Myrtle has decided that she’s actually a very good cook. In fact, she feels she’s such a good cook that she elects to hone her skills at a cooking school. She persuades her reluctant friend Miles to join her, convinced they both could use some inspiration in the kitchen.
This cooking school enrolls one rather loud-mouth student who quickly makes everyone fed-up. This unfortunate student, fond of telling tales out of school, learns that one man’s meat is another man’s poison. Myrtle and Miles must use class act detecting skills to learn who’s been schooled in murder before someone else’s goose gets cooked.

One of the things I like about the Myrtle Clover books is that you can read each as a stand-alone book. But it's nice to read them one right after another as you get to know certain things about Myrtle. We learned in the previous books that Myrtle can't cook but thinks she can so we know going in that Myrtle going to cooking class is going to provide some good laughs. And the usuals are back ... Red, Myrtle's police chief son who hates her getting into his investigations; Miles a neighbor who reluctantly goes along with Myrtle and becomes her sleuthing side-kick; Puddin the house cleaner who never wants to work; Puddin's husband Dusty, who supposedly takes care of Myrtle's yard; Wanda the psychic; Erma, the gossipy next door neighbor who talks too much and annoys Myrtle, and Pasha the feral cat Myrtle has sort of adopted. One of Myrtle's classmates in cooking class is murdered and Myrtle is planning a dinner party based on the class which is bound to be a disaster. But Myrtle is clever and as one character says "Is like a dog with a bone" when she is determined to find out what is going on.
I love this series! I wait with anticipation for the next one to come out. I feel like the usual cast of characters are old friends. This was especially humorous as everyone knows how lacking Myrtle is in the cooking department.
Just not enjoying this. Expected a cooking class to be a great platform for all sorts of shenanigans, but we get ... nothing. Big disappointment.
The gnome art and alt funeral were fun. But the cooking gags fell flat. A town that small, everyone would know who's a good cook and who's a failure, and people eat before the event for the bad cooks. Not to mention, the students in the class would well know if someone was a disaster in the kitchen, and the teacher SHOULD be helping if that's the case. So it really didn't fly - again, what should have been a rich source of fun came off as if the writer knew nothing about the topic.
Myrtle, her sidekick Miles and the gnomes are back and just as funny as ever. I love this series and the author has made it very near to the top of my must read as soon as they come out list. That is because I know I will soon be chuckling along with the characters as they find themselves in all sorts of trouble and the idea of Myrtle Clover in a cooking class is just hilarious. This is book 11 in the series and if like me you have enjoyed the series then you know that Myrtle can not cook to save her life. It didn't disappoint (and I don't think it is giving away any plot spoilers to say that she still can't). The mystery was good and with plenty of suspects the octogenarian sure has her work cut out for her (and me). There is so much about this book that I really enjoyed from the gnome display in the garden to the cat Pasha attacking everyone that it might be easier just to say get the book sit back and prepare to laugh. Myrtle has signed her and Miles up for cooking lessons at the local collage. Where they find more than they were bargaining for. Wanda the pyschic meets them outside to pass on her usually dire prediction of danger but this time it is for Miles. They make it through the cooking lesson without incident but one of there class mates is so lucky. The loud ex pupil of Myrtle's told her that everybody in the class hated him and it turns out he was right. Myrtle wants to host a dinner party and put into practice everything she's learnt in class it's not her fault that all the suspects will be there. Can she cook up a storm and find the killer before Wanda's prediction about Miles comes true? I like the narrator and I am glad that the author has decided that she is the best narrator to bring Myrtle and her friends to life.
I was going on a train journey and picked up this book intrigued by the title. I don't know about you but reading a worthy tomb just doesn't work on trains. I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I loved Myrtle feisty , alert and Miles who's happy, well maybe, that Myrtle only wants him as a friend and is not pursuing him as potential husband material but he's reluctant to get drawn into her investigations. The train journey flew by and the book was finished. I'll look out for more in this series.
The latest installment of my favourite cozy mystery series turned out to be one of my favorites. Myrtle Clover, notoriously bad cook, takes a cooking class with her best friend Miles. One of their fellow students is murdered, and their classmates are the suspects. Well plotted, appearance of many favorite minor characters, a gnomish yard art exhibit, and a terrible dinner party make this a laugh a minute as well as a good mystery. Looking forward to next installment.
Read on my Kindle Fire, first read of the new year!
3.5 stars Another installment with my favorite sleuthing pair, Myrtle and Miles. This would absolutely be a four-star review if it weren’t for the errors (both typographical and grammatical) that popped up from time to time. It seemed like the editing just didn’t get finished. Aside from that, the mystery was good - lots of red herrings and a good pace. There were also some lol moments as we’ve come to expect in this series. On to the next one!
Funny, lighthearted but you never know who the bad guy is until the end. Myrtle definitely grows on you! At the beginning of the series, I thought she was just a cantankerous old woman, but now she feels like a friend. Love this series - Off to buy the next one!
I chose this rating because it was appropriate for this Myrtle Clover series. The normal characters are in place plus some additional ones. The plot was challenging with a surprise ending. It is a book that any age or gender would enjoy.
There is mention in this book of a pimiento cheese chili dog which is lingering in my brain. I may have to make one of those sometime because I love all the ingredients but wouldn't have put them together.
If there’s one thing Myrtle Clover will never accept, its that she cannot cook. But they doesn’t stop her from taking an advanced cooking class at the community college. After wheedling her best friend Miles into taking the class with her, they head for their first lesson. It turns out that Myrtle taught several of the class members, and her memories are not all find ones.
But when one of her classmates, and former students ends up murdered, she has a new case to work on. But not everybody is as they seem. Myrtle must untangle a web of secrets and lies to find the murderer. And when another body turns up, Miles and Myrtle have to speed things up before one of them is killed next.
Myrtle’s attempts at a cooking class that is way above her level of skill was one of the funniest parts of this book. The fact that she refuses to see it is almost too much. The new characters in this book were all unique, and the main cast of characters were just as dependable as ever. The twists and turns in this plot make it a great cozy mystery, and I can’t wait to read more about Myrtle.
I would recommend this to those who love the whole series, but I think you could pick this book up without reading the rest of the series. The plot is fascinating, and the mystery is memorable. This is the perfect book to curl up with on a rainy day. Myrtle Clover is one of my favorite amateur sleuths, and Craig keeps delivering great books with no shortage of funny dialogue, great recurring bits, and the best main character I’ve read in a while.
I love Myrtle. Cooking is Murder is no different than the previous Myrtle Clover adventures. Myrtle still can't cook. Puddin still won't clean. Wanda still knows all. Miles is still a reluctant sidekick. And Red is still in trouble leaving Myrtle to bring out the gnome army.
Great read. Always amusing. Can't wait for the next one.
I can never fault these books. These books have become one of my favourite series. I recommend everyone read them. These books never fail in keeping me hooked, & have me laughing at times, get my mind thinking, & I think I’ve become attached to the characters of this little town. These books always have me wanting more!!!
Oh My Gosh!!!! 😊 It was GREAT! 😀 Myrtle and a very reluctant Miles goes to a cooking class at the college and it is a disaster! 😁 The BEST part of the book was the "lawn art" with the gnomes. (I love 💘 gnomes!!!!!) The "scary" part came at the end and it left me kind of shaken. 😮 I would love it if Myrtle was my Grandma.👵
