First Timothy: Becoming a Good Minister of Christ Jesus

Rate this book
How can we become good ministers of Christ Jesus? In 1 Timothy, Paul writes his protégé Timothy, who is overseeing the church in Ephesus, to encourage him to complete the work God called him to (1 Tim 1:18-19). False teachers had infiltrated the congregation, church members were looking down on Timothy because of his youth, and Timothy was frequently sick with stomach ailments. There were many obstacles to discourage and make him want to quit. Throughout the letter, Paul encourages Timothy to be faithful (1 Tim 4:14-16, 6:11-12), instructs him on how the church of the living God should be run (1 Tim 3:15), and on how to be a good minister of Christ Jesus (1 Tim 4:6). Although 1 Timothy is often called a pastoral epistle, it doesn’t just speak to pastors. It speaks to all of us, because we’re all called to ministry. It instructs us on issues like combatting false teaching (Ch. 1), prayer and worship (Ch. 2), church organization (Ch. 3), the minister’s life and doctrine (Ch. 4), the mercy ministry of the church (Ch. 5), and the believer’s relationship with money (Ch. 6), among other things. It also encourages us to complete our God-given tasks, amidst various obstacles (cf. 1 Tim 1:18-19, 4:12). As we read it, we are challenged, like Timothy, to become good ministers of Christ Jesus, at a time when the church desperately needs them. Let’s study it together with The Bible Teacher’s “Expositional, theological, and candidly practical! I highly recommend The Bible Teacher’s Guide for anyone seeking to better understand or teach God’s Word.” —Dr. Young–Gil Kim, Founding President of Handong Global University “Helpful to both the layman and the serious student, The Bible Teacher’s Guide, by Dr. Greg Brown, is outstanding!” —Dr. Neal Weaver, President of Louisiana Baptist University

Another winner in "The Bible Teacher's Guide" collection. This book offers a clear and concise explanation of the differences between Mosaic Law and Christ's Law that is written in a way that all of us non-theologians can understand. The book of 1 Timothy is so full of wisdom on many topics including understanding Christ's Law, not being ashamed of one's youth, how to live and serve in unity within the Body of Christ, and how to encourage brothers and sisters through instruction and understanding. This book covers all of those topics in depth, but also in a practical way that anyone would find relatable. Thanks to author Gregory Brown for another great book.

First Timothy by Gregory Brown
This Bible teachers guide is an excellent resource for Pastors, Teachers, and studs pants of the Bible and shouldn't that include all of us. The Bible encourages us to be in the Word, searching the Scriptures. This was my first exposure to the Bible Teacher guides and it would be an understatement to say I was impressed. This guide was comprehensive and thorough while at the same time down to earth. Too many times commentaries and such are written at a level that the average person is left confused or feeling dumb. That is not the case here. It was like the author and I were having a heart to heart discussion a about the book of First Timothy. Yet that is not to say that it is simplistic; in fact you will be guaranteed to learn quite a bit. You as the reader will walk away with a deeper understanding of this book of the Bible.

Now to speak as a teacher, I'm thinking I need to check into more of the Bible Teacher guides. This book is very well written and has many lesson and sermons already written for us the reader as the author breaks down the book of First Timothy in logical chunks and presents the information in outline form with both discussion points for each bullet as well as discussions questions to get the reader thinking but those questions would be excellent discussion questions for groups.

Just to give you a teaser, the following lesson or sermon topics are detailed out and these are just from the information on chapter one of First Timothy
6 Marks of a Faithful Soldier
Proper and improper uses of the Law
7 Marks of Gods abounding grace in a believers life
6 Ways to fight the spiritual battle well
That's all I'm going to give you, get a copy of this book, you will not regret it

A Timely Word and Study for Today

Pastor Gregory Brown presented me with the opportunity to read his most recent Bible study, the Bible Teacher’s Guide in the book of First Timothy – Becoming a Good Minister of Christ Jesus.

Once again, Pastor Brown has done an excellent and thorough job of expositional teaching of the Bible. Going verse by verse, he helps the reader/student to understand Scripture in context. He uses Scripture to interpret Scripture.

He’s deals straight with the truth and the Bible is the standard by which he measures truth or falsehood and right and wrong. It’s clear he desires that the church be equipped to know and teach God’s Word and live it out in their daily lives. He asks hard questions, challenges Christians to examine themselves and be serious about their faith.

I found the questions throughout the book to be challenging, sobering and very convicting. He doesn’t shy away from dealing with topics that are controversial in today’s culture. He uses Scripture, Old Testament and New Testament, to back up his assertions and interpretations.

First Timothy – Becoming a Good Minister of Christ Jesus by Pastor Gregory Brown is an excellent book and resource for Bible study. It would be a great help to prepare someone who is going to be leading a study, or for group or individual study.

I highly recommend Pastor Gregory Brown’s newest Bible study, First Timothy – Becoming a Good Minister of Christ Jesus.

This book by Gregory Brown is a full course meal. You will find meats, vegetables, salads, and desserts from the Word of God. Brown has carefully prepared these culinary delights from careful research and a prayerful heart. There is much spiritual protein here. This is no snack, but a rich laying out of spiritual food. The outlines alone are worth the price of the book. Illustrations are used effectively. Wise application of Scripture is used throughout the study. You will be amazed at the spiritual riches to be found in this short book of First Timothy.

Gregory Brown gives once more deep insight in a chapter of the bible. His thorough research and cross-references help to see passages in a new light that I've read quite often before. The questions he poses at the end of each chapter are helpful for small group discussions but also for individual readers as they don't stick to theory but concern our personal life of faith.
This book - as the whole series - will hopefully be read by many leaders within the church, but it's not only meant for pastors: we all are leaders in some way .
