One Man's Opus: A Survival and Preparedness Story

Rate this book
Man's Best Friend
Rick is like many Americans. He’s concerned with what he sees on the news, and how the country seems to be ready to tear itself apart. His biggest concern has been civil unrest. Already an avid camper, he sets out to secure his future, and career, by finding his own Eden.

Tina is a small business owner and knows what she wants in life. She and her furry companion find themselves at gunpoint when Rick walks back into her world and forever changes the dynamic between them.

One dog, who’s been the savior, protector, and companion… Opus. The owner of two humans that mostly understand him. Mostly.

When the police walk into an ambush, a series of events forces the couple to bug out. The problem with having to leave for a small town, at a remote location, is it really isn’t a secret. Small towns bring their own problems with crime, and power plays. Everybody knows everybody, and the gossip mill runs as fast as lightning.

Will the trio be as prepared as they need to be?

Some women read romance as their secret pleasure, not me.  That stuff just makes me completely uncomfortable.  My secret reading pleasure is dystopian fiction.  If you've read my books, you know I  like delving into the breakdown of the fabric of a person's life and walking with my characters as they cope and come to terms, and ultimately survive, or not.  I am always fascinated by the resilience of people, and dystopian fiction is that, on a larger scale. I will clarify, that I don't do zombies, vampires, werewolves, or aliens.  I don't enjoy that, the eating of brains or sucking of blood or transformation from man to beast.  What I do enjoy in dystopian fiction is finding of normalcy in abnormal situations.

There are moments when I have legitimate fear that our country is at a precipice.  We have become so polarized as a people that we don't consider ourselves a "people" anymore, we are us and them with all our various tribal affiliations.  Yesterday morning there was an assassination attempt on several of our senators while they were practicing for a charity softball game.  How does that happen in our country?  When we make people "them" they become less real, and therefore less human, somehow.  I am concerned about the future of our country, and I don't know that we'll be able to heal ourselves without rending entirely apart and stitching back together the scars.  This is where my mind was yesterday when I felt the need to read and I needed something that followed my bent.  I came across this book, One Man's Opus by Boyd Craven, III and I liked the sample provided by Audible, so I bought the book and listened.

This book walked me off the ledge, so to speak.  Craven is a master story teller, with an easy style that feels almost conversational.  His story is couched in normalcy.  It is more of a survival journey than dystopian fiction, although the narrator speaks to the fears I feel for our society, fears of civil unrest, fears of the justification of brutality, he even touches on the murders of law enforcement officers over the last several years.  It's not a gritty story, it's really an introverts love story, and even better than that, it's a love story to a dog.  Opus.  I have had and loved, and lost, many great dogs, and Craven's depiction of Opus brought every single one of them out of the corners of my heart to walk again in my life.   It was a surprise to me. It was not what I expected, when I chose a dystopian novel, that I would weep as Craven gave his dedication because I remember very clearly the moments my dogs, Brick, Bonnie, Oscar last laid their heads on my lap or rested on my chest before heading to the last great sleep.

This book takes a moment in time, when chaos erupts, and shows a quiet love story for a dog.  It doesn't take the disruption of society to the brink, but rather shows the reality that for some people society is already broken and they live outside of it.  It was a good read, and I'm sure I'll be reaching for his next book, the next time I wonder, "How can this happen in America?"

I have to say that I was really surprised with how much I enjoyed this! It was different to what I thought it would be, but a good different. This focuses on Rick, an author who has made it big in the world of Paranormal Romance and is able to live off his sales. He is happy to be a loner and loves nothing better than to go camping by himself and only coming back to reality when he has to check email or send off his newest books! He knows that being prepared is important, but with riots happening near where he lives, he stumbles upon a prepper site that piques his interest. What follows is his journey into being prepared, just in case!

This isn't a post apocalyptic book, it's simply a book showing Rick's life and why he got into prepping. It's the everyday story of one man's journey and how he goes about starting to stock up. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and getting to know Rick. I loved seeing him open up to Tina and figure out what he wanted from their relationship. I also enjoyed learning a few bits from him!!

I have to say that I absolutely loved Opus!! He is definitely the star of the show and stole my heart. I have always wanted a German Shepherd but we have 2 terriers and they are more than enough to handle!! But reading about Opus and his training just makes me want one more. You can see that the author loves dogs :)

In all, this was such an easy to listen to, and relatable read. It makes for a nice change of pace from all the post apoc fiction out there!! The characters make the book and I really hope we see more from them!

What can I say about Kevin Pierce, that I haven't already. His performance is flawless and he is easy to listen. He knows how to preform these kind of books and always does it well.

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

One Man's Opus

Great read. Is this a quasi-self biography? Personally, I love romance books written by men.

I am hoping this has a sequel.

A refreshing and authentic apocalyptic tale

I wasn’t sure what genre that this book should fall into. It has a lot of pieces that could go into this genre or that one, but overall I felt that this was what I’ve called a “pre-apocalyptic” book mixed in with a Thriller and a little romance. But not that “new adult” kind of romance — actual friends falling for each other romance.

A lot of post-apocalyptic books have the “these are the last two people, so of course they fall in love” or similar storylines. One Man’s Opus was completely different. The love story in this was easily one of the most authentic and real I’ve ever read. Throw in Opus’s reaction to the two of them and I’m sold.

Now, add in the different scenarios and issues that come up during Rick’s prepping — now I’m even happier. I know that fictional books are just that: fiction. But sometimes a book can be written so well and is made to be so realistic that it feels like it actually happened to the author. The way that Craven writes about Rick — it was like it was an alter-ego mixed in with a mini version of himself. The different intricacies that were included like when an author is paid from Amazon or the time of day that Rick decides to write really added to the realism and authenticity.

Disclaimer: I’m a dog person. I freaking love dogs. Opus is easily one of the best characters I’ve ever read, and he’s the dog. He was weaved so well into the story that this story wouldn’t have been enjoyable without him. I have a dog who does similar vocalizations when you talk to him like a human and One Man’s Opus has me cracking up late into the night with all of the different interactions between Rick and Opus.

Overall, One Man’s Opus was one of the most refreshing and realistic “apocalyptic” stylized books I’ve ever read. I loved every character and I even enjoyed having the wool pulled over my eyes with the big reveal near the end. (I won’t spoil anything, but it was not at all what I expected).

This book is written in first-person, which usually means it takes me a while to get into it, but my interest was caught immediately. The writing is so smooth it is easy to feel like you are wrapped up in Rick Carpenter’s thoughts, which, of course, you are, but this story did an excellent job of inserting the reader into his internal workings. Rick thinks of himself as an introvert, but I think of him as someone who just needs to find the right people.

Rick shares a dinky apartment with Al, who likes to say ‘Dude’ a lot, along with other slang. It’s an interesting relationship, since Al is always ready to party and Rick is not into anything that involves social interaction. He likes to camp alone in the wilderness – very alone – where he will never run into other people. Using his solo time to good effect, Rick has become a writer. It used to be articles for websites and blogs, and the occasional science fiction for Amazon. One drunken night, Al dares him to write something outside his usual genre. Rick insists Al pick the category and, wouldn’t you know it, Rick is now a paranormal romance author. He’s amazed and somewhat embarrassed that he actually makes a living doing romances.

He gets along very well with Al’s family and is glad to take his jumper cables over to Al’s dad’s home to jump-start an old RV. Before he knows it, Rick is the proud owner of said old RV. Now what? Well, finding a place to park it is first. Al’s ex-girlfriend, Tina, who owns a mini storage, knows Rick in passing and it sounds like what she has is just what he needs. So, he has a place to fix up his home on wheels and discovers Tina has no problem helping make it road ready. Once it is good to go, he decides on the perfect ‘alone’ spot to move his RV to and write. Unfortunately, the small town he chooses has a big bias against anyone who might move a trailer park into their area. Since Rick has a large gravelled area for his RV, citizens have gotten the wrong idea, and he finds himself explaining that he has no intention of running a trailer park. Some people don’t care, they’ve decided they just don’t like him, or his RV, or the shed he built for storage. The inspector who is sent to approve everything insists that Rick is trying to sneak in a trailer park and tries to refuse his improvements. Fortunately, there are some people who take a liking to him and help him settle in. That is not the end of troublesome neighbors, so be prepared for plenty of action.

The narrative is interesting with a lot of Rick’s opinions, and his sudden decision to become a prepper and what it would entail. Ultimately, it involved buying groceries in bulk and never actually got into how preppers live. Rick and Tina have a sweet romance, but once he began to dwell on how beautiful and perfect she is, I began to doubt how anyone could be quite that wonderful. There are some fun characters and I did really enjoy those, but they also were near perfect. I happen to enjoy stories that end happily, I just don’t care for flawless characters. Everyone will have to decide for themselves what they think of this book. I enjoyed it enough to keep reading and many others will also.

The rating:

Genre and general reading age – Romance for adults and teens.
Level of sexuality – Low.
Is there graphic language? Very little.
Did I cry? No.
Did I laugh? Yes.
Is this part of a series? Yes, it is book one of the Survival & Preparedness series.
Level of character development – They are fairly well-developed.

I give this book ⭐⭐⭐.5 stars.

Very entertaining, engaging and enjoyable. I was really looking forward to this book and it did not disappoint. I really enjoyed it. Not really sure if I would classify it as post-apocalyptic story. It's more in the realm of civil unrest just bordering on a society changing event. It was refreshing take on events as far as a post-apocalyptic scenario. It was nice change that the story didn't dive right into a SHTF scenario. Even though it is a "Apocalyptic " type of story it's not full of violence and gore. It has some moments of suspense, mystery, drama, romance and death but it's on the lighter side, not intense constant mayhem.

Great cast of well rounded and likable characters. Rick, Tin and Sarge were all great characters. Opus pretty much stole the show at times. You can't help but fall in love with Opus he had a personality all his own.

The story itself felt "real" in the sense it's a scenario that you could really see yourself in if things started to collapse.

Rick sees the way things are going in the world and decides to make preparations/ prepare himself "just in case". Since he is a writer and likes to be alone at times camping with only his computer these preps fit right in with his life. As he gets farther into his prepping, things start to happen. Even though he has given himself an edge with his preparations there are some things you just never expect to happen. Rick's location is one of those things that will have an impact on his situation.

This is not the first Boyd Craven book I have listened to and as with the others I was not disappointed. Not sure if this is intended to be a series or a standalone story. If it is going to be a series, I will definitely be continuing with it.

Once again Kevin Pierce does a fantastic job with the narration. Perfect voice for narrating books. His voice just draws you into a story. Clearly spoken with a smooth even pace. Great character voices. He brings the story and characters to life through his narration. One of the most enjoyable narrators to listen to no matter what type of book it is.

Rick is a serious introvert and sort of a geek author. He thought he would write a different genre but, on a dare, he started writing paranormal romance which provides a decent living. A friend offers him an old RV and Rick re-meets Tina when he goes to ask to park the unit at her storage facility. In an unexpected situation he is surprised to meet her guard dog, Opus.

Rick goes camping and begins to set up a campsite/bug out place. He thinks he may need to be more prepared for rough times. Rick, with Tina visiting, spends more time at the RV especially as unrest and riots spread in the city. Most of the campsite neighbors are friendly but one man and his unpleasant friends object and look to cause trouble.

The relationship between Rick and Tina develops slowly, always with Opus making his presence known. Rick and Tina are very relatable, real to life characters and Opus is a gem. This is a charming romance story which moves along at a nice pace with the decisions of life and impact of friends added in.

I have read and enjoyed a couple of post-apocalyptic tales by Mr. Craven. This story is not post-apocalyptic but a preparedness story as stated. I was pleased to find this engaging even though it is not full of tension and action. It is not a steamy romance either; just a nice, warm love story. I recommend this to readers who enjoy a natural life, warm romance and might like the touch of prepper elements.

Audio Notes: Kevin Pierce does a solid job of narrating. He creates voices for characters and provides appropriate emotion while being a very easy listen. I enjoy his portrayal which added to my enjoyment of the book.

Rick is a isolated loner by choice, happiest when he's camping alone with his laptop for company. He's a paranormal romance writer who recently became successful. When the riots break out after the death of Freddie Gray, Rick stumbles on a prepper site and his interest is piqued. He lucks into an RV, a prime spot to park it, and with his new income starts to stock up on supplies. His new lady friend Tina and her "fuzzy buddy" German Shepherd Opus tag along, and when a police ambush causes riots and fires across the state, Rick is ready.

Even with no large apocalyptic event causing the world to go to hell, this one still kept my interest. This book is all about the little day to day details, and I think a newbie prepper could learn a lot from it. If you read to escape politics or current events, this book is loosely based on the riots and run up to the presidential election, and doesn't treat liberals kindly.

A lot of book lovers will relate to Rick and his social awkwardness, and wish they had an awesome woman like Tina by their side. As likable as Rick and Tina are, the real star of the book is Opus. Boyd Craven is obviously a dog lover and his descriptions of Opus bring the book to life. There's also Sarge and Annette, a hilarious older couple who bring some comic relief.

The narrator's pace and tone were perfect. He does sound quite a bit older than Rick's 26 years, but it didn't detract from the performance at all. I was given a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

It's like expecting a caramel and finding coconut.

Boyd Craven is a very talented writer. I thoroughly enjoyed his "Farm" series and thought "Opus" would be another in a similar apocalyptic vein. I was disappointed - at first. It's like picking out a square chocolate, expecting caramel, but biting into it and finding coconut. A disappointment for sure. But I like coconut too.

That was my conclusion after reading the first two of the three-book series. I didn't read the third book in the series. Not because I didn't enjoy Mr. Craven's writing. But because I'm just not into relationship stories with little in the way of action - when I think I've just settled down with a good TEOTWAWKI tale.

All that said, I gave the first two books 4 stars which is about the most I give anyone who's last name isn't Steinbeck or Michener. In my opinion, Mr. Craven's writing is some of the best around today. He develops a reasonable, believable plot. He fleshes out his characters well and makes them real to the reader. He paints excellent word-pictures of places and scenarios. He gets a bit wordy and bogged down in explanations and relationships but so did Faulkner. So, overall, he's a very good author. And the "Opus" series is engaging and entertaining. This series just wasn't what I wanted or was expecting.

The best recommendation I can make: I will read other books Mr. Craven has written - after I read the reviews to make sure I'm getting a caramel.

As a side note: As near as I can determine, Boyd Craven and Boyd Craven III are the same person but don't show up as one in Amazon nor Goodreads. If I'm wrong, someone should let me know.

One man's opus, What a dog."
This book was out of my comfort zone, something that normally I wouldn't even have looked at. But it had a dog on the cover, so I read the synopsis and it intrigued me enough to listen to the blurb. Again it intrigued me so I requested it. I loved this book I laughed, it was exciting, it had a bit of romance.
I'd love to listen to more of Boyd Craven work. This has a little bit teaser of another book at the end that sounds great, devil dog. I would love to listen to it too but can't afford it. Oh well maybe in the future.
The narrator made the story come to life. He has a gravelly but versatile voice I really loved listening to.

Although this is subtitled a survival and preparedness story, it's not really post apocalyptic or dystopian, and the preparedness aspect isn't all that significant in the story. It really has nothing to do with the suspense. This somewhat predictable story is more about relationships and small town politics with a little romance thrown in for good measure. There is tension and a little mystery, but it's mostly a character driven story. And of course, the best character is Opus, the dog.

As expected, Kevin Pierce delivers an outstanding performance. This is a light, very enjoyable listen with no cliffhangers or loose ends.

Loved it after the first chapter

At first I thought I was reading the writers bio (I guess I kind of was come to find out) then I realized it was the story. I loved the dog and sarge they both kept me entertained. I like how current events were mixed in making it believable. I kind of wish the main characters had a bit more depth. I loved the dog more than the hero lol he showed more feeling. But the story was good and I enjoyed the read. I also enjoyed following the lead through his attempts to prep. It was real and I was glad it wasnt a overkill. Even got me spinning my wheels adding to my camping supplies. I enjoyed this book. Read on!

Boyd Craven continues to amaze me with his talent. One Man's Opus continues to satisfy my desire for fiction that transports me to the realm envisioned by the author. An authors ability to immerse me in their world of creation to the extent that I smell, taste and feel what the characters do makes for a very nice journey. In this woork, you witness a mild mannered introvert spread his wings and grow to an astounding stature. The steps through this journey and the intensity of the action coupled with the richness of the characters makes me place "Highly Recommended" on my review of this book. I am thoroughly enjoying the journy's that Boyd Craven III has provided for me.

This is a great series, stories of ordinary people and their well-trained dogs. Set in a part of Northeast Michigan I spent my high school and junior high years living in, the first volume does a good job of describing the local environment and developing the characters - including Opus, a well-trained German Shepherd with enough personality for the whole book. Rather than a grand adventure, Opus and his human deal with human scaled problems, like winter weather, a building inspector, small-time local troublemakers caught up in a blizzard, and those evil, villainous squirrels.

This is a wonderful, heartfelt story about relationships, both human and canine. Our human hero Rick, who finds his talent in writing and who also, finds the need to become a prepper. Our canine hero Opus, who has a way of making his wants and desires known and watches out for the people he loves. Ricks girlfriend Tina, is a wonderful woman who has overcome her fears with the help of Opus and is just what Rick needed. Great writing and Kevin Pierce makes it that much more enjoyable.

Boyd Craven is a wonderful author and I love his work. If you haven’t given his books a try you should.
I also love it when he picks Kevin Pierce to narrate his books. Can’t think of a more perfect pairing.

Great story!

This story shows that when The SHTF it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the world and that disaster can be local or even personal. Boyd writes of characters I wish I could meet and with whom I would like to be friends. Great characters and a great plot, coupled with excellent writing make this one a must read. I’m looking forward to reading more of Opus’ and his pack’s adventures.

Hmmm

Likeable main character ✔
-who is willing and able to defend ✔
Beautiful female ✔
Smart/highly trained dog (GS to be exact) ✔

Although there were aspects of this book that are all too common within this genre, the story didn't follow the typical SHTF storyline you would expect to find in book 1 of a series. (That was intentionally vague because anything more would spoil it so read the book!)
✴I gotta note that liked him even more because of his money maker.

Good writing and setup, interesting characters but didn't really go anywhere.

I enjoyed this for what it was. The writing was good and I enjoyed the characters in the plot line that was created. However the story never went anywhere it was more of a hey this happened to me last summer type of tail. I'm going to give the second book a try it wasn't that this one was bad it was just flat not a lot of excitement to it.

Rick Carpenter is a paranormal romance author who loves the outdoors and camping. He is a loner by choice until Tina and her German shepherd, Opus, find their way into his life. With all the unrest in the months leading up to the 2016 presidential election Rick feels more now than ever that he needs to establish a bug out location and seriously start prepping. The small town he chooses has its own set of problems that somehow seem to spill over onto Rick.

Craven’s novel, One Man's Opus: A Survival and Preparedness Story, is told from Rick’s point of view. The tale is of one man’s journey into the world of prepping mixed with a romance. It is a sweet story with some tense moments.

The reason I cannot give this a 5-star review is that it is listed as post-apocalyptic and I never read anything that indicated that the SHTF. Sure, rioting and other bad things were happening near where he lived but nothing on an apocalyptic scale. They were all short-lived and faded quickly into the background. I’m not even sure I’d call it a survival story - maybe, a true crime story mixed in to give it a life-threatening appeal.

It is still a good read and I would recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars.

Clean and simple tale of a non hero overcoming the challenges of an unstable social conflict. I enjoy reading about the common man succeeding through his own efforts. Glad the story is not a series, but would certainly like to touch base with the charactes five years down the road to see how the're doing.

Please tell me this is a series!

I’ve read a considerable amount of survival fiction but this author really put together a great book. I could almost feel the main character’s nerdiness at the beginning of the story which made his adventures all the more enjoyable. Surely there will be more tales (or tails) for these characters!

Excellent fast paced read.

As a dog lover, having Opus as a main character makes this book one of a kind. Boyd's writing keeps you from putting it down. Knowing the area he uses for his bugout location makes it seem more real. Thanks for an excellent book , now on to the next.
