A little less invested in Darby and Michael in the long run but still an amazing love story. I enjoyed the story from Darby's POV better in book 1. I was glad to get Michael's insight but maybe his POV was more introspection than I was hoping for. I like a male character showing his soft and vulnerable side but it was a bit overdrawn here for me. That being said, I did enjoy their journey as a whole.

🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧

I'm a bit disappointed with the conclusion of Darby and Michael's love story.

The first book was great in character and relationship development, but this one was all over the place.

It starts right where the first one finished, but this time, with Michael's POV.
I was dying to be inside his mind, but in the end, he wasn't really the same as before.
He was insecure, confused and not nearly as put together as we thought.

This second part ain't centered on their relationship or even on the romantic side of the story. Until half of the book they're not even on the same continent!
There's lots of political drama, father's issues on both sides, professional doubts and bunches of fillers that made this second book way less entertaining than the first.

When they finally decide to be together and real about their feelings for each other, things got easier for me to enjoy too.

I still love their connection and their love story. I just wish this second book was more focused on that than all the random plots.

🎧 About the Audiobook Narration 🎧

Sebastian York gives life to Michael and I really love his voice and interpretation!
It definitely helped me to get through the boring parts of the story, and made me really happy on the good parts.

I adored #1 in this series so snapped this concluding half of the story up immediately after. It wasn't quite as much to my taste as the first half purely because I'm not much for ultra rich people in romance (because it always feels like they're playing on easy to me) and somehow the wealth of the characters, without having changed from book 1, felt more obvious in how it eased their path here. That said, if you like mill/billionaires you'll love this, and in any case the writing is skilled, fluent, witty and engaging and very sexy. Duo highly recommended for contemp-lovers, with bonus for inclusion of multiple kinds including a completely chill bi hero.

Snapdragon (book 1) was one of my favorite reads of 2018 and although it doesn’t end with the typical HEA, I was satisfied with its conclusion and didn’t feel a frantic need to read the sequel right away. In fact, I loved the unconventional ending and would have been satisfied if that was it. But I know that many readers would disagree and have to have a hea that they can rest easy in. Chrysalis was that hea.

Chrysalis was a definitive conclusion to Darby and Michael's romance, but again it didn't feel required. The languid romantic pacing that engrossed me in the first book felt drawn out and staid in this second outing. I did like the development of both characters and was shocked by a couple of revelations, but I didn't love this sequel. While not a favorite, I'm satisfied in knowing that they get their sweet hea in Chrysalis, but Snapdragon will continue to be my preferred of the two.

***Audiobook Review***
Chrysalis by Kilby Blades is book 2 in the Gilded Love series. I loved that in this book we get the second part of Darby and Michael's story told from Michael's POV. This audiobook is narrated by Sebastian York. His rich alpha male voice certainly doesn't disappoint, and is just the perfect choice to voice Michael. Sebastian York is fantastic at bringing Architect Michael to life showcasing his loyal, protective, and creative sides. Not to mention, Michael is totally swoon-worthy with his love and dedication to Darby in the way he supports and cares for her as he figures out his true feelings. Plus, Sebastian portrays these dreamy characteristics in all the best ways. After calling "snapdragon" and Michael moves to his new job halfway around the world, these two soon find that they need each other in their lives, and will find a way to make their love a reality, but there are quite a few obstacles along the way.

Overall, I really enjoyed this audiobook and story. If you love a romance with a hot charismatic lover, brave determined female, more steamy times, political drama, a little bit of mystery, loyal friends, and finally, sigh... a soul satisfying HEA, then I recommend this book. Bonus: Erin Mallon narrates the epilogue in Darby's POV and will make your heart so happy. I'm looking forward to reading/ listening to more from Kilby Blades.

4 Star Review Chrysalis (Gilded Love #2) by Kilby Blades

AUDIO REVIEW:

Having just finished Snapdragon I looked forwarded to listening to Chrysalis which is Michael’s point of view. Narrated by Sebastian York who was perfectly cast as Michael in my opinion. To me his voice screams alpha determined, billionaire men which is Michael.

The story drew me in as Michael realized he has made the biggest mistake of his life when he chose the job over Darby. Now focused on making up for his decision and convincing Darby to take another chance on him, things become complicated as it appears he is about to go head to head with Darby’s father.

Who will win Darby’s support the man she has fallen for, or her father? Things are about to become very complicated. Will Michael be able to keep Darby safe when her father puts her in danger with the mafia?

You’ll have to one click to find out.

This book continues where Snapdragon left off and is in the POV of Michael.
I don’t know which book I liked more seriously being in Darby’s head or Michaels it is an epic love story. I liked that we see how hard they both fall even knowing they both went in with expectations.

Guidelines that well didn’t take into account hearts. I really enjoyed the low drama they were adults and worked things out like adults do. The fact that we get this well rounded relationship that does have its ups and downs. No one blamed the other one, no pointed fingers. And when the other one needed someone they were there for them. No questions.
The sided stories fueled the rest of the book made me need more find out more want more.
I was left with just happy feelings; I want more romance like this!

The narration for this book was perfection, Sebastian is the right choice for Michael hands down.

“His light for her is brighter than the sun.”

Chrysalis is the 2nd book in the Gilded Love series and it continues the story of Michael and Darby. It picks up directly after the end of Snapdragon.

First, let’s talk about the things I absolutely loved:

This book was written in Michael’s pov which made it soo interesting. We are introduced to some of his complexity in Snapdragon but it is not expanded upon so I really loved getting to know his story.
There is also a bit of a mafia-esque conflict in this book which I really enjoyed, although I did really wish the stakes were higher and there was more tension.
There is a happily ever after! After reading Snapdragon, I was unsure where the main characters were going to stand, but I am really happy with how it ended.
Also, his pet name for her is CUPCAKE BECAUSE SHE LOVES TO BAKE… ugh I love it

Okay, now the cons:

SO. MUCH. INNER. MIND. MONOLOGUES.
Now if you like that kinda thing, this is totally for you. I’d say there is a bout 60% inner monologues and 40% dialogue in this book. I just get super bored of that so at some points, this book was a bit hard for me to get through.
And then again, the low-stakes conflict wasn’t my favorite. I felt like it could’ve been expanded a lot more.

That being said, I did enjoy this book and will be starting Vertical (the 3rd book) later today.

“You take such good care of me, baby”

“We take care of each other”

“Are you trying to talk me out of coming, because I’m on the back steps so you better open the door”

1.5 to 2. I don't know any more. I did mostly enjoy Snapdragon, but Chrysalis ended up being a mess. Michael, for all that appears good at any of his three careers, is just so flat. He worked better when he was something of a mystery where you didn't live in his POV. His motivations were kind of all over the map and didn't make a lot of sense. There seems to be a lot of drama that is so much more than needed. I kept reading because I kind of wanted to know how it ended, and I had a sick day, but probably should have read something else.

I read and enjoyed Snapdragon and at first, I worried this was just Snapdragon retold from Michael's point of view. This has been done for a few years now and I still don't know how I feel about it. It's kind of like when I take a chance on something on Netflix and afterwards I'm sitting there like, I don't know what happened, but I might need a hug.

This is actually the conclusion to Snapdragon in Michael's voice, whereas, Snapdragon is in Darby's voice. Chrysalis is dramatic, satisfying and the characters are likable. We all know what the arrangement in Snapdragon was-No strings. At the end, we know there are strings. We also know Michael is now in Sidney and Darby in Chicago.

At no point was I sitting there screaming for the two of them to just get married and have a million babies already. Instead, I just sat back and enjoyed watching two wary people come together in their own time, making much needed life changes.

If you're a sucker for romances with steamy scenes and happy endings, this would be a good series to pick up

A hot 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 conclusion to Darby and Michael's story.

I'm so glad that I didn't start reading this series until after all of the books were published. As soon as I finished Snapdragon I couldn't wait to dive in to Chrysalis and the conclusion of the hot as fire love story between Darby and Michael.

This book is told from Michael's POV and performed very well by Sebastian York. We learn so many new things about Michael; things he's kept from Darby. Several characters got what they deserved and Michael and Darby got a wonderful HEA. It's not exactly a traditional HEA but these two never did do things like most people.

These two books are going to stick with me for a while and I'm very glad that I listened to them.

"Chrysalis" is book two in the "Gilded Love" series by Kilby Blades and was an excellent follow-up to the first book, Snapdragon. This book was from Michael's viewpoint, and I absolutely loved it. It picks up where the first book left off, and I thought it was a great idea to do it from Michael's view. It was nice seeing how and what he thought of Darby. My favorite part is what Darby gets Michael for a Christmas present. Kilby is a great author and sure does know how to keep you invested in her books.

I absolutely loved Snapdragon. It was my favorite book that I've read this year, but I had a difficult time getting immersed in the sequel, Chrysalis. I was looking forward to reading about the relationship from Michael's perspective, but this book dragged on and on.

Constantly reading about how much Michael loved Darby and his fear of being honest about his feelings grew tiresome after awhile. By the time I was a third of the way through the book, I rushed through the rest of it and started skipping pages so that I could get to the end.

The odd thing is that Michael was more intriguing when I saw him through Darby's eyes in Snapdragon. When we observe events through Michael's mind in the sequel, he isn't nearly as interesting as I thought. Basically, he's successful at everything he does but has some anxiety issues. Even though there are times when he suffers from imposter syndrome and anxiety, it never gets to the point where it's crippling or keeps him from ever achieving any of his goals. As a result, his emotional issues don't come across as very significant and don't really cost him anything.

Multiple storylines were wrapped up. Initially, I was interested in Darby's relationship with her father and wanted to find out what would happen to him. The father's storyline was so convoluted that by the end of it, I didn't care anymore. The plot involving Darby's father may have suffered because he doesn't have a real presence in the book. Everything that happens to him is told from a distance.

There was also a storyline about Michael's father. It was supposed to give insight into who Michael is, but it mostly felt like filler content. Ultimately, Michael's relationship with his father didn't change at all from the beginning to the end of the book. It seemed pointless.

While I was completely captived by Snapdragon, I was sorely disappointed by the sequel. Reading Chrysalis was like being on a ride that lasted too long and I couldn't wait for it to be over.

This is the second and final book in the Snapdragon-Chrysalis duology. This did not give me the same sense of immediate high that I got from the first books, but it is still excellently written and the couple chemistry is very much still there.

As the first one was told through Darby's POV, this one is all Michael. From Darby's POV we saw a very sexy, charismatic, urbane man who is at the height of his career and has the world at his feet. But as we learned in the last couple of chapters as Michael opened up a bit, that was not all who he was. He was so successful because he was a bit of a workaholic because he'd come from humble beginnings, has some abandonment issues, felt he had something to prove and also had a bit of imposter syndrome.

This book begins right where the prior book ended. Michael has Snapdragon'd Darby because he was transferred to Australia to head up his company's offices down under. And of course Darby's life is still in Chicago.

But we know from him that that is not the end. He wants more from Darby, not just the no-strings but he wants the messy and complex. He is a long term planner and thinker and strategist so he plans a campaign to get Darby on board with changing the shape of their relationship even as they are thousands of miles away from each other and he's not sure that is what she wants.

Because they are distant and cant go on impromptu dates, the first part of this book is much more about Michael than it is about Michael and Darby. We delve into the stuff we only tangentially learned about him. His family, his background, his causes and his work. This initial part is why I take a star off of my rating, the relationship between these two is the absolute star of these books so to have it in the background (even if it is in the forefront of his mind) serves to give the book a little bit of lag.

But events happen and it brings the relationship roaring back to the front. Michael has to go back to Chicago for a bit and starts his campaign in earnest to woo Darby but also he uses his formidable contacts to also help her when she needs him again.

At about the 50% mark these two kids are all in and madly in love and the writing is just lovely. I really just felt their connection so deeply. Now all they have to do is iron out the pesky details. Which they do with the flair and panache these two have demonstrated throughout the series.

Honestly, I enjoyed this couple so much. They are young, beautiful and smoking hot sexy. They are rich but have real jobs they work hard at (and the author demonstrates that in detail, not just via lip service). They travel to cool places, they eat well, and they appreciate art, books and music. They are ambitious, have cool and dedicated friends and they know how to communicate like grown ass people. Also, Michael is an absolute genius at the romantic gesture.

Lovely story!

Amazing Story & Narration🎧 Captivating & Heartfelt!

Chrysalis
Gilded Love, Book 2
By: Kilby Blades
Narrated by: Sebastian York

Kilby Blades delivers an amazing sequel and ending to Darby and Michael’s story which began in “Snapdragon” the first book of the “Gilded Love” duet. This book is told in Michael’s point of view and picks up after the first book ended, an ending I did not see coming but one that had to happen, according to Michael. I highly recommend reading or better yet listening to the audiobook edition of the first book, not only is it an amazing story but everything that happens in that book leads up to this book and a lot of those storylines that start in there get wrapped up in this book. A lot about Michael was kept a mystery in the first book, what made him tick and do the things he did, it is great to learn more about him and why he did what he did. Darby and Micheal kept in touch, she focused on her career and new position, one she never thought she have so soon, Michael finally got the position he was aiming for, but neither one was truly happy with their successes. Michael continues to look in to what is going on in the south side and his investigation points to an unlikely source and it winds up going full circle because it pointed to others he was looking into. Kilby Blades wove a mighty complex web in this duet and she does a fantastic job bringing it all together and answering and solving investigations in a tidy way, giving closure to Darby and attempting to get on top of the issues in his old neighborhood and helping those in need. The cherry on top is how he masterminds and works his way back in to Darby’s life and her heart. I love, love, loved how everything played out in this book and series, it is a beautifully written and brilliantly plotted story with a perfect balance of drama, twists and turns, heartfelt emotions and a romance that was always meant to be. Kilby Blades, thank you for this wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the amazing narration, Sebastian York delivers another top-notch performance, bringing these characters and their stories to life. He has a complete understanding of the characters he portrays, giving each a voice that suits each character’s persona perfectly and sounds believable in every role he plays. He sets the perfect tone for the story, captures all the characters’ emotions and projects them into his performance. Sebastian York’s talent has not bounds, he an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another exceptional listen.

Kilby Blades, ‘Chrysalis’.
Gilded Love, book 2.

As an Hidden Gems ARC reader I received a free copy of this books and voluntarily promised an honest review. Here it is.

In general: From Friends-with-Benefits through Long Distance Lovers to an Original HEA.

My rating: 4,5 (of 5 stars).

This book is the sequel to Kilby Blades’ “Snapdragon”, a novel I reviewed in december 2020. The main characters in book 1 en 2 are:
- Darby Christensen (33), psychopharmacologist in Chicago and daughter of a controversial senator. Now, since about a year she has a ‘friends-with benefits’ relationship with
- Michael Blaine (32), also living in Chicago and a famous architect with an international career.
When they started their relationship, both didn’t believe in love. So only a physical bond that either of them could end with the code word ‘Snapdragon’. That was all: no further explanations, discussions or other showings of emotion. But the physical attraction was strong, they got involved in each other’s lives; emotional feelings and love were not far away.

The book ‘Chrysalis’ starts with Michael accepting a big promotion. He becomes chief of the Australian branch of his company. So he has to live 10.000 miles from Darby and tries to use snapdragon petals to indicate the end of their relationship. But both are already too emotional involved with the bond they have. At first they deny it to themselves but in fact they start a long distance relationship with phone or video calls between Chicago and Sydney almost every day. Their relationship is in transition like the birth of a beautiful butterfly in a cocoon or chrysalis.
The author, Kilby Blades, describes with much feeling and insight how their relationship deepens in spite of complications with their families and careers. The additional characters are interesting and credible; the plot is original. So the author created a novel that again - for me - was a pleasure to read.

Chrysalis is the ending we’ve all been waiting for for Darby and Micheal following their year long relationship in the first book, Snapdragon. This time it’s Michaels story and it highlights their new relationship which for the most part is long distance and in limbo. After going their separate ways from their “friends-with-benefits” relationship, the feelings that they realized they felt for each other allow them to fall into this unspoken relationship while they find the courage and the right time to go all in. Darby and Michael both experience some crazy life changes and with each other by their sides, they begin to realize what they really want.

I was looking forward to this book and I’m sad to say I was a little disappointed. I absolutely loved the first book, Snapdragon and this conclusion to Darby and Michaels story just didn’t hit the same as their beginning. It was still really great story, it was just different this time. I still absolutely loved their close connection, their connection was on a whole other level and it was extremely romantic. Maybe a little too much for me, but it works. I really enjoyed the vigilante work and the political savvy of Darby. I knew she had grown up in the middle of politics but I liked that she put it all to good use. Kilby did a wonderful job on this book and I’m happy to finally see Darby and Michaels HEA. Overall great book, definitely recommend this book for those who like a modern romance.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

The Perfect Conclusion

Snapdragon, the first novel in this duet, totally blew me away, so I was anxiously anticipating Chrysalis, the second half of Darby and Michael's love story. Whereas Snapdragon was the edification of lust - the beginnings of that once in a lifetime romance, Chrysalis is the love - the development and continuation that will hopefully culminate in a final commitment. It may not be as intense, but it is certainly equally satisfying.

Of course there were other aspects of both Darby's and Michael's lives, primarily work and family issues, that went beyond their intimacy. These aspects were not lost and their continuation was very well incorporated into this book. But, in the big picture, aren't these also a part of any relationship? Suffice it to say that the story is complete and there were no strings left hanging by the end of this book.

Chrysalis is the very satisfying culmination of an epic romance. Kilby Blades' ability as a writer, to continue to develop the characters and their relationship, and to carry you along with them, is as evident here as it was in Snapdragon.

I have a very strong feeling that this Love Conquers None duet will remain in my top 10 list and be read more than twice (can't say more than once as I've already read it twice) and that Kilby will be one of my go to authors. If you love a great love story, this one's for you.

“Chrysalis” is the second part of Darby and Michael’s story. It’s such an unconventional love story and it was amazing! It became more than two people finding each other. Through a course of events, they find themselves in the process.

Darby and Michael had a whirlwind of a romance that was meant only to be a fun time. Both developed feelings but when life brings new opportunities, they part ways as lovers but remain friends. However, both are still very much into each other and through a course of events, they find their way back to what they were plus more.

I was so involved with their story and love the plot twist we got! It added some suspense to the story. We knew Darby’s Dad was shady because of her past and her lack of involvement of wanting to be around him.

Michael is so sweet and genuine, you can’t help but fall for him too. He went through so much as a child and is still working some of that baggage. Darby has been through so much as well even though she never had to worry about some of the things Michael did. Their attraction brought them together but their need to break through their pasts kept them together and made them the couple they are.

Sebastian York narrated “Chrysalis” solo and it was amazing. He brought Michael to life and was the perfect choice for him. Sebastian’s alpha voice was a delight to listen to. I’ll never get tired of it.

Universal

The pace of this sequel was far slower than Snapdragon, and I found myself putting it down more than once. I wanted less introspection by Michael, and a lot more of the two of them together, rather than him away and texting her. I mean come on, you love her, so go get her!!! This was a big letdown for me, unfortunately, not the conclusion I was looking for for this couple.

This is review of both Snapdragon and Chrysalis since you can’t talk about one without discussing the other. The books tell the story of Darby and Michael who meet at a wedding and decide to become friends with benefits. The first book is from Darby’s POV and the second from Michael’s.
There’s a lot I liked about these books. The timeline is one. Characters in romance novels often go from a meet cute to a HEA in about two weeks, but these two books span more than 18 months. This gives both the romance and the MCs time to grow.
I loved Darby and Michael. Both are clearly flawed but they are always supportive towards each other. They are also both very good at their jobs and isn’t always great to read about competent people?
I also loved how at the end of the first book they end their FWB arrangement but this doesn’t become a dark moment. It just gives them the opportunity to figure out what kind of relationship they want.
Kilby Blades pays so much attention to details, which made the books very rich. Her prose is beautiful. There are a lot of pages before Darby and Michael find their HEA, some of which include some external obstacles, but the focus is always on these two MC and their relationship.
And I can’t leave the non-wedding at the end unmentioned. Loved it!

🎧 Audio Review 🎧

This book is the continuation of the Snapdragon story line with Michael & Darby. In the first book we got a to read about their relationship, getting to know each other and falling in love. In this book their story continues to develop but all the secondary storylines from book 1 come to the front so we get more than just the romance. This book has a lot more going on, a little more drama but not relationship drama which I loved. I also loved that these characters were adults, they created no unnecessary drama, there was no angst and they just worked on figuring out how to best be happy and not just happy together but what each of them needed as a person. When I finished this book I felt happy and carefree (maybe a little jealous too) which is exactly what I want from a romance book.

The narration was great, I love Sebastian York. He was a perfect casting choice for Michael.

Gilded Love, Book 2
By: Kilby Blades
Narrated by: Sebastian York

Picking up where Snapdragon lets off, we hear Michael in Australia and Darby in the states. Both miserable and now the contact is just beginning to heat up They both know they are in love, but neither will admit it to the other. Michael’s heart is in Chicago and Darby just wants to be with him. Realizing they both are in professions they are not passionate about, plans begin to develop, but Michael is still harboring a secret that could blow them up. What will happen when all is revealed? Will their love be able to stand the distance and the secrets?Kilby Blades finishes out this story with a bang. It’s an incredible build to the relationship and a deception that will blow your mind. I love this duet. It is everything i love with a little suspense, a twist I didn’t see coming and a romance that filled my heart.

Sebastian York gives us Michaels point of view in this s narration and he is fantastic. Always on point he creates Michael with that warm heart. Erin Mallon ha the epilogue wrapping it all up and giving me happiness.

Micheal's point of view is thrilling because he is so sensitive to all input, takes it all in, tries to control himself and his reactions, and often winds up on the verge of an anxiety attack. He is so success driven, and so vested in his art, youth and South Side philanthropies not counting a rewarding side career drawing graphic books and a challenging love affair with Darby, Chief of Psychiatry, that his life constantly is an ever changing kaleidoscope of new excitement. But all these challenges makes him the talented artist, manager, and lover that he is! His mixed DNA makes him a tall, dark headed, blue eyed, drool-worthy Adonis. And Kilby Blades' telling of time in his personal chrysalis is not to be missed: lovely descriptions of the pain and glory associated with Darby and Michael's old world passing away while they develop their new selves!

5 undying love stars

Kilby Glades has been a revelation to me. She's written a heartfelt, sexy love story between two adults who act like adults and have the career pressures that many adults do, and I loved it. I also loved that the HEA was modern and befitting of two people who are independent and perfectly capable of standing on their own to feet. As in the best and healthiest relationships, they were able to be there to love, support, and help each other. I also appreciated how thoughtful this couple was about their decision to have children or not, and how the author highlighted that in our modern world it is a choice and not an obligation. For that alone this book gets 5 stars. Plus it was just so romantic and I loved that. I'm also so glad that she didn't manipulate the reader with drama between the couple that came from miscommunications. I can't wait to read the next book in this series and more from Kilby Glades.

Following on from Snapdragon, which left us with not quite a huge cliffie, but nevertheless left us with many questions with regard to Darby’s father, and his misdoings, and of course I had the overwhelming need for Darby and Michael to get their happy ever after. Their ‘not a love story’ rapidly becomes a long distance friendship with lots of video messaging, messaging and phone calls, with a huge possibility for it to become a forever love story, if they’d just stop their facade and admit to their feelings. A proper feel good love story with some added drama from the corrupt Chicago officials. This time the story is written from Michael’s point of view (great to find out about his struggles and insecurities), and Sebastian York narrates perfectly (as always), and there’s also a cameo from Erin Mallon for the epilogue. A joy to listen to.

This is the second part to Darby and Michael's story continued from Snapdragon. This time it's told from Michael's point of view taking up where Snapdragon leaves off. Sebastian York narrating is a bonus to the story. Even though in Snapdragon, they have decided that they won't fall in love with each other, they both have but don't tell each other. Michael is transferred to Australia and decides to end their current relationship by having Darby go to a hotel room filled with Snapdragons which is their "safe word" to end the relationship. He hopes he can get through to her to show her that he loves her before she cuts him out of her life. Michael is always taking care of other people and he's always there for Darby when she needs him. Even though the ending isn't the usual HEA, it certainly fits Michael and Darby perfectly.
