It's the night of the Po-town Spill, and things are getting weird. Strange lights fill the sky, the house across the street is melting, and the neighbors are turning into meat puppets. Lexa's big sister and parents are gone, and all she has for company in this calamity is her rag doll, Vespertine. Luckily, since the Spill began Vespertine can talk, and has plenty to say.
Scott Westerfeld is a New York Times bestselling author of YA. He is best known for the Uglies and Leviathan series. His current series, IMPOSTORS, returns to the world of Uglies.
The next book in that series, MIRROR'S EDGE, comes out April 6, 2021.
Wow this was a short little prologue but I devoured it twice to look for all the hidden little details and still was left wanting more. It was fantastic getting to follow along Lexa as opposed to her little sister but just like I felt in the first novel, I’m not sure how I feel and how much I trust that doll vespertine. 4.25/5
This was okay. Could have been better. Art is amazing. Was interesting to see how things happened the night of the spill. Features Lexa and her creepy doll possessed by an alien princess of some sort.
If you wanted to know how what happened in the Spill Zone happened, you will be disappointed, just hints. What you will find is more Lexa and Vespertine, and the answer to that question Addison asks about how the children got out of there on a school bus?
3.5 Stars I actually read Spill Zone before reading this one, but when I discovered this existed, I immediately wanted to know more. It's not an ebook or sold anywhere except on Amazon and there were only 3 copies, so I bought one! I was definitely hoping/expecting some more backstory, and although there was a bit, it was mostly just a teaser for the main book. If you can get your hands on this one though, it's a fun, quick little teaser forward before you delve into the actual book!
This was issue I was very excited about and hoping to pick up today for Free Comic Book Day. I was thrilled when I found out that Scott Westerfeld had released a graphic novel and added it to my TBR right away (Spill Zone). I do still need to buy it, but I'm definitely going to soon. This FCBD issue is a short prequel to that graphic novel, and it gave me a good idea of the premise of the series. It is definitely that unique kind of sci-fi that Westerfeld does (I absolutely love his Uglies and Midnighters series), and I can't wait to find out more about this world that I've only gotten a small glimpse into. The artwork is messy-looking, but while reading, it seems purposeful as it matches the vibe of the plot and just goes along with the whole thing quite well. I love the creepy lettering in this as well. This issue exceeded my expectations and I'm so happy for that, and I can't wait to get my hands on the first volume of the Spill Zone series (though Vol. 2 is not until 2018).
It's been awhile since I read volume 1 so I don't remember exactly what is going on in this series ...but also this is supposed to be the teaser you read before the series so really that shouldn't matter. I think the main problem is that it is only 30 pages and even in a proper graphic novel 30 pages is not a lot of space, but this is a webcomic where each page has like 4 panels at most [manga style layout kind of] so pretty much NOTHING happens. I guess it might pique some people's interest but if I had read this before volume 1 I probably wouldn't have cared at all. Reading it after volume 1 I'm just wondering what the point is and why it it didn't answer literally any of the questions raised about Spill Night before.
Wow. I am definitely going to get hold of the graphic novel of this. This is the sort of thing I was expecting from free comic book day; a taster that just reels you in and leaves you wanting more.
Omg I want more! Literally, the only books I'm in the mood to read right now are comic books, so that's what I'm gonna keep doing forever and ever and ever and ever...
This was given out on Free Comic Book Day, May 6, 2017 and I'm so happy I got a copy of it!
I actually read Spill Zone before reading Spill Night - which is totally fine. This short comic just provides a little info of what happened "before" the incident and then finishes up by having the first few pages of the completed graphic novel. While this isn't necessary to read to enjoy Spill Zone, I would recommend it!
A fun, short read. And by fun I mean creepy. This is creepy in the best possible way! Come on, you can't deny dolls are a little creepy.
I picked up Spill Night during Free Comic Book Day 2017. I didn't hold out much hope for it, as I discovered it at one of the last comic book stores my friend and I hit. By that time, our free comic book selections were limited.
However, having never read Spill Zone, Spill Night is an intriguing look into a world where dolls and toys can talk...and a sinister spill haunts a forgotten city, turning it all kinds of bright colors While it may look pretty, there are dangers everywhere.
If I ever manage to pare down my to read stack of comics, I will definitely be checking out Spill Zone.
Originally picked this up as part of Free Comic book day 2017. It was one of the ones I was most eager to get. The idea just grabbed me. And I can now say, after reading this I was not wrong. Although, the first issue was short it was clear. Both in illustration and narrative. That is interesting for illustration as it could easily get confusing with the neon colours that help show the ghostly contamination caused by the title event. I want to pick up the full story 'Spill Zone' to find out more about this 'verse.
After reading Spill Zone I wanted to read this, but couldn't find it anywhere. I saw a review say something about having it from free comic book day so I dug out my boxes of comics and found it!! This is a super short prequel to Spill Zone that shows what happened with Addison's sister on the night of the spill. It definitely adds to the story, and I love the bright coloring of the artwork. Can't wait to read more!
This was a comic handed out during free comic book day. It depicts the fateful night the spill occurred and it sort of shows how the kids got outta there before shit completely hit the fan.
A very nice little extra piece of information that is slightly alluded to in the main story. Sort of like an Easter egg.
This was published as a free comic for Free Comic Book Day so I didn’t think I could find it, but it’s online at thespillzone.com as a webcomic. It gives a bit of the backstory of Lexa and Vespertine...but not a lot. Still. It’s nice to get all the details about this crazy world. And it’s free which is a bonus.
Giving this is same as the first volume because I read them together. I really liked seeing what was happening that night when the worlds split and started letting these creatures in. It was interesting to see what Vespertine did to help Lexa that night but I just wish there was so much more to this story. I feel like the concept had a lot to work with.
Well done, but 31 pages of a graphic novel is sooooo short. It barely showed anything and def didn't EXPLAIN anything, lol. It was an interesting look, but didn't satisfy me at all.
