This is not your typical shifter story. See, the Alley Cats are bad. They do bad things..live bad lives. They’re cursed…literally. They can’t call to their animal. Their animals are gone...locked away. They must change their ways in order to shift again. They MUST. BE. BETTER. Some don’t want to. They want to continue on the way things are. Others want the change. Welcome the change. They need to love to heal.

Ratchet finds a dirty, hurt girl in the shed. Something whispers to him...protect, heal.. MINE. Marlee, captive for 10 years by a powerful man is broken. She needs love...to heal. What she finds is Ratchet. They mend each other in different ways but in the end they heal. But what if the only way to heal is to let go and say goodbye?

These two broke my heart. Both have lost so many things over the years including themselves. This story was about finding that missing piece and healing what was broken.
“In those moments, he felt more whole than he had in all his years. More satisfaction than any night with a warm willing body. More good than bad. More human than animal. And it had nothing to do with his dual nature. It was his heart, changing. And it was because of her.”~Ratchet

“There was hope. Maybe it was silly, but with every reminder of their physical connection, […] and his cruel ways faded to the background. And in his place, was the reality that she could make something beautiful of her stolen life. Starting now. All she had to do was try. Fight back against the ones who wanted to hurt her. Cling to the ones who didn’t. And face her fears like Ratchet showed her.”~Marlee

Ratchet was so gentle with Marlee. He helped to ease her fears and protect her. He took care of her as a mate should.
“Such a little thing maybe, using food to make her happy for a small piece of time, but it felt massive inside, where he was so broken.”~Ratchet

“No scowl,” she murmured, eyes still twinkling. “No snarl.” He shook his head, soaking in every bit of her expression. He wanted this marked in his mind forever, the way she looked right now. “No fear,” he whispered, tracing her smile with the tip of his finger. “No sadness.”

Marlee has lost so much. But she was strong. She never gave in. She kept fighting until her warrior found her. The one who would protect her but also set her free.
“He was exactly the kind of brutal she needed. A warrior. Who would stand and fight for her, be her shield, be her conqueror. Because she'd been in the fiercest battle for most of her life, and she'd been standing alone. But no more.”~Marlee

“He could do the noble damn thing. He could do it even though it hurt like hell. And nothing felt righter than doing the noble damn thing for her. The lion could protect the lamb.”~Ratchet

It was a sweet journey to see these two heal and find what they needed most.
“He’d been missing a piece of himself for so long. But the beast didn’t make him whole. Marlee had.”~Ratchet

“You’re my safe place. My protector. My warrior.”~Marlee

I loved the idea of the big bad Alley Cats, and was totally Jonesing for this read. What a fab idea to have a series of baddies that turn themselves around and become the good guys ...... however I would have preferred to be shown their story, not told about them. What they did, how bad they were, how cruel, etc. but was never shown so I struggled to believe they were that bad.

There wasn't much action, which you kinda expect in a shifter romance, and what little there was mostly happened off page or wasn't built on.

I also don't feel as if I got to know much about the characters, there was definitely a lack of detail there. I get Marlee was held in a bad place but would have liked to read about it myself rather than being told .... dare I say even in flashback?!?

This is a special series.

I didn't believe Jameson could outdo All Is Bright. I was sorely mistaken. This was better. This was a start of a wonderfully special series. I have read many of Jameson's other works, but they do not compare to this. At all.

This book is about redemption, pain, loss, healing, trusting, and love. This book is about everything. I'm just going to repeat myself again... Jameson did something magical here. The H is perfect. The heroine is endearing. The plot is perfect, and Jameson set up the rest of the series nicely.

"Was this how it always started? The mating. Was this how his former brothers, Gash and Malcom, found their way? A feeling in your gut that both hurt and calmed in a single breath. One look at the right female and your entire world view changed, morphing into something that no longer revolved around you. It made her the sun and you the goddamn universe orbiting her. Was this... was she... the one who was supposed to burn away his past?" SWOON.

Heart of Gold tells the story of Ratchet, a werecat who has lost his ability to shift, and Marlee, a human who was held captive by a powerful crime lord for ten years.

I'll admit, I'm getting more than a little tired of seeing romance authors give their heroines a history of assault rather than, y'know, a developed personality. BUT Marlee was handled with a lot of complexity and skill. What I found most compelling was the fact that the author chose to focus on the importance of consent and Marlee's feelings of empowerment.

The Alley Cats are, overall, weird characters to root for in a romance novel. Ratchet in particular is a bit complicated because once he meets Marlee, he's a great hero--kind, compassionate, and selfless. Yet the glimpses we get of his mother made me feel incredibly sorry for her, another woman in his life who is just as trapped as Marlee was, yet Ratchet has never felt compelled to do much about it. I think I could live with this if he spoke to his mother about it at all, but he stays pretty focused on Marlee and only briefly considers the similarities between Marlee's situation and his mother's.

What a great start

I'm in love with this book! Its such an amazing start to a new series. We've been waiting for the ally cats to turn into decent shifters forever!!
Ratchet is hard, broken and angry. But what I love the most about him is he never denies his feelings for Marlee and he never was anything bout beautiful and soft and perfect for her. Marlee is broken and abused but never hardened and she held no denial either.
This world the P. Jameson has given us is one of my favorite to lose myself in. She has created a place where love is possible despite your past actions. Everyone fights for the right reasons here. And people are truly beautiful.
When we read the Ouachita book that started the Sorcera curse, I'm sure we all thought "well they get what they deserve now they'll crawl off into the forest to die".. But this is where P. Jameson does what other authors don't, she takes those characters we hate and makes us love them. She makes them love themselves enough to truly love another person and she makes us understand where they went wrong .
So this tale turns into something more than just a simple no brainier shifter romance and into a truly deep and heart wrenching tale .
It becomes a story of redemption and love. Of loss and life.. And it teaches us that no one is too far gone to be saved.
Thank you P Jameson for giving us such a beautiful world.

I could not continue. The writing did not flow. It needs more than an editor. I found myself skimming. The premise was good, but poor execution.

My opinion. You may love it.

***SPOILERS***

2.5 STARS

This one was just okay for me.
It was short.
It was sweet.
But there was virtually no plot.

I’m always down for a shifter book especially with the whole “mate” concept and that’s exactly what Heart of Gold was. It wasn’t the best I’ve read but it also wasn’t the worst.

With these kind of shifter books the author has to be careful that the instant connection/bond doesn’t feel too much like insta love or it gets kinda cheesy. With Heart of Gold it’s kinda straddling the line but I still liked that part of the story... the romance.

The plot was short and wasn’t very exciting (mainly because nothing happens); it was rather slow and kinda non existent to be honest...

The hero finds the heroine in a shed on the clans property. He takes her to his room before his clan “brothers” discover her (because apparently they’d hurt her). They spend the entire book in his room or on the roof together. At the end he sends her away to “save” her from the clan but it backfires and they catch her leaving. He breaks the curse by turning into his lion to protect her. Clan backs off. They end up back in his room an hour later having sex and promising forever to each other.

Boom.
It’s over.
That’s the entire boring plot.

The only thing that saves the story is the romance, (which thank god because it’s literally the entire plot.)It was sweet and I really loved the hero Ratchet.

Will I read more from this series when they are released? Meh, I doubt it. Maybe if I’m ever in the mood for a light quick read but I prefer my shifter romances with more substance. I like a plot to go along with the romance. Or at least something exciting with twists or turns. Sadly I don’t think I’m going to get that from this series.

Ratchet wasn't a good "person" as he was cursed BUT his actions that lead to the curse were never detailed so we didn't see the "bad" side of him. We only saw the changing, becoming a better man, side which I was extremely grateful for. Plus, he stated that he couldn't remember when he had last been with a woman OR even turned on by a woman sooo...I consider this safe.
Marlee was a survivor. I liked that she didn't let her past stop her and trusted, somewhat easily, in Ratchet.

Their story quickly and alluded to storylines for the other guys. I'll be continuing the series and probably reading the books about the curse that got the Ally Cats to the situation they're in. I wanted an epilogue to show Ratchet and Marlee in the future but as this is a series and they are pivotal characters I'll be seeing their story arc continue.

Overall...its a win :-)

Great story, H's pack has been cursed as they were not good men. The punishment is losing their animals, and now live a life of degradation. The h escapes from an evil man, H finds her and suddenly his beast speaks to him. Tells him that she's his mate, he needs to be gentle with her. He put her needs above his own and this is what saves him. It's a romantic, sweet story in a dark setting where everyone is in captivity.

Fated Determination

This is a wonderful start to this new fire cat series.

Ratchet is in an even darker place now in his life . He and his brothers were all shape shifters where cats until some witches sorcerers condemn them with a curse . By silencing the parts of their animal, they were not whole anymore and could not shift. They were called the Alley cats before the curse . They essentially took care of all the bad stuff and reported to the Lord of Memphis . Until that fatal night that would change everything they were cursed . Now Ratchet has found a woman hiding in their shed . As soon as he sees your face he realizes she is his mate. How can that be possible when his animal is basically nonexistent ? He finds out her story and he is violently angered for what she has gone through. He is hiding her from everyone in order to keep her safe.

Marlee Benson has been a starved captive for 10 years. She was payment for her father's gambling debts. She has made her move to finally escape. She hides, but is found out by a very intense man. This man gives without taking. This is a new concept for her.

This is a fascinating book. I look forward to Monster's story as well as the rest of the Alley cats

Great book

A heart-wrenching story from beginning to end. Even brought tears to my eyes toward the end.
Marlee is someone who was a kidnap victim for ten years. Where she was drugged, starved and charged for every little thing. When she finally escapes she is found by Rachet. She was sleeping in the Alley Cat's shed.
Rachet races her up to his room so that his clan leader Felix doesn't see her and hurt her worse than she already appears. He asks his mom to help him help her.
The Alley Cat's were cursed by a coven if witches because they were getting ready to harm innocents. They were raised to be cruel but now because of the curse they no longer had the shifter animal, they were basically human. The curse was that they would be healed if they had a change of heart.
Marlee was Rachet's chance at change. His animal was starting to reappear because of her but it wasn't the original animal he had. Would a direct appear like a previous clan mate? Rachet didn't know but he would do anything to keep her safe.
Lots of adventure going on with the clan and other possible mates. There is also the kidnapper to deal with.
I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Adult Feline Shifter Paranormal

I enjoyed this book. It revolves around a gang of feline shifters who have lost their abilities to shift. I thought that I had previously read the Author's other series (Ouachita shifters). When I read this book, I was irritated with the lack of background and World Building. When I checked my library, I discovered that I had only read the Prequel and first book of that other series. Because I need to go back to that other series, I will not deduct stars in my rating for lack of World Building, since it may well be that the other series will resolve this issue.

I liked this book, and read it straight through. The ending was good, as the main characters are firm in their romance. The next book will be about another Shifter in the group finding his mate. I enjoy books in a series that have resolution for the MCs in each book without drawing things out with cliffhangers.

I will come back to this series after I read the Ouachita series. 3-1/2 Stars for me. Nothing exceptional, but if you like Feline Shifter romances, you may enjoy it. Strong language and sexual scenes.

A little bit of a “show don’t tell” issue with the MMC’s so-called hardness, but I’m guessing there was more backstory in other books that would make more sense of what kind of person the MMC was before? The book is labeled as #1 in a series but then there’s a bunch of in-universe prequel recs in the back of the book, so yeah.

Other than that, I thought the characters were sweet and the FMC’s story poignant. The dirty talk was quite good, avoiding tired clichés, and felt true to character. (Every time an MMC asks an FMC to “beg for it” I fall asleep, LOL.) The entire book pretty much takes place in one room, and the story isn’t about defeating the big villain (yet) and doesn’t end with a bloody confrontation. It’s a satisfying twist and plays on the reader’s expectations when the MMC

I loved this book! I've read all of Jameson's shifter series, and this is the first book in her new firecats series. I have to save, it really blew me away. I've had a preset negative mindset against the Alley Cats because of previous run-ins and mentions of them in other books. However, you can't help but root for Thomas "Ratchet" from the very beginning. He's knows at first glance when he finds Marlee huddled and hidden in the shed that he must save and protect her. Ratchet understand that she is his to love and protect above everyone, even himself. Marlee had been broken ands abused for the past 10 years, yet somehow she knows that Ratchet will never hurt her. She can heal and be safe. They face great emotional changes and danger within the Alley Cat clan, yet you know Ratchet would die, before he let his brothers or even Felix, his sick and broken leader, harm his lamb. This is such an awesome, affirming story of unconditional love, life, second chances, and rebirth. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Oh My! This was a surprise! I did not expect to love this as much as I do!

This is not your typical shifter romance! In fact, it's so far from a typical shifter romance the actual shifting only happens in the end of the book LOL
I loved the Hero, I loved the heroine, I loved the other Alley Cats...Great character development of not just the MCs, but also the secondary characters - hell, even their so called "horrible leader" who I thought was for sure going to be a major villain had character development!

Alas you can't have it all...For an epilogue HEA junkie like me, the ending left a LOT to be desired. Seeing as this is a series, and the major conflict affects all of the Alley Cats and their women, there isn't a definite ending in this book - because it automatically leads to Book 2's story. Still, I gave it 5 stars because I am LOVING that little sneak peak of Book 2!

Definitely a series I will be following

A shifter romance, out of the box - I mean, magic and not cooking cutter - it has its own unique style!

A shifter romance is really seems routine this one just blew the box side open! The Alley Cats were destructive & mean shifters and Witches put a curse on them to help contain them from harming others. Right not seen that in shifter romance stories. Now that just the beginning how can you make some in a cruel environmental turn good? How does someone escape being imprisoned in another evil man's basement. The two people Ratchet and Marissa who holds a picture of others that need rescuing. The journey is shocking, stressful and tear you up. This hard man turn soft and safe...transformation is amazing. Blazing Hot Story

This is more than good verse evil it's about light taking over the dark and forgiveness. This is different kind of love story. We all have things in our past that dictate our future, but some move pass it while other let it defeat them. We have two people who need to find the light that was taken from them, one who never gave into the darkenes, but feared it and the other who let the dark have him. Once he found true love he found light and forgiveness not from others but from himself. He had to forgive himself and scarfice what was important to him to have the love he needed to find that part of him lost to the dark. If you like Malcom's story OMG this series is going to give you life. I can't wait for book 2 this summer.

I prefer to see the action not hear about it

The whole book was all about "I'm bad, we're bad, we hurt people etc etc" but there was never any action to prove that. Just the Hero's thoughts and words. So he didn't come across as tough and bad @ss as the author obviously intended. The tough, dirty talk wasn't executed well either. It was inconsistent and fake.

This book had so much potential but sadly it was a bit tame for a shifter plot. If you like sweet with a hint of alpha then this is for you.
I liked the heroine. She was vulnerable but desperate to work at her fears and was understanding with the hero. There was no angst or OT miscommunication.

I did like the story line but just wish there was more.

Simply....OH. MY. HOLY. CANNOLI. This book was amazing. I could not put this book down. It takes a lot for me to give five stars and I wish I could give this book five stars ten plus times. It will make you cry, it will make you whimper, it will make you laugh. You will fall in love with these characters, completely and utterly-without a doubt just as I did. The writing is impeccable and as a fellow writer, all I can say is AMAZING JOB, author. You did so good and I hope you are proud of yourself because you deserve to be proud of yourself. Great book. I will most definitely be following this author’s other works along with eagerly awaiting the next book in this series! Must read! xoxox -Hannah D.

Heart of Gold – P. Jameson – Thomas has an advantage over the other child soldiers turned cursed shifters in his pack: his mom stuck around. Now he needs her help to save the only person that might be able to save him. Marlee has been a prisoner of a crime lord since her 18th birthday, but her escape lands her in the middle of a shifter pack that work for her captor. Thomas can hear his inner lion for the first time since he was cursed, and it’s his only hope to restore Marlee and save his own broken heart. She escaped with a picture of her fellow captives, and his pack mates recognize the girls in the photo as their only hopes. They are about to wage a war on the Devil of Memphis! Happy Reading!

Great job!

To start reading this you need to read the Ouachita series. The Alley Cats are evil cat shifters that were cursed because of their violent way and for attacking the Ouachita shifters. However there is a way to break the curse. They have to have a change of heart. This is the beginning of a new series. Rachet (Thomas) finds a girl. He realizes she needs help and something starts as he hides her from his clan. She has been abducted for 10 years starving, drugged and abused. He feels he has to help her.

This is a great story to start the series! Can't wait for the next book!!

So great an absolute must read!!!!!!!!

This book was so amazing so much heart and tenderness it was engrossing. I cried too many times to count. I love the entire story of how someone with so much hardness and hate could become so tender and loving. A story that will give you hope that life even in the worst conditions has a shining light of hope. When things are as bad as bad could ever get, you come across goodness and peace. I will never ever forget this story of a battered and betrayed woman and her healing journey with a broken cat who finds love and his firecat. AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm kind of irritated with hero and the other Alley Cats. The only reason why they want to help rescue the captured women is because of the bond and because they want their animals back. They either abused women or watched women get abused and did nothing about it. The only reason they want to change is for selfish reasons. The hero's mom was horrible. She wanted to give an innocent girl back to a man who she knew was going to kill her. If Heroine would not have been pregnant, then the mother would have sacrificed her. Why do they let Felix live? I feel he is not redeemable. I will try the next book in the series but my hopes are low that I will finish

Redemption!

There is something so satisfying about a redemption story. Both of our main characters needed saving and hell if they didn't get stronger for each other. The firecats aren't just normal shifters. These are not normal shifter romances. These are gritty and emotional stories of being metaphorically buried alive and climbing out of the dirt with your bare hands. God I can't wait for the next one, because aside to a good redemption story, I really like seeing a true bad guy go down.

Full of the feels!!!

This book is the beginning of a series I can't wait to devour. It is emotionally packing, dark, with so much light sprinkled on top, you can't help but love it. Kinda like your favorite cream filled donut...just the donut and it's good, but with the cream??? Excellent.

In this book, the characters are so life like, it's almost like PJ has become them to write there stories. She focuses on the good in even the smallest things, like no one I have ever read before, even in the most horrifying situations. Love, love, LOVE this book❤

Hearts: Ratchet and Marlee

Such a heartfelt and wonderful story. The Alley Cats are broken, lost, and dejected. Marlee is on the run from being held captive for the last decade. When Thomas "Ratchet" finds Marlee she is broken and down on her luck. Ratchet and Marlee save each other but there is still work to be done. The plot is very well written, the characters are well developed with a setting in Memphis, TN, USA. This book is a standalone novel but does continue the Alley Cats/Firecats series. A great edition to the series.
