. Expecting the typical zombie thriller ending, it's left me needing to read more. It was full of action, humour, and guesomness. It's written with a precision that provoked laughter alongside gut-wrenching emotions as the group try to survive. I was completely immersed. If you like comedy and zombies, you will devour this book. If you don't, you'll love it anyway.
This book turned out much better than I expected. I adore zombie stories.... anytime and anywhere I can take a minute, or hour,or two. Daniel's zombies are just a bit scarier than most for they can do a bit more than your run of the mill undead folks. I am excited to read more from this writer. His imagination makes for some, hopefully, even more expectations for a tense night of weird dreams.
I don't normally read zombie books, but I was intrigued, and not disappointed. The characters were excellent, likable, with wonderful quirks, as they all battle for survival on the college campus. Although a complete novel, there was room left for a sequel, so I eagerly await the next installment. Five stars is not something I give easily, but this one ticked all my boxes.
Awesome book! Absolutely loved it! Keeps you wanting more!Read this one on a fluke, glad i did ! Some times that's a good thing. Now i want to read the rest ! Lol
Awesome book! Absolutely loved it ! Keeps you wanting more ! Read this one on a fluke, glad I did ! Sometimes that's a good thing ! Going to read more in this series! Hope you enjoy it too!!!
loved this book charecters were funny but believable and i think this is the way some people would react if this happened a little bit different to your usual grab a shotgun shoot anything that moves and reminded me a little of shaun of the dead i would highly recomend this book
When I started reading I knew what to expect by the authors summary. Only one part got me thinking, uh ok (rowboat) lol? But the rest had me hooked so I had to get the prequel!
I love zombie fiction of all types, even those written with tongue firmly in cheek like this one. There are some stereotypical characters (the humourless feminist, for example), but for the most part it's a fun read. The ending definitely makes me want to check out the prequel.
This started out okay but quickly careened right off a damn cliff. I kept trying to persevere because everyone kept saying how hilarious it is but I just didn’t find any humor in it and conceded around 120 pages in.
A very fun and funny story. The later half got a little dry but overall a compelling story. A bit of the British lingo through me off it didn’t distract from the enjoyment. Will definitely look more into the series.
Last Crawl is a zombie apocalypse centered around a small group of survivors. And it is jam-packed with dangerous situations and battles. There’s also a bit of humor which I throughly enjoyed. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Other than a few editing issues, this is really a pretty good book. Characters transition from obnoxious to endearing, and the dialog is, at times, really funny.
Really enjoyed it, not the typical mindless zombie book. Can't wait to read the rest. Would recommend it to anyone looking for something just a little different.
I enjoy a good zombie story. This one is a bit different with some weird characters. I finished it, so it wasn't awful. If you like the genre and want a change of pace, give it a shot.
The zombie apocalypse strikes on the first night of Fresher’s Week at a brand new and rather well equipped British university campus in the sticks. The characters are all stereotypes, but anyone who’s been to uni in the UK will know someone who matches each one, if not all of them. This is a fun read, mainly a funny spoof, but also a good, gory zombie novel. The notion that being blind drunk could be a shield against zombie detection is a good premise, but it’s actually under used as the guys don’t seem that drunk with all the action. Good stuff nevertheless.
