Hiro Mashima (Jap: 真島ヒロ) is a Japanese manga artist.
He gained success with his first serial Rave, published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1999 to 2005. His best-selling work, Fairy Tail, published in the same magazine from 2006 to 2017, became one of the best-selling manga series with over 72 million copies in print. Mashima began the currently ongoing Edens Zero in 2018.
Fairy Tail won the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen manga in 2009, and Mashima was given the Harvey Awards International Spotlight award in 2017 and the Fauve Special Award at the 2018 Angoulême International Comics Festival.
So, I am writing my reviews on a volume by volume basis. This might be a crazy endeavor, but I just wanted to make that clear so that no one thinks this 2 star rating is a reflection of what I think about the series. As a whole the series has been a goof read. Does it WOW me? No. But, this volume in particular kinda rubbed me the wrong way.
The main focus of the story was to end the drama on the demon island and then to set up more drama between Fairy Tail and a rival guild. So, story wise it was fine. You even get some Jellal in this volume, which is always nice. I think I like him, he has a misunderstood bad boy air about him, that I always fall for. But, here is what got me and it may seem so little and insignificant but it really made me cringe and think about it long after. This was the interaction between Makarov, the Fairy Tail guild master, and Lucy. Makarov was a little drunk and slaps Lucy on her butt, twice .
I can overlook the way women are portrayed in Fairy Tail. Because lets be honest, in just about all the manga you will read you will have scantily dressed woman, with body types that are down right outrageous. I also understand that Lucy and the girls are destined to find themselves in compromising situations that accentuate those crazy bodies.
Honestly, the amount of fan service is fine to me. I don't mind it, I expect it. And if you throw in more Grey shirtless scenes, I am one happy camper. But the slapping of Lucy's butt as punishment? When Natsu and Grey get a slap on the head, is ridiculous and I could not stomach it. Especially since I feel like it is disrespectful and gross. Makarov may be a perv but that's just sexual harassment. Here is the scene.
I was completely shocked. I always felt like even though Lucy has this air-headed feel to her, and she is scantily dressed in just about every scene, she still had my respect. And I believed she won over all of the other characters respect as well. But in this scene she does not receive the respect she deserves.
So, call me a feminist, but I don't care. It may seem like a little thing, but it really painted this volume in all the wrong light. I am not going to give up on the series, but I do long for a shift in behavior from at least Markarov. He is supposed to be the good guy for goodness gracious. If it's absolutely necessary for Lucy to get spanked, don't have her sexually harassed by her own team that's supposed to respect her. That's my only beef. And with the ending of this volume I am hoping for better in the next volume.
The closure of Gray's backstory arc and the introduction of a new enemy guild, it's more important upon reflection and features faces that become very familiar in the future.
I actually cannot tell whether the manga just "picked up" or if it's simply the fact that I'm reading physical volumes now, but I feel more invested than I was previously. It probably helps that I bought Volumes 1 through 20 from a guy selling them all, then the third box set (compiling 23 through 33) from another chick, and the Zero volume from Amazon, and the first fifteen volumes of 100 Year Quest, and the first thirty volumes of Edens Zero - Jesus Christ - all weighing on me, like almost literally due to the combined weight of all these books, to force me to appreciate Mashima's post-Rave works. But... Damn. I'm buckled in.
I hadn't been writing my opinions on most story arcs as they've gone by, since they've all been pretty short so far. The Reitei Lyon Arc is pretty good, but there's a degree to which it feels very much like early One Piece, which is actually praise, but it's also kinda weird how similar the vibes are when actual Jump manga don't crib from Oda. Good placement of flashbacks to add dramatic depth, good use of characters crying, good use of angry faces that really do look like Luffy (I'm talking about you, Natsu!). The fact that Deliora was already dead, killed by Ur, and merely suspended from its final moment until thawed is a neat poetic conclusion to Lyon's story.
Gajeel looks way cooler in his first appearance here than he does in the first PS4 game, with which I'm more familiar. I don't know if it's that Mashima will soften his style over time, or if the anime does it, or if the game character designer is different still.
Juvia looks waaaaay different in her first appearance than what I'm used to, being the playable character I find most attractive in the game.

Yep, that was the first thought I had when I finished reading about the Fairy Tail wizards' "fight" against Deliora. Some may say it was inevitable and that it was necessary else things would have gotten real messy but I'd still say that all of this—it was very convenient as to how it ended. I mean, to build up such a huge reputation, spend practically more than one volume (and we are talking about more than 200 pages here) on just one monster and then to end it all like this? Disappointment is an understatement in this case.
Moving further, the way this volume ended was surprising. Yet, that was also very, very convenient. I'll explain how. Anyone who has read the blurb knows there are some complications with another guild. I like to call this the Phantom arc. Now the thing about the Phantom arc is that everyone goes to war. Literally everyone. And only one—just one—person is left behind. And that is the one person who is supposed to be the reason why the war happened in the first place. Convenient, don't you think? Well, I do so. This was why I was mortified by how the sixth volume ended. Don't get me wrong, I love the Fairy Tail guys but this was unbelievable. I hope the writers builds up his standards once again or else I might have to ignore stop reading the manga (and watching the anime—the first time I did, I hadn't watched these episodes).
Man, "Fairy Tail" is just so awesome that I can't seem to stop reading it!... Wait, what's that? It's been over a month and a half since I read volume 5, despite the fact that I have the first 45 volumes just lying around?
Well, what do you know. I *can* stop reading it, after all. Somehow, while I find the series entertaining, I don't find it very engaging.
So, I picked up where I left off - our heroes are fighting hard to stop a terrible demon from getting resurrected.
The good bits: this ends in a fairly surprising and fun way! The problem of villagers turning into demons at night is solved in a surprising and fun way, too! ("Destroy the moon!" they asked. "Okay, we'll do just that!" was our heroes' answer)
The bad bits: attempting to resurrect a demon which might kill a lot of people and wreak havoc is a punishable offence! The perpetrator will get a metaphorical slap on the wrist and be allowed to carry on.
The ugly bits: I'm starting to feel that there are too many whimsical, quirky characters who are meant to be funny in this story.
Worst of the lot so far! Building up the island mystery in volume 4 and 5 meant only to back it up with a strong ending. But that’s not the case in volume 6. Deliora, the ice caged monster for many decades cracks down once it has been revived by moonlight drips and so does the plot of Fairy Tail and its characters. Lucy, the glamorous one has been used only as a showcase doll and for vulgarity which is utterly dismaying and annoying. Does these manga authors don’t have any thoughts other than visualizing girls as teenage sex toys? Absolutely, nerve wrecking. I’m doubtful I would continue to read the series after this train wrecked volume 6.
4/5 Another good volume albeit not as good as the last. The Lyon Arc kind of ends on a fizzle instead of a bang. However we get some decent reveals. The big part for volume 6 is upon returning to Fairy Tail we are introduced to another guild Phantom Lord. The next few chapters are build up to what looks to be an even more promising Arc.
The members of the Fairy Tail guild on the cover of volume 6.
Another wonderful addition to the series, the story arc of Demon Island is over, and a new heartbreaking arc begins as another guild attacks Fairy Tail, and now it's war.
I have always loved comics, and I can and I have. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and I hope you will always love it. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics, Mangas, Mahwas, and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.
The end of a quest and the beginning of trouble. Gajeel and Levy didn’t have the best beginning. Seigrein annoys me but he makes a good bad guy and Ultear is tricky. The whole start of a guild war thing was chaotic and of course the damsel is kidnapped. Onwards to daddy issues.

I can't point to anything that makes this series truly unique, aside from the fact that the female characters make a decent showing as combatants. One can certainly question their character designs and how the artist chooses to clothe (or not-clothe) them. Sigh. Still, it's my favorite shonen manga and anime. Everybody's so silly and its general outlook is friendly, cheerful and hopeful. Fun, funny comfort reading.
I am so excited for the next part. Love the Demon Island adventure but the battle between Phantom Lord and Fairy Tail is one of my favorite parts. Can't wait to start the next one
The guild’s class-S quest has come to a sky-breaking end after a few setbacks, and the cursed island is now back to normal. Arriving back home however, they find their guild base destroyed by the hands of rival guild Phantom Lord and will not take it lying down one bit. A (100%/Outstanding)
Volume 6 wrapped up the Deliora arc and before it even seemed like it ended it started up the next arc! I dub thee the Fairy Tail vs Phantom Lord arc. That might even be the real name, who knows.
I was actually kind of worried, because I didn't remember how the gang ended up defeating Deliora. But it turns out that the reason I didn't remember how they defeated it was because . But honestly what more could you really expect from this series, amirite?
The new arc finally introduces Juvia and Gajeel, which is exciting! Gajeel is one of my favorite characters, by the way (along with Jellal, Laxus, Gray, Erza, and Natsu, in that order, with the first three being the mains). I was actually so surprised that they were originally from the same guild, because I did not remember that!! Wild!!!! I remember both their arcs being separate and big deals on their own, but this seems like they're going to happen simultaneously. We! Will! See!!!! That's why I'm re-watch-reading this series, right!?!? Because I ain't remember shit!!!!!! (Reading Fairy Tail has got me using a lot of exclamation points because Hiro Mashima uses a lot of exclamation points. I'm just being on-brand, okay!?!?!?)
Hiro Mashima's afterwards are always so concerning. He always casually mentions how he has ABSOLUTELY NO FLIPPING CLUE ABOUT WHAT THE HECK HE'S DOING WITH THIS SERIES. e.e. Like damn, the man literally had no clue what he was doing ever since the very start. How did he even get published... Honestly no one is allowed to be surprised at the quality of this series (or lack thereof).

I really liked this volume. We got more of an inside look into Gray’s background, I enjoyed his arc story and the closure he was able to get. Gray and Natsu never fail to make me laugh especially when they’re bickering like an old married couple, yet when it comes down to it they both support one another and know that in the face of an enemy the other shouldn’t be underestimated.
Shoutout to Ezra, Happy and Lucy because I love them just as much.
Now, this would have been a 5 but the reason for the half star is because… I was a little disappointed with the Deloria arc, the build up was good which made way for a good fight. However, the climax just wasn’t it. Even though I can see that this was the whole point— as it was for Gray to get closure and Lyon to finally draw a line on his past— it was underwhelming overall.
Also, the thing that irked me most was Lucy being spanked by Markov as punishment when the guys just got a slap across the head. This just screamed sexual harassment and I know that women as a whole are overly sexualised in manga, this still didn’t sit right with me.
Although, overall it was still a really good volume that I enjoyed a lot.
They kept fighting in this volume so the main story was almost same as volume 4 and 5, but the conflict between Gray and Lion was over. Then Deliora in the ice made by UR woke up but is died finally. To be honest, I expected that Gray and Lyon fight with Deliora so I was disappointed a little. However, they could break the curse finally so I enjoyed this volume.
This was actually good, its ending is predictable while Gray fights Lyon and defeats him and thereby learning of his masters truth meanwhile the demon Deliora emerges and the conclusion to that was shocking. But then FT must help the resident of Galuna Island and the way they do it is interesting. Next up Phantom Guild declares war on FT and they can only ignore it for so long until one of theirs is targeted! Its an all out war between the two guilds and its gonna be awesome! I love how this manga balances high scope actions with emotional moments and also giving characters some depths and the way the author manages to bounce into an even bigger arc is just remarkable and the art towards thee nd got really good!
World: Art is great. Love the sense of motion. Solid little character driven moment in world building. A wrap up of the last arc and a new arc and new pieces begin. Not a lot of depth.
Story: The end of the last arc was rather expected, some consequences but not a lot really. This arc was long so the end was good. The calm moments a are there but barely until the next thing happens.
Characters: Some nice little moments and of course Gray gets some closure and depth.
Solid and much needed end. I wish the quiet moments between arcs was longer.
Natsu, Gray, Lucy, Happy and Erza successfully completed their quest and uncover the mystery of the Galuna Island's demon. Return back to Magnolia, they find out that Fairy Tail's guild was wrecked attacked by the guild Phantom Lord. Phantom Lord have 4 S-class wizard known as Element 4 and also another Dragon Slayer, Kurogane Gajeel, the Iron Dragon. Master Makarov declared a war to Phantom Lord after they attacked Levy, Jet and Droy. Lucy confronted two of the Element 4, Juvia and Sol.
I've seen about 60 episodes of the anime (or whenever this Nirwana-Thing happened) and so I know at least a tiny bit about the story. After 60 episodes I lost interest, but now I believe that might change. I'm not saying I'm a Anime/Manga-Fan now, but I start to see why so many people love it. They are not just quick reads, they have so much more humor and it just looks amazing. Besides - that ending though... brutal.
This is the end of the arc and the beginning of another. It was a short, three volume, arc for the mission to the island. Now we are on to a guild war with another guild. I also find it interesting that there was a little plot twist at the end of the arc. It will be interesting to see where this all ends up.
We get the end of Gray's backstory arc and we get to see him change from then to now. Team Natsu go on some more cool quests/jobs like the moon demons. Amazing like always and I can't wait to read more.
