Excellent book for learners at my level.

Over the past eleven months I have worked my way through the first and second of the five rounds of the Duolingo Italian course; I do some work each day and start the third round tomorrow. I read this book without much difficulty (one chapter at a time) and think I picked up a fair amount of new appreciation for a number of idioms. I had seen most of the words in the book in one place or another, but reading them in context really helped me with some that I couldn’t quite place at first sight. Very helpful book and a pretty fun (albeit short) ghost story; I just bought the second of the author’s series of books and will start it tomorrow. For me, reading the book via Kindle was imperative; I needed easy access to the link to an Italian dictionary when I didn’t know particular words.

Studio Italiano da due anni. Questo e il primo libro che ho letto in Italiano. Sonia ha scritto una storia ingrigante che e sia racconto misterioso che soprannaturale. C'e una svolta soddisafacente nel racconto. Sono stato in grado di capire la maggior parte della lingua, ma ho anche una lungha lista di nuove parole. Cerchero altri libri di Sonia. Grazie molto.

A useful book for learners of Italian. The story is straightforward and engaging. The language is, for the most part, simple enough to allow a reader to follow the story without needing to stop and look up words.

Questa collezione, scritta da Sonia Ognibene, mi attirava perché usa un registro informale e molte espressioni idiomatiche.
(Sono stata cresciuta con l’italiano mentre abitavo in Regno Unito quindi la mia conoscenza delle espressioni idiomatiche è abbastanza male!)
Sebbene che il livello CEFR sia basso, questo romanzo è molto coinvolgente e perfetto per una lettura rapida e facile!

This collection by Sonia Ognibene caught my interest because she uses an informal register and many idiomatic expressions. (I was raised speaking Italian whilst living in the UK and so my knowledge of idiomatic expressions etc is not very good!)
Although the CEFR level is low, this story is very compelling and is perfect for a quick and easy read!

Good for A2/B1 level

Good interesting story that challenges you and introduces you to many turns of phrase that are common but don’t directly translate. An interesting story that had me happy to keep reading and not put it down. I felt quite accomplished when I’d finished. My first Italian book without English translation! A good resource I’ll read again.

Il passato tormenta Federica, qualcosa che appartiene a un dolore mai superato tornerà a occupare i suoi pensieri e il suo cuore. In una foto postata dal cugino su facebook appare il viso di Marcella, la migliore amica della protagonista, morta per cause misteriose l’anno prima. L’enigma di una tragedia irrisolta costringe il lettore a restare incollato alla storia fino all’ultima pagina. Un racconto bello, curato, intrigante e coinvolgente che si legge facilmente proprio per la caratteristica singolare di questo piccolo romanzo: la finalità dell’autrice, insegnante privata di italiano per stranieri, è stata quella di scrivere una storia per alunni di italiano di livello A2-B1, con lo scopo di insegnare (e spiegare) tutti quei modi di dire tipici della nostra lingua (corredati di relativo significato) che normalmente non si imparano studiando ma si apprendono attraverso il parlato di tutti i giorni. Gli idiomi, i modi di dire di cui Sonia Ognibene ha fatto largo uso, sono evidenziati in corsivo con tanto di spiegazione fra parentesi. Ogni capitolo è supportato anche da un riassunto per consentire ai lettori stranieri di focalizzare e comprendere meglio la storia.
Un’idea geniale supportata da una bella storia, una narrazione fluida e un enigma che stuzzicherà la vostra voglia di scoprire cosa c’è dietro il mistero che tormenta Federica.
Farete un viaggio in un luogo che probabilmente non conoscerete, seguirete i passi della nostra protagonista e scoprirete posti nuovi e interessanti che esistono davvero e potreste avere voglia di visitare.
Insomma, un libro adatto a tutti: a chi ama leggere, a chi ha voglia di staccare la mente dalla realtà e a tutti coloro che stanno studiando la nostra lingua e voglio approfondire il nostro parlato quotidiano e tutte quelle frasi che, per abitudine, ogni giorno pronunciamo senza chiederci mai cosa vogliano dire.

A great book for Italian students

I very much enjoyed this book as a student of Italian. The story was interesting and suspenseful, and the vocabulary challenging enough to be interesting but not so much to be frustrating. The chapter summaries are a terrific idea and help reinforce what the reader has learned in the chapter.

I liked the story and the author's note at the end. We read it in an Italian class and when we had a leader who was a teacher, were able to go through the chapter and determine what the author was trying to teach us (passato prossimo, aggetivi, diretto/indiretto oggeti, etc). It might have been helpful to include discussion questions for each chapter to stimulate conversation.
The author also included many idiomatic phrases in both the long form and conversational form. I thought that this was interesting and we tried to discern how they came about.

Mi e' piacuto questo libro. La mia madre lingua e' l'inglese, l'ho letto per imparare di piu' la lingua italiana. l'autore ha scritto tutta la storia in forma presente. Ovviamente cio' libro e' solo per stranieri che non sono fluenti in italiano. Forse, e' un po' noioso per chi sia fluente in italiano. Un consiglio, questa storia e' proprio paurosa! Non riesco a dormire la notte dopo che l'ho finito! :D

As a student of the Italian language, I enjoyed this short book very much. The grammar and vocabulary were at the right level for me (intermediate) and the story was enjoyable. The author included several everyday Italian phrases that will be useful in conversation.

Grande storia!

Un altro grande racconto breve che delicatamente introdotto nuovi vocaboli e idiomi. Ho evidenziato tutti gli idiomi in entrambi i libri finora per tornare indietro e studiare quando ho finito il terzo.

great book for intermediate level student

I enjoyed reading this book and learned lots of new vocabulary without feeling overwhelmed. I strongly recommend buying in a ebook format to make translation easier. I look forward to reading the next volume.
