To serve and protect...
That's my job.
That's who I am, and what I do.
It's what I've always done.

And when she comes back to town,
She's all I want,
All I need.

But I know better.
I refuse to give into my desire.
I'll never hurt her,
Never leave her.

And my job alone threatens it all,
Threatens everything.
I have to stay away,
Otherwise, I'll break her,
Ruin her,
And destroy us.

This was my first by Zolendz and I went into it excited. Resisting Love is told in alternating first person which I tend to gravitate towards. Liv was a funny heroine. She seemed to have a good attitude even with playing parent to her mom. Growing up with her neighbor and best friend, it's easy to see her fall for the older brother. Dean is your typical book boyfriend who struggles with the repercussions of his job as a police officer. Not wanting to bring anyone into his world causes him to feel so alone and empty. There was a lot of angst for such a quick read and you just want to shake these two and tell them to get over their fears and take the chance. There was buildup at the end of secondary characters which have you hoping to find out more and maybe get some answers for remaining loose ends. There was a lot of potential here but the depth I was expecting was lacking leaving you with a funny, predictable, quick read.

I love this author.

This story is a new series by Christine and obviously I'm going to run the moment it comes out and devour it.

I did just that. It had all the elements to a story I love. My only compliant is it's a fast short read, but who cares when your falling for your next book couple.

Cannot wait for book 2.

good read and a first read of this author.

Note I have put "domestic violence" in tags but this won't come into full disclosure until book 2 is released - we get a hint of this to be developed more in the secondary characters - i.e. Brooke. Who is he???

looking forward to book 2 in this series - out in June.

DISCLAIMER TO MY FELLOW GOODREADER
This review is my personal opinion and may contain: spoilers, quotes, rants and swearing.

25 year old Olivia “Liv” Rhys carved a life for herself in Vermont right out of high school. She went to college, became a teacher and settled in to small town culture. Staying away from the memories back home is all she knows to survive. But after receiving multiple phone calls from her alcoholic mother, she drives back to New York City. She was not anticipating finding her mother half alive and the boy next door to come charging in to play savior.

“I wasn’t crying over her brother no more than the fact that everyone in my life had never thought I was enough to change for, fight for, risk anything for. I wasn’t worth it to anyone.”

30 year old Dean Fury is a Detective in the New York City police department. His profession has caused him to remove any personal relationships outside of his family - blood and force - that could have him failing. Because that is one of his worst fears. Leaving behind a woman and child because of the dangers of his duty. After suffering a great loss, someone from his past comes barreling back into his life. Whether he wants to or not, he starts to rethink is outlook on relationships.

“She had this unselfishness about her and courage that set her apart from any other woman I’d ever met. I knew her strong, brave character from the horror stories Brooke used to tell me when I’d ask after her. Ever since we were in grade school, I had this fiercely protective feeling about her-Brooke also, of course-but with Liv it was somehow different. It was more possessive-apprehensive. The thought of anyone hurting her devastated me.”

This was a super fast read. The timeline covered 3-4 days max. There was a Mad World/Shane Maxton cameo. It made my brain think that this was pre Grace entering into Shane’s world only because of him asking about a gray eyed girl. Anyways, it made me want to pick up that series! Not entirely a good thing when I should be focusing on the current story. I will continue the series because I would like to know some answers to a few open items that were not addressed. I liked the heroine but not the hero as much. But again, it was not super deep content which meant there was not much to relate to.

Cliffhanger - no (book #1 of series)
POV - Olivia & Dean

This is a quick read and a dramatic and angsty ‘childhood crush/best-friend’s-brother’ love story. It’s the first in Christine Zolendz’s Behind Blue Lines series which features characters in the police force, bringing a dramatic edge that works really well with the romance. I enjoyed this one.

Olivia Rhys is a teacher who lives in Vermont, but she is returning home to Queens deal with her alcoholic, hot mess of a mother. She walks into a disaster zone, pretty much right at the same time that her mother’s neighbour and her childhood crush, Dean, literally crashes through the door to save the day.

Dean is the oldest brother of Olivia’s childhood best friend, Brooke, and the man she has had feelings for for as long as she can remember. They grew up next door to each other, but Dean is five years older than her and never showed her any interest. And he doesn’t seem to now – even though from that first glance Olivia’s attraction for him flares back to life.

Dean Fury is a detective. His father was on the force, as is his sister. It’s all he’s ever known and he has dedicated his life to his job. But his single-minded commitment has come at the cost of his personal life, for he knows the cost that is placed on the loved ones of police officers and he refuses to put somebody in that position.

An unexpected tragedy has recently rocked his world, and while he struggles to deal with his grief, anger and bewilderment, Olivia is next door trying to do the same. In the midst of all of that emotion, the two of them are there for each other and the chemistry begins to sizzle.

I want to kiss you. I want to touch you, everywhere. I want to pretend for one moment in my life I lead a normal existence. I could love you without ever breaking your heart. Because I never want you to feel the burden of what I do and the man I am.

But with Olivia only in town for a short while, and with Dean trying to come to terms with his loss and still determined to stop anybody from getting too close to him, these two have a lot of hurdles to overcome before they can get on the same page.

“We’re like broken glass, aren’t we? Both of us tiptoeing around our sharp edges trying not to cut each other.”

I enjoyed this book. The romance is a slow burn with some angst and UST as they torture and torment each other, taking two steps forward and then one step back as they both work through their issues. There are some twists and turns to the story, with smaller plotlines woven throughout bringing some surprises and providing some added depth to the book (and I loved the cameo from Shane Maxton and the boys). But overall, this book felt a bit rushed for me.

As a long-time fan of Christine Zolendz, I was actually surprised. It didn’t have the depth of emotion or intensity that I was expecting, or that wonderful sense of anticipation you have when you get completely immersed in a story. I usually feel that with her books, but it just wasn’t there in this one. I think it’s because it’s such a short read, so much was unexplored about the characters, their pasts and what was happening between them, and that build-up of chemistry didn’t happen. There were a few moments of intensity and romantic zing that I enjoyed, but they are brief and it takes a long time for resolution to come.

The book ends with Olivia and Dean is a good place, but the story is far from over. There are story threads left undone and questions that still need to be answered, and I’d love to see some real closure for them. But with Brooke’s book up next, and some not-so-subtle hints dropped for where her story is going to go, I know they will be a part of whatever is to come and I’m looking forward to reading more.

When your sisters best friend is off limits and five years younger than you, yet you can’t stop thinking about her, yet you push her away because the life of a cop is no good for her. Being copblocked by the slogan, “we are here to protect and serve the public,”.

I have an issue with alcohol. These characters drink way too much wine, beer, and liquor. It gets old when characters use alcohol to bury pain. They partied too much like they were still in college.
I felt the dialogue was juvenile for a twenty-five and thirty year old. I wish the scenes were sexier. I felt like Christine was holding back.
Liv’s character came across as desperate and wanton. She seemed to put her life on hold waiting for everyone else to guide her. She’s a weak character with no backbone. She’s needs to take control of her life and stop letting others control her destiny. I didn’t like her character even though she took responsibility for her mother. Her obligation to her mother rubbed me the wrong way. She made too many excuses for her.

The entire story was built upon this barrier that couldn’t be pushed down. A heavy reinforced wall was standing in the way. That constant push and pull ears away at my sanity. This type of trope is annoying. I don’t like stories where the character pushes someone away because they are too afraid they aren’t good enough.

That letter was a cop out. Friends confide in each other not leave a bullpucky letter leaving explanations that should have been voiced.

Book 1 in the Behind Blue Lines series. This is Olivia and Dean’s story.

Resisting Love is a quick, but angst filled read. Olivia Rhys, a teacher, lives in Vermont, but must go home to Queens to deal with her alcoholic mother, and walks into a war zone. If that's not stressful enough, she comes face to face with her childhood crush, Dean, as he crashes through the door to save the day. He's the oldest brother of her childhood best friend, Brooke, and she's never gotten over her feelings for him. Of course, he being 5 years older, he never showed any interest. Dean Fury is a detective, as law enforcement is a family tradition that he followed, and his whole life is dedicated to it. Both he and Olivia are dealing with emotional baggage, but being in close proximity, the chemistry starts to flare up. Since this is a shorter read, that's all that I'm going to dole out as far as describing, which of course, is no where near good enough to describe this new series. Color me addicted, as Christine Zolendz, with her super talented writing style, has me all kinds of hooked. The push and pull of feelings, and lust, kept my heart racing cover to cover, with a hot flash or two thrown in for good measure. A few twists had me dropping loud f-bombs, and some colorful secondaries had me laughing hard. I just wish it was longer, as I could have read about these two all day long! CANNOT WAIT for more! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I'm very conflicted with this it was a good story line but I really couldn't connect with the characters , very drama and back and forth a lot of things unsaid and questions not answered it ends in a kinda cliffhanger that the next story is going to be about Brooke and Ryan . I enjoyed little things a good start in a series just had bits that frustrated me .

Love this new series by Christine Zolendz! He's a cop who just lost his partner and friend. She's a teacher that has to come home to clean up her mom's mess. As Liv is cleaning up her mess of a mom, alarms go off, Dean busts in to save the day, and BAM! She's back drooling after her childhood crush. As she's reconnecting with her BFF Brooke (Dean's sister) she's also trying to figure out how to deal with her feelings for him. Dean is trying to cope with his own issues, and while he clearly has the hots for her, he won't let himself get close. There's a lot in this short book, and it's a slow burn! The ending, while not a total cliffy, does set up the storyline for book 2 in this series.

This was a super quick read that I picked up because I love Zolendz's writing and I needed a destresser before my maths prelim tomorrow.
The characters weren't that in depth and the story wasnt incredibly interesting or gripping like her Mad World series that will forever be one of my faves but for a quick romance pick me up book with funny lines in it it did it's job of cheering me up and was a great procrastinatory distraction from my studies.

Overall 3 out of 5 because of the lack of plot and lack of character development, her writing and the cute romance saved it for me... Just and no more though.

Um....OK? There is build up, lots of angst, finally some steam and then BAM! The story of Dean and Liv wraps up in a quick and tidy bow. So....what happened with the cadets? How did Thomas's wife take the news when she got her late husband's post mortem letter? Who is the mystery cop that Brooke
is involved with? Hello? I would have liked those answers. Overall I just didn't enjoy this book. 2*pretty weak* stars

I really liked this one but I thought it ended sudden. I wanted to see Dean talk to thomas's exwife; More of the new relationship; how she was going to move there. Im hoping since the second book is about brooke we will find out more info. Other then that I was surprised how much I liked it and how fast I read it.

This was a good start for the series that I really enjoyed, it was just missing something in the story to make it complete. The characters were great and I could feel there emotions just coming off the pages but I felt the story was rushed and just ended without much warning. I hope the second book will answer some of my questions and make it conclude properly.

I really don't know what to think of this book. It was a bit different from her CZ other reads, so jury is still out. And since Brooke's brother, Dean, is a cop, shouldn't he be suspicious about what's going on with his sister...

This was a hot mess. It was all over the place and felt almost frantic. Tons and tons of typos, wrong names, punctuation missing. And the couple don't even get together till almost 90%. Not good.

4.5 Stars!!!

I'm going to keep my review short & simple! Loved this story!

I was so excited when I heard that Christine Zolendz had written a new series!!
I dove into Resisting Love without even reading the blurb knowing that it would be amazing, Christine's books always are. I absolutely loved this story. I found myself sitting down to read and not wanting to get back up until it was over. I couldn't get enough of Liv and Dean's story, the chemistry that they shared was undeniable and so strong.
I have to admit that I was sad when they book did come to an end, that the second book wasn't going to be these two characters that I had grown to like so much. I just hadn't read enough about them to move onto new characters but loved every second that I did experience.
