Honor, survival, and love. Can an alien warrior have it all?

Lazet hates rules and thinks commitment is for idiots. Then Melody knocks him off his feet, and Lazet must change his view of the world, or die living by rules that no longer suit him.

Melody Marlin, never knew her father and was tending the bar her mother owned at an early age. She learned how to handle the rough customers and officials who forbid alcohol several years later. She learned to make an alcoholic beverage to earn the needed credits to keep the bar going and to save for her escape off Earth. Her mother received phony pills to offset the effects of the radiation and she gets progressively weaker. Melody was luckier and received the real anti radiation tablets.

Finally Melody had enough credits to buy passage on a small star ship, the Capella, and made friends with several other traveling young women. All at once they are attacked by the vicious Franken. They take the young women, kill the males, and then blow up the ship. No one will be looking for the women. The women are treated poorly. Little water to drink, none to wash themselves, and a pill twice a day, barely enough sustenance to keep them alive.

One of their group was too terrified to stay quiet and took the first opportunity to escape their cell. She was immediately killed. Then, they came for Eloise, the Intergallactic Council negotiator. She was to be the prey in their cruel games where the prey is always killed, usually in a very bloody and painful way. She was never again seen by her cellmates.

Now, they have come for Melody. Melody has no intention of going quietly to her death. She is feisty with long red hair, bright blue eyes, fair skin, and a curvy body. She is thrown into an area that is freezing cold and covered with snow. The Franken gave her an inadequately warm coat, thin boots, a few ration bars, a small medical kit and a healing/numbing stick. The trees are bare, but there are some small caves and quite a bit of underbrush to hide in. She knows that one of the fiercest warriors, in the galaxy, a Vorten, is to kill her, so she sets a trap at the entrance to the cave she is in.

Lazet is part of the elite Vorten warrior group taken away from their primary mission of guarding the wormhole to the galaxies to fight in the Franken's evil games. Lazet too had a rough start to life. He was born small and weak and his mother put him out the door to die. Luck was on his side as he was found by a crippled women, despised by her fellow Vortens for her weakness. She raises Lazet and soon begins his warrior training, even though he is smaller than his peers, he worked harder and gained the attention of Vorten's most famous warrior Axen. He selected Lazet for his elite team of warriors. Axen had nearly 5 years of fighting for the Franken. The team find the work degrading and while they don't mind dispatching those from worlds where evil pervades, the though of having to kill a weak human, a woman at that, they consider dishonorable. Axen, with a little help from one of his team and a Deorg, named Urel, was able to escape with Eloise.

Lazet is chosen to kill the next human. He plans on killing her swiftly and as painlessly as possible. When thrown into the game, he is better equipped for the frigid cold, has more food, and of course a veritable arsenal of knives on his person. He soon sniffs out where he can find his prey and enters the cave, only to be suddenly strung up by his feet. He is furious to be outsmarted by a human, a female at that.

I found this story similar to the first, but the characters themselves, make the book really fun. He is trying to save her, and she does not believe him and refuses to do almost anything he tells her to do. Their personalities are well-matched. This is another non-stop action book with lots of scary moments as they begin to find themselves reluctantly enjoying each other's company. There are some unique aspects to this story, but we get our H/h saved at the end and they realized before that point that they would do anything to save the other. There are sex scenes along with our HEA. I rated this book 5 exciting stars. I've already purchased the next two books and will start Thund tomorrow.

i didnt like this one as much as i liked the first one. the reason being because Melody was stupidly stuck in her ways... like there's not trusting someone because of questionable situations and then there's not trusting someone after they literally just get done telling you "hey i'm about to go over here and lie to these guys so they dont get suspicious of us and we can keep doing our thing to get free"... she got a little stupid with her trust issues... but at least she only ran off like an idiot one time and almost got killed. if she had kept running off and almost getting killed i might have had to put the book down... not that she didnt try.. but Lazet, bless his heart, grabbed her and made her listen to reason... if it weren't for his funny ass i think this book would have been lost... although i definitely appreciated her love of animals and the fact that she saves the little beloc... because that is something i would totally do... even if it distracted me. so i wasnt totally disappointed in this book i just got a bit frustrated when she took the whole trust thing to another level... but whatever.. i'll probably still read these books because i want to know where the over all story arch is going. i'm very eager to read Jessie's book and i believe that one is next. so i still recommend this one to keep going with the story.

The second in the Vortex Warrior Series is about Lazet and his prey Melody, another female captured by the Fraken. His orders from the Fraken was to kill the prey so they could win money on his fight. But he also had orders from his warrior leader not to kill the prey, but make sure to put on a good show. Surprise! Axen and Eloise are alive and now Lazet has orders to get Melody out of the games. His only problem is dealing with a fiery red head female from earth. Once again, he has to gain her trust first and convince her that he was going to get her out safely. Once again the author going above and beyond in character development. You can clearly identify the characters and visualize them. After reading the first book of this trilogy, you know that the author is not going to let you down with the story from beginning to end. There's adventure, action, romance, and an unexpected addition to the team. Truly a page turner and I was so into this trilogy, I read straight through in a fairly short time span, but I read fast. If you read the first book, and this one, the next in the series will not be a disappointment. I highly recommend this author and series. Happy reading my friends!

Live action re-play

Those illegal hunting "games" run by the Fraken tyrants are still happening. Just because the last game was aborted when the predator escaped with his prey is no reason the give up the betting wealth the games produce. But the next Voten warrior will face Melody, and she's one tough human! Predator and prey must break through fear and mistrust in order to form a partnership and rescue themselves from their deadly game. Any bets on where love falls into the strategy? Good action, steamy romance, and an epidemic of noble self sacrifice loom large in this action/adventure alien romance.

Second book in an alien romance series. Human women are forced to be prey in an intergalactic game where they prey are always killed. But the hunters are no longer following the rules and won't kill them any more. This story brings Lazet, an alien warrior that has had to prove himself over and over. And the human man woman, Melody, won't be killed easily and will fight with everything she can. But things change for both of them once they meet.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of the book.

OMG. I gave up at 40%, so this is a “Did Not Finish” book, I risked breaking my iPad to try to continue. This is a continuation from book 1 (which I liked), I had hoped this would be good too. The flow was choppy. The characters were definitely not likable. Melody especially drove me insane. Lazet was only slightly better, neither should have been main characters. The big gripe, so much repetitiveness of inner dialogue for Melody, if that had been trimmed down, it would have helped the story a bit. At the point I stopped, I was disappointed the mutant Fraken wolves didn’t kill them both.

Lazet

As with the 1st book Axen, Arcadia Shields has done a great job of making the story seem real and the characters just as believable. Looking ideas to the next 2 books in the series. Shields has written in a way that captures you into believing that you are right there with the people & events taking place. If you haven't read any of this authors' book then you really need to. It's the expectation of what's to happen that makes it so interesting.

A bit disappointing

I liked the first book in the series real much, so it was not much of struggle to buy the second book, BUT this was disappointing, first, because it was a bit boring, Melody was annoying and stupid and actually I could not wait till the end of the book. It did not come fast enough.

A well-written plot filled action, adventure, chemistry and heat, a strong willed woman and a bad-ass alien warrior. Although it's the second book of a series but you can read it as a standalone.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Another game another win. More deadly, more distinctions, and more fun. Love once again can bloom anywhere bombs, knives and lasers are present

Stupid h

The heroine in this book falls under the too stupid to live category. I couldn't get past her "temper" to finish the book. It was painful.
